As part of a Mandela Day initiative, Pam

Golding Properties is hosting a street store

    and collecting warm clothing, blankets,

shoes, food and other items for the home-

    less.

The street store is taking place on Satur-

day 16 July at the Elim Night Shelter in El-

    sies River.

Thanks to the generosity of local resi-

dents, last years event was a huge success,

and we are hoping this year to also make

a difference during these cold winter days

and nights, says Charlton Williams, Pam

Golding Properties area principal in the

    Goodwood, Athlone and Belhar areas.

In addition to handing out donated items

of clothing and blankets on the day, we will

also be providing the homeless with food

and hot beverages. Anyone who can assist

with donations is asked to drop these off at

our Goodwood office at Unit 3, The Boule-

vard, 159 Vasco Boulevard in Goodwood up

until 17:00 today (Wednesday 13 July), or al-

ternatively, contact us and we will collect.

    O

perations at the De Grendel solid

    waste drop-off facility inParowNorth

will be inspected by the City of Cape

Town following complaints about the newly

    appointed contractor.

Waste-Mart has been awarded the con-

tract after the application for extension by

the most recent contractor, SA Metal, had

    been denied.

Now, since the beginning of this month,

peoplewhowant to drop off garden or build-

ing waste have been told to dump it in the

    corner somewhere, because there arent

enough skips, and those precious fewwhich

are on site are usually filled to the brim.

TygerBurger spoke to some of the irate

workers on site this week after a reader

phoned the newspaper to complain about

the pitiful service he has had to endure.

One of these workers, who prefers to re-

main anonymous, elaborates: It used to be

so beautiful here! Everything was working

smoothly. You must wait very long for the

trucks to collect the bins when theyre full.

The dump site was always clean. Now there

is a huge shortage of bins here, so what are

we supposed to tell the public?

A regular user of the facility, Charl Cil-

liers, says the facility is 100% worse than

ever before. I never used to have problems

coming here. Now the operations are poor

beyond belief! The containers are always

    full, he states.

There used to be more than 20 skips on

site, but now the emptiness of the ghost

drop-off facility leaves the impression of a

    failed operation.

SAMetals Kobus Prinsloo says they have

several other contracts for similar facilities

in the northern suburbs, but what he finds

strange is that the current contractor,

Waste-Mart, also has experience in manag-

ingdrop-off sites, because theyare in charge

of all the dump sites in the southern sub-

    urbs.

We always do our best to provide a ser-

vice to the City and to the residents, says

    Prinsloo.

We believe it is important for the public

to have a convenient and clean place where

they can go to dispose of their garden refuse

and rubble. During peak months, such as

December, wehad to call inmore trucks and

trolleys to ensure thebins are emptyand the

site is clean. The cleanliness is especially

important at De Grendel, because there are

rats something that could get out of hand

if it is not maintained, he elaborates.

From more than 20 skips, the site now

    boasts less than eight.

We only have onemixed bin and one rub-

ble bin, says one of theworkers. There are

no green bins and no wood bins! Before this

company took over we had four green bins

and six rubble bins. The people who show

up get unbelievably upset when they dont

have a place to dump. We were told to tell

them that they should dump in the corner

    somewhere.

When TygerBurger was there this week

some of the corners were full of rubble

something unheard of in the preceding

    years.

Councillor Leonore van der Walt and the

City of Cape Town say they are investigat-

ing the matter and will take action where

    needed.

TheCity also asks users to be patientwith

the new contractor, with teething problems

bound to occur in the beginning.

    The only comment Waste-Marts Paul

Jafta was prepared to give at this stage was

that they were busy sorting it out and

more bins were on its way.

Rubble and garden refuse lying strewn in the corner at the De Grendel solid waste dropoff facility in Parow North. The company contracted by

the City of Cape Town has to date not lived up to its predecessor, according to regular users and staff working there.

As part of a Mandela Day initiative, Pam

Golding Properties is hosting a street store

    and collecting warm clothing, blankets,

shoes, food and other items for the home-

    less.

The street store is taking place on Satur-

day 16 July at the Elim Night Shelter in El-

    sies River.

Thanks to the generosity of local resi-

dents, last years event was a huge success,

and we are hoping this year to also make

a difference during these cold winter days

and nights, says Charlton Williams, Pam

Golding Properties area principal in the

    Goodwood, Athlone and Belhar areas.

In addition to handing out donated items

of clothing and blankets on the day, we will

also be providing the homeless with food

and hot beverages. Anyone who can assist

with donations is asked to drop these off at

our Goodwood office at Unit 3, The Boule-

vard, 159 Vasco Boulevard in Goodwood up

until 17:00 today (Wednesday 13 July), or al-

ternatively, contact us and we will collect.

perations at the De Grendel solid

    waste drop-off facility inParowNorth

will be inspected by the City of Cape

Town following complaints about the newly

    appointed contractor.

Waste-Mart has been awarded the con-

tract after the application for extension by

the most recent contractor, SA Metal, had

    been denied.

Now, since the beginning of this month,

peoplewhowant to drop off garden or build-

ing waste have been told to dump it in the

    corner somewhere, because there arent

enough skips, and those precious fewwhich

are on site are usually filled to the brim.

TygerBurger spoke to some of the irate

workers on site this week after a reader

phoned the newspaper to complain about

the pitiful service he has had to endure.

One of these workers, who prefers to re-

main anonymous, elaborates: It used to be

so beautiful here! Everything was working

smoothly. You must wait very long for the

trucks to collect the bins when theyre full.

The dump site was always clean. Now there

is a huge shortage of bins here, so what are

we supposed to tell the public?

A regular user of the facility, Charl Cil-

liers, says the facility is 100% worse than

ever before. I never used to have problems

coming here. Now the operations are poor

beyond belief! The containers are always

    full, he states.

There used to be more than 20 skips on

site, but now the emptiness of the ghost

drop-off facility leaves the impression of a

    failed operation.

SAMetals Kobus Prinsloo says they have

several other contracts for similar facilities

in the northern suburbs, but what he finds

strange is that the current contractor,

Waste-Mart, also has experience in manag-

ingdrop-off sites, because theyare in charge

of all the dump sites in the southern sub-

    urbs.

We always do our best to provide a ser-

vice to the City and to the residents, says

    Prinsloo.

We believe it is important for the public

to have a convenient and clean place where

they can go to dispose of their garden refuse

and rubble. During peak months, such as

December, wehad to call inmore trucks and

trolleys to ensure thebins are emptyand the

site is clean. The cleanliness is especially

important at De Grendel, because there are

rats something that could get out of hand

if it is not maintained, he elaborates.

From more than 20 skips, the site now

    boasts less than eight.

We only have onemixed bin and one rub-

ble bin, says one of theworkers. There are

no green bins and no wood bins! Before this

company took over we had four green bins

and six rubble bins. The people who show

up get unbelievably upset when they dont

have a place to dump. We were told to tell

them that they should dump in the corner

    somewhere.

When TygerBurger was there this week

some of the corners were full of rubble

something unheard of in the preceding

    years.

Councillor Leonore van der Walt and the

City of Cape Town say they are investigat-

ing the matter and will take action where

    needed.

TheCity also asks users to be patientwith

the new contractor, with teething problems

bound to occur in the beginning.

    The only comment Waste-Marts Paul

Jafta was prepared to give at this stage was

that they were busy sorting it out and

more bins were on its way.

Rubble and garden refuse lying strewn in the corner at the De Grendel solid waste dropoff facility in Parow North. The company contracted by

the City of Cape Town has to date not lived up to its predecessor, according to regular users and staff working there.

    urgundy Estate and Summer

Greens were in the news for all the

    wrong reasons recently when six

residents were arrested on Thursday last

    week for their al-

    leged involvement in

    an online dating

    scheme. The sus-

    pects, aged between

    27 and 37, appeared

    in the Cape Town

    Magistrates Court

    the next day and

    have since been or-

    dered to be trans-

ferred in custody to Gauteng where they

will appear in the Pretoria North Magis-

trates Court on Friday 15 July.

It is alleged that a South African and

    five Nigerians targeted unsuspecting

women online and then conned them out

of thousands of rands. Hawks spokesper-

    son Captain Lloyd Ramovha elaborates:

    The 31-year-old South African woman,

suspected to have been the one who

cashed out all the moneymarket transac-

tions deposited by victims, was found

with R50 000 in cashwhen shewas arrest-

ed. Thus far the seven victims who have

come forward have been conned out of a

combined amount of close to R400 000.

He says ongoing investigations into the

online dating scam led authorities to ar-

rest two suspects in Burgundy Estate and

    the rest in Summer Greens.

The suspects would create fake ac-

counts on online dating sites to lurewom-

en. They would chat with the victims for

a while before starting to come up with

    different scenarios which would see

    women depositing or transferringmoney

to the banking details which the suspects

    would have pro-

    vided, he says.

    More victims

    are expected to

    come forward,

    with the net of

    deceit stretch-

    ing further than

    currently be-

    lieved. Ramov-

    ha says anyone

who has been duped out of money this

    way should contact the police.

This latest case of suspected online dat-

ing deception follows on another, also

committed by a Nigerian man last year.

In that case theman targeted vulnerable

victims for grooming before asking for

money for false emergencies. In his pro-

files he claimed to be wealthy and able to

repay monies advanced. The profiles in-

    cluded photographs and personal infor-

mation. There has since been a series of

court cases which dealt with other online

    dating scam incidents.

In almost every incident of this type of

crime over the last few years, a foreign

national was the main suspect or one of

the suspects. Most of these types of crimes

are built around establishing the trust of

the victim before asking for money.

On Monday 4 July at 13:00 Sergeant An-

    Street.

According to information, the owner of

    one wheel from his vehicle.

He pointed out the yard where the sus-

    pect ran into.

The officers searched the yard and saw

howthe suspect jumpedonto the roof of the

house and fled. After a short chase the offi-

cers arrested the suspect and the stolen

    wheel was recovered.

A pamphlet calling for homosexuals and

non-Muslims to be killed was recently dis-

tributed at an unnamed Parow night club

that caters mainly for gay patrons.

The origin of the pamphlet is being rig-

orously investigated by Parow police, and

according to reports a private investigator

has also been called to action by a Rylands

    businessman, whose name appeared on

the pamphlet. He has since claimed this is

not the first incident where his name was

listed on similar flyers distributed by

someone who is unhappy about a property

    he is linked to.

The flyer calls for people to join our lat-

est crusade and sponsor a rocket to kill

non-Muslims and kill all lesbians and

    gays all over the world.

    This year, Mandela Day starts

    46664 seconds early at Snow

    World at GrandWest Casino with

a motivational talk on Sunday 17

    July by intrepid adventurer Ry-

    an Stramrood.

The theme of the talk would be

    It is only impossibleuntil youdo

    it! andwith this being amessage

that is embodied in the life and

work of Nelson Mandela, it is

    very appropriate.

We decided to start our recog-

nition of Mandela Day 46664 sec-

onds before the day begins in

    recognition of Madibas prison

number and as a reminder of the

sacrifice he made to see change

in our country, says Mark Wil-

    son of Snow World.

At 10:58 on Sunday July 17, the

doors at Snow World will open.

The first 100 people who bring a

blanket in support of the Little

    Fighters Cancer Trust will get

    free entry to Ryan Stramroods

    motivational talk.

After the talk, 45minutes of fun

in the snow and on the slides can

be had by all. This sessionwill be

open to an extra 400 people and

once again a blanket will be the

    entry fee.

Little Fighters is one of the

    beneficiaries of the trust, says

    Louis Loubser, CMOof Fair Cape

Dairies. We have run a blanket

    drive in support ofLittleFighters

for the past four years, and this

year we are excited to have the

    support of Ryan Stramrood and

Snow World. Ryan is a great sto-

ryteller. He is also an inspira-

tional example of how an aver-

age Joe can step up and make a

    measurable difference to the

world, and as such is a true heir

to Mandelas legacy. Our aim is

to collect at least 670 blankets for

    our little cancer patients and

    their families, saysMandi Eras-

    mus from Little Fighters.

    We are also encouraging peo-

    ple to donate basic, non-perisha-

ble food so that we can provide

what is needed in the home as

well as the hospital. We are really

grateful for all the support, and

we know that the siblings of our

    cancer patients, who so often

have to gowithout, will really en-

    joy the fun day out.

Canal Walk has issued a challenge

    calling for participation and food

can collections in support of build-

ing Africas largest mosaic to help

    feed minds and bodies.

    On Madibas birthday each year,

South Africans are called to unite

and give at least 67 minutes of their

time to social investment, as Man-

dela Day and the 67 years of public

service he gave for social justice are

    celebrated.

In this spirit, Canal Walk Shop-

ping Centre and Leap Science and

    Maths Schools are partnering to

build a massive canned food mosaic

of the Mandela Day logo onMonday

    18 July.

Businesses and the public are in-

vited and challenged to join in and

    support this event through fund-

raising, donations of food cans and

    volunteering to build the mosaic.

Using 6700 kilograms of food cans,

    participants will build a massive

mosaic spanning eight by 16 metres

in the form of the iconic Mandela

    Day logo.

It will be a huge undertaking

needing many hands, lots of energy

and 17 000 cans of food.

There will be four time slots

    where volunteer teamswill spend 67

    minutes per session constructing

the mosaic using the donated food

    cans.

    To maintain the excitement and

    motivate teams the Leapmass choir

    will perform livemusic and dancing

in honour of Nelson Mandela, and

    sharemore about the social develop-

    ment projects Leap learners and

    teachers are engaged in.

Canal Walk has issued a challenge

    calling for participation and food

can collections in support of build-

ing Africas largest mosaic to help

    feed minds and bodies.

    On Madibas birthday each year,

South Africans are called to unite

and give at least 67 minutes of their

time to social investment, as Man-

dela Day and the 67 years of public

service he gave for social justice are

    celebrated.

In this spirit, Canal Walk Shop-

ping Centre and Leap Science and

    Maths Schools are partnering to

build a massive canned food mosaic

of the Mandela Day logo onMonday

    18 July.

Businesses and the public are in-

vited and challenged to join in and

    support this event through fund-

raising, donations of food cans and

    volunteering to build the mosaic.

Using 6700 kilograms of food cans,

    participants will build a massive

mosaic spanning eight by 16 metres

in the form of the iconic Mandela

    Day logo.

It will be a huge undertaking

needing many hands, lots of energy

and 17 000 cans of food.

There will be four time slots

    where volunteer teamswill spend 67

    minutes per session constructing

the mosaic using the donated food

    cans.

    To maintain the excitement and

    motivate teams the Leapmass choir

    will perform livemusic and dancing

in honour of Nelson Mandela, and

    sharemore about the social develop-

    ment projects Leap learners and

    teachers are engaged in.

Consumer studies learners from four Cape

Town high schools got to spend a week in the

busy kitchens at GrandWest Casino where

they were exposed to the diverse aspects of

working behind the scenes in the fast-paced

    hospitality industry.

    The learnerswere fromGoodwoodCollege,

    JGMeiringHigh, RavensmeadHigh and Sin-

    ethemba High.

Heidi Edson, group social economic devel-

opment manager for Sun International, says

the initiative, A day in the life of a chef,

was organised by GrandWests social eco-

nomic development department as an exten-

sion to its consumer studies upliftment pro-

    gramme.

The programme has already seen the con-

sumer studies classrooms at the four schools

upgraded to ensure better learning environ-

ments. The upgrade project included equip-

ping the classrooms with seven stoves each,

as well as crockery, cooking utensils and

    fridges. Industrial tables and cupboards

were installed, while various aesthetic im-

    provementswere alsomade, including fixing

the ceilings and repainting the classrooms,

    Edson says.

During their week in the kitchen the 40

learners spent time in various restaurant

kitchens as well as the hotels kitchen where

they enjoyed learning about pastry making,

kitchen hygiene, catering for banquets and

    other important functions.

The skills and knowledge gained will help

    themtoprepare for aMasterchef competition

to be hosted by GrandWest later this year.

One of the highlights of the initiative was

the development of a 72-page recipe book to

which the learners were able to contribute.

Once completed, each school will be given

80 copies of the recipe book to sell in aid of

    further equipping the consumer studies

    classrooms at their schools.

Edson says the culinary industry, like

many industries, faces a skills shortage and

there is a need to attract new blood and pas-

    sion to the field.

A day in the life of a chef

GrandWest chef Roxy Fabricius is shadowed by

Kean McGregor from JG Meiring High School.

    L

ameez Majiet from Thornton is liv-

ing proof that hardwork pays off. At

the age of 28, this City of Cape Town

employee has become one of the young-

est individuals to have completed her

    Masters degree in business administra-

    tion

Lameez spent most of her childhood

years in Portlands, Mitchells Plain and

    Heideveld.Growingup in a familywhere

her mom and dad were blue-collar work-

ers meant they all had to work really

hard for everything thatwas needed. She

knew from an early age that she and her

siblings would have to make the most of

public schooling. At the time, the

    thought of attendingauniversity seemed

nothing more than a distant dream.

Aside from the high cost to attend uni-

versity, the Majiet siblings had to work

to help supplement the family income.

She has been with the City of Cape

Town for just over four years and is

quick to point out that this degree does

not signal the end of her academic jour-

ney. Lameez has every intention of pur-

suing a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD)

degree in business administration in the

    not too distant future.

    Currently working in the information

    services and technology department,

Lameez would like to pursue a career as

a SAP software analyst within the City

    of Cape Town.

Lameez is wise beyond her years and

has some words of wisdom for her peers:

My advice to young people is that they

need to go out and look for opportunities,

    especially educational opportunities.

Each one of us needs to take responsibili-

ty and do something positive with our

lives. Being able tomake a success of our

lives is the best gift we can give our par-

ents and grandparents who fought for us

to be free and to get a quality education.

    Most importantly, surround yourself

    with peoplewhoare positive andprovide

the support needed to accomplish your

    goals, says Lameez.

    Citys Mayco member for corporate

    services and compliance, Xanthea Lim-

    berg, congratulated Lameez on her

achievement at such a young age. Her

focus andwill to succeed should be an in-

spiration to her peers. Quite oftenwe see

young people succumbing to peer pres-

sure for the wrong reasons and in some

cases straying away towards social ills.

My challenge to them is to follow Lam-

    eezs example. The opportunities are

plenty you just need to find them and

pursue what is of interest to you.

Lameez is among a group of 161 gradu-

ates who were recently awarded certifi-

cates of recognition for different levels of

    qualification.

    Young City worker

Former minister of finance, Trevor Manuel,

    congratulates Lameez Majiet on obtaining

    her degree.

tre, violinist Jeffrey Armstrong (19), will be

one of themain attractions at the upcoming

SA National Youth Festival concert, which

will be held at the centres auditorium on

    Saturday (16 July) at 19:00.

He will play a solo with the National

    Youth Orchestra.

    Hundreds of young musicians audition

    for a covetedplace in theNationalYouthOr-

chestra, and a select few are chosen to form

the green and gold national team each year.

    The orchestras programme includes

    Mahlers glorious Fifth Symphony andBen-

    jamin Brittens seldom-heard Double Con-

    certo forViolin andViola, writtenwhen the

composer was just eighteen. The orchestra

will be conducted by the sensational Ewa

Strusiska, a finalist and laureate at the

    prestigious Gustav Mahler International

    Conducting Competition in Poland.

The performance at the auditorium will

    be presented in associationwithFineMusic

Radio, as part of their drive to sponsor 67

radios for beneficiaries of the Cape Town

    T

he new manager at service organisa-

tion Mould Empower Serve (MES) in

    Bellville has personally witnessed

what difference the organisation can make

    in the lives of individuals.

Lilly Franks started the new challenge on

Monday 4 July. Before this, she worked at

MES in Kempton Park for six years.

I thank the Lord for the

    solid foundation that Ilse

(Kemp) has laid down and I

    realise that these are big

    shoes to fill. Ilses passion

    and dedication will definite-

ly leave a lasting footprint in

this city. I know that the

    MES Cape Town staff and

    supporters will miss her

    dearly, but we must now

    continue to change more

    hearts. Togetherwe can take

this branch of MES to the

    next level, she says.

For as long as she can re-

    member, she had this long-

ing to reach out to people liv-

ing on the streets. Because of this longing,

she started at MES Kempton Park and be-

came a staff member. It didnt take long to

realise she wanted to work with them, espe-

    cially after personally witnessing the

change in so many peoples lives.

My own heart has also been changed in

the process and it has been remarkable to

    personally witness hope being rekindled,

hunger pains stilled, the lonely befriended

and peoples lives changed for the better. It

was sad forme to leave the staff and support-

ers of the MES Kempton Park as my heart

    hasbeendeeply touchedbymany in the com-

munity that has taken hands to care for

those that are in need, she adds.

She is aware of all the wonderful relation-

ships that have been built in the Cape Town

community and is looking forward to being

part of the positive change that is taking

place there. I trust that I have the necessary

strength, passion and patience that is need-

ed, but I will never cease to pray for wisdom

    and guidance. I have no

    doubt that the Lords good-

    ness and faithfulness will be

    over the MES Cape Town

    branch, she says.

    Lilly studied BSC in mi-

    crobiology and biochemis-

try and is adamant that she

will make time to go hiking

    in Cape Town to experience

    and explore what nature has

to offer and to absorb the

    beauty of the Cape.

    I firstwant to get familiar

    with all the programmes and

get to know the staff well. I

have no plans to change any-

thing in the branch for the

remainder of the year. I think it will be good

to first get a clear understanding of how

things are operating before I look at chang-

ing or improving anything in the branch.

The people working at MES inspired me

to change. The values of the organisation,

commitment and passion for the poor

touched me deeply. I have this strong desire

to be of service to others and in the process

I discoveredmy true calling in life. Mywork

atMEShas givenmy life a newmeaning and

I am looking forward to the new chapter in

    my life, she concludes.

    he Compassionate Friends, an organi-

    sation that brings together grieving

parents, will hold their national gath-

ering at the Alta du Toit School in Kuils Riv-

er from 7 to 9 October. Registration for this

    event opened this week.

With love and compassion we invite you

to join us for a weekend of sharing, support,

understanding and love in working through

our grief. Our theme is Hope. By allowing

    ourselves to grieve,weallowothers to grieve

and understand the grieving process, says

    coordinator Suzette Venter.

Grieving gets us through this very natu-

ral process in our individualways. With this

weekend spending time with other grievers

we create hope and understanding that, by

allowing our grief, we can heal.

Venter says they have compiled a week-

end of sharing with one another and provid-

ing a platform for members to share their

hurt and opening up in a safe environment.

There will be time to listen to each other,

be creative together, listen to various speak-

ers and enjoy light entertainment. Then, for

me the most important is that we will have

an opportunity to honour our children on

Sunday. We will light candles and do a bal-

loon release. For the brave oneswewill have

an opportunity to speak about their child or

share a piece of music or poetry to uplift

    each other.

V Registrations are now open and can be obtained

by contacting Venter on their Facebook page https:/
