2016 American Athletic Conference Champions!
American Conference Championship Most Outstanding Player Daniel Hamilton
THIRD TIME THE CHARM: After reaching the American Athletic Conference Championship game for the third consecutive season, UConn finally brought home the trophy with a 72-58 victory over Memphis on Sunday, March 13, at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. The Huskies, seeded #5, took control of the game in the first half, going from a 6-6 tie to a 20-7 lead and maintained the margin with a 32-19 advantage at halftime. Although Memphis sliced the lead to just four twice in the second half, the Huskies withstood the threats and built the lead back. Only once did the margin fall below double digits in the last 10:00. Tourney MOP Daniel Hamilton had his third consecutive double-double for the Huskies with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while grad students Shonn Miller and Sterling Gibbs scored 13 points apiece, Rodney Purvis added 12 points and Omar Calhoun scored 10. Besides Hamilton, UConn’s Miller and Jalen Adams were selected to the AAC All-Tournament Team.
TAKING DOWN NO. 1: UConn fell behind 12-4 to start then went on a 31-7 run to take control of Saturday’s semifinal game against No. 1 seed Temple, the league’s regular-season champ. UConn shot an impressive 55.2 percent in the first half, while holding Temple to 28.1 percent as the Huskies took a 39-28 halftime lead. The Owls cut the lead to six, but UConn withstood the challenge and earned a berth in the AAC title game. Sophomore Daniel
Hamilton and grad Shonn Miller shared the scoring lead with 19 points apiece, and Hamilton grabbed 11 rebounds. Freshman Jalen Adams poured in 11 points and handed
out 8 assists, and junior Amida Brimah contributed 6 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. The win upped UConn’s record in the AAC postseason tournament to 7-2.
QUITE A QUARTERFINAL: UConn and Cincinnati staged the longest game in American Athletic Conference history when they went to four overtimes in Friday’s AAC Championship quarterfinals before UConn finally prevailed, 104-97. The biggest shot of the game came from UConn freshman Jalen Adams, whose 65-footer with 0.8 seconds remaining tied the game, 88-88, and forced a fourth overtime. The Huskies outscored Cincinnati, 16-9, in that fourth extra session to capture the hard-fought victory. The game was tied at the end of regulation time, 62-62, and the end of the first overtime, 67-67, after the second overtime, 75-75, and 88-88 after the third overtime. Five UConn players played more than 40 minutes and sophomore Daniel Hamilton and grad Sterling Gibbs played 55 and 54 minutes, respectively. Hamilton was outstanding with a career-high 32 points, hauling down 12 rebounds, and handing out 8 assists. He was one of six Huskies in double figures --- Adams had 22, Gibbs had 14, Rodney Purvis had 14, Shonn Miller had 10 and Amida Brimah had 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. It is the third consecutive season in which UConn has eliminated Cincinnati from the AAC Championship.

UCONN IN NCAA TOURNAMENT PLAY: UConn is making its 33rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament and owns a record of 59-29 (which includes a 2-1 record in 1996 that has been declared void by the NCAA). The Huskies have won four NCAA National Championships, in 1999, 2004, 2011, and 2014 and also appeared in the 2009 Final Four. UConn has reached the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times and the Sweet Sixteen 17 times in school history. UConn has a perfect 7-0 record in the NCAA Tournament under four-year head coach Kevin Ollie, who guided the Huskies to the 2014 National Championship. In 18 NCAA appearances under Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, UConn posted a 48-15 mark. The Huskies were 4-14 in 13 appearance in the tourney prior to Calhoun’s arrival in Storrs in 1986-87.
IMPRESSIVE DOZEN: UConn has an impressive 39-8 (.830) record in its last 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, plus this season, dating back to its 6-0 run to the National Championship in 1999. Included in that 12-appearance span are four NCAA National Championships (1999, 2004, 2011, 2014), five trips to the Final Four (1999, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014) and seven trips to the Elite Eight (1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014).
EARLY-ROUND SUCCESS: The Connecticut basketball program has posted a superb 32-5 (.865) record in the first two rounds of NCAA tourney competition in UConn’s 18 previous tourney appearances under head coach Jim Calhoun, and two under Kevin Ollie. UConn was 16-2 in NCAA First Round play and 13-3 in NCAA Second Round matchups under Calhoun, and the Huskies are 2-0 in the First Round and 1-0 in the Second Round under Ollie. Since 1990, UConn is 18-2 (.900) in NCAA First Round games.
UCONN AS A NO. 9 SEED: UConn is a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the third time since the seeding process began in 1979. The Huskies hold a 2-2 NCAA record as a No. 9 seed -- defeating Nebraska, 86-65, and losing to Ohio State, 78-55, in the 1992 opening rounds in Cincinnati, bowing to Iowa State, 77-64, in the opening game of the 2012 tour-ney in Louisville, and topping Colorado, 74-67, in this year’s tourney. appearances since 1979, the Huskies have been a No. 1 seed five times, a No. 2 seed six times, a No. 3 seed once, a No. 4 seed once, a No. 5 seed three times, a No. 7 seed once, a No. 9 seed three times, and a No. 11 seed once.
SCOUTING KANSAS: Despite their long basketball histories, UConn and Kansas have met only twice on the court, both resulting in victories for the Jayhawks. On Jan. 28, 1995, the Huskies took a 15-0 record to Kansas City to meet the Jayhawks in Kemper Arena, but Kansas dominated the contest for an 88-59 win. Two seasons later, on Jan. 19, 1997, Kansas returned the game, traveling to Hartford to meet UConn at the Hartford Civic Center, and captured a 73-65 decision. This season, Kansas has been extremely impressive, losing only four games on its way to 31 wins, the No. 1 ranking in both polls and the No. 1 overall seeding in the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks, who have won 15 straight and haven’t lost since Jan. 25 at Iowa State, are the Big 12 regular season and Big 12 tournament champs. The Jayhawks are led in scoring by senior forward Perry Ellis (16.8), who is also the team’s second-leading rebounder (5.8). Also starting up front is junior Landen Lucas (5.5 ppg), who leads the team in rebounding (6.3) and field goal percentage (.624). In the Jayhawks’ solid backcourt are junior Wayne Selden (13.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg), junior Frank Mason (13.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.7 apg), and soph Devonte Graham (11.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg). Kansas averages 82.2 ppg, outscoring opponents by 14.1 points per game, is outrebounding opponents by 4.8, shoots .497 overall and .425 from three-point range.
CHALLENGING NO. 1: Kansas will be the ninth No. 1 seed that UConn has played in the NCAA Tournament (seeding began in 1979). The Huskies have a record of 3-5 in the previous eight games against No. 1 seeds, but has won its last two -- a 79-78 win over Duke in the 2004 National Semifinal in San Antonio, Texas, and a 63-53 win over Florida in the 2014 National Semifinal in Arlington, Texas. The other games against No. 1 seeds include: a 78-55 loss to Ohio State in the 1992 Second Round in Cincinnati; a 102-96 loss to UCLA in the 1995 West Regional finals in Oakland, Calif.; a 75-64 loss to North Carolina in the 1998 East Regional finals in Greensboro, N.C.; a 77-74 win over Duke in the 1999 National Semifinal in St. Petersburg, Fla.; a 90-82 loss to Maryland in the 2002 East Regional finals in Syracuse; and an 82-78 loss to Texas in the 2003 South Regional semifinal in San Antonio. The Jayhawks will also be the eighth No. 1-ranked Top 25 team

the Huskies have played since 1986-87, the start of the Jim Calhoun Era. The Huskies own a 3-4 record in the previous seven games, the most recent being the 2014 National Semifinal win over Florida.
VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: Using the AP Top 25 as the standard, Kansas (#1) will be the fifth ranked team the Huskies have faced in the 2015-16 season. The Huskies are 1-3 so far against ranked opponents, bowing to #10 Gonzaga, 73-70, on Nov. 27 and #6 Maryland, 76-66, on Dec. 8, while defeating #21 SMU, 68-62, on Feb. 18, and losing to #24 SMU, 80-54, on March 3. Since 1989-90, UConn is 129-103 (.556) against ranked opponents and since the first NCAA championship season of 1998-99, the Huskies are 96-68 (.585) against ranked opponents. COACHING IN THE FAST LANE: With UConn’s win over Colorado on Thursday, UConn coach Kevin Ollie became just the eighth coach in NCAA Tournament history to win at least his first seven tournament games. The others include: Branch McCracken, Indiana (1940, 1953 - 7-0); Henry Iba, Oklahoma State (1945-49 - 8-0); Ken Loeffler, La Salle (1954-55 - 9-0); Phil Woolpert, San Francisco (1955-56 -- 11-0); Fred Taylor, Ohio State (1960-61 -- 7-0); Ed Jucker, Cincinnati (1961-63 - 11-0); and Steve Fisher, Michigan (1989-90 - 7-0). As a player, an assistant coach and a head coach, Ollie is 19-4 in the NCAA Tournament. The win over Colorado on Thursday was also the 97th of Ollie’s four-year coaching career, putting him in sole possession of fifth place on UConn’s all-time coaching wins list. Only Jim Calhoun (625), Hugh Greer (287), Dom Perno (139), and Dee Rowe (120) stand in front of Ollie, who is the second-fastest coach in UConn history to reach 90 wins. Greer (1946-63) won 90 games in only 116 games coached. Ollie’s 90th win came in his 130th game at the helm.
UCONN IN IOWA: The Huskies’ trip to Des Moines is the first journey to Iowa for the UConn basketball program. The Huskies have played against Iowa (1-2), Iowa State (1-1) and Drake (0-1), but all six games occurred on neutral courts.
CONFERENCE PLAY: In three seasons in in the American Athletic Conference, UConn has a 32-22 record (.593) in regular-season league play. In 34 seasons in the Big East Conference, the Huskies had a 325-233 record (.582) in regular-season play.
NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: UConn’s 68-62 victory over Georgetown on Jan. 23 completed the Huskies’ 2015-16 regular-season non-conference schedule with a 10-3 record. The Huskies went 8-0 at home in the non-conference schedule. Under Coach Kevin Ollie, UConn has posted a record of 39-11 (.780) in regular-season non-conference games.
NO. 1 FROM THE LINE: UConn’s 22-of-23 performance from the foul line against Colorado (95.7 percent) was the sixth-best performance in NCAA Tournament history and lifted the Huskies’ free throw percentage to 79.3, No. 1 in the country. UConn is also on a school-record pace for best team foul shooting percentage for a season. That record is currently held by the 1980-81 Huskies, who shot 78.2 and led the nation. In its last four games -- three in the American Athletic Conference Championship and one in the NCAA tourney -- the Huskies are shooting 88.4 percent (76 of 86) from the foul line. DEFENSIVE PRESSURE: UConn’s field goal percentage defense of 38.3 percent is ranked among the top five in the country. UConn has held 24 opposing teams to a field goal percentage of under 40.0 percent, including 16 of its last 22 games. To find a UConn team that had a better field goal percentage defense, you would have to go back to the 2008-09 Huskies, who held opponents to 37.7 percent for the season. UConn’s scoring defense of 63.2 points per game is ranked 15th in the nation.
THREE-POINT STREAK: UConn hit six three-pointers in its last
2016 NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPFirst & Second Rounds, Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines, Iowa
uconnhuskies.com / @UConnMBB
game against Colorado, extending its streak of hitting at least one three-pointer to 244 consecutive games, a streak that dates back more than six years. The last game in which the Huskies failed to make a three-pointer occurred on Nov. 27, 2009, during a 68-59 loss to Duke in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden in New York City. UConn was 0-for-4 from three-point range in that game.
BRIMAH’S BACK: UConn junior Amida Brimah returned to game action on Sunday, Jan. 31, at UCF after missing 11 games while recuperating from surgery to repair the middle finger on his right hand, broken during practice on Dec. 21. Brimah currently has a .661 career field goal percentage, the highest in UConn history. Brimah set the single-season school record of .674 last season and is shooting .657 this year. The junior center also had five blocked shots against Colorado, giving him 64 for the season and 277 for his career, enough for sole possession of third place on UConn’s all-time list. Brimah’s season field goal percentage of .657 would rank fifth and his blocked shots per game of 2.67 would rank 12th in the country (as of March 16), if he had enough games to qualify.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Sophomore Daniel Hamilton had 17 points and 10 rebounds against Colorado on Thursday, his fourth consecutive double-double. Hamilton has 12 double-doubles this season and 17 in his career, including a triple-double against CCSU. Junior Kentan Facey had 10 points and 12 rebounds against CCSU, his first double-double of the season and the second of his UConn career. Facey and Hamilton join grad student Shonn Miller as Huskies who have recorded a double-double so far this season. As far as career double-doubles, Miller has 19 (18 during his three years at Cornell), Hamilton has 17, junior Amida Brimah has two, Facey has two and grad student Sterling Gibbs has one (while at Seton Hall).
ANOTHER 25: UConn’s win over Colorado on Thursday was the Huskies’ 25th of the season, clinching the fourth consecutive 20-win season under four-year Coach Kevin Ollie. Overall, it is the sixth straight 20-win season for UConn, and the 17th 20-win season in the last 19 years for the Huskies. It is the 13th 25-win season for UConn overall and the second under Ollie.
AAC HONORS: UConn sophomore Daniel Hamilton was named to the All-American Athletic Conference second team and grad student Shonn Miller was named All-Conference Honorable Mention in a vote of the league’s head coaches for postseason awards. During the regular season, several Huskies were honored with weekly awards:
AAC Player of the Week:Daniel Hamilton (2): Dec. 28, Feb. 8Rodney Purvis (1): Jan. 4
AAC Rookie of the Week:Jalen Adams (1): Feb. 8AAC Weekly Honor Roll:Sterling Gibbs (3): Jan. 11, Jan. 18, March 7Rodney Purvis (2): Nov. 23, Dec. 21Daniel Hamilton (1): Nov. 30Amida Brimah (1): Nov. 16Shonn Miller (1): Jan. 25
CHARGE ACCOUNT: Grad student Shonn Miller has taken over as the Huskies team leader in drawing offensive fouls. Although the new rules make it more difficult to draw a charge, Miller has drawn 26 this season in 35 games. As for the rest of the Huskies, Amida Brimah and Phil Nolan have each drawn five charges, Omar Calhoun has drawn three, Sam Cassell Jr. and Sterling Gibbs have each drawn two, while Jalen Adams and Steve Enoch have drawn one each for a team total of 45.

UCONN INKS ONE OF TOP RECRUITING CLASSES
UConn men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie has announced that the program has received signed National Letters of Intent from four student-athletes who will enroll as fulltime students in the fall of 2016. Guard Alterique Gilbert (Litho-nia, Ga.), power forwards Mamadou Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) and Juwan Durham (Tampa, Fla.) and small for-ward Vance Jackson (Altadena, Calif.) make up what is considered by most recruiting services as one of the top re-cruiting classes in the country. It is the first time UConn has had a recruiting class including four players ranked in the Top 100 since the incoming fresh-man class of 2006-07. Gilbert, a 5-11 point guard out of Miller Grover High School, is rated among the top 30 players nationally by most recruiting services. An exception-al athlete known for his tremendous speed, quickness, and strength, he averaged 18.5 points, 6.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.3 steals as a junior. He was recently nominated to partici-pate in the McDonald’s All-American Game as well as the prestigious Jordan Brand Classic. Jackson, a 6-8 forward with a deadly longrange shot, was named the 2015 Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year after averaging 19.4 points and 7.1 rebounds for St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.). As a sophomore, he was teammates with current UConn sophomore Daniel Hamilton on a Bosco team that won the state championship. Jackson, a top 50 player, will play his senior season at Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif). Diarra, a 6-8 power forward who
attends Putnam Science Academy (Putnam, Conn.) is explosive around the rim and is an outstanding rebounder at both ends of the court. He averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds last year to help Putnam Science to a 27-8 record. Durham, a 6-9 power forward out of Tampa Preparatory School, was rated among the top 30 players in the country, despite having missed the last few weeks of his junior season with a knee injury. Un-til he was injured in February last year, he was averaging 22.9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game.
Kevin OLLIEHead Coach
4th year as HC; 6th year at UConnIn just three seasons as UConn’s
head coach, following two years as an assistsnt under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun, UConn head coach Kevin Ollie has already experienced a long career’s worth of ups and downs --- including the ultimate high of the college basketball coaching profes-sion, the 2014 NCAA National Cham-pionship.
His teams have never won less than 20 games, while posting two perfect APR scores of 1,000. His career re-cord of 72-33 (.686) already has him tied for sixth place on UConn’s all-time coaching wins list.
The 2014-15 season was full of ups and downs as well, culmination in a 20-15 record and a bid to the national Invi-tation Tourna-ment. Along the way, the Hus-kies had wins over top AAC teams SMU, Tul-sa and Cincin-nati and a thrill ride through the AAC postseason tournament that ended in the cham-pionship game, where they bowed to SMU.
At 43, Ollie is considered one of the bright, rising stars in the college basketball coaching world.
It took Ollie just 70 games to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA champion-ship.
In just his second season as UCo-nn’s head basketball coach and only his fourth year in coaching since retir-ing from the NBA, Ollie firmly estab-lished himself in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in 2013-14 and the NCAA title, defeat-ing Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney’s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
On his way to guiding UConn to their its fourth NCAA crown in the history of the program, Ollie marched the Huskies past storied pro-grams Saint Jo-seph’s, Villano-va, Iowa State, Michigan State, and Florida in the tournament before the finale against Ken-tucky.
It would have been a dream season for any col-lege coach, but for a coach of just 70 games, whose team was not even able to compete in the 2013 NCAA Tournament be-cause of aca-demic short-
comings of years long past, it was truly remarkable. The Huskies, who had a 12-6 mark in the new Ameri-can Athletic Conference, won eight of their last nine games, 11 of their last 13, and had a 10-4 record against ranked opponents, including two wins against Florida, the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

bility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the his-tory of UConn men’s basketball.
Despite a roster depleted by trans-fers and early NBA entrants, Ollie sur-prised the experts by guiding the Hus-kies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no other UConn coach had ever ac-complished in his first year.
At season’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recognized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe Na-tional Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority coach.
Less than a dozen games into his first season as head coach, Ollie was award-ed a five-year contract. Following his second season in 2013-14, he spurned interest from NBA teams to sign anoth-er new contract with UConn that runs through May, 2019.
Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful sea-sons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned
to join Calhoun’s coaching staff follow-ing a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two seasons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possessed a wealth of basket-ball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Calhoun, Chuck Daly, Don Nelson, Larry Brown, and George Karl.
Coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, Ollie played on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, as a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.
He played in 124 games for the Hus-kies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 as-sists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks fourth on UCo-nn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications.
During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s
record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.
After his UConn career, Ollie fought his way through years in the Continen-tal Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.
Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts.
Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year NBA contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities.
Ollie couldn’t have had a more suc-cessful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national champion-ship. He has had the same kind of suc-cess mentoring guards Jeremy Lamb, Shabazz Napier, and, this past season, Ryan Boatright.
Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury and has two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
