By very nature of the trucking business, it

can be hard to avoid acci-dents altogether. Kudos to those drivers who manage to get through their careers with impressive safety re-cords, but it isn’t always as easy as they may make it look.

You may be the best driver in the world, but the fact is, you have to drive on public roads every day and there are a lot of drivers out there who aren’t as careful as you may be.

Even a simple fender bender can turn making a living in the trucking busi-ness into a nightmare. A secure job can turn into the unemployment line if your employer deems it a safety violation that hurts their company’s reputation or their insurance rates.

Preventable accidents are the ones that will haunt you when it comes to your career, so they are the ones

you need to avoid. Ac-cidents are differentiated between preventable and non-preventable in order to fairly judge a driver’s and company’s safety record, and are often used to de-termine bonuses and other incentives.

One or more prevent-able accidents on your re-cord or in your employee file may prevent you from landing your dream job, or even lead to your dismissal from your current one. Should you have a prevent-able accident, however, it does not necessarily have to mean the end of your career.

Ben Klassen was fired from his job after what was deemed a ‘preventable incident’. “I was in a cus-tomer’s yard where I had to back around a corner to the dock. The yard guy was waving me back, guid-ing me in. For some reason he forgot about the street

light back there and I ran it over.”

Because Ben did not get out and look at the layout for himself multiple times as he was backing up, the company labeled it ‘pre-ventable’ and it cost him the job he’d been at for five years. The repair bill, covered by insurance, was over $3,000. It took Ben eight months to convince another, much smaller car-rier to hire him.

If you are fired from a company due to an acci-dent or other safety viola-tion, you may have to re-think the type of trucking you do. Working locally — hauling dirt, rocks or gravel — may be one of your best options. It keeps you behind the wheel and gives you a chance to start rebuilding your safety re-cord.

The jobs available to a driver with a poor safety record will likely not pay

as well as well as you may be used to. But if you are lucky you may find a small company with a handful of trucks who is willing to give you a chance.

Speak to your insur-ance company. There may be something you can do to help reduce your rates and improve your record. Taking defensive driving courses and other remedial training may show poten-tial employers that you are serious about getting back on track.

A serious accident in-volving injury or death may not be as easy to re-cover from. In 1989, Carl

Vanderhoof was in a seri-ous accident. Although he was not deemed at fault in the crash, it nonetheless ended his driving career.

“I still have the odd nightmare about it, almost a decade and a half later. I just can’t get it out of my head,” says Carl. The ac-cident happened on a little traveled secondary high-way near Grande Prairie, Alberta. A sedan carrying a mother and a child lost control on black ice and careened into the path of Carl’s long-nose Peterbilt.

“There was no where to go, and no time to re-act. I wasn’t travelling fast because the highway was slick.” Both the mother and child were killed in the crash. Carl was left un-harmed, protected by the weight and size of his semi.

“I’ll never forget the look on that woman’s face. I could see it clearly just be-fore the impact,” said Carl.

“And that’s why I’ll never drive a truck again. I never want to see that look ever again, and not driving is the only way I can guaran-tee that.”

If asked for one piece of advice that Carl would give to anyone else unfortunate enough to be in a similar situation, he says. “Talk to someone. Get it out. I didn’t go to counselling until three years after the accident. I wish I had gone sooner; maybe I’d still have my career.”

Whether it’s speed, fail-ing to yield, inattentive-ness, distraction, lack of communication or some-thing else, there are dozens of reasons that you can be found at fault in an ac-cident. As a professional driver it is up to you to re-main alert and prepared for all circumstances you may find yourself in. Stay safe and aware whenever you are on the road. b

Delphi Automotive (NYSE: DLPH), a leading global automotive supplier, and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reli-ability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxem-bourg have signed a four-year agreement to coop-erate on a joint research program involving elec-tronic control systems for automotive applications. This is the first cooperation between Delphi and the SnT. The program, entitled ‘Cost-Effective Automated Testing of ECU-Software,’ initially includes two re-search projects. One is on

embedded software test-ing (model-based testing of Electronic Control Modules software) and the second focuses on embedded soft-ware safety (early verifica-tion of performance and timing properties of auto-motive software systems).

“We are pleased to part-ner with the University of Luxembourg in these re-search projects that will enable us to improve the reliability of vehicles in the future,” said Steve Kiefer, president, Delphi Pow-ertrain Systems. “The goal of this joint program is to speed up development of

more reliable ECU software systems for the automotive industry” he added.

“Electronic Control Units (ECUs) are among the most complex embed-ded systems being devel-oped. Ensuring the safety and proper performance of ECUs is a major scientific and engineering endeavor. Delphi is a high-tech, glob-al company that develops highly dependable systems and I look forward to many years of collaboration and technical advances,” said Prof. Lionel Briand, pro-gram director, SnT.

Project intended to de-velop effective and efficient automated verification and validation technologies for ECU software systems.

Modern vehicles are in-creasingly characterized by electronic control systems. The amount and the com-plexity of software used in the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) of today’s vehicles is rapidly increasing. As an example, today’s pre-mium cars feature not less than 70 ECUs connected by more than five different bus systems. Driving forces of this growth are the new legislations on exhaust gas emission, the demand for reduced fuel consumption and faster time-to-market, and the rising customer expectations regarding comfort, dependability, and variety. To overcome some of these challenges, the automobile and ECU manufacturers have to rely on cost-effective tech-niques for verification and validation of their software systems. The research pro-gram led by Delphi and the SnT is intended to develop an effective and efficient automated verification and validation technologies for ECU software systems.

With the signing of this agreement, Delphi be-comes the 15th member to join the SnT Partnership Program. This program enables SnT and its cor-porate partners to develop research collaborations and new technologies. Research is conducted jointly in part-nered projects where SnT and partners contribute know-how and resources to achieve common goals. Partners contribute to SnT at all levels: from a repre-sentation on the governing board, to operational sup-port through the industrial advisory board, as well as by contributing resources to projects. b

Last article I wrote about the tax savings gleaned

from the per deum system, an estimated $8-10k per year. However, the super savings have significant drawbacks. I’ll try and overview the seven disad-vantages in 800 words or less.Setup and maintenance cost

There are incorpora-tion costs, annual renewal fees plus 2-2½ times more work for an accountant (therefore higher account-

ing fees). Many Operators cut their setup costs by incorporating via the in-ternet and maintaining it themselves, but it’s still a cost not born by the self-employed. Additionally, there may be tax implica-tions of selling your truck into the corporation (fixed by a section 85 rollover…talk to your accountant for particulars).Source Deductions are moneys in Trust

30-40% of Operators are still paying last year’s

taxes. Payments may not be popular with CRA but they do regularly allow it. However, when an op-erator uses the per deum system, taxes are remitted at source before the opera-tor even receives anything (not the usual operator way of managing personal cash flow). This can be one of the most intimidating as-pects of the system (chang-ing your cash flow meth-ods). The bottom line is, you have the same access to cash except it is trans-

Spec’ing Your Taxes — with Robert D. Scheper

The Disadvantages Of Tax Savings

ferred in various steps (ac-tually MORE cash because of the tax savings). It takes anywhere from two to six months before the average person is comfortable with the changes.Bank Financing

Using the per deum sys-tem will cause an average of $25k drop in T1 taxable income which means a probable large drop in bor-rowing power. Results may vary, depending on the lender of choice and how aggressive a borrower the operator may be.CPP under contributed

According to national averages, CPP contribu-tions will drop by some-thing like 40%. For some this is an advantage but for others it’s a disadvantage (depending on what you believe about CPP). I’ve had some very interesting conversations with some drivers who are convinced that CPP is nothing more than a tax. They believe that by the time they re-tire there will be nothing. Their opinion is not shared by me. I think there will be something… but I may not be able to collect it until I’m 75. But regardless of

personal opinions it’s an impact that should be dis-cussed. Some (if they are really concerned) volun-tarily send in the “top up” to Revenue Canada.Disability issues

A huge drop in income on line 150 of your T1 causes a huge drop in dis-ability benefits if the un-fortunate situation arises (without the appropriate coverage). Apparently (as I’ve been told) 95% of all disability policies are based on line 150 of your return. We strongly recommend all participants ensure us-ing the 5% (make sure your provider knows the system).Complex

The system is compli-cated. The income tax act is written by lawyers and accountants who designed it so those citizens who could afford the tax sav-ings would be dependent on them. In my humble estimation only about 40% of operators will ever fully use the system due to its complexity, disadvan-tages, disinformation and unpopularity among some accountants. Training is absolutely essential for suc-cess. If you’re not satisfied with the level of training… either demand it or find someone who will meet the need.Possible CRA reassessment liability

In my opinion reas-sessment liability is the most critical factor in the per deum system. Opera-tors regularly ask their ac-countants/bookkeepers about “defending against CRA” or “standing behind you”, concepts that usually means one thing to one

party and another thing to the other. The bottom line is, when it comes to defending the per deum non-taxable benefit… who pays for the possible court costs? This simple question separates the “Dablers” from the committed service providers. Choose care-fully, the best bet is finding someone who specializes in it, maybe even exclu-sively in it. The accoun-tant must have a vested long term interest in the success of the system (not just success of their firm). The per deum requires a much closer relationship between the operator and accountant and the liability becomes much more of a joint venture than a profes-sional burden (a statement of great debate in some circles). Not many accoun-tants wish to accept addi-tional work AND potential long term liability.

If you are more curious about this topic (which is loaded with controversy and disinformation) feel free to visit our web sight and download a free Seminar (2½ hours). It’s PACKED with loads of information and even a couple appropri-ate interviews. b

Thirty of the world’s strongest men challenged 19,000 pounds of pure Mack power during the recent MET-Rx World’s Strongest Man 2012 competition. Pull-ing a MACK Pinnacle Axle Back model tractor was one of the qualifying events dur-ing the 35th annual com-petition conducted at the Commerce Casino and other locations throughout Los Angeles, Calif.

The World’s Strongest Man competition, which aired on ESPN on Dec. 30, pitted men from 17 countries against each other, testing the limits of human strength and endurance through a se-

ries of extreme events.Competitors in the truck

pull qualifier wore a har-ness connected to a rope and were required to pull the Pinnacle tractor more than 30 meters (32.8 yards) in the shortest amount of time. Hafpór Björnsson, of Iceland, won the qualifying round for the second year in a row, finishing in 26.93 seconds. Terry Hollands and Zydrunas Savikas finished the competition second and third place, respectively. All advanced to the next phase of the competition.

“The Mack Pinnacle is an intimidating opponent even for the strongest men

in the world,” said Tracey Craik, fleet sales manager for TEC Equipment, Inc. in La Mirada, Calif. “When the event organizers ap-proached us for a truck to use in the contest, our first recommendation was the Mack Pinnacle model because of the truck’s big power, strength and du-rability – all the right ele-ments to test the World’s Strongest Man.”

The Pinnacle model is designed for durable over-the-road hauling with a MACK Advantage chas-sis to optimize payload. Equipped with the MACK MP8 engine offering 1,760

lb-ft of torque and 505 hp, the fuel-efficient Pinnacle delivers near-zero emis-sions through the combi-nation of the MP8 engine and MACK ClearTech SCR technology.

“The Mack Pinnacle is a very versatile model and can be spec’d to efficiently handle any application, from local and regional hauls, to demanding long hauls,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of mar-keting. “While one very strong man can pull this truck 100 feet in under a minute, the Pinnacle’s 505 horses pull a full load over the steepest mountains ef-fortlessly. Mack Pinnacles have a lot in common with the men who participate in this competition because they are built to handle maximum payload with-out stopping or slowing down.” b

MACK Pinnacle Challenges World’s Strongest Men

On Dec. 13, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) intro-duced a bill to require the Treasury Department to study the impact of imple-menting a vehicle-miles-travelled (VMT) fee to re-place the federal gas tax.

H.R. 6662 mandates the department evaluate

the protection of personal privacy, the ease of com-pliance, the receptiveness of the general public, and the cost of implementation and collection of a mileage based fee. The program would also make grants to universities and manufac-turers to develop technol-

ogy to measure mileage and transfer payments to the government.

Incoming House Trans-portation & Infrastruc-ture Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) has stressed that all options are on the table to find new revenue streams for our nation’s crumbling surface infrastructure, including a VMT system.

Blumenauer’s bill will not see action in the clos-ing days of the 112th Con-gress. b

By Mark WolfeThe construction indus-

try is expected to receive a major economic boost in the coming years as a result of last summer’s governmental approval for the creation of a new bridge, border plazas, and access routes connecting the border between Wind-sor and Detroit. Known as the Detroit River Interna-tional Crossing (DRIC), the

new bridge will be located approximately three kilo-metres west of the Ambas-sador Bridge. In addition to the DRIC project, the Herb Gray Parkway (for-merly the Windsor-Essex Parkway) is currently un-der construction, and will connect Highway 401 to the new bridge. The entire project will cost $3.5 to $4 billion to complete. The new border crossing is ex-

pected to create 10,000 to 15,000 construction jobs in both Ontario and Michi-gan. Not only is this good news for the thousands of contractors, heavy equip-ment operators, and other industry professionals who will be hired to work on the project, it will also de-liver major benefits to the trucking industry by creat-ing a quicker and smoother artery for trade in and out

of Canada. But the build-ing of the bridge will not be without its challenges. “From the construct-build perspective, this is a chal-lenging project because we are not allowed, through the process of the envi-ronmental assessment, to put piers into the water,” says Mark Butler, spokes-person, Transport Canada, Windsor Gateway Project. As a result, construction professionals will need to find appropriate locations for the piers on land, plus an area that will be narrow enough to locate a span with the piers far enough apart. “The actual bridge itself will be built through a public-private partner-ship. The private sector concessionaire … would then go out and contract firms, and logically they

are going to be looking at local firms and local work-ers,” Butler says. “It’s go-ing to be good for Wind-sor-Essex, Ontario, and Canada. They are going to be sourcing workers and products from both sides of the border.” Once all per-mits are approved, indus-try standards indicate that it will take approximately two years to finalize the bridge design through the RFQ/RFP process. Subse-quently, it is estimated that construction will take four to five years to complete. However, construction of the Herb Gray Parkway has been progressing steadily since 2011. As of Decem-ber 2012, approximately 4,100 project staff and subcontractor personnel from over 350 companies, agencies and organizations

completed the mandatory training required to work on the parkway, with 98 per cent of subcontracts and 90 per cent of major purchase orders awarded to local or partially lo-cal companies. Ongoing parkway projects include road construction, tunnel and bridge construction (including the pile driving necessary for support), util-ity and sewer relocation, drainage, and excavation to create the below-grade extension of Highway 401. Upon completion by the summer of 2015, the 11-ki-lometre parkway will ease the movement of goods and people to and from the Windsor/Detroit border, separate local and interna-tional traffic, and eliminate stop-and-go traffic in resi-dential areas. b

Southern Alberta’s trans-portation and construction industries finally have a trade show they can call their own. The Truck, Trans-portation and Equipment Showcase (TTE Show) will launch Thursday September 19 and Friday September 20, 2013 and will feature over 100 exhibitors and spon-sors. Some 2,000 contrac-tors from greater Calgary and southern Alberta are expected to attend the exhi-bition at the centrally locat-ed and historic Strathmore Stampede Grounds.

Everything is going to be held under the big blue sky of this multi-acre, outdoor venue less than 25 minutes east of Calgary. For exhibitors featuring hand tools and other services, the TTE will feature several tents for 10’x10’s as well as smaller spots for non-profit associations and special interest groups. For bulk exhibits (larger than 400 square feet) that will feature the lat-est “iron” a variety of configurations from 20’x20’ to 40’x100’ will be on offer. A promi-nent feature of the an-nual TTE Show will be three active demo areas. Contractors and buyers will be able to operate and evaluate a vast vari-ety of equipment - from trucks to grinders and rough terrain lift trucks to laser-quided scrap-ers – all available under

actual jobsite conditions and unique to this out-door event.

In addition to the ex-hibition and demos, the TTE show will host sev-eral industry seminars on topics such as small business marketing, en-ergizing your team and estimating workshops. Sponsorship opportunities will be available for both the seminars and the ex-hibition itself.

Because of its location, all site parking will be free and show management will be able to choose sup-pliers who offer the best value to exhibitors.

“We’ve heard from a number of manufactur-ers, distributors and deal-ers that a trade-only event for truck, transportation and equipment owner/operators would be of tre-mendous value to both southern Alberta buyers and sellers,” said Show Manager Bruce Guerin of Big Feats Management & Logistics. “Unlike static indoor events where you just admire the “shine”, we plan to offer up op-portunities to operate and evaluate a massive variety of trucks, equipment and machinery”. We expect keen interest from the likes of owner/fleet and general freight operators, landscapers, hobby farm-ers, developers, builders and others in the industry,” Guerin added. b

The Truck Transportation And Equipment Showcase Is Coming To Southern Alberta

At the recent American Trucking Associations’ Summit on Natural Gas in Trucking, Freightliner Trucks announced that it is now offering a custom-er demonstrator program for its all new Freightliner Cascadia 113 natural gas day cab. Five customer demonstrator tractors will be available in the United States and Canada to pro-vide customers direct ex-perience with Freightliner’s newest alternative fuel product.

Equipped with the new Cummins Westport ISX12 G heavy-duty natural gas engine, the Allison 4000HS transmission, and 115 die-sel gallon equivalent com-pressed natural gas (CNG) fuel tanks, the Cascadia 113 natural gas tractor is ideal for regional haul and less-than-truckload appli-cations.

The 12-liter ISX12 G natural gas engine is based on the Cummins ISX12 diesel heavy duty engine platform and will operate on either CNG or liquefied natural gas (LNG). It fea-tures ratings of 400 hp and 1,450 lb-ft torque, optional engine brake, and manual and automatic transmis-sion capability.

“Natural gas products can result in significant fuel cost savings, making it a smart choice for increasing profitability while benefit-ting the environment,” said TJ Reed, director, product

strategy for Freightliner Trucks. “By providing our customers with the oppor-tunity to test drive a Casca-dia 113 natural gas, they’ll experience first-hand the performance and efficiency of an alternative fuel solu-tion.”

The tractor is just one of Freightliner Trucks’ natu-ral gas-powered vehicles, which also includes the Freightliner Business Class M2 112 and the 114SD. Parent company Daim-ler Trucks North America (DTNA) leads the medium and heavy commercial ve-hicle market in the produc-tion of natural gas powered conventional vehicles with a combined sales figure of more than 4,600 natu-ral gas vehicles across its brands. Of those, Freight-liner Trucks has sold more than 1,800 trucks and trac-tors since 2008.

DTNA’s commitment to green technologies is part of parent company Daim-ler AG’s global “Shaping Future Transportation” ini-tiative. Launched in 2007, the initiative is focused on reducing criteria pollut-ants, carbon dioxide and fuel consumption through the utilization of clean, ef-ficient drive systems and alternative fuels.

Full production on the Cascadia 113 natural gas begins in Q3 2013. To learn more about this demonstra-tor program, go to www.FreightlinerTrucks.com. b

The Ontario Trucking Association is giving the Ministry of Transportation the thumbs up for apply-ing the "Adverse Driving Conditions" provision of the Hours of Service Regu-lations to drivers impacted the by Idle No More events that took place across the province on January 16.

Below is information specific to the directive sent out to MTO officers across the province late last evening to accommodate any drivers and carriers impacted by these events:

This is to inform you that several “Idle No More” protests have resulted in Highway blockades across Ontario. These blockades have resulted in unfore-seen delays for commercial motor vehicle traffic, some lasting up to several hours.

Drivers of commercial motor vehicles who have been delayed in these blockades may utilize the increased driving times provided for in Section 15 of O/Reg 555/06 – Adverse Driving Conditions.

Officers are reminded that these provisions pro-vide for: Up to 2 additional hours of driving/on-duty time in the 13/14 hour day rules; Up to 2 additional hours of driving/on-duty time in the 13/14 hour workshift rules, provided the driver does not exceed the 16 hours elapsed time requirements; Up to 2 ad-ditional hours of driving/

on-duty time in both the 7 day - 70 hour cycle and the 14 day – 120 hour cycle.

MTO has also requested OTA remind drivers and car-riers who were required to use the adverse driving con-ditions provision that they document it in the remarks section of their daily log as required by the regulation. This notation will serve as a reminder to officers who may check hours of service compliance in the days or months to come.

“MTO should be com-mended for their quick understanding of the situation facing trucking operations in many parts of the province yesterday and their willingness to work with the industry during this challenging time, while maintaining all compliance with the hours of service regula-tions,” said OTA presi-dent David Bradley. b

AMTA has clinched a victory for Alberta fleets. Following months of dis-cussion with the province, Alberta Transportation an-nounced it will help make it easier for Alberta carri-ers to switch to liquefied natural gas (LNG) to power commercial vehicles.

Alberta Transportation has told AMTA, effective immediately, carriers will be able to obtain over-weight steer axle permits for the purpose of accom-modating the extra weight of LNG fuel tanks. Permits are available from Alberta Transport’s Central Permit Office in Red Deer by call-ing 1-800-662-7138.

“Many of our members are interested in switching to LNG power vehicles, but the extra weight of

the fuel tanks, which can be 1500 kgs heavier than conventional fuel tanks, erodes the amount of cargo commercial vehicles can carry,” says Don Wilson, AMTA’s executive director. “That was an impediment to using LNG. With this move, the province has paved the way to allowing LNG fuelled units to carry an equivalent maximum load compared to conven-tionally fuelled units.”

AMTA is heartened by the province’s timely re-sponse to AMTA’s concern. “Just weeks ago, Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver toldAMTA that his ministry was reviewing our request and would respond soon,” says Wilson.

A statement issued by Alberta Transportation de-

tailed these points:• Alberta Transporta-

tion supports the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and LNG as al-ternative fuels as long as any conversions are done in accordance with Canadian Standards As-sociation standards.

• It is anticipated that LNG powered vehicles will exceed maximum legal weights and will require a special permit allowing for the extra weight to be distributed between the steer and drive axles.

• For nearly 20 years, nat-ural gas has been used as a vehicle fuel in Canada.

• Benefits of liquid natu-ral gas (LNG) include energy security, reduc-tion in urban emissions, reduction in greenhouse gases, and economic life cycle benefits.

• In 2005, only 0.2 per cent of vehicles registered in Alberta were powered by natural gas. b

The Government Ac-countability Office (GAO) released a report examin-ing vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) fees as an equitable and efficient alternative for long-term highway rev-enues.

The report, “Pilot Pro-gram Could Help De-termine the Viability of Mileage Fees for Certain Vehicles,” examined mile-age fee initiatives in the United States, the con-sumer effect of the rates needed to adequately fund the Highway Trust Fund (HTF), and state depart-ments of transportation (DOT) projections for fu-ture revenue demands.

GAO found that privacy continues to be a concern and that collection costs associated with such fees

would likely be greater than those for fuel taxes. The agency contends that a VMT system for com-mercial truck and electric vehicles would be a more manageable system, espe-cially since a majority of state DOTs already support such an initiative. The GAO therefore recommends that Congress establish a na-tional pilot program to test the viability of such fees for commercial trucks and electric vehicles.

The need for sustain-able, long-term revenue streams for our nation’s transportation remains an important issue for law-makers at both the federal and state level. While in-coming House Transporta-tion & Infrastructure Chair-man Bill Shuster (R-Pa.)

has said all options need to be on the table, several states are making infra-structure initiatives a prior-ity in their 2013 legislative sessions.

Virginia Gov. Bob Mc-Donnell (R) announced plans to eliminate the gas tax, raise the state sales tax, dedicate the increase to transportation needs, in-crease vehicle registration fees, and tax alternative fuel vehicles. Lawmak-ers and governors in sev-eral other states, including Maryland, Iowa, Missis-sippi, and Wisconsin, are exploring hiking their gas tax to ensure stable invest-ment levels.

While AED is happy to see states confront-ing the issue of long-term transportation needs, the association continues to believe that it is essential to address the problem at a federal level to ensure a national network of roads, bridges, and highways. b

Freightliner Trucks recently announced the availability of high-per-formance LED headlam-ps custom-engineered for the Freightliner Cascadia by Truck-Lite Co. LLC. The new headlamps will also be available as an af-termarket retrofit option from Freightliner dealers across North America.

“We’re proud to add Truck-Lite LED head-lamps to the Freightliner aftermarket parts offer-ing,” said Todd Biggs, di-rector, aftermarket parts and service marketing for Daimler Trucks North

America. “The new LED technology delivers lighting performance far and above the traditional halogen systems current-ly in use on most heavy-duty trucks.”

The new Truck-Lite LED headlamps were initially developed for military use and offer increased durability, vis-ibility and safety to the heavy-duty truck plat-form. Manufactured in the USA, Truck-Lite’s forward-lighting technol-ogy has been proven on vehicles serving in Iraq and Afghanistan since

Mack Trucks honoured the service of one of its long-standing dealers, the Kriete Group, Inc., recent-ly at the Mack Customer Center in Allentown, Pa. with a special tour and an award presented by Kevin Flaherty, president of Mack Trucks North American Sales & Marketing, and Da-vid Barletta, Mack Central Region vice president.

For the last 60 years, the Kriete Group, Inc., based in Milwaukee, Wis., has been one of the premier dealers in the Mack dealer net-work, which features 429 service points throughout the U.S. and Canada. Now operated by Roger Kriete, chairman, and David Krie-

te, CEO and dealer princi-pal, the Kriete Group was formed by Roger’s father, Henry Kriete, in 1951 when he purchased the dealer-ship from Mack Trucks.

“Being a Mack dealer brings our family and our employees great pride,” said David Kriete. “We are honoured that Mack recog-nized the 60 years of ser-vice that we’ve committed to being a Mack dealer, and we are looking forward to another 60 years.”

The Kriete Group is a family-owned group of heavy and medium-duty truck distributorships that has grown to five locations throughout the state of Wis-consin. The company oper-

ates facilities in Fond du Lac, Madison, Green Bay and Racine, in addition to the original Milwaukee dealer-ship as well as a lease and rental organization. Mack selected the Kriete Group as Mack Distributor of the Year for the Central Region of the U.S. five times during the last 60 years. Mack also twice named Kriete as the Mack Trucks United States Distributor of the Year in 1999 and 2005.

“Partners like Roger and David Kriete have made Mack one of the most suc-cessful truck brands in the market,” Flaherty said. “It was a privilege to honor the Kriete Group, which has been strengthening customer relationships and providing excellent service and support to Mack cus-tomers for six decades.” b

Mack Honours The Kriete Group, Inc. For 60 Years As A Mack Dealer

The Manitoba Trucking Association is encouraged by the recent announce-ment by Manitoba that the focus for Manitoba Infrastructure and Trans-portation in 2013 will be bridges and roads, accord-ing to a recent release by Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation Min-ister Steve Ashton. Some of the projects announced include work that has been identified by the Manitoba Trucking Association as a priority, including repairs to Highway 6 and upgrades to Highway 16.

“We have been tell-ing governments for years that an increasing and se-rous infrastructure defi-cit has been created and

will only continue to get worse unless it is prop-erly addressed. While we are obviously pleased that the government is focus-ing its efforts on roads and bridges, the reality is that much of the work is sim-ply rehabilitation projects on items that have been left to deteriorate for far too long,” explains MTA Executive Director Bob Dolyniuk. “Rather than be-ing able to spend time and money on new projects, a significant number of the projects, especially bridges, are requirements simply to bring infrastructure up to an acceptable standard. For example, two overpasses on the Perimeter Highway are scheduled for signifi-

cant rehabilitation work. Haven’t these structures been properly maintained over the last number of de-cades? Instead, significant portions of this province’s infrastructure dollars are spent on repairs because the structures weren’t maintained appropriately during the life of the struc-tures. While this govern-ment’s ten year commit-ment to infrastructure is commendable, due to the significant infrastructure deficit that exists, we aren’t making any progress in this province; we are bare-ly treading water when it comes to infrastructure.”

Some of the infrastruc-ture investments that Man-itoba Trucking Association would like to see include competing the north Perim-eter Highway intersection at Highway 59, significant improvements to Highway 6, and resurfacing Highway 59. b

Manitoba’s Infrastructure Renewal Plan A Good Start

New Freightliner High-Vis Truck-Lite LED Headlamps

2007.Brian Kupchella,

Truck-Lite president stat-ed, “The overwhelming-ly positive response to our LED forward-lighting products from military and light-duty operators opened the door to the heavy-duty commercial transportation sector and this new partnership. We’re looking forward to providing Freightliner’s customers with the high-est performing visibility systems available on the market.”

For trucks other than the Freightliner Casca-dia, easy-to-install after-market retrofit options include traditional 7” round and 5”x7” alterna-tives.

Truck-Lite’s LED for-ward-lighting headlamps offer improved driver vis-ibility through its more natural light spectrum, leading to improved ob-ject recognition at night and increased daytime visibility. Truck-Lite’s LED beam pattern also reduces eye-strain for drivers and reduces harsh headlight glare to oncoming traffic. An additional benefit is a significant reduction in amperage draw on the vehicles electrical sys-tem, freeing up power for other uses and result-ing in a 50-times longer lighting system life than conventional halogen technology. b

Shell’s FuellingChange programme recently made funding awards of close to $1 million to support over 50 environmental projects across Canada. The win-ning projects range from building an industrial com-

posting system to reducing waste entering landfills in Alberta, to the delivery of water management and watershed educational programming to over 20 schools in Montmagny and area in Quebec.

Two organizations re-ceived the top grant of $100,000:• Clean Nova Scotia, based

in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for their project “Drive Wiser-Drive Less- Get More”;

• Credit Valley Conserva-tion Foundation in Mis-sissauga, Ontario for their project “Conserva-tion Youth Corps”.“Clean Nova Scotia is

incredibly excited to be a top grant recipient from Shell’s FuellingChange,” said Andrea MacDonald, Transportation Manager for Clean Nova Scotia. “Funds received will enable us to develop our new Drive Less initiative; encouraging Nova Scotians to discover sustainable transportation options available to them.”

FuellingChange winners come from across Canada. Other recipients include Edson & District Recycling Society in Edson, Alberta and NEAT Green Freight in Fort St. John, B.C.

Since 2011 Fuel-lingChange has invited Shell customers to vote on-line for pre-selected projects that restore, pro-tect and enhance Canada’s land, air and water. All pre-selected projects receive $10,000 and those with the most votes are eligible to receive grants of $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000. An-nually Shell grants $2 mil-lion to participating envi-ronmental projects in land, air and water.

“FuellingChange allows our customers to have a say in the environmental projects we fund,” said Shell Canada’s President and Country Chair, Lor-raine Mitchelmore. “Al-most five million votes have been cast in less than two years and we’ve awarded close to $3 million in grants to environmental projects across Canada. I’d like to thank all the organi-zations for submitting their projects and our customers for voting.” b

The local economy is getting a boost in the Town of Kirkland Lake, where a new wastewater treatment plant is being built.

This project includes building a new waste-water treatment facility next to the existing plant which will be decommis-sioned and converted into a pumping station to pro-vide additional storm water capacity during peak flows. It is scheduled to be com-pleted in spring 2014.

“This new wastewater treatment plant will reduce pollution, protect the en-vironment and create jobs here in Kirkland Lake,” said Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipiss-ing-Timiskaming. “This is great news for the local economy. Our Govern-

ment is proud to invest in this project that will serve the needs of this growing community for decades to come.”

“Ontario has made un-precedented investments in infrastructure to strengthen our communities, support local economies and cre-ate jobs,” said the Honour-able Bob Chiarelli, Minis-ter of Infrastructure. “The new wastewater treatment plant will protect the envi-ronment and improve the quality of life for residents of the Town of Kirkland Lake, now and in the fu-ture.”

“The Town of Kirkland Lake thanks both levels of government for coming to the table with funding for the new wastewater treat-ment plant in our time of

need”, said Bill Enouy, Mayor of the Town of Kirkland Lake. “This new wastewater treatment plant is crucial for the town’s sustainability and growth.”

The new plant will pro-tect the environment by reducing the amount of wastewater entering lo-cal waterways, which will help to preserve the areas around Murdock Creek and Blanche River. It will also enable Kirkland Lake to meet federal and provin-cial wastewater regulations and ensure sufficient treat-ment capacity to support population growth over the next 20 years or more.

The Government of Canada is providing up to $16 million toward eligible project costs through the Green Infrastructure Fund and the Province of On-tario is also contributing up to $16 million. The Town of Kirkland Lake will con-tribute the balance of the total estimated project cost of $35.48 million. b
