A Look At USF UConn and USF met three times before USF joined the Big East Conference, nine times as Big East rivals, and once as members of the American. UConn holds an 11-2 edge, including an 83-40 victory just two weeks ago in Hartford. UConn is 5-2 at USF, but lost its last game at the Sun Dome. The Bulls are 12-15 this season, 3-11 in the AAC, and 7-8 at home. USF will be trying to snap a four-game losing streak. All-conference candidate, senior forward Victor Rudd leads the team in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (6.8). Junior guard Corey Allen is the top assist man (3.0). Center John Egbunu (7.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and soph Zach LeDay (3.1 ppg) join Rudd up front,
with junior Shemiye McLendon completing the starting lineup. Guard Martino Brock (9.3 ppg) and forward Chris Perry (9.3 ppg) are the top reserves. The Bulls struggle to score in league games, averaging just 61.8 ppg, while allowing opponents 74.6 ppg.

closest include Tony Hanson in 1976-77, who led in scoring and rebounding and was third in assists, Caron Butler in 2000-01, who led in scoring and rebounding and was second in assists, and Kemba Walker in 2010-11, who led in scoring and assists and was second in rebounding.
MR. CLUTCH ... AGAIN: Senior Shabazz Napier added another chapter to a career filled withclutch performances with a buzzer-beating 15-foot jumper that lifted UConn over #15/13 Florida, 65-64, before a sellout crowd (10,167) at Gampel Pavilion on Dec. 2. Napier, who had 26 points (5 three-pointers), 4 rebounds, and 3 steals in the game, completed a four-point play that put UConn ahead, 63-62, with 34 seconds left, but Florida took back the lead, 64-63, on a Michael Frazier layup with 0:18 to go. With the clock winding down, Napier took an off-balance shot that missed, but teammate DeAndre Daniels tipped the rebound back to Napier, who caught and shot the ball in one motion, just beating the finalhorn.Danielshad14pointsand 7 rebounds as the Huskies’ record went to 8-0.

Two outstanding young players, Sam Cassell, Jr., and Daniel Hamilton, have signed agreements to attend UConn begin-ning with the 2014-15 academic year. Cassell, a 6-4, 195-pound guard out of Baltimore, is the son of 15-year NBA player Sam Cassell, who is currently an as-sistant coach with the Washington Wizards. The elder Cassell was teammates with UConn head coach Kevin Ollie on the 2002-03 Milwaukee Bucks. Senior Shabazz Napier added to the UConn record book on Nov. 11 when he became the only UConn player to ever record a second triple double in his career, scoring 14 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and handing out 10 assists to lead the Huskies past Yale, 80-62. Napier’s previous triple double came during his sophomore season, on Nov. 20, 2011, when he had 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 as-sists against Coppin State. Napier owns two of the 10 triple doubles in UConn history. He and UCF’s Isaiah Sykes are the only two cur-rent players in the country to have two triple-doubles during their careers. ALL-TIME LISTS: With 15 points against SMU, UConn senior Shabazz Napier has 1,720 career points, enough to occupy the No. 8 spot on UConn’s all-time scoring list. No. 7 on the list is Kemba Walker (2008-11) with 1,783 points. Napier also had 2 assists against SMU, upping his career total to 597 assists, No. 4 in that category. No. 3 on the list is current UConn head coach Kevin Ollie with 619 assists. Taliek Brown is UConn’s all-time assist leader with 722. Napier is the only player in UConn history with 1,700 points and 550 assists. Three other UConn players -- Doron Shaffer, Tate George, and Taliek Brown --- had 1,000 points and 500 assists.

Kevin OLLIEHead Coach
2nd Year as HC; 4th year at UConnIn just his second season as the
head basketball coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut and only his fourth year in the profession since retiring from the NBA, Kevin Ollie has already established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game.
Ollie accepted a huge responsi-bility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.
By the end of the 2012-13 sea-son, however, it was evident that Ollie was more than ready to meet the challenge.
With only two seasons of coach-ing experience after joining Calhoun’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportu-nity to lead the storied UConn pro-gram.
Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, and a team that was ineligible for any postseason play due to academ-ic shortcomings in years long past, Ollie guided the Huskies to a 20-vic-tory season, a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his firstyear. The Huskies finished 20-10, ex-
tending UConn’s streak of 20-win seasonstothreestraight, fiveinthelast six years, and 14 in the last 16 years, as well as extending its streak of winning seasons to 26 in a row. UConn posted a 10-8 mark in the difficultBigEastConference.Atsea-son’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recog-nized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority coach, who produced excellent re-sultsdespitedifficultoradversecon-ditions.
Ollie raised eyebrows with the
season’s very first game, upsetting14th-ranked Michigan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Classic at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also included victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syra-cuse, and five wins in overtime, aschool record.
On Dec. 29, 2012, less than a dozen games into his first season ashead coach, Ol-lie was awarded a new contract that will run through at least the 2017-18 season.
Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he re-
ported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two sea-sons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning fromsomeofthefinestteacherstoever coach the game, including Cal-houn, Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, and George Karl. “After13years in theNBA,Kev-

The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie. “Thisismydreamjob.Iwasmade

ing the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time cap-tain.
He played in 124 games for the Hus-kies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 as-sists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications.
But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, re-spectively.
Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, display-ing unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.
Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing
with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas
Eve,”saidOllie.“WhataChristmaspres-entthatwas.”
Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earn-ing a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moralfiber, impeccablecharacter, andavast knowledge of the game. His perse-verancefinallypaidoffwithamulti-yearcontract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a profes-sional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventu-ally become a coach.
Ollie couldn’t have had a more suc-cessful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national champion-ship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “KevinOllieepitomizeswhatwewant

all about, and when you say that, that’s heavystuff,”Calhounsaid.“Anyfoxholeyou need to jump in, there’s your guy. Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’syourguy.”
Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).

“Kevin Ollie, he was a game-changer for us. He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklaho-ma City ... just his mind set, professionalism, every single day. And we all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Rus-sell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden.
