The City of Cape Town’s dam levels areat slightly lower levels than previousyears.
However, careful planning and a tho-rough infrastructure replacement andmaintenance programme mean projecteddemand is unlikely to exceed projected sup-ply for the foreseeable future. Residentsare, however, reminded that responsibleuse of water is critical to ensuring supplyfor future years.“Due to a slightly drier start to the year,
City dam levels are lower at this time of ye-ar than they have been during the same pe-riod in recent years. An analysis of the past20 years, however, shows the average levelis only slightly lower than average for thistime of year. Moreover, as CapeTown recei-ves most of its rainfall during the coming
winter months, any concern would be pre-mature as rainfall during the months of Ju-ne, July and August will determine the le-vel of storage into 2016,” says the City’s ac-ting mayco member for utility services,Brett Herron.Residents are assured the City’s model-
ling and operation of the dams within theWestern Cape Water Supply System(WCWSS) allows for periods of low rainfall, and planning takes into account possibleconditions for a number of years.“Reserve storage and, if necessary, the
imposing of (relatively) short-term waterrestrictions, will allow for continued watersupply during severe droughts,” he said. Some of the measures to curb water was-
tage include asset management, pressuremanagement schemes, pipe replacement
programmes, leak detection and educationandawareness onwater saving andalterna-tive water sources.“Leak repairs on private properties are
also being offered to indigent customers. These initiatives have helped to successful-ly suppress the water demand across the ci-ty to below maximum levels reached in2000,’’ added Herron. The Western Cape Water Reconciliation
Strategy aims to securewater supply for theforeseeable future. A number of potentialwater supply schemes, including surfacewater, groundwater, seawater desalinationand wastewater re-use schemes, have beenidentified as possible future sources.V For more information about the Water and Sanitation Department, visit http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/water/Pages/default.aspx.

Members of the Telkom Athletics Club onSaturdaywalked from the Pinelands SportsClub to the Vincent Palotti Hospital in sup-port of club member Trevor Ward.On 1 May Ward was hiking with familyand friends when he fell 15 metres and in-jured his back. He is currently in ICU.His wife Carol said club members initial-ly decided to run to the hospital, but be-cause of logistical problems, they walked.“About 50 of people, not only from the club, pitched for the walk. When we got to thehospital we stood on a little grass patch, prayed and waved to the window of theroom in which he is recovering. One of mychildren was outside and the other insideso they Skyped to himwhatwas happening.I am sure he appreciated it,” she says.Carol said Trevor was an avid runner aswell as a volunteer for theMountain SearchandRescue team. “Wedon’t knowwhathap-pened on the mountain because he was anexperienced hiker. According to the peoplewhowere there he didn’t even screamwhenhe fell. We suspect that he fainted or had ablack-out, because he knew how to be safeon the mountains.”Carol says the doctors informed her thatit is difficult to recover from an injury likethe one Trevor has. “It is still early days, but we believe it is not his destiny to be con-fined to a wheel chair. We hear lots of sto-ries about how people will not be able to
walk again and then they do. I do realisethat even if hewalks again, hewill probablyneed a wheel chair now and then. I thinkwe will have a better understanding of thechallenges ahead once he goes into rehab.I am aware that our lives will never be thesame after this,” says Carol.

Remedial and maintenance work to im-prove the coastline between Milner-ton and Melkbosstrand is underway,
but authorities say there is a long way togo.
Dune erosion, a collapsing parking areaand improvements to SilverstroomstrandResortwerehot topics at the recentBlaauw-berg subcouncil meeting.
City sports, recreation and amenities de-partment official Megan Lukas gave anoverview on the maintenance plan for thecoast and raised various issues.
DunesLukas said there are serious issues along
Table View beachfront. The dunes nolonger represent a “natural system” as de-velopment has hampered their natural mi-gration. The “artificial system” needs ongo-ing maintenance.
Lukas said natural migration would seesand move through a Table View channel.
“But because of development the sandhas nowhere to go and the erosion and en-croachment of the dunes impacts negative-ly and generally the aesthetics are not goodand we receive many complaints.”
Lukas illustrated how migrating dunesimpacted on the aesthetics and explainedthe main issue was the parking area at BigBay beach.
In these pictures, cracks in the fallen pie-ces of concrete are evident. Lukas said theyare working with the transport and storm-water departments to rectify this.
She said a combination of factors causedthis and one possibility was the irrigationsystem along these dunes.
In terms of the National EnvironmentalManagement Act (NEMA) work along thissection would trigger listed activities andrequire permission from provincial gov-ernment.
Lukas said a Maintenance ManagementPlan (MMP) was submitted in an attempt toobtain environmental authorisation.
“Luckily, after meeting with provincialofficials on site and due to the urgency ofthe matter, it was decided the MMP whichis a shorter document and is easier to getapproved, be submitted. We have also metwith the biodiversity department who areexcited about assisting us with vegetationwhich is most suited for dunes.”
Dolphin BeachAt this beach, officials believe its best to
allow the dunes to migrate, amid plans bythe parks department for a major upgrade.
“It’s been decided that the main dunesthat are encroaching onto the public openspace be left. We decided not to try and fightthe system because clearly it’s [the dunes]moved onto the fence and pathway and in-steadof spendingmoneyon these things, wedecided to move these items closer to theroad.”
She said the upgrade will consist of pro-viding a new pathway and possibly an out-door gym. Many of these ideas were pre-sented during a workshop for the World De-sign Capital but Lukas said while therewere many great ideas, the biggest issue isfunding.
“Many of the ideas are great but budgetis always an issue and therefore some ofthese ideas are not feasible. We are lookingat ways to incorporate some of these ideasand make them more affordable for theCity.
Altered dune systemcreates a headache

One of the students, BonginkosiJack, who braved the cold waterhimself to ensure the safety of thesechildren aged between four and 13,said they particularly chose thechildren to be taught this skill sincethere are many South Africans whoare not able to swim and who couldeasily lose their lives just becausethey don’t possess this essentialskill.
Uneccessary drownings“Not being able to swim is the
cause of too many unnecessarydrownings, and we wanted to equipthe children of Rainbow of Hope tobecome water safe and, of course, tosee a smile on their faces,” Jacksaid.
UWC swimming coach KeithDankers and student coach Khanyi-so Zase taught the kids to enter thepool, facing the water, encouragedthem to swim with their eyes opento familiarise themselves with theslight burning sensation of swim-ming pool water, and how to maketheir way towards the edge of thepool if ever they’re in trouble.
“The plan is to have them comehere on a regular basis until they’vereached a level where they are confi-dent in the water, without fear ofhaving their head submerged under
water,” Jack explained further.“Also so they could have enough
confidence to know they will be ableto help themselves to get to safety ifthey should ever fall into trouble.”
The children are in the perma-nent care of housemother Alison Al-exander, who has also adopted adaughter Zoë, who was born with fe-tal alcohol syndrome.
“I really appreciate what the stu-dents want to do for these childrenby trying to make them water safe,”says Alexander.
“Many of these children have ei-ther been abused, abandoned or ne-glected and this water safety is a val-uable skill for them to have.
Option for adoption“Some of their mothers are spend-
ing time in drug rehabilitation cen-tres, but will eventually claim theirchildren once they’ve overcometheir addiction. ”
“As for the rest, there is still anoption for adoption, but the tenden-cy with the public is to only want toadopt children when they are ba-bies. We have four siblings whohave to be adopted together, but thechances of this happening is veryslim,” she said.
The EMS students have no plansto halt the lessons any time soon.
Three students from UWC’s Fac-ulty of Economic and Manage-ment Sciences are spreading
joy and saving lives by teaching wa-ter safety to children from the Rain-bow of Hope Orphanage in Good-wood.
Spontaneous laughter, splashingand kicking marked some fun-filledactivity at the University of theWestern Cape (UWC) swimmingpools recently as the children fromRainbow of Hope Orphanage inGoodwood were taught to becomesafe in the water.
It was off to a shivery start for thechildren at their very first lesson, thanks to unexpected maintenanceto the swimming pool’s heating sys-tem, but this didn’t stop them fromwanting to test the waters and learnthe basics of safety in and aroundthe pool.
Outreach projectThe orphanage was chosen as are
part of an outreach project for threeUWC Economics and ManagementSciences students. They chose toteach the children this particularskill since there are many South Af-ricans who are not able to swim -and who could easily lose their livesjust because they don’t possess thisessential skill.

Members of theBothasig policemadean im-portant bust when they arrested a personfor the illegal possession of crayfish onThursday.
While on patrol in Bothasig, Warrant Of-ficer Johan Esterhuizen and Constable Re-ginald Mars observed a silver vehicle closeto them.
“They were immediately on the alertwhen the driver noticed them and failed tostop at a stop sign. The members then follo-wed the vehicle, which skipped anotherstop sign.
They reached the vehicle as the owner
pulled into his drive way and proceeded tocheck the driver and the vehicle. Theyfound bags containing live crayfish. A fur-ther investigation netted a big haul of fro-zen crayfish stored inside the suspect’s ga-rage,” says polisce spokesperson JacquesMostert.

Recently, council voted theMunicipal Planning By-lawinto legislation, the latestarrow in its quiver of mana-ging the built environment, forthe following reasons:
1. National Government willintroduce the Spatial Planningand Land Use Management Acton 1 July 2015. Therefore, every municipality in thecountry has to adopt a by-lawwhich will authorise its ownlegitimacy as a local govern-ment in overseeing all plan-ning matters. To date, CapeTown is the only municipalityto implement this measure.
2. The by-law ensures theCity considers all planningapplications in a locally suitedcontext. We believe the innova-tive systems built into theby-law will reduce red tape, enable more responsivedevelopment regulation, andunlock investment potential.Furthermore, it will empowerthe City’s building inspectorsto be more responsive andequitable in addressing contra-ventions and residentialnuisances.
3. The by-law promotescritical aspects of good gover-nance, transparency andcivilian involvement in theplanning approval process.Posts have been advertised
and are being assessed for theformulation of a MunicipalPlanning Tribunal which willbe made up of independentmembers of the public as wellas City officials with relevantexpertise in land use, spatialplanning and development. Inthis manner, we are drawingfrom local resources to buildthe City that we collectivelyenvisage.
Governance is an ongoingconversation, therefore, theMunicipal Planning By-law willbe reviewed on an annualbasis.

wetenskaplikes – wat ons daarop wys datdie grootskaalse verwoesting van woudeen die besoedeling van die omgewinguiteindelik tot beurtsuurstof sal lei.Dán is die mensdom se beurt op aarde
finaal verby! So, wat gaan ons doen om dáárdie

Phone calls, banking, watching televi-sion or attending classes are all tasksseem straightforward and simple to
most, but for a large percentage of our popu-lation they are almost impossible.
As many who have hearing loss continueto suffer in silence, a local non-profit organi-sation is making their concerns heard.
The Association for Hearing Loss, Acces-sibility and Development (AHLAD) based inMilnertonhas raised several concerns aboutthe daily struggles hearing impaired per-sons.
The lobby group have been hard at worktacklingwhat they label anunwelcomingen-vironment.
Chairperson Michele Tonks explainssince the association was founded they havehad an uphill struggle in convincing deci-sion makers to hear their plight.
Little acknowledgementSimply, she explains almost every task is
a problem from phone calls to banking.“Those suffering from hearing loss are
marginalised in institutions, facilities orpublic spaces. A lot is being done to accom-modate physically disabled people in thiscountry, meanwhile those suffering fromhearing loss are ignored,” she says.
Tonks says despite several attempts tospeak to authorities, businesses and institu-tions, very few have acknowledged the needto accommodate those with hearing loss.
As an example, she explains her daughter(30) who has a cochlear implant, faces sever-al daily challenges.
“She can’t go to the bank because there isno loop system, so she can’t hear the teller.
If she is in an accident she cannot call theemergency numbers because she cannothear them. While she is fully capable of do-ing these simple tasks onher one, she is disa-bled by her hearing. This staggers her devel-opment.”
In consultation with members, Tonks saysthey discovered the access to basic serviceswas a common concern.
Awareness neededThey contacted various service providers
including banks, hotels, academic institu-tions and emergency services among othersand proposed alternative systems.
These include the installation of loop sys-tems and SMS lines which helps hearing-im-paired communicate effectively.
However, the response has been dismal. To counter this, the association will be
holding a public meeting to garner supportfrom affected citizens.
Tonks explains in addition to support, theorganisation plans to roll-out educationalprogrammes and awareness campaigns forthose affected and the public on what prod-ucts are available to them.
The meeting will be held at Bothasig Li-brary on Saturday 30 May at 09:30.
Among the speakers are Marie du Toitwho is involved with children with hearingloss. She will speak about Music Matters, atraining course which focuses on the child’sability tohear different instruments andme-lodic lines separately.
Lesley Shaw will speak on the inductionloop system and RSG presenter Fanie duToit will speak on hearing loss and disabili-ty.
V The meeting is open to all and entry is free. Formore information email [email protected].

Cape Town performance troupe Taare isbringing Bollywood to your doorstep.Founded by Ahneesh Valodia, Taare
aims to promote and preserve the Indianarts in “an original and creative manner”.By using Bollywood song and dance, Ah-
neesh says they make Indian arts more ac-cessible and appealing to audiences as wellas the troupe’s dancers, helping them main-tain a link to Indian culture and traditions.Ahneesh explains that the term “Bolly-
wood” refers to both traditional andmodernIndian dance styles. “It’s actually any styleyou can think of,” he says, “it’smore the cre-ative use of different dance styles.”
Dream makerAhneesh started dancing when he was
eight-years-old and he already knew thenthat that’s what he wanted to do for the restof his life. His plan was to pursue formal training af-
ter matric, but his “health started actingup”.Although he was diagnosed with Muscu-
lar Dystrophy, a degenerative muscle disea-se, Ahneesh performed as much as possible
throughout his teens, while he still could, until it got to the point where he needed toswop the stage for a wheelchair.Dancing had become the centre of his life
though and he couldn’t give up on his dre-ams, so he decided to switch performing forteaching and choreography.Knowing that “there is a way around
things” is what helped Ahneesh cope and bystarting the troupe, he gets to help other dan-cers achieve their dreams.Bollywood has always been Ahneesh’s
first love. As he child he used towatchBolly-woodmovies and try the dances himself. Alt-hough he’s a classically trained dancer, he’sBollywood work is self-taught.He started spreading the word about for-
ming a troupe in 2012 and contacted dancershe knewwere not actively performing at thetime. Through word of mouth, Taare grewand the rest, as they say, is history. In the beginning, Taarewould askdancers
to book spaces at UCT residences for rehear-sals. Today, however, they have a set venueat Rustenberg Girls High School where theyrehearse every Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00,with extra rehearsals when they are prepa-ring for a performance.Ahneesh says the troupe of 30 dancers is
made up of matriculants, students and pro-
fessionals. “They come from all walks of li-fe.” He says they are always open to newfaces and their audition process is open toanyone, with no previous dance experiencenecessary.
Nonprofit basisTaare perform a few times a month and
the group performs their own productionsalong with shows at charity, community orcorporate events.Ahneesh says Taare is the only Bollywood
dance troupe inCape Town to his knowledgeand the group runs on a non-profit basis re-lying on sponsorships and donations to keeprunning. At themoment, they are specifical-ly looking for someone to help with their so-cial media management. While there are Indian dance schools,
Taare operates more like a dance company.Ahneesh explains that his troupe exists to
provide a service to the community. Theyprovide a platform for dancer to nature theirtalents and bring Indian dance to awide ran-ge of audiences.V Visit www.taare.co.za or www.facebook.com/TaareDance for more information about Taare and theirupcomming shows, for links to their other social media platforms, to arrange an audition, or to find outhow to help the troupe in any way.

Amateur beats seasoned golfers
Atlantic Beach Classic champion Luke Trocado from Western Province PHOTO: IGT PRO TOUR CAPE
Top Western Province amateur LukeTrocado eclipsed seasoned campaig-ners Peter Karmis and Adrian Ford to
lift the Atlantic Beach Classic title on Wed-nesday.
The 19-year-old held his nerve to drain a35-footer for birdie at the 18th for an even-par72 and a one stroke victory on nine under207 in the second IGT Tour Cape event.
Karmis and Ford both registered 69s to tiefor second, four strokes clear of recent Me-tropolitan Classic champion Keenan David-se, who closed with a 70.
Trocado was two off the pace after an ope-ning 70, but used his home course knowledgeto carve out a four stroke lead with a secondround seven-under-par 65.
Meanwhile, battle-hardened Karmis car-ded rounds of 68 and 71 to start the finalround in joint second with Ford, who regis-tered rounds of 72 and 67.
Learning opportunityTrocado was justifiably nervous about the
last 18 holes, but believed the chance to chal-lenge the pros was a great learning opportu-nity.
“Peter is pretty famous for shooting 59 onthe Sunshine Tour. He has won twice inSouth Africa and once on the Asian Tour.
Ford was the number one ranked amateurin South Africa and has had some good re-sults on the Sunshine Tour and is a real figh-ter.
“I thought if I got it going again, I couldscore a runaway victory, but if I didn’t, itwould be a fight to the end. I knew theywould both bring it in the last round and I
was mentally ready for anything.”Ford notched three birdies in a flawless
front nine to join Trocado in the lead afterthe young gun surrendered two shotsagainst a lone bogey, while Karmis turnedin one under.
The Asian Tour champion took pole positi-on with birdies at 13, 14 and 17, while Troca-
do had a birdie-bogey combination at 13 and14 and Ford traded a pair of birdies for twobogeys on the back nine.
Karmis was nine under and Ford and Tro-cado a further shot adrift, but Karmis bogey-ed the 18th and Trocado responded by drai-ning the long birdie putt for victory.
Great experienceAccording to the amateur rules, Trocado
earned just R4 500 of the guaranteed R12 000first place prize money, but the breakt-hrough meant more than the cheque.
“I am really grateful that the IGT Tour haslaunched here in the Western Cape, becausenow we have the same opportunity to compe-te against the pros and learn from them asthe guys in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal,” hesaid.
“Playing with Peter and Adrian was anunbelievable experience for me. You thinkyou’re good enough, but it’s not until you’veproven yourself that you can really afford tobelieve it. This win has given me a great dealof courage and confidence.
“Of course I am partial to Atlantic Beach, but I have to say, the staff and managementwent all out to give us a great tournamentand I am very excited that I could score myfirst IGT Tour win here at my home course.”
