belonging across Cabrillo’s campuses and throughout each

student’s educational journey.

Making Online Materials Accessible for ADA Compliance All content posted in your Canvas course must be accessible to

students with disabilities. Faculty and staff are invited to come

learn how to avoid, identify, and correct common accessibility

problems with your online materials, including text, links,

images, videos, and PDFs. Implementing these fundamental

universal design principles will ensure that all students can

successfully access your content (plus it’s a legal mandate!).

Building Equity in the Classroom Come prepared to discuss and share ideas around building

Adjunct Faculty Orientation This workshop is designed for adjunct faculty who are

newcomers to Cabrillo. It is an introduction to the college and

its processes and procedures including how to handle a wait list

and add codes, what to do about disruptive students,

accommodations for students with a learning disability,

learning resources available to students, and how you are

expected to use WebAdvisor/Self-Service. Nuts-and-bolts

information on absence forms, evaluations, Student Learning

Outcomes, office hours, text orders, updating your staff listing

in the online directory, requesting an email and phone

extension, finals week schedules, and evening support and

9-1-1 calls will also be addressed.

Sabbatical Leave: How to Write a Proposal This is a mandatory workshop if you are planning to submit a

sabbatical proposal for 2020/21. Members of the Sabbatical

Leave Review Board (SLRB) will be on hand to guide you

through the ins and outs of writing a successful sabbatical

proposal. This workshop will also cover writing your sabbatical

report. Returnees from sabbatical during 2018/19 are strongly

urged to attend.

Open House at the Library Join us for coffee and morning snacks at the Cabrillo Library’s

Open House! Stop in at any time to familiarize yourself with

this inclusive space on campus where your students can access

a variety of free resources. Preview databases, textbooks, open

education resources (OER), course research guides, and more.

This is an excellent time to meet faculty Librarians and schedule

a research session or request a Canvas module designed to

meet your course needs in Aptos and Watsonville. Browse the

library collections and recommend materials relevant to your

programs. Talk to our circulation staff about putting books and

DVDs on reserve for short-term checkout. Make a

recommendation for a library student assistant and/or pick-up

an application to forward their way! Working together, we can

provide excellent academic support and free resources for our

students throughout the semester.

Excellence in Personal and Professional Mindset: Growing in our Roles at Cabrillo Many faculty and staff at Cabrillo excel at fostering a growth

mindset in our students. Now is the chance to apply this same

way of thinking to ourselves. This workshop will provide a brief

refresher of mindset concepts and the research linking them to

student engagement and success. Participants will then flip the

mirror to look at their own needs as learners. What kind of

activities will deepen your success and engagement at the

college? Join us to identify the best opportunities to facilitate

Who's in my Classroom? Tools to Teach to a Neurodiverse Population This interactive workshop provides guidance for working with

students who learn differently than many instructors were

trained to teach. Universal design methods and classroom

management techniques are always handy for your toolbox.

Bloodborne Pathogen Training The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

issued a standard (Section 5193 of Title 8 of California Code of

Regulations) that provides various methods to reduce your risk

of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The standard covers

employees who can reasonably anticipate contact with blood

or other potentially infectious materials as a result of

performing their assigned job duties. Training is required

initially upon hire and annually thereafter. This training is

introductory in nature and designed to provide a basic

understanding of bloodborne pathogens, workplace

transmissions, exposure to control plan, standard precautions,

reducing risk, etc.

Select one of two session times offered: Wednesday, August

21, 2019 from 9 - 10 a.m. or 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. in Building 1500,

room 1520.

Excellence in Interaction & Engagement: Culturally Responsive Teaching & Service We all interact with students in some way, and many of us

recognize the importance of being culturally responsive in

these interactions—both in and out of the classroom. This

workshop will highlight how faculty and staff across the College

are currently incorporating culturally responsive methods in

their work with students. Workshop attendees will learn

strategies and techniques they can apply right away in their job

at Cabrillo. This session will focus on empathy and how to bring

empathy to our interactions with students and each other.

SLO Assessment in eLumen for Individual Faculty All SLO assessments should now be completed in eLumen.

Learn how to navigate through this tool to document your SLO

assessments. Working in a computer lab, participants will get

hands-on experience logging in to eLumen, locating SLOs, and

creating and completing Individual Faculty Assessments

Analysis forms. Remember, SLO assessment is the reflective

process that helps us strive towards excellence as instructors

and as a college. This process is used to determine how well WE

(our college, programs, courses, teaching methods, policies,

procedures, etc.) are supporting student mastery of the

expected knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes.

SLO Assessment in eLumen for Department Chairs Department Chairs play a crucial role in the SLO assessment

process. Departmental SLO assessment discussions form the

basis for improving courses and programs. These discussions

result in departmental goals and resources requests. This

workshop will teach department chairs how to complete a

Departmental Assessment Analysis form in eLumen. Working in

a computer lab, participants will get hands-on experience

creating and completing a departmental assessment.

Classroom Management and Threat Assessment Come meet your Student Support & Care Team (SSCT). We will

provide clear classroom management guidance and skills when

it comes to intervening with a challenging or concerning

student. We will share our risk review process for safety and

threat assessment completed for every submitted student

report. We will share examples of the work we do to

differentiate safety and threat assessment from psychological

assessment for our most concerning student encounters.

Seahawks Take Flight Join fellow faculty, staff, and administrators in welcoming our

new students. Seahawks Take Flight is a unique student

experience held in and outside the gym. It’s our own tailgate

party where students learn about college resources, learn

about majors and programs, and meet the faculty and staff

who are here to help them take flight. There will be food,

music, a resource fair, and classroom tours. Being there and

interacting with students is the primary goal of this event,

whether you come for a part of it, or choose to "help." It's a

terrific way to celebrate students beginning their journey!

Canvas and Equity-Minded Course Design The most important resource we have on our path towards

equity-minded teaching is our students. Student Tech Peer

Coaches, Title V, and TLC staff will share solutions students say

they need to succeed. We will look at Peralta College’s Equity

Rubric which informs Canvas design, and highlight equity issues

associated with learning—including access via a mobile device,

syllabus design, and communication strategies. This session

does not require prior experience with Canvas.
