“It feels as if our very existence and needsare continuously being ignored by theCity,”he told TygerBurger at the above meeting, where he added that this was unheard of inthe 21st Century. Some of the buildings in the report are
classified as having “reasonable or minimalaccommodation” for persons with disabili-ties, while others indicate “no accommoda-tion” for the disabled. The Northpine Clinic, for instance, has no
parking for the disabled and the incline to
the entrance of the building is too steep forwheelchair or crutch support users. At the Brackenfell civic centre, the access
to the building is acceptable, but the toiletfacilities are lacking and the stage is not ac-cessible for the disabled at all.In a subsequent interview,Twigg toldTyg-
erBurger he did not know why or how itcame to be that none of these buildings wereplanned or built to be accessible to the disa-bled.“I can only ask myself what the previous
governments did in this respect,” he said. Some of the building were built many dec-
ades ago, while others were built more re-cently.The above report didnot indicate any com-
mitmentdates onactions tobe takenwhatso-ever and Twigg likewise could not providean answer regarding timelines, save to saythat the issue is being treated as priority inthe City’s five-year Integrated DevelopmentPlan, which is currently running from 2012to 2017.

nuwe plaaslike forum.

Likewise, theytoo have the right to live with independen-ce, dignity, respect and security as valuedmembers of society.”“This cycle club has adopted us as their

and stop at various towns to create DownSyndrome awareness. We visit schools, churches and corporateswhoall participateand support this annual event,” she says.DSAWC was formed in 1976 and offers a
variety of services and support to peoplewith DS and other intellectual disabilities, and their families.“Our services and programmes are aimed
at improving the quality of life for peoplewith DS, helping them find their purposeand take their rightful place in society,”says Rossouw. This they do by spreading information,
hosting training courses and establishingsupport groups. “We encourage a more in-clusive environment in the education andemployment arenas and our ongoing missi-on is to see that the rights of adults and chil-dren with disabilities are recognised andhonoured in all spheres of life,” she says.Harold Wentzel, who has been riding in
this tour since its inception, says the impactthey make as far as awareness is concernedis worth all the “pain”.
Day one and twowere especially hard thisyear, he says.“First we had to contend with a powerful
South-Easterly wind followed by hours ofrainonday two,”he says, adding thathe suf-fered a nasty fall himself. “After that howe-ver it was plain sailing in cool weather.”“The reception by the two schools in Ri-

ject as one of their ownmembers had a childwith DS.“Ever since this has been our small con-
tribution to our community,” he says.

The drowning of a beautiful, vibranttwo-year-old girl on 20 December lastyear, changed her mother’s life fore-
ver.Not only did Claire Campbell, who lived
in Boston at the time of the accident, butnow lives in Kuils River, put her studies onhold, but last Saturdaynight saw the launchof her charity project Starfish for Sofia inmemory of her daughter, Sofia, to raisefunds to send young children to swimmingclasses.Since Sofia drowned in a koi pond on a
farm near Tulbagh, 31-year-old Claire hasaccomplished a great deal.
Search for meaning“I began to thinkabout founding a charity
in memory of Sofia during the week afterher death. Inmy shocked and emotional sta-te, I wanted to find meaning in what washappening to me and I did not want peopleto simply forget about her after the dust hadsettled.“After chatting to a friend, I decided to
start a charity to send young children toswimming classes.“In the lunch break, I started the Starfish
for Sofia Facebook page on my phone. Bythe end of the day, I had about 500 likes!“The idea rapidly evolved and people be-
gan to contact me: an accountant from a pu-blic benefit organisation accounting firm; alawyer who offered to do all my legal andcontract work pro bono; marketing people;graphic designers; printing companies; afantastic website architect... the emails be-gan flooding in.“Today we are a non-profit company wai-

following of over7 800 people and anoffice inDurbanvillewith myself and twoothers sendingemails and makingcalls to raise fundsand promote our or-ganisation all day,”she said. Her charity was
officially launchedat Bloemendal Res-taurant.Sofia drowned on
the first day she andher dad Nacho, Clai-re’s enstranged hus-band, arrived on thefarm. They went foran afternoon nap,but Sofia woke upand slipped out ofthebedroom. She fellinto a large koi pond in the courtyard anddrowned.“I was cleaning the kitchen when Nacho
called me late that Saturday afternoon. Hewas absolutely hysterical and I didn’t un-derstand him at first. Then I realised thathe was saying ‘Sofia’s dead! Sofia’s dead!’over and over again. I remember falling tothe floor in shock and disbelief. It felt as ifsomebody had ripped out my heart.”“Day to day is difficult for me. There are
good days and bad days. I struggle to get outof bed in themornings, but I know that I ha-ve to, because Sofiawas so vibrant and alivethat shewouldnothavewantedhermommyto be sad and lie in bed and cry all day. Hermemory motivates me to be strong so thatI can do good in her name.“The whole experience of losing a child
is awful and hard. There were obviouslymoments that weremore awful than others,
Challenges“Each day brings new challenges. The ab-
solute horror that I have to live with everyday is that she was all alone when she died, probably scared out of her mind and wan-ting her mommy to come and rescue her. Those must have been her last thoughts. And I wasn’t there for her. I have to dealwith that each day,” Claire said. She has decided to take a sabbatical from
her final year speech, language and hearingtherapy studies at Stellenbosch University.“I believe that Starfish for Sofia has beco-
me my life’s inspiration – I would like tohelp as many children as I possibly can tolearn how to survive when they fall into thewater,” she said.

hierdie konsert ’n gulde geleentheid omdie man in lewende lywe te sien.Anders as met ander verskeidenheids-

Due to the rise in the number of vehicletheft, housebreaking and theft out ofmotorvehicles in Kraaifontein, the police urgethe public to be more vigilant. They shared a few useful safety hints:.Ahigh fence around thehousewith loc-
kable gates is much safer than a high walldue to the advantage of the improved visi-bility it provides.
. Ensure that your gates are locked atall times and the keys cannot be reachedeasily and are not lying around uncontrol-led.
. Security lights on the outside of thehouse improve physical protection for ahouse, farm or smallholding.
. The light must be directed away fromthe house and must allow the occupants touse windows without being observed fromoutside.
. Ensure garden tools such as axes, spa-des and ladders that can be used in an at-tack are locked away when you are notusing them.
. Always lock your vehicle doors andkeep windows closed.
. Park your vehicle in places that arewell lit.
.Limit your trips at night or at least takesomeone with you.

Poor Pieter Meissenheimer wasso badly treated by thosedisgusting, loud black peoplewho served him at the Durban-ville Vida e Caffè recently thathe felt compelled to write inand complain about his terribleexperience. Worse, he will haveto live with the horrifyingreality that his letter exposeshis woeful ignorance andshameful racism. How will hecope?
May I suggest, Mr Meissen-heimer, that you refrain fromfurther public displays of yourparochial prejudices. TheDurbanville Vida e Caffè ismuch the same as every otherin the chain. The concept iswidely known and wildlysuccessful.
Far from being a “township”experience, it is meant to evokethe atmosphere of a busy streetcafé in Europe, Lisbon inparticular. As the companystate on their website, it issupposed to be “a slice ofEurope on African streets”. MrMeissenheimer disagrees, considering it a foul intrusionfrom the dark heart of the“township” into his lily-whitesuburban haven. Even if itwere a “township” concepttransplanted to suburbia, surelyit would not deserve suchvitriol. A slice of Africa on anAfrican street?
It may come as a surprise toyou, Mr Meissenheimer, but wereally do live in Africa. If you’drather not, please take yourselfoff to those Nordic climeswhence (judging by yoursurname) your more distantancestors, along with mine andthose of every other humanbeing, came from right here inAfrica.
So, if you’d care to relax alittle and let some light intoyour heart, then please feel freeto remain and enjoy the noisy, colourful, dangerous, wondrousoriginal motherland.

Funders needto base actionon new realityMajor funders of grassroots programmesshould question whether they’re basingdecisions of aid on pre-1994 perceptions.
The noble NSFAS government studentloan and bursary scheme has beenhamstrung by corruption and whileprivate donors continue to fill the gap, most of the funding goes to the sameschools. It looks good on the corporateCSI budget, but how do we know iftangible needs are being met?
How long do post-apartheid generationshave to live in the shadow of labels suchas “disadvantaged” or “previouslydisadvantaged”? Not every white child isrich. Not every black child is poor. Theseare inconvenient truths.
It would behove donors to launchinvestigations into genuine need andcome face to face with ground levelreality. But that would require bravery, commitment and courage – and gettingout of multi-level plush offices.
It might surprise corporate decision-makers to find the leafy suburbs havepeople who are battling to make endsmeet in this depressed economy. Andmany who plead poverty while living intownships have far more disposableincome than is declared.
It is time to reassess our perceptions. This would be a step towards realequality in this new South Africa.
Without authentic action our countrywill not move into a position of equaldistribution of wealth. We will not builda non-racial nation with a true middle-class to oil the wheels of the economy.

Coveted silver status for marathon
At the launch of the 2015 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon were (from left) Francois Pienaar(marathon ambassador), Roxanne Hoorn (City of Cape Town), George Grieve (MD of Vital), ElanaMeyer (marathon ambassador) and Carl Roothman (CEO of Sanlam Investment Retail).PHOTO:CARINA ROUX
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon hasbeen awarded the coveted Silver Labelstatus by the International Association
of Athletics Federations (IAAF).It is the first marathon on the continent
to be awarded this classification.According to Wikipedia, Silver Label sta-
tus means that at least five nations are to berepresented by runners with times fasterthan the IAAF’s guidelines. Additionally, the race course must be closed to vehiculartraffic and measured to the Association ofInternational Marathons and Distance Ra-ces (AIMS) standard, with full electronic ti-ming used to generate the results. The racemust be organised in a way that minimisesecological damage to the surrounding areas.A specified number of doping tests must becarried out, and prize money for the partici-pants should be equal, irrespective of genderor nationality, though additional rewardscan be given to runners from the host nation.
This year the marathon will be held overthe weekend of 19 and 20 September. Entriesopened on 1 March and organisers expect 20000 entries. The marathon has R1.6 millionin total prize money.
“The bar has certainly been raised quitehigh and as we launch this year’s event, the
organisers have set yet another challenge –the IAAF’s Gold Label status for the SanlamCape Town Marathon. We are confident thatthis will also be achieved in no time,” said
Carl Roothman, Chief Executive in SanlamInvestments retail division when he spokeat a media briefing.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one
of the first sporting events in South Africato be declared carbon neutral.
This is a significant milestone which hasalready been reached towards the achieve-ment of the Gold Label status.
Additionally, Africa’s largest vitaminsand nutritional supplements brand, VitalHealth Foods, has been appointed develop-mental partner for the Sanlam Cape TownMarathon to help assist with the develop-ment of the sport in South Africa.
Technical partner Asics, along with San-lam, will sponsor a trip for two people to takepart in the 2016 Paris Marathon, as a prizedreward for a lucky entrant wanting to expe-rience what the essence of a world-class GoldLabel status marathon is.
“The Silver Label status puts the SanlamCape Town Marathon on the race calendarfor the top tier international runners in 2015.We are excited to be planning a spectator ori-entated event over the Heritage Day wee-kend,” said Elana Meyer, Marathon brandambassador.
Last year’s event in September drew over12 500 athletes, 5 000 more runners than par-ticipated in the previous year. It was won byKenyan Willy Kibor Koitile in a time of2:10:45.

“There is no doubt it meets a commu-nity need. It is a professionally run eventthat gives active, health-conscious peo-ple the chance to combinehearty exerci-se with a fun day out with family andfriends amidst beautiful scenery. The at-mosphere of relaxed social interaction isclearly attractive,” Moosa said.
“At the same time, all those taking
part are helping others less than fortuna-te than themselves because the RedCross Children’s Hospital is a major be-neficiary of the event,” Moosa said.
