Tembies sê hy hoop iemand salvir hom ’n selfoon skenk sodat hy di-rekmet die polisie in kontak kanwees.“En as iemand vir my vullissakke

Digital world is opened to the blindMICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
Although completely blind, Kyle Willi-ams (23) says he can become a heartsurgeon.
Kyle is a junior project coordinator for Ed-it Microsystems, the company that provideseBraille technology. He works at the Athlo-ne School for the Blind in Bellville.Kyle says he tries to “paint a picture” for
sighted people to show how the BraillenoteApex machine has changed his life.Kyle, from Retreat, had an accident as a
six-year-old – “I fell off my auntie’s exercisebike” – and lost his sight completely due toa growing tumour when he was 13. “It wasinstantaneous: One moment I could see, thenext I was completely blind.”But with the eBraille technology, he says
he and others like him are able to “see” intothe exact same digital world as the sighted.“The project was started three years ago.
It has revolutionised education for the blindand vision impaired,” says Kyle.Through the technology, the blind are able
to access all textbooks. “We are no longer re-active in the classroom environment, butproactive. A teacher can easily cut informa-tion out and enlarge it for low vision stu-dents to use.
“For us blind students, it needs to beretyped into Braille and there is a lotof editing that goes intoBrailling infor-mation,” he says. “Teachers now nolonger need to Braille anything. Wecan go search and immediately read itin Braille. Information is instantlyavailable at our fingertips thanks totheBraillenoteApex technology,”Kyleexplains. The technology is fully operational
at the Athlone School for the Blind andPioneerSchool for theBlind inWorces-ter, and is used nationally. For the first time in history, learners
were able to write their exams on theBraillenote Apex, print out their an-swers in sighted text, and have theirpapers marked by a sighted markerwho would never have known it hadbeen written in Braille.“It was very successful and it’s being
done for a second time this year, but the fo-cus is not just on the matrics. Even theGrade 7s are writing their exams like this.”One blind leaner is now attending a main-
stream school.“With the programme there is a whole
new world open for us blind people. We areno longer limited to being teachers or work-ing on a switchboard,” he says.
He’s since written a training manual onthe programme. “The world is not going toadapt to us. We need to adapt to the world.I’m now quite comfortable in this world.”Pieter Labuschagne is the managing di-
rector of Edit Microsystems.“It was traditionally a big problem getting
learners to access proper Braille books. Youhad your traditional paper version, with the
printed Braille conversion.“The Athlone school just took the
opportunity and ran with it, movingpaper to digital,” he says.He said they’veworkedhard to form
good relationships with publishers.Edit Microsystems was awarded
the Braille Partner of the Year in De-cember 2014 in London thanks to theirtechnology. “Now blind children haveaccess to the internet. This is our big-gest success story.”The project was officially launched
inFebruary 2013 by the specialised ed-ucation support directorate of theWCED, who supplied the equipmentto Athlone and Pioneer schools.Tessa Trafford from Edit Microsys-
tems says part of their mandate is toencourage big businesses to partnerwith them to ensure learners have ac-cess to education and opportunities
through this technology.“With access to this equipment, learners
will have the opportunity to reach theirmaximum potential and find employmentonce they leave formal education. “Current-ly only 3% of those who are blind are em-ployed in South Africa. Through initiativessuch as the eBraille project we believe thatthese figures will change.”

Voordit het hy binne ’n halfuur ’n motor gesteelen by ’n apteek ingebreek.
Volgens ao. Wayne Theunis, polisiewoord-voerder, het ao. Marius Swartz en konst.Marco Solomons verlede Oktober ’n wit UnoFiat, wat by ’n huisbraak in Monte Vista-ry-laan opgemerk is, agterna gesit.

Data released by Crime Stats SA last weekshow some northern suburbs are the mostaffected by crime in the country in their res-pective, often “bloody” categories.
These include Kraaifontein, Table View,Bishop Lavis and Delft, among the varietylisted on the online database run by Meer-kat Data Management.
Data released by Crime Stats SA is basedon official information from the police.
The following is based on raw data andnot in proportion to percentage of the popu-lation. The data covered refers to the statis-tics for 2014 (covering April 2013 to March2014): Delft ranks seventh in the WesternCape in the murder category (144), with Ny-angathe forerunner with the highest total(305).
Kraaifontein ranks seventh for reported
house break-ins over the year at 1 247, withTable View following closely with 1 235.
Where drug-related crimes are concer-ned, Delft ranked fourth (2 954), Bishop La-vis fifth (2 578) and Kraaifontein seventh (2516). Mitchells Plain was first with 6 044 ca-ses opened.
Africacheck.org states that due to the ti-me between reporting the data and the fi-nancial year covered, the crime data mightoutdated by as much as six months.
Africacheck states a lot of crimes go unre-ported, police data is unaudited, and thereis widespread mistrust of the police, raisingconcerns over the legitimacy of the figures.V A full, comprehensive list containing the data canbe found at http://businesstech.co.za/news/general/93294/theworstcrimehotspotsinsouthafrica/#disqus_thread

Waarom nie registreer as ’n vrywilli-ger of ’n veiligheids- of pleegouer virBadisa as ’n projek vir Madiba-dag
nie?
’n Veiligheidsouer is ’n persoonwat ty-

A Parow paper recycling busi-ness’s 67 minutes for MandelaDay honoured trolley pusherswho collect and sell waste pa-per.Staff at Mpact Recycling pro-
vided a tour of their industryand a free lunch to ‘trolley-pre-neurs’, as they refer to thesefreelance recycling agents, on 18July.“Trolley-preneurs are per-
haps the best recyclers in SouthAfrica and the cleanliness inour communities is as depend-ent on them as the municipalservice that collects our wasteevery week,” says Donna-MariNoble of Mpact Recycling inParow.“We pass them everyday out-
side our homes and office parks, most of the timewithout a greet-ing or a second glance. They gothrough our bins and are oftenseen dragging trolleys piledhigh with waste paper. Butthese waste traders are an im-portant aggregator of waste forthe recycling industry and formpart of our value chain as theydeliver paper to places like thebuy-back centres on a regularbasis,” Noble says.In the spirit of Mandela Day
and to thank waste traders fortheir continued support, MpactRecycling hosts soup kitchensat different outlets throughoutSouthAfrica every year to show
support for trolley-preneurswho brave the winter cold.“We do this because Mandela
Day is a global call to action forpeople to recognise their abilityto have a positive effect on oth-ers around them. The day hopesto inspire people to embrace thevalues that Mandela shared. These values include democra-cy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation, and respect,”Noble says. She added that anybody can
become part of a positive andsustainable solution to thenega-tive impact waste has on the en-vironment.“Start by making a conscious
effort to have separate contain-ers for glass and plastics in yourkitchen or garage and put allyour sorted paper into your lo-cal green Ronnie bag for theweekly kerbside collections. Ifkerbside collections do not hap-pen in your area, make sure todrop off your paper and card-board at your nearest RonnieBank located convenientlycountrywide.”Ronnie Banks are located at
schools, churches, old-agehomes and community centresand are used as a fund-raisingtool for the community.“For every one ton of paper re-
cycled, three cubic metres oflandfill are saved and approxi-mately 12 jobs created.”

On the coldest, wettest mor-ning the past week I noticedwhat I thought was a drunkold man in our warm waitingroom. He sat there, soakingwet, swinging from side toside, his head on his chest. Iwas annoyed and called two ofour workers to escort him outas he obviously was not aclient of ours. They gently tookhim by the arms, stepping overthe pool of urine by his feet. What happened next humbledme. These workers, earning avery small salary and beingquite poor themselves, literallytook the clothes off their ownback to replace his soakedclothing. I felt ashamed. Hewas given warm coffee and ablanket. In the end, he wastaken to the police station, ashe did not know how he got tous. In hindsight, he might havebeen ill and not drunk at all. What a humbling experience. Idrop my head in shame, buthave learnt yet another lifelesson.

Cluster housing appears to beone solution to living lessexpensively and safely intrying times. Unfortunatelyhome owners’ associations arepart of the deal. From experi-ence I have come to realisethat petty decisions made bytrustees can make life verymiserable for home owners. Many of these frustratedladies and/or gentlemen appearto derive pleasure from finding(and consequently fining theculprit) a dirt bin outside thefence after a day, cutting offthe branches of a yellow woodtree (which might be soarrogant as to be growing itsown way) and breaking upcement paving built to park a

My tale of woe comes afterdriving home on PlattekloofRoad towards Panorama hospi-tal. Late at night, after nightshift, approximately 500m beforethe hospital I heard a thudunder my car but saw nothingin the road. That was about three monthsago. Last month while drivinghome I heard the loudest bangever. I did not know what itwas and kept on driving forabout 300m before stopping andgetting out to looked around myOpel bakkie and found a hugedent in the left door. Feeling abit nervous, I carried on home. The next day driving past I sawhalf a brick in the gutter of theroad that matched what hadgashed my door.I’ve been too busy to report itto the cops, but during thefollowing weeks the pile ofrocks and glass grew next to thesame spot where I was hit so Iimagine it is the same modusoperandi of either naughty kidsor attempted hijacking shouldyou stop to see what hashappened to your car. So bewarned.

Local filmmakers are thrilled with adouble win at two international filmaward ceremonies.
Local feature feature film Born to Winscooped the Golden Crown Award for BestEvangelistic Feature Film at the Internatio-nal Christian Visual Media Conference(ICVM 2015) in Orlando, USAon 27 June, only three weeksafter winning the AdamAward for Best Feature Filmat the Sabaoth InternationalFilm Festival in Milan, Italy. It also won the Bronze CrownAward for Best Feature Dra-ma.
Frans Cronjé from Bracken-fell, who also produced the hitmovieFaithLikePotatoes, andCobus van den Berg fromEversdal, producer of theequally successful Klein Ka-roo, teamed up to produce thisBorn to Win which was relea-sed in August last year.
The film was written and di-rected by Cronjé, produced byVan den Berg and wholly filmed in George.Born to Win is based on the true story of
Leon Terblanche and poses the question,“Where is God?”
“TheCrownAwards are the biggest annu-al film awards in the international Christi-an film industry and has been in existencefor 60 years, while the Sabaoth Festival isa bi-annual film festival where some of thebest internationalChristian films are scree-ned,” says Cronjé.
Cronje was in Milan and in Orlando to re-ceive the awards and said: “We produce ourfilms to have maximum personal impact
and not with the goal to win awards, butsuch a huge effort and large financial in-vestment goes into every film that it is greatto receive recognition for the work we do.”
Cronjé the Golden Crown Award in parti-cular helped to market the movie globally.
“We are waiting on the final paperwork, but since the announcement of the CrownAwards a second majorHollywood distribu-tor has expressed interest in theatrical rele-
ase of the movie. I think thequality and impact of Born toWin, combined with the suc-cess we still have withFaith li-ke Potatoes created this inte-rest,” he said.Faith like Potatoes, released
in 2006, is the true story of An-gus Buchan and has been seenby over 300 million people in17 languages, and over threemillion DVDs have been sold.
“Making a film takes a mas-sive team effort and I amproud of the team we had onBorn to Win, starting with Le-on and Elmarie Terblanchewho allowed us to tell theirstory, Cobus van den Berg asproducer and two of our key
executive producers, Billy and Tanja Ro-bertson. Our lead actor Greg Kriek playedin his first lead role and showed such matu-rity and brilliance that he has been reallybusy on other films since we filmed Born toWin in December 2013.”
Kriek said it has been incredible to seeBorn to Win gain momentum even after it’stheatrical release.
“It’s proof that a true inspirational movieof substance remains timeless.Born to Win, which is available on DVD
will again be on the big screen in Augustand October through CrossKine.

The launch of Why did you take so longcomes shortly after Samantha and CallaHenn’s return from Johannesburg to attendthe SAMRO Wawela Music Awards wherethey were nominated alongside Blackbyrdand Mccully Workshop in the best South Af-rican duo/group category. Not bad for a group who have only been
producing original music since last year.Calla is one of four children and grew up
in a musical family. He performed with vari-ous original bands beforemeeting Samaboutfour years ago.Sam’s love affair with music started when
she took piano lessons in high school, but lifegot in thewayand she grewupand foundher-self with a day job.She was 23 when shemet Calla and the two
used to sing together at braais until he con-vinced her to join him on stage. She says theidea of being on stage with “all those people”looking at her was scary, but soon she wasworking through the day and singing atnight, until one day, she decided to focus onmusic.“I left my job and I haven’t been back
since.” That was three year ago, when Samand Call were known as Public Holiday.Within their first year together they won

@nickymccain
As the winter brings an increased num-ber of whales to our waters, chancesof the giants being entangled in ropes,
nets and lobster traps increase.Such cases are rising, says South African
WhaleDisentanglementNetwork (SAWDN)head Mike Meyers.
About 15 to 17 cases of whale entangle-ment are reported annually. However, there have been eight cases already thisyear and whale season has only begun.
Ten years ago the department of environ-mental affairs to approach the lobster in-dustry to fund training from an Americanwhale disentanglement specialist.
The department invited a range of role-players and SAWDN was born, with basictraining and a set of equipment taught ona mechanical whale tail.
The network now includes the DolphinProtection Action Group, National Sea Res-cue Institute (NSRI), Natal Sharks Board, researchers and whale watchers, Meyerssays. This has created 17 centres along the
South African coastline. The public should report any sighting of
an entangled whale immediately, says Mey-er. There have been reports of people beingkilled by whales in the past, he explains, which is why the general public should nev-er attempt to free a whale themselves.
The network has a 100% success rate indisentangling whales trapped on the seabottom. However, whales entangled butable to break free are difficult to follow, andan entangled whale can face a very slowdeath.
Safety is very important and the volun-teers never enter thewater,Meyer says.On-ly the best equipment is used and all volun-teers are trained.
“It’s a very scary thing the first time youassist a whale. Many volunteers go out withtheir heart in their throats,” he says.
But this is all worth it, as freeing a whaleis a very emotional experience.V Report entangled whales to the Dolphin ActionProtection Group on 021 782 5845 or to the NSRIon 021 434 4011.V For more information or to get involved, contactMike Meyer on 082 578 7617.

Allan Boesak temaak.Ditwordop 11Augustus by ’nNGSen-dingkerk in Bellville-Suid onthul.
Dis in jou brein datdie dinge gebeur.

Tans is daarongeveer 60 spelers indiehele
dag tehouenonsnooi almal omtekomspeel.
Daaris nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok,
