Grant was accompanied by role- players such as Edgar Williams (acting principal), Alex Petrus (Granbuild) and Melvyn Caroline (district director for Metro East Ed- ucation district). The R40 million school, which would be able to facilitate 600 pu- pils, is located in Oregan Way, Northpine. The projected cost is higher than most high schools, given its focus on technical subjects such as me- chanical, electrical and civil engi- neering. TygerBurger reported in the arti- cle, “New doors of opportunity” (TygerBurger 26 October) that the steering committee had to negotiate with three MECs over the years to get the project approved, which was first conceptualised in 2004. Grant remembers his first meet- ing with the Old Paarl Road Techni- cal High School steering committee in 2009 well. “It was explained to me that the nearest technical high school was Bellville Tech, which according to the committee was too far to travel for those learners who wish to pur- sue a technical study field,” he elab- orates. Building commenced in 2010 after the Western Cape Education De- partment (WCED) finally approved the project. It is now just a matter of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s before the school is completed on 30 Novem- ber. It is envisaged that the school will be fully operational at the start of the new school year, which starts on 9 January, 2012. Says Grant: “The WCED is cur- rently ensuring that all the neces- sary logistical requirements, such as school furniture, equipment and learner support materials are being ordered for delivery before the start of the school year.” Once this school and the one in Delft have been completed, there will be five technical high schools in the province, each specialising in subjects such as mechanical tech- nology, electrical technology, civil technology, engineering, graphics and design. The school will be one of 11 new schools to open in 2012. Ten of the 11 schools form part of the WCED’s infrastructure plan, which includes building 25 schools and 20 replacement schools in the current Medium Term Expenditure Framework. Grant concludes: “I am very ex- cited about what the department has achieved in these last two years. I am confident that the schools’ now empty classrooms will be transformed into hubs of teach- ing and learning, where learners and educators are safe and secure, and where quality learning is tak- ing place.” Applications for enrolment in Grades 8 and 9 opened in October this year.
Swaartekrag is inderdaad iets omte oorkom.
“Design...centre of gravity...centreof pressure...aerodynamic for-ces...carbon fibre...onboard electro-nics...V2 rocket...”

Amerika;. Halongbaai in Viëtnam;. Die Iguaza-waterval in Argenti-
nië;. Jeju-eiland in Suid-Korea;.

Alarms, brandkluise, diefwering, selfsverdikte glas, sal jou besittings beter beskerm.”

Volgens kaptein Gerhard Niemand was

Siek bruid trou in hospitaalJANA BEKKER

Tollfreetransportline open
CERRIN HENDRICKS
The City of Cape Town did not indicate anyconcrete plans to update the northern sub-urbs bus routes.
“The City continually receives requests toprovide, move or remove bus stops reflect-ing the change in demand for public trans-port. These are investigated before beingconsidered for implementation,” Brett Her-ron, mayoral committee member for trans-port, roads and stormwater, said.
According to Herron, more and more peo-ple are choosing to use public transport dueto the escalation in the fuel price, time spentin traffic and the environmental impact ofcarbon dioxide emissions and its associatednegative impact on the quality of life.
In a previous article (“An apparently out-dated set of bus routes” – TygerBurgerKraaifontein, 2 November), several ques-tions were posed to the City, regarding theupdating of apparently outdated bus routesin the northern suburbs. This included aquestion regarding the legality of busesstopping outside of the usual bus stops alongwith the previously mentioned question re-garding the updating of the stops.
“Golden Arrow operates on more than1 000 routes daily, each with an approvedroute plan. Some of these routes cover pub-lic roads in residential areasbothasa collec-tion and destination point,” said Herron.
He added that the City of Cape Town ac-tively promotes public transport and has es-tablished a 24-hour Transport InformationCentre (TIC)which canbe contacted toll freeon 0800 656 463.
Residents can obtain information on allpublic transport services and log com-plaints.

Lions lend children’s home a handDESIREÉ RORKE
After a devastating burglary, theBrackenfell Lions are helping achildren’s home in Kraaifonteinto get back on their feet. Withthis, they are also involved withseveral other projects in the ar-ea.
“Approximately two months agowe were notified that the BrightStar Children’s Home in Kraaifon-tein lost most of their belongings ina house break-in,” says TersiaCook, secretary of the BrackenfellLions.
Last week, Cook and Lions presi-dentHelenaWainevisited thehomein order to draw up a wishlist.
The home consists of three bed-rooms, one bathroom and housesfour adults and 14 children rangingbetween the ages of 11 months to 13.
The majority of these childrenwere abandoned by tik addictedmothers shortly after birth, and the
main aim for caregiver BrendaJooste is to create a safe haven forthese children to enjoy their child-hood.
“We don’t have a vehicle to trans-port our children in and we have to
walk with them on rainy days or re-ly on trains and friends in emergen-cies,” says Jooste.
Apart from that they want to con-vert the open stoep into a playroomand need a wendy house for a cloth-
ing and wash room. The home is also in urgent need
of baby products, nappies, second-hand clothing, a television and foodproducts.
“We are also actively involved inLofdal Home for abandoned babies.Currently there are five abandonedbabies looked after by very lovingfoster parents. These people, how-ever, need assistance from the pub-lic to enable them to continue withtheir fruitful work,” says Cook.
“I also recently visited a family oftwo in Brackenfell. The wife isblind and bedridden and both hus-band and wife lives on a disabilitygrant. They are currently renting aroom at the back of a house andtheir grant hardly covers the rent, let alone food.”
Cook says that this couple is indire need of non-perishable food, aswell as possibly a fridge and two-plate stove.
On 10 December, the club is plan-ning on having a Christmas party
at their community centre for bothBright Star Children’s Home, aswell as Lofdal Home, and is callingon the public to assist by donatingtoys and eats to entertain approxi-mately 32 children and 10 adults.
“Our wish is to give these kids aday to remember,” she says.

One gunshot wound to the stomachhas changed a life forever.
Liebea Jefferys (53) was shot in 2008while she was on duty at Gold Circle’sKraaifontein branch and she has still notreceived her Workmen’s CompensationFund (WCF) money.
According to Jefferys, she now suffersfrom severe mental and physical reper-cussions.
“The doctors had to make my stomach, large and small intestines smaller,” shesays while explaining a medical condi-tion known as short bowel syndrome.
Those who suffer from this conditionhave to cope with continuous diarrhoea.
“I can’t eat or drink before I go out, be-cause I must always be near a toilet,” sheelaborates.
The physical after-effects can be treat-ed, but it is Jefferys’ mental state whichmakes her life especially difficult.
“I suffer from post traumatic stress dis-order. I am petrified of African people. Icannot even go to the shops without get-ting a panic attack!” she cries despond-ently.
Jefferys remembers every aspect ofthat fateful day in 2008 when a gun-wield-ing man barged into the licensed bettingoperator’s Kraaifontein branch and “ac-cidentally” shot her.
“I had this funny feeling on my stom-ach when I sent out the tea girl to buysome milk. Then my stomach did a som-ersault when she came back andscreamed ‘38’! What is 38? I saw two menpass a gun around and I knew therewould be trouble,” she continues.
One of the men barged into the office
and pointed a gun right at Jefferys’ head. She apparently told him to take what-
ever he wanted, as long as he doesn’t hurtanyone.
He lowered the gun, and then thebriefest moment of relief was interruptedby an echoing gunshot and a “burningsensation” in her stomach.
“The men got such a skrik that they ranaway with nothing,” says Jefferys.
She was first rushed to Tygerberg Hos-pital and then later that evening she wastaken to Durbanville for surgery.
She did not have medical aid.“I am now a changed person. Before I
was bubbly and outgoing, but now I amalways scared.”
She says she has gone to numerous psy-chologists since then, but it would ulti-mately cost her R10 000 and one more vis-it to a clinical psychologist to get herWCF.
Her pro-bono lawyer who wishes to re-main anonymous told TygerBurger thatin order for his client to get WCF, she hasto get a report from a “good” psychologistwho wouldn’t mind to testify if it comesto that.
“It is a straight forward case. I am sureshe will be successful in her claim if shegets the report which confirms that shesuffers from post-traumatic stress disor-der,” says the lawyer.
Jefferys, however, does not have the fi-nancial means, as she pleads tearfully,“Why should I pay the price? Everyonewe come up against – it’s like running in-to a brick wall. I want answers!”
According to Jefferys, Gold Circle stillowes her 377 hours of leave, whichequates to about R8 000, but Gold Circle’sgeneral manager, Mike Greeff, emphati-cally denies this.

Johannes 10:9
Parents shouldinstil moralsThe moral deterioration of the country, which can be seen at all levels of society, has become such an issue that some localschools have decided to employ an outsidecompany to teach their learners values.
Surely it’s the job of the parents to instilthem in their children? Or has everyonebecome so caught up in the rat race thatthere’s not even time for something thatimportant?
What’s the use of having children if par-ents don’t have time for them? What lega-cy would you leave behind if your childrengrow up without these all-important val-ues?
The company, called Character Trans-formation, teaches pupils six values, which, according to the company, “tran-scend divisions of race, creed, politics, gender and wealth”. The values are: trust-worthiness, respect, responsibility, fair-ness, caring and citizenship.
While teaching children these values isof utmost importance, it is indeed sad thatparents have passed the buck and shiftedtheir responsibility to the teachers.
Bottom line is parents need to take re-sponsibility for their children. Whatyoung people need more than the latestiPhone or gadget, is consistent adult in-volvement.
It’s time parents start taking their jobs(their most important one) seriously.

SLICE OF LIFESLICE OF LIFE
I have been following the articles in Tyger-Burger for a couple of weeks regarding thebuses and bus routes and each week I fumea little bit more, as I sent an email to GoldenArrow requesting that a bus route run fromDurbanville to Eversdal and surrounding ar-eas, as there is only a bus that runs from Bel-lville to Eversdal and surrounding areas.
Well , it is with great interest that I am stillwaiting for a response regarding my requestand agree with the letters “Wool over your
eyes” and “So where is the officialbus stop then?”, TygerBurger 9 No-vember.
Maybe my request will share some lightwhen the new and revised routes are eventu-ally considered and a bus route will then op-erate from Durbanville to Eversdal and sur-rounding areas?
Todate, myemail hasbeenpassed frompil-lar to post and everyone passes the buck, asthey do not want to take matters in hand anddo something about the situation.

Waar is jou ma-niere, meneer?

Sannie voel weer 50 ná tydrenMARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN
“Oeee, man!
Sy sê sy was niks bang nie. “Ek
het eintliknet gesit envir diemensegewaai. Neels was moontlik meergestres as ek. Hy wou net klaar-maak.
Nieeens my nek kon beweeg nie.”
Mooi, man!’ Dit het my hartbaie goed gedoen.”
Par-ty dae was my vin-gers en handeseer.
Sedertdienhet my ma ’n fobie oor Killarney. Ekglo ek moes my ma Killarney toe vatsodat sy haar vrees kan oorkom,”vertel Neels.
Tannie Sannie sê ja, sy het altyd’n hang-up oor Killarney gehad.
“Ek was altyd bekommerd as Neelsdaar ry.

Skelmbosch maak reg vir ’n be-
sige Desembermaand.

Jarrydhet in net twee boulbeurte 4/6 ingeoes.
