“I trust the South Africanpolice are already con-ducting a full investiga-tion as the cold bloodedkilling of a member of thelaw enforcement fraterni-ty cannot be left unpun-ished,” Plato said.

He urged the communi-ty of Eerste River, or any-one else, with informa-tion regarding the attackon Koopman, to report itto their nearest police sta-tion.

“Though no rewardwill bring back ConstableKoopman to his lovedones, I sincerely hope that anyone withcredible information about this incidentwill do the right thing and assist the policeand law enforcement authorities, even ifthe only motivation is the R50 000 rewardposted by the City of Cape Town for infor-

mation in this regard,” Pla-to said.

JP Smith, Mayco memberfor safety and security, saidthe motive for the attack isnot clear, although it is sus-pected that Constable Koop-man was targeted for hisservice pistol.

“The City’s Special Inves-tigations Unit is workingclosely with the South Afri-can Police Services to trackdown those responsible. It ishoped that the investigationwill reveal the motive, butalso result in the successfulcapture of the killers,”

Smith said.Koopman had been with the Metro Police

for 14 years.V Anyone with information can contact the Kleinvleipolice on 021 902 8300 or Crime Stop at08600 10111.

By die studio in Milnerton waar Suidoos-ter verfilm word, gee ’n stem oor ’n interkom

opdragte in militêre styl. “Oom Fasie andAB to studio one for scene two in the apteek.”Dan kom twee akteurs draffend verby, dieeen mompel nog vir oulaas die woorde wat

Following the recent racially motivatedstatements and subsequent comments madeespecially on social media, Belhar residentNawaal Fatar took a stance against these at-tacks using her campaign entitled #Racism-MustFall.

Nawaal, a promotional worker who is cur-rently completing her matric through nightschool, got some of her friends together fora photo shoot recently to help her share hermessage about racism. The photo depicts agroup of youngsters with colourful faces, ad-vocating for racism to fall.

Kuils River resident Anneke Scheepers, one of the friends, said with racial tension onthe rise, it seems people have forgotten whatit means to be tolerant.

“We are flirting more and more with ha-tred and discrimination. This path will notlead us anywhere good,” she said.

The group got together in Cape Town for

the shoot.“For Nawaal, all the conflict about race has

become too dominant in public discourse. Assuch, she has no social media account at all.She simply does not appreciate the negativi-ty, least of all with regard to race.

“Nawaal was more interested in counter-ing all the anger and the racism so she setabout inviting her friends to partake in a pho-to shoot. Each of us was requested to writea message of hope, unity and anti-racism ona poster,” Scheepers said.

She said everyone enjoyed doing some-thing constructive, however small.

“And that was all that Nawaal wanted –for us to experience some joy in that fadingnotion of the rainbow nation,” Scheepersadded.

Those interested can like the RacismMust-Fall Facebook page to support the group’scause.

“Selfs ’n rand of sent sal help.”Leandra, ’n enkelma, sê die huis se water

is onlangs afgeskakel.

Kleinvlei police issued a warning this weekof a suspected fraudster.

Captain Florina Muller, police spokesper-son, said earlier this week the suspect theyare looking for conned people out of cash andprivate property.

“This past week several fraud cases werereported at the Kleinvlei police station ofwhich one case involves a 41-year-old womanwho had an online relationship with this un-known suspect.

“The suspect told her he would send her apackage via post, but she needed to send himR1 500 through the bank first.

“The woman deposited the money. A whilelater he told her again to deposit anotherR7 500. The woman suspected that something

was wrong and refrained from depositingthis huge amount,” Muller explained.

It is still unclear what the content of thepacket was.

Muller said another woman, this time a 51-year-old, had suffered a similar fate.

“This woman met the suspect on Facebook. He said he repaired laptops and told the vic-tim that he would collect her laptop. The sus-pect turned up at the complainant’s house tocollect her laptop, however, to date the com-plainant still hasn’t heard a word from theso-called laptop repair guy,” Muller said.

At this stage police are unclear about theman’s identity but suspect he is involved inboth cases. The police are asking the commu-nity to be alert about promises made on socialnetwork sites by potential fraudsters.V Anyone with information can contact the Kleinvleipolice on 021 902 8300.

Dump now ahealing gardenRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

Having sufferedmany setbacks and be-ing disabled, Eerste River residentVanessa Anthony believes her gar-

den, which was once a rubbish dump, nowserves as a reminder of how easily one’s lifecan change.

Vanessa, amother of two and grandmoth-er to three, had a challenging life – one filledwith hardship and despair.Having worked as a political activist who

helped formed the United DemocraticFront, Vanessa says she remembers herdays as a fugitive often hiding from theApartheid government for being involvedin political rallies.

“I fled to Hout Bay where I hid from thepolice. There I discovered another type ofexploitation,” Vanessa explains while sit-ting inherplant andvegetable gardenatherhouse in Dove Street, Eerste River.

The plight of the community ignited heractivist spirit even further.

“My daughter was born with a third kid-ney due to the poor water quality.

“Shehad toundergo several operationsasa result and spent many days in hospital,”Vanessa remembers.

“We had to fight for clean water – waterwhich my daughter needed.”

Vanessa even went as far as Canada toseek aid. “We sought support due to theforced removals aswell.Wealso sought sup-port from our learned exiles. Some cameback after twenty odd years; some did not.”

At one stage Vanessa had her house setalight due to her political involvement.

With the help of some friends she com-pleted her studies at university andworkedas a counsellor at several organisations.

“Things started to not go well for me atsome stage. While I was helping other peo-ple, my own life ended up in trouble. I had

trouble in my marriage, I felt drained anddepressed.

“Our family had to deal with drug prob-lems as well. I was physically and mentallydepressed,” Vanessa says. The family lost their house and had to

move in with relatives. To make matters worse, Vanessa broke

her leg after falling on some rocks – an inju-ry which saw her wheel-chair bound forsome time.“I also developed a drinking problem at

one stage.“We were homeless for a while until my

friend and mentor, Zubeida Jaffer, steppedin. I was told to get a piece of property andthey would raise funds and get us a bunga-low.”The family managed to find the plot, one

once used as a rubbish dump. Today, thefamily uses the very same soil to their bene-fit and that of the entire community.“Plants and vegetables started growing in

one corner of the property, a spot where Ionce threw out old and wasted vegetablesout of utter frustration.”Today her garden is a tapestry of plants

and vegetableswhereVanessa grows pump-kins, carrots, spinach, butternut and toma-toes. Basil, mint, thyme and roses are alsofound in the garden – often used by manyinDoveStreet asnatural remedies,Vanessaexplains. The vegetables, she adds, are distributed

among the residents in the street – especial-ly over the winter periods.

“I often joke and tell them all they needis a stock block; we provide the veggies.“It feels good to give back to the communi-

ty. The appreciation they show makes itworth my while,” Vanessa says.

She says the garden helped her with herhealing process. “Sharing these blessingswith other people who do not have, makesone feel good. I feel very blessed.”

Parents of young children have beenwarned that they only have one month leftto enrol their little ones at school for the2017 academic school year.Last week, provincial education minis-

ter Debbie Schäfer, said the department of-ten encounters problemsat the start of eachschool year.“At the start of every year in theWestern

Cape, with 2016 being no exception, we findthat many parents enrol their child for thefirst time on the first day of school.“While teaching and learning begin on

the first day of school at most schools dueto forward planning, at some schools teach-ing time is disrupted as district officialsand principals are instead dealingwith lateapplications for school from parents whoneglected to enrol their children timeous-ly,” Schäfer said. This year, to try and assist the depart-

ment and schools, the departmentlaunched an early enrolment campaign for2017.The deadline for these applications is

11 March – three months earlier than 2016.Parents are encouraged to apply in good

time and to more than one school.

ger of deure word afgetrap, is by die verga-dering gesê.

It seems Golden Arrow Bus Services(GABS) was as disgusted by an accusationof one of their drivers allegedly jumping ared robot while texting, as the reader whoalerted them.

The complainant was driving behind abus at the traffic intersection at Robert So-bukwe Road near the Middestad Mall onFriday afternoon when it happened.

She jotted down the registration number, and the media liaison for GABS, BronwenDyke, responded immediately.

“GABS was extremely concerned to learnof allegations that one of our drivers wasmaking use of a cellular phone while be-hind the wheel,” Dyke said in response toa media enquiry.

“This is completely unacceptable behav-iour and is a direct contravention not onlyof our internal driver rules but of trafficlaws.”

Dyke encouraged the public to follow thecomplainant’s lead and report any concern-ing activity or behaviour.V Complaints can be directed by phone to0800 65 64 63 or you can send an email [email protected].

sporadies daar plaasvind.Kol. Pieter Galant, stasiebevelvoerder, is

Sedert 1 Januarie is 85 inbrake by huiseen 10 by ondernemings aangemeld.

“Liewe Heksie: Flower Power was ama-zing! Ek het lanklaas so hap-py by ’n show uitgestap!

Bespreek by Computicket.

Champ returns for Power Series

Former V8 Masters champion Marcel Angel (1) is going to be in action in an even more powerful V8 racer on Saturday. PHOTO: DAVE COLINS

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

With the first round of the Power Se-ries this coming Saturday, set tolaunch another season of red hot

racing at Killarney, interest in the changesto the driver, rider and mechanical combi-nationshasalreadybecome the subject of ex-cited braai-fire conjecture. An interesting feature of the Bold Marine

GTi Challenge is that Table View’s reigningdouble champion Paul Simon is away onbusiness and will miss his opening pointscoring opportunity. This should allow driv-ers like Marco Busi, a promising class Ayoungster from Melkbosstrand, as well asZaki Hendricks who finished second overalland first in class B last year, to notch up ahead start in the title chase.Changes in the popularMastersV8 catego-

ry will see the drivers racing under newrules that restrict thenumberof racing tyresthey are now allowed to fit during the sea-son.However, they are going to be permittedthe use of more engine power than they en-joyed in thepast. This shouldmake their rac-ing faster and even more exciting. And although reigning champion Richard

Schreuder will be everyone’s target here, itshould be borne in mind that multipleformer titleholderMarcel Angel beat him inthe penultimate, as well as the last events inthe recently completed 2015 season. Then there’s that brilliant British driver

Steven Young who has to fly out from Lon-don to compete in Masters V8 events at Kil-larney. And although he only began almosthalfway through the previous champion-ship, he was still able to come from behindand finish an excellent sixth. Young’s inter-national experience on some of the best cir-cuits in Britain and Europe is going to be adecided advantage on Saturday. The three new drivers in this category are

certain to find that the huge amount of pow-er available at the backwheelswill take timeto get used to. This could result in a separatebattle at the rear of the field where specta-tors will be able to spot any emerging talent. There was an intriguing situation in the

2015 Midas Clubman title chase. Althoughthe overall honours were eventuallyclaimed by Francois van Tonder in his class

E VW Polo near the back of the field, it wasstars like the spectacularDanie vanNiekerk(BMW) and Mike Venlet in an extremelyquick VW Golf, in classes A and B, who al-ways commanded the attention of theKillar-ney crowd. It is going to be interesting to seehow they shape up this year. Finally, 15-year-old Giordano Lupini, who

is competing in the single seater FormulaLi-

bre events, is easily the youngest main cir-cuit driver in the Cape. The full program of events includes races

for the Bold Marine GTi Challenge, MidasClubmans, Formula Libre, Makita Super-cars, V8 Masters, Crossley and Webb Sports& GT Cars, Cars Unlimited Fine Cars, MikeHopkins Superbikes A, B &C andMike Hop-kins Classic, SB/PS/Clubman motorcycles.

GGOOLLFF:: HAT-TRICK FOR WP IN DISABLED CHALLENGE

Western Province proved yet againthat golf is played on grass, not pa-per, as the four bankers and 17-

year-old rookie Ignation Douries sealed ahat-trick of victories in the South AfricanDisabled Golf Association’s Hollard Provin-cial Challenge, hosted by ReichmansCapi-tal, at Zwartkop Country Club on Sunday.

Over 36 holes of rousing shot-making andspirited competition, Western Province ral-lied to triumph on 11.5 points, defeating de-fending champions Rest of Country (ROC)by two points, while Gauteng finished aclose third on nine points.

There were lots of doubting Thomaseswho didn’t believe that Douries would keeppace with deaf player Ryan Lotz and the ex-perienced leg-amputees Morne Cronje, Ri-aan Spreeth and Trevor Reich.

Douries collected two points for WesternProvince in the first round and surprisedwith unexpected determination and grit atthe closing hole in the final round.

Standing on the 18th tee, Douries was onedown to Virgil Foster from Gauteng and allsquare with Nico Wentzel from ROC after

the former Nedbank SA Disabled Openchampion won the 17th hole.

“It was very, very tight at the end, butDouries handled the pressure like a realpro,” said proud Province skipper PieterVerwey. “We had 10 points in hand, but ROCwas on 9.5 points and Gauteng had 8.5points. Douries had to halve against Fosterand beat Wentzel to win the ProvincialChallenge for us. It was touch and go, butIgnation was like a little terrier that justwouldn’t let go. He lagged his first putt threefeet short of the hole and boxed the secondputt with total confidence to halve againstVirgil and beat Nico in the process.

Douries and Lotz both collected threepoints for Province, Spreeth amassed twopoints and Cronje won the Most ValuablePlayer honour for the champions with 3.5points.

“Reich didn’t contribute any points thisyear, but the team awarded him a gold starfor inspiring everyone else to greatness,”said Verwey. “Of course that means he paysfor all the celebratory drinks and all theFanta Douries wants.”
