Sikelelwa Vuyeleni, a grade 11 learner from the Eersteriver Secondary School, stars in a brand new hit TV series Traffic! The series started this month and is broad- casted on eTV. Sikelelwa says her role in the new series is all thanks to her love and passion for the arts. “I love acting, being on stage and what I noticed is that I love being on camera,” Sike- lelwa said.
Ek was self surprised.
“Dis nou my besigheid.

A church service to pray for an end to theongoing gang violence at theWesbankHighSchool and the rest of the community washeld at the school’s hall this weekend.
The service comes after a spate of gang re-lated attacks at the school and in the com-munity where several young people wereinvolved.
Two scholars – Granton van Rooy, 17, andHerchelleCoenraad, 19 –were gunneddownearlier this year in suspected gang attacks.
Several parents have since complainedabout the violence at the school.
According to community members, gang-sters often gain access to the school by jum-ping over the fence.
The special servicewas attended by about50 community members, local church lea-ders and the police.
Colonel Luyanda Dhamoi, station com-mander of the Mfuleni police, said despitea reduction in crime compared to last year“one death is one too many”.
Brigadier Vincent Beaton, commander ofthe Kuils River Police Cluster, concurred. He said although the number of murdersand attempted murders had come down inthe area, people still feel unsafe.
“Wesbank is a crime hot spot. Crime is abig problem in the area and gangsterism isalso a concern at the school,” Beaton said.
Community must be involvedHe said the community needs to pray for
the children.“Some of them are so young and they can-
not get out of these gangs,” Beaton said.Joseph Adams, spokesperson for the
CommunityPolice Forum, said there are se-veral components of the police who regular-ly patrol the crime infested area.
“We have the police, the mounted unit, the red ants and flying squad as well as theMetro Police.
“We can have the whole police force here, but if we do not have the cooperation of thecommunity it’s not going to help,” he said.
He said community members do notspeak out about crime and he encouragedthem to report criminal activities.
Pastor Zwelibanzi Wright, leader of theKey to Heaven Ministries, said crime is nota God created evil, but man-made.
“What is not created by God, can be stop-ped,” he said.
Another pastor, Stefaans Vaas, leader ofthe church Ministry of Heaven, said chur-ches in the area should stand together.
Paddy Attwell, spokesperson for the Wes-tern Cape departement of education, saidthe department is aware of the attacks at theschool.
“The school has been liaising closelywithour district office and our Safe Schools divi-sion at these incidents.
“Safe Schools has arranged private secu-rity guards for the school.
“The school, our district office and SafeSchools are discussing programmes to dealwith the impact of gangsterism in the medi-um to longer terms,” Attwell said.

Residents in theMfuleni area have been en-couraged not to take the law into their ownhands. This plight follows after two men weregunned down last week allegedly for beinginvolved in house robberies. The men, one from Khayelitsha and ano-ther from Langa, were shot at a shop lastWednesday in Valengentambo Street, Drift-sands.An innocent bystander was also woun-ded.The police suspect it was a vigilante at-tack.JosephAdams, spokesperson for theMfu-leni Community Police Forum (CPF), saidthis week they receive little reports of vigi-lante justice in their policing district. He said to his knowledge the incident inDriftsands is a first of its sort.“In generalwedonot have a problemwithvigilante attacks. We had a bit of a problema while ago in Mfuleni itself, but that wasone or two incidents,” Adams said.He said members of the CPFmeet on a re-gular basis and that a report of each areagets submitted at the meeting.“We have not heard of such attacks inDriftsands,” he said.Warrant Officer Annaclette Mothoalo,
spokesperson for the Kleinvlei police, saidthe two victims were shot in the chest.“A lady who was also in the store waswounded in the leg and transported to a hos-pital,” Mothoalo said. The police are inves-tigtating a case of double murder and at-tempted murder.“One of the victims is still unknown to thepolice and we are trying to locate his nextof kin,” Mothoalo said. The second victimwas identified as 39-year-old ThembisileMatshobongwya.“The police found an illegal 9 mm Para-bellum pistol lying next to one of the men. They also recovered six cartridges.“We want the community to come for-ward and assist us in the case,” Mothoalosaid. The suspects are still at large.“When people take the law into their ownhands they cause more problems. Theyshould rather contact the police,” Adamssaid.Capt Nomathemba Muavha, spokesper-son for the Mfuleni police, said a total of 13firearms had been confiscated in the areathis month.Seven of these firearms were seized inWesbank. Two had been taken from theirlawful owners for safe keeping due to re-ports of domestic violence and four hadbeen seized in Mfuleni, Muavha said.“A total of 64 knives had also been confis-cated,” she said.

An innovative form of hydroponic ur-ban crop farming in Northpine hasboth the City of Cape Town, the Wes-
tern Cape provincial government and twoother South African provinces keyed up toget on the bandwagon.
In his backyard in Northpine, engineerVernon Pretorius is currently growing 800tomato plants on a piece of land no biggerthan 63 m², yielding enough tomatoes tosustain a financially viable small farmingbusiness.
What makes this crop unique is the hyd-roponic technique used. It’s called NutrientFilm Technique (NFT), whereby a veryshallow stream of water containing all thedissolved nutrients required for plantgrowth is re-circulated (into an under-ground water tank) past the bare roots ofthe plants in a watertight gully or channel.
The depth of the circulating water is veryshallow, which ensures that the thick mo-ist root mat, which develops in the bottomof the channel, is exposed to the air, resul-ting in an abundant supply of oxygen.
Says Pretorius: “The result of this uniquecombination of water, oxygen and nutri-ents is a much higher, faster growing yieldof high quality produce, making it very pro-ductive.
It yields double the produce than conven-tional hydroponic methods and ensures anall-year round production, by heating orchilling the water in which the cropgrows.”
Pretorius started researching NFT eightyears ago after seeing it at a small farm inOudtshoorn.
After intense research he set up the infra-structure and has since grown lettuce, strawberries and tomatoes.
Although the initial infrastructure costhim R90 000, this small scale crop can gene-rate a monthly income of R20 000.
Pretorius now envisions a communityproject in Northpine, creating an urban ve-getable “farm”, to empower the unemploy-ed and impart skills.
After approaching the city and the pro-vincial department of agriculture, bothparties visited Pretorius’s yard to look atthe initiative before vouching their sup-port.
“The idea is to rent a hectare of land fromthe city and apply to the province to fundthe infrastructure to set up a NFT smallfarm on the land.
“It will be a community project wherebyI will train unemployed men in Northpineto farm the crops of tomatoes cucumbersand lettuce. “A market has already beenestablished and the plan is to repay thefunds within three seasons,” he says.
Twigg said the City of Cape Town is cur-rently making work of the processes invol-ved in making the land available to Pretori-us.

Shack dwelling is the legacy ofover 300 years of greed andpersonal accumulation ofprivate realtors. There arehundreds of informal settle-ments scattered across SouthAfrica. I am the average South Africanand therefore enjoy a decentbraai at least once a week.
However, nowadays it isbecoming a costly exercise withthe prices of everything rising, but being a good South Africanit is not negotiable whether tobraai or not.
So to beat rising costs, Idecided to braai just once aweek and to buy my wood inbulk which will cost me less.Something I never consideredwas the slyness of the “woodpeople” – specifically referringto the people selling wood nextto Kenridge Primary School onweekends. About two weeks agoI had replenished my wood andwent to them and ordered 1 000pieces at R1 per piece – equat-ing to R1 000. It was to bedelivered at my home. In duetime they arrived and deliveredthe ordered wood. After theyleft, I was looking at theamount of wood and it seemedas if I was done in. Whencounting the wood, I discoveredthey delivered only 600 pieces, crooking me of R400. I am sodisappointed, because previous-ly I offered the same guys acold beer for their effort – thiswhile they were cheating meblind!

Although Frank’s idea hassome merit, it is actually prettysilly in the South Africancontext (“Introduce a sign fornew drivers”, TygerBurger, 26February).
Firstly, there is no legalrequirement in South Africa fora learner driver to display an“L” sign.
I refer you to the K53 web-site, under their FAQ:
“There is nothing in thelegislation concerning L-plates.They are not a requirement andare purely optional,” – see moreat www.k53-test.co.za.
Secondly, with the lawlessdriving mindset of a hugeportion of our population, yoursuggestion would not work.
The only way to fix drivers’attitudes is to double our trafficpolice and increase penalties, atthe same time as removing thethousands of unroadworthy andunlicensed vehicles and driversfrom our roads.

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes
With their mellow tunes andeclectic style, this Bracken-fell band really does cover
all bases. In the short time they’ve been to-
gether, acoustic duo, Stone Jets ha-ve already proven that they can sa-tisfy almost any taste. From &Union and Alexander Bar
in Cape Town, to Bay Harbour Mar-ket and Ellingtons, vocalist GivenNkanyane and guitarist, ManfredKlose, are comfortable on almostany stage.Given has a novel way of explai-
ning the band’s sound: “Thinkabout a mixture of beef stroganoff, with chutney and banana.”“It doesn’t seem like it works, but
that is some delicious stuff.”Moving away from food,Given ex-
plains that their music is a mixtureof everything they like which stemsfrom where they come from. Forexample, Given comes from an R’nB, gospel, jazzy background, whileManfred has more of a rock back-ground.
Song writingGiven says he likes to think their
music is a mixture of blues, a littlebit of rock, some folk, and “a hint ofeverything”.Manfred points out that they are
still growing with their sound andare writing as many songs as possi-ble at the moment, in an attempt tofigure out what exactly it is thatthey do.“For now we just want to make
goodmusic and seewhat people’s re-actions are to that,” he says.Stone Jets formed only last year,
but today (Wednesday) they are re-leasing their debut-EP,River, whichincludes five songs that the two re-corded when they came together. The EP will be available from
most digital distribution stores, butphysical copies will be available attheir shows. They are also looking
at distributing it through local mu-sic stores.Stone Jets are working on their
first full-length album which theyhope to release later in theyear. “Weare writing as many songs as wecan, so that our debut album is jam-packed with hard-knock hits,” Gi-ven says.Given started writing songs when
he lived inCapeTownbefore, but be-cause he didn’t understand the in-dustry, he decided to move back toJohannesburg, where he kept wri-ting and tried to put a band together.
Return to Cape TownHedrove back down toCapeTown
inMarch last year to record some ofthe songs he had written, which iswhere he met Manfred, who was toplay guitar on his recordings.“It was like Eskom had just swit-
ched the light on,” Given says. “Heunderstood my sound even before Ihad told himwhat it is Iwant to hearfromhim.”Given says it felt naturaltomoveback toCapeTownand startworking with Manfred.Highlights for the band include
performing at Alexander Bar andperforming after a band called The
Swifts, at the River Club.

Ajax Cape Town handed coach RogerDeSaaperfect debut on thebenchat theAth-lone Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Polok-wane City on Friday night.Goals from Keagan Dolly and Nathan
Paulse secured theUrbanWarriors all threepoints. The fixture was Roger De Sa’s first match
in charge of the Parow based side and hetook the bold move of making a few changesto the usual starting line-upwhichwas utili-sed by his predecessors.Captain Dominic Isaacs was suspended
for this match , while Rivaldo Coetzee wasmaking his debut for the team after comingthrough the youth academy.
Ajax Cape Town was quick off the mark, their quick inter-passingandrunningoff theball caught Polokwane City napping. Ernes-to Telinhowas first to test the Polokwane Ci-ty defence but he pulled his shot at goal wideof the target.
LeadBut the home side only needed five minu-
tes to take the lead when Keagan Dolly wasinvolved in a give and go with Paulse. Thepint-size player gathered the ball on a returnpass and fired in a low drive pastMadiriMa-rumo the Polokwane City goalkeeper. The Urban Warriors continued to pin the
visitors in their own half, putting pressureon theplayer inpossession, forcing theoppo-sition to rush their passes and lose possessi-
on.Galabgwe Moyana the visitors striker te-
sted Anssi Jaakkola the Ajax Cape Town go-alkeeper with his curling free-kick on thethe half hour mark while Polokweane Citycontinued to press hard for an equaliser.Ajax Cape Town doubled the score ten mi-
nutes after the restart through Paulse. Dollywon the ball back for the experienced stri-ker, who then ran upfield, cut inside the boxand sliced a ball past Marumo at the nearpost.
TempoAjax continued to play at a high tempoand
this clearly bothered the visitors as they toslowed the gamedownplaying long diagonalballs to get behind the Ajax Cape Town de-
fence.Thulani Hlatshwayomarshaled his defen-
ce well, containing the visitor’s attacks andsetting up the counter attacks from withinhis own half.Mention must be given to Ajax debutant,
Rivaldo Coetzee who at 17 was the youngestmember of theAjaxCapeTownside.Hepart-nered Hlatshwayo in the centre of the AjaxCape Town defence.Boebie Solomons threw on SiphesihleNzi-

were looking for as the win meant Ajax mo-ved into the top of the Absa Premiershipstandings.
