watermeter by syhuis enbydié van ’n buur-man Saterdag omstreeks 02:00 uitgeplof.“Van die huise was reeds sedert Woens-
dag sonder water.
“Ná so ’n geval is ’n mens sewaterrekening elke keer hoër,” sê hy.Britz sê hy is bly die mense se water is

Three suspects are behind bars thanks tothe vigilance of police on duty.Last week Constables Ralph Steyn and
Buhle Shili were patrolling N1 City Mallwhen they sawanOpel Corsa inwhich thedriver looked very nervous. Steyn andShili decided to search the vehicle andfound three rocks in the 29-year-olddriver’s possession.
According to police spokesperson War-rant Officer Wayne Theunis, hours laterthe same officers were again patrollingclose to the mall and saw a Land Roverand a VW Golf. “The members suspecteda drugdeal. When they approached the ve-hicles, the vehicles fled off. The membersfollowed and saw that the occupantsthrew small bags through the window ofthe Golf. The members managed to pullthe vehicle over and went back to pick upthe bags,” says Theunis.
Inside the five bags they found cocaine.“The two suspects were arrested and ap-peared in theGoodwoodMagistrate Courton charges of possession of drugs.”Theunis urgedmembers of the public to
inform the police when they see suspici-ous activities. “If it seems that people aredoing business at an odd place they areprobably busy with illegal activity. If amember of the public informs the policewe can catch them in the act,” says Theu-nis.

wie Garth Taylor is, ken almal sy trefferssoos “Try”, “Islands in the stream” en “On-ly with you”.

kom en hy gee my twee verskillende sto-ries. Eers sê hy sy oom in Bothasig hetdit vir hom gegee, toe sê hy weer hy hetdit by dieN7 opgetel.
Volgens Wayne Theunis, woordvoer-

A group of tough-as-nails cyclists from theMountain View Cycling Club in Goodwoodfinished a gruelling cycle tour to MosselBay on Friday last week to raise funds andawareness for theDownSyndromeAssocia-tion for the Western Cape (DSAWC).Nine cyclists – among them one young
adult with Down Syndrome – last Mondayset off for Mossel Bay from CapeGate Shop-ping Centre with the aim of raising aware-ness about Down Syndrome (DS) and thatpeople with DS can develop to their full po-tential and use their skills to contribute totheir communities. Likewise, they too havethe right to live with independence, dignityand respect as valued members of society.“This cycle club has adopted us as their
charity of choice since 2002 and they under-take this tour every year,” said DSAWCspokesperson Liza Rossouw.“We cycle from Cape Town toMossel Bay
and visit schools, churches and corporateswho all participate and support this annualevent,” she says.DSAWC was formed in 1976 and offers a
variety of services and support to peoplewith DS and other intellectual disabilities
and their families.“Our services and programmes are
aimed at improving the quality of life forpeoplewithDS, helping them find their pur-pose and take their rightful place in socie-ty,” said Rossouw.“We encourage amore inclusive environ-

boorlinge van my land wat my land kanhelp nie. As óns nie ontwikkel nie, salniks daar verander nie. Dít begin by op-voeding.” As dit God se plan is,sal ek eendag trou.” Hy glimlag makliken gee graag drukkies.
“Tshunza is ’n motorwag. ’n Mens hethom ’n paar keer per dag gesien as jyby die Old Oak-sentrum kom.
koek en deel dan aan die wagte ook uit.“Tshunza is ’n besonderse wag en mens;
Enige tyd as die wêreld my wil ‘af-skiet’, sal ek éérs ’n impak maak.”

Poor Pieter Meissenheimer wasso badly treated by thosedisgusting, loud black peoplewho served him at the Durban-ville Vida e Caffè recently thathe felt compelled to write inand complain about his terribleexperience.
Worse, he will have to livewith the horrifying reality thathis letter exposes his woefulignorance and shamefulracism.
How will he cope? May I
suggest, Mr Meissenheimer, that you refrain from furtherpublic displays of your parochi-al prejudices.
The Durbanville Vida e Caffèis much the same as everyother in the chain. The conceptis widely known and wildlysuccessful. Far from being a“township” experience, it ismeant to evoke the atmosphereof a busy street café in Europe,Lisbon in particular.
As the company state ontheir website, it is supposed tobe “a slice of Europe onAfrican streets”. Mr Meissen-heimer disagrees, consideringit a foul intrusion from thedark heart of the “township”into his lily-white suburbanhaven.
Even if it were a “township”concept transplanted to subur-bia, surely it would not deservesuch vitriol.
A slice of Africa on anAfrican street? It may come asa surprise to you, Mr Meissen-heimer, but we really do livein Africa. If you’d rather not, please take yourself off to thoseNordic climes whence (judgingby your surname) your moredistant ancestors, along withmine and those of every otherhuman being, came from righthere in Africa.
So, if you’d care to relax alittle and let some light intoyour heart, then please feelfree to remain and enjoy thenoisy, colourful, dangerous, wondrous original motherland.

SLICE OF LIFE
Funders needto base actionon new realityMajor funders of grassroots programmesshould question whether they’re basingdecisions of aid on pre-1994 perceptions.
The noble NSFAS government studentloan and bursary scheme has beenhamstrung by corruption and whileprivate donors continue to fill the gap, most of the funding goes to the sameschools. It looks good on the corporateCSI budget, but how do we know iftangible needs are being met?
How long do post-apartheid generationshave to live in the shadow of labels suchas “disadvantaged” or “previouslydisadvantaged”? Not every white child isrich. Not every black child is poor. Theseare inconvenient truths.
It would behove donors to launchinvestigations into genuine need andcome face to face with ground levelreality. But that would require bravery, commitment and courage – and gettingout of multi-level plush offices.
It might surprise corporate decision-makers to find the leafy suburbs havepeople who are battling to make endsmeet in this depressed economy. Andmany who plead poverty while living intownships have far more disposableincome than is declared.
It is time to reassess our perceptions. This would be a step towards realequality in this new South Africa.
Without authentic action our countrywill not move into a position of equaldistribution of wealth. We will not builda non-racial nation with a true middle-class to oil the wheels of the economy.

Just over 3300 years ago, the first five booksof the Bible – known as the Torah – writtenby Moses, was handed to a nation wande-ring through the desert. They safeguardedthis wisdom and it spread to the world. Itwould eventually be studied by millionsand millions of people. With so many people around the world,
Jews andChristians alike, whoare serious-ly turning to the Torah, Rabbi Bryan Operthas put together a Torah101 course on un-derstanding the Torah and how people intoday’s day and age are to relate to it.The programme is being run through
March on four consecutive Sundays from10:00 to 12:30 at the Paarl Synagogue in Sy-nagogue Street, from Sunday 8 March with“The why, what and how of the Torah”.The second and third sessions scheduled
for 15 and 22 March deal with the role andrelevance of the Oral Torah. They take anin-depth lookat theOralTradition receivedat Sinai, discussing questions that havevexed biblical scholars for many years:. Are there proofs coded into the Torah
that in fact an Oral Tradition exists?. What is the role and relevance of the
Oral Torah?.How can it still be authenticmillenia la-
ter?The final session, entitled “Timely Ques-
tions and Timeless Answers”, will be pre-sented on Sunday 29March. How the Torahspeaks to our generation, what relevanceit has for us today and what impact in canhave on 21st century dilemmas will be in-vestigated.Each of the four parts will end with a
question and answer session.
V To attend the course, send an email to Adilia([email protected]) to secure a place. Thecost of each session is R170 or R650 for the entirecourse. The notes on each lecture will be availableon the day. Should there be any problem regardingthe course fee, please feel free to contact Adilia.

Coveted silver status for marathon

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon hasbeen awarded the coveted Silver Labelstatus by the International Association
of Athletics Federations (IAAF).It is the first marathon on the continent
to be awarded this classification.According to Wikipedia, Silver Label sta-
tus means that at least five nations are to berepresented by runners with times fasterthan the IAAF’s guidelines.
