Government refers to a group of people that governs a community or unit. It sets and administers public policy and exercises executive, political and sovereign power through customs, institutions, and laws within a state.

A government can be classified into many forms--democracy, republic, monarchy, aristocracy, polity dictatorship and oligarchy are just a few. Some of them are discussed and differentiated below:

The term "aristocracy" is derived from the Greek “aristokratia”, “aristos” means excellent and “kratos” means “state”.

It is the rule by the highest class in certain societies, typically

comprising people of noble birth holding hereditary titles and offices.

The term derives from two Greek words: oligos meaning “few” and arch for “rule”

A government in which a few people such as a dominant clan or clique have power.

An aristocracy and an oligarchy have very similar features, yet their origins are different. In an aristocracy, the nobles are born into their position by royalty. In an oligarchy, the nobles r men of high position are there not because of birth rights but because of their financial position.

The term is derived from Greek word “politeia” meaning “the state”.

A polity is a group with an organized governance.A polity is normally a politically organized population or can be a religious one.

It is generally understood to mean a geographic area with a corresponding government.

"Democracy" comes from the Greek words "demos kratos" ("people power") and means "the rule of the people".

In a democracy, the government is elected by the people. Everyone who is eligible to vote has a chance to have their say over who runs the country.

A polity is a government of the masses which has authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of direct expression whereas democracy has its authority derived through an election by the people.
