“This particular medical-related land use isdeemed appropriate in an area which is ina transition phase and already presents low-intensity mixed uses. This area may be de-fined as a mixed use area,” according to theagenda.Residents’ objections included that only a
limited number of people have been notifiedabout the application; that a business thatwas approved earlier on one of the erven, re-sulted in endless problems with overflowparking on the park; and that the centrewould be targeted by drug dealers, as is thecase with the Kenilworth Centre in thesouthern suburbs. The application was for rezoning of two
adjacent erven from single residential zone1 to general residential zone 2 and consentuse to accommodate the institution. The application by Pierre Smit and Asso-
ciates on behalf of Mistico Trading andGrandstand Investments, was received by
the City of Cape Town on 24 May 2012, butit took until recently for the province to re-move the restrictive title deed condition. The original design was for a double sto-
reybuildingwith 25beds, six therapy rooms,a lounge, a study or library, gymnasium, dining area, kitchen, administrative officesand ancillary facilities. However, theamended design has changed to make provi-sion for a single storey structure only. The facility would cater for amaximum of
25 in-patients. Out-patients will not be ca-tered for. The facility will operate on a vol-untary basis – patients will be submitted ontheir own accord.A licence has already been issued by the
Western Cape department of health, subjectto the rezoning of the property.Commenting on the objection, the appli-
cant said “a tranquil natural environmentwill be created to contribute to the reductionof stress”.
“There will be 13 staff members and fivewhich will be working night shift. Six psy-chiatrists will visit the facility daily.“Themaximumduration of treatmentwill
be 25 days, while the average duration oftreatment will be between 10 to 12 days.“Patientswill be encouraged to leave their
vehicles at home and most will not requireon-site parking. The majority of staff are ex-pected to use public transport, therefore, de-mand for parking will be relatively low,” hesaid. In reaction to the objection against the no-
tice given, the advertising of the applicationadhered to the council’s advertising policy. An extension was granted, giving a periodof 56 days instead of the prescribed 30 days.“The Kenilworth Centre deals with addic-
tions, whereas the proposed facility dealswith depression and eating disorders,” theapplicant said regarding the fear of drugdealers entering the neighbourhood.

Paint City opened its doors on November27, 1989 as the brain child of the late Vincentvan der Spuy. It grew from a family businessto a leader in the home improvement sector. Now, after almost three decades, it is movingto new premises.
Debbie van der Spuy, co-owner with GavinKinnear, says they are moving to a safer envi-ronment for customer’s sake.

“It will be a new and pleasant shopping ex-perience. It is important for us to replicateand even improve the level of service we have

Ourloyal customers will knowwe would not havethis longevity if we were not leaders in ourfield in thenorthern suburbs. We strive topro-vide all clients with an upmarket and friendlyshopping and home improvement experience,by ensuring our staff are knowledgeable andare always willing to go the extra mile,” saysvan der Spy.
While traditional goods like decorativepaints, customised colour matching and tin-ting, plumbing and sanitaryware, as well assmall hardware will be sold, there will also bea range of new services. “

The charge of animal cruelty against well-known snake handler Shaun MacLeod, pre-viously from Door-de-Kraal, was with-drawn in the Bellville Magistrate’s Courtlast Thursday.
A total of 28 snakes were confiscated inMarch from MacLeod, co-ordinator of theWestern Cape snake emergency rescue vol-unteer team and director of Reptile Educa-tion Awareness Consultants (Reac).
The charge came when an ex-assistant,Cassandra Bright, who took care of hissnakes for about three months, phoned theSPCA to report alleged animal cruelty, be-cause of the “filthy conditions” in which thesnakes were allegedly kept at his house inDoor-de-Kraal.
MacLeod had moved 43 snakes to a garagein Bright’s house in Eversdal when hemoved from Door-de-Kraal to Hermanus.
According to MacLeod, about 15 snakesdied or disappeared there. He said when heconfronted her about it and threatened tolay a charge of theft, she phoned the SPCAand “falsely” made allegations of neglect.
The SPCA confiscated the snakes and the
case dragged on for eight months until lastweek being withdrawn on condition Ma-cLeod assure the SPCA the snakes will beproperly cared for and kept in a suitable fa-cility, and that the SPCA may inspect thesnakes and facilities at reasonable notice.
He agreed to this, but did not agree to afurther condition that he may not discloseany information to the media. This wasthen scrapped, he said to TygerBurger.
MacLeod said the snakes will be relocatedto a snake park in Wellington.
The SPCA offered a settlement earlierthis year, and again in August after the onlyperson who had the expertise to look afterthe snakes at the SPCA, Brett Glasby, re-signed in April.
MacLeod said he is waiting for the SPCAto notify him of the health of his snakes, which he has requested several times now.
Megan Reid, wildlife unit supervisor ofthe Cape of Good Hope SPCA, said: “Al-though the SPCA agreed to enter into a me-diation in order to affect a speedy resolu-tion for the sake of the snakes, this does notpreclude us from reinstituting the prosecu-tion should MacLeod not adhere to the con-ditions of the agreement.”
Settlement takes the biteout of lengthy snake trial

AanpassingTheo is vanjaar in graad R by die Snap
Academy ingeskryf.

Leefstyl: Selluliet is meer algemeen by
A bad hair day can ruin your week. Ten su-re ways you’ll end up wanting to walkaround with a beanie in mid-summer are:
1. Brushing your hair while it’s wetWet hair is weaker than dry hair so brus-
hing it while wet causes damage and brea-kage.
2. Setting the heat too highNever put the heat up too high on your
styling tools. Over time too much heat ma-kes your hair dry and brittle. If you havestubborn hair, use a heat protector.
3. Skipping trimsOver time split ends become even bigger,
causing more damage to the hair. It’s bestto go for a trim every month or two.
4. Lethal comboCombining hairspray and your hot iron
can be deadly for your hair. The alcohol inmost hairsprays burns on contact with he-at. Use a thermal protector before hot iro-ning then use hairspray afterwards.
5. Using a lot of productToo much of a good thing is bad. The sa-
me goes for hair products. Your hair hasnatural oils and the more product you use,the more you strip your hair of those natu-ral oils.
6. The dreaded towel turbanWrappinghair in a towel to dry off excess
water is abad idea.Wethair shouldbegent-ly squeezedwitha towel andnotwrungout.Wringing your hair will cause more frizzand breakage.

I again read with interest of thecomplaints about problems withvagrants in Kenridge (Keep thehomeless out of Kenridge,TygerBurger, 12 November) and
cellphone towers going up inWellway Park East (“Residentsfear cell mast health risks”,TygerBurger, 12 November). It’s all very well people
complaining and writinganonymously (it’s their right),but as I have said before, it’sno good closing the stable doorafter the horse as bolted. We need to get the council-
lors of the various wardsinvolved – make them earntheir money. How many peopleout there know who their wardcouncillor is?It’s not a question about
political parties, although theyargue and pass the buck; it’s aquestion of getting the repre-sentative councillor to do his orher job.At least Malema stood up and
spoke his mind – like it or not.How many so-called politiciansout there thought along thesame lines, but were too afraidto say it?

SLICE OF LIFE

In alle gevalle moet medemense natuurlik in ag geneem word, of dit nou naaanleiding van honde of kinders of grootmense is. Groter verdraagsaamheid salook help. - Anti-selfsug
- Beskaafd
Bejaardeswil vrylik rondloop.

Lizette Schulze,Eskom’smarketingservices manager in theWestern Cape, congratulatesMax on hisachievementduring a photosession prior tothe dinner.
Chef’s plan in a pan sizzlesin energysmart cookoffThe prawn and chorizo risotto made by ayoung student chef from Durbanville bow-led judges in Eskom’s “good taste, electrici-ty smart” cooking competition over.
Max Brand (21) won the competition pre-sented in partnership with Pick n Pay and49M.
The competition was at the centre of anenergy efficiency behavioural change cam-paign.
Entrants were invited to join a nationaldrive aimed at establishing environmental-ly savvy cooking as a “lifestyle norm” andto cook any of four electricity-smart dishes.
Max’s winning prawn and chorizo risottoattracted 4 500 votes and would have recei-ved nods of approval in any Michelin-starrestaurant.
Max is a student at the CTI (Chefs Trai-
ning and Innovation) Academy in CapeTown. He dreams of opening his own restau-rant one day and plans to travel to theworld’s culinary hotspots after his studiesin order hone his skills and learn moreabout the secrets of great cooking.
The grand prize was dinner in the compa-ny of celebrity chef Justine Drake, whichMax enjoyed with five of his best friends ata venue in Cape Town last Tuesday.
The winter cooking competition formedpart of Eskom’s ongoing conversation withthe residential sector about the need to useelectricity wisely and sparingly during a ti-me of severe energy constraints in South Af-rica.V Food lovers and homeowners can visit www.electricitysmart.co.za for summer saving recipes fromthe 49M Energy Efficient Cookbook.
The Spectra Foundation, which started in2005, has been very busy so far this year.
The organisation helps impoverishedpeople and the demand has grown everyyear, and has certainly worsened this ye-ar, said Val Young, director of SpectraFoundation.
“We have for the past number of yearsbeen reliant on caring members of the pu-blic to empty their cupboards of unwantedgoods especially around winter andChristmas time to allow those in need tosmile once in a while – particularly thoseexposed to the elements every night orwhose homes have burnt to the ground re-sulting in them losing everything,” shesaid.
Amongst those they try to assist are peo-ple infected/affected by HIV/Aids, as wellas families where there is drug and alco-hol abuse, especially where there arechildren involved.
“We have six different ongoing projects,as well as individual families we are hel-ping to survive,” she said.
The Spectra Foundation appeals to thecommunity not to throw out their unwan-ted clothes, linen, shoes, bric-a-brac, food, small electrical appliances not in use oranything else, which can still be used, butto give them a call to collect.
V For enquiries or collection, contact Val on084 033 6741 or 021 979 2408,

Ten years ago an Italian couple,Michela andAttilio Dalpiaz, started their new life as wi-nemakers in South Africa. Last week theymade history by planting the first Vermenti-no on their farm Ayama. It was a celebration in true Italian style,
with delicious food, Ayama’s own wine, andthe guests participating in the planting cere-mony.“It started as a dream, as a joke between
friends, and nowwe can tell some sort ofma-gic story, a fairy tale in which there weremany deurmekaar days, but nothing that agood glass of wine and looking at a sunsetover Table Mountain, can’t sort out,” saidMichela.Michela and Attilio had to wait six years
for the six imported buds to be propagatedand cleared by the SouthAfrican authorities
before they could plant the new vines.“Wedecidedona clone fromSardinia after
deliberation with one of Italy’s best-knownviticulturists, Augusto Fabbro,” saidMiche-la, who also makes the wine on the farm.“Vermentino is aperfectmatch for our ter-
roir. The berries and bunches are large andthe grapes are late ripening, which fits per-fectlywith the existing varietals on the farmand theharvesting schedule. I alsoknowandlove the varietal as it produces aromatic, white wines which can handle wood and gi-ves you a beautifully powerful wine.”JohanWiese ofVoorGroenbergNurseries
near Wellington, who was responsible forpropagationl, said it was “good to broadenour cultivar choices”V Ayama is situated in the Voor Perdeberg regionand is a mere 30 minutes’ drive from Durbanville.

Hy lei ’n eenvoudige lewe: “Krismis gaanek altyd na my ma toe in Beaufort-Wes ennuwejaar probeer ek by die see wees.”
Dat sy optrede vanaand (19 November) enmôreaand by Die Boer iets spesiaals salwees, is verseker.

Engineering the blues forthe price of a desert brewLOUISA STEYL
@lounotes
As they sing in “Desert Rose”, CrimsonHou-sehasbeen“Hereand thereandbackagain”.Well, two of the Cape Town band’s mem-
bers have anyway. SaxophonistNickBeckerand frontman Riaan Smit recently returnedfrom a whirlwind American adventure. The duo went overseas to build connecti-
ons, experience the music industries and“see if the grass is really greener”.“There’s just a lot more grass, I think,” Ri-
aan says. They busked wherever they could and
tried to take in the lifestyle inNewYork, SanDiego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and NewOrleans, amongst other places.
Price of a beerA highlight for Nick and Riaan was wor-
kingwithAlanSanderson, aGrammyawardwinning producer and engineer known forhis work with the likes of B.B King and TheRolling Stones, and all it cost themwas a Ta-fel Lager.“He really loves Namibia and beer and re-
allywanted tomeet us,” explainsRiaan, whois a Namibian.Despite only having 14 shows lined up
when theywent over, the two ended up play-ing more than 50 across the states.Riaan saysmusicians inAmerica earn the
sameas SouthAfricans, there’s simplymoreplaces they can play, and some even earn adecent living from busking, which adds vi-brancy and culture to cities overseas.“Busking isn’t considered begging, it’s a
profession,” Nick adds.Riaan says the biggest lesson he learnt in
America is that the talent in South Africais on the same level, if not better. “We’re stillgrowing,” he says and points out that SouthAfrica still needs to create a creative com-
munity to help grow local industries. “Weneed to water our own grass.”Crimson House will open the tap when
they perform with a host of South Africanblues acts at theTable Mountain Blues Sum-mit at Hillcrest Quarry on Saturday 6 andSunday 7 December.
Spirituality and inclusionRiaan says it’s the spirituality and inclusi-
on of blues that drawshim to the genre. “Youdon’t need to be good to do it; you just needto be real”.“The foundations of the blues have been
laid down for the last 100 years,” Nick saysand says it’s a common denominator forma-ny musicians, but still something they canmake their own.“I’ve had instances where I open my eyes
on stage after a song and I couldn’t believewhere I’m standing, because I completelywent into another world, and that for me isspecial.”Because of its rich history, Riaan says
blues is a difficult genre to pin point. Usingthe Blues Summit as an example, he sayseveryone has a different interpretation andstyle of playing.“Each performance is different,” Nick
adds, pointing out that a song’s interpretati-on depends on the environment and themood of the artists and audience.V Visit www.bluesfest.co.za for more informationabout the Blues Summit.V Nick and Riaan visited the Orange Couch to chatabout the band’ s plans and give readers a taste oftheir performance at the Table Mountain Blues Summit. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their interview and performance.

WPKRIEKET: MILNERTON EN NOORDELIKESGOODWOOD GOED GEPLAAS VIR SEGES
Durbies val vas teen UKSAREL BURGER

The 22nd Coronation Double Century is ateamcycling event taking place in Swellen-dam this Saturday (22 November). The an-nual race attracts teams from across thecountry who tackle the challenging 202kmroute, and this year a number of teamsfrom Brackenfell, Durbanville and Bellvil-lewill join the other 200-odd teams for a testof skill and endurance.Team Action Frames comprises riders
from the Brackenfell, Kuils River and Pro-tea Heights areas and they are aiming tocomplete the ride as a team in anambitioustime of 6.5 hours. Their captain, Dirk Oli-ver, says the team is very well preparedand are looking forward to putting theirmonths of training to the test.TeamDIKDaisies andDUNDaisies from
the Bellville and Durbanville have alsobeen training for the Coronation DoubleCentury challenge. While they’re not aiming to compete for
the title, these two local teams have yearsof experience, with many of them cyclingfor about eight years.Their team captains Jack Meyer and
Christoff Fourie have ridden a fewCorona-tion Double Centuries before and are loo-king forward to riding through the Over-berg.The Dirty Dozen Engen team are older

roughly nine hours and to put their trainingon the Durbanville Hills to test. Team cap-tain Nico Rossouw from Durbanville says
his team are looking forward to completingthe tough race – all on mountain bikes forthe first time this year
