Welcome to our 2016 on farm sale at Tikana.

The place of Wapiti genetics in the deer industry to produce venison is well established. It is great to see the endorsement of this with the results of the DPT project. While it highlights a big potential for improvement within our breed it also indicates that not all Wapiti are equal.

Deer farmers using Wapiti terminals for venison production should be cautious. You cannot expect to reap the benefits of using Wapiti if the “Wapiti” you buy is in fact a hybrid. Wapiti with around 50% elk genes when mated to red hinds will produce for you hybrid fawns with just 25% elk genes!! This is a recipe for disappointing results.

For the first time this year we have published values for the traits for which we have an eBV (estimated breed value). The eBV values in our catalogue are within our herd only. At present DEERSelect eBVs cannot be compared across herd for Wapiti or across breed with Red deer eBVs

The genetic trends for the Tikana herd in growth, velvet, carcass yield and composition continue to move up. The velvet improvement is very evident in this year’s offering with over 60% of the bulls cutting EWSupreme. Five years ago less than 20% of the bulls offered cut EWSupreme. On top of this we are only starting to see the influence of Nepia in the younger stock. At just 6 years and cutting 22.6kg of EWSupreme he was crowned Champion in the Allcomers class at the 2015 National Velvet Competition. In an unprecedented event the Reserve Champion was also a Wapiti. Our congratulations to Raincliff Station, whose bull Tartan grew a very impressive 17.1 kg EWSupreme at just 4 years old. Tartan was purchased at our sale last year.

This year for the first time we are offering Mixed Age Wapiti cows for sale subject to a positive pregnancy scan in May. Theses quality cows are all rearing fawns and will all be mated to Nepia.

Genetics – use them to your best advantage.

The breeding objectives of your herd need to align with the breeder you buy your genetics from. The progress we are making in those traits that are relevant to you should be your focus.

We know there are dangers in too much focus on one trait alone. In the pork industry a selection focus for high growth came at the expense of meat quality. In the dairy industry a selection focus for high milk production came at the expense fertility.

Selecting for one trait allows for rapid progress in that trait and conversely progress is slowed when a number of traits are being selected for. At Tikana we believe we have a good balance of traits we select for.

The Tikana herd has been fully recorded on DEERSelect since 2005 and we have been selecting based on eBV’s (estimated Breeding Values) generated since 2010. An eBV is the genetic merit of an individual for a given trait once all environmental factors are removed. eBVs put a figure on the genetic worth of an animal for a given trait and indicate the amount that the progeny of that animal will gain or lose for that trait. They are an invaluable tool for selection. Please note the eBV values in our catalogue are within our herd only. They cannot be compared to values from other Wapiti or Red deer herds. One of the objectives of the DPT was to be able to have all deer on “the same page”. Work currently being done by DEERSelect should see this become a reality in 12 months. Over-riding any selection based on eBVs at Tikana, is eye appraisal for conformation and zero tolerance for undesirable temperament.

A genetic trend is the improvement over time for a given trait and is a measure of the progress a breeder is making. Usually a genetic trend is produced for the average value of the progeny for that trait. We decided to look at our breeding females to determine progress. We believe our Wapiti cows are the power engine of genetics at Tikana.

Since 2005 until 2016 the average growth (WT12) eBV of our Wapiti cows has increased 15 fold

Since 2005 until 2016 the average velvet (MVW) eBV of our Wapiti cows has increased 40 fold

Since 2005 until 2014 the average eye muscle area (EMA) ceBV of our Wapiti cows has increased 5 fold. (Note we have only been scanning for EMA for 7 years and so have only been able to select for the last 5 years)

We have also been saliva sampling each crop of fawns for the last 5 years. This CARLA test measures the protective immunoglobulin produced in saliva in response to parasite challenge. Thanks to analysis of CARLA on the DPT fawns we now know it has a heritability of 0.31.This exciting finding means it is a reality that in future we will offer deer with an eBV for parasite tolerance.

The sale will be conducted by PGG Wrightson with the conditions of sale as set down by the New Zealand Stock and Stations Agents Association, a copy of which is exhibited in the office on sale day.2. Nepia has a high ceBV for EMA (eye muscle area) at +2.60.

This is the highest sire used at Tikana for EMA. When we originally scanned for EMA we assumed that based on the sheep industry, it would give an indication of the proportion of the carcass in the higher value cuts, particularly loin. The DPT has not only confirmed that ceBV EMA is a heritable trait in deer that correlates to a higher value carcass composition but that it is also highly correlated to a higher meat to bone ratio and tenderness of venison.

• All cows are rearing a calf this season.

• These Wapiti cows will be mated to Nepia.

• Cows will be pregnancy scanned in May.

• Purchaser will be liable for 25% of auction day bid at fall of hammer.

• Balance due following notification of positive scan result.

• Possession taken in June.

• The 25% deposit will be refunded if Negative pregnancy scan.
