NASCAR recently an-nounced a number of changes to the selection process for the NASCAR Hall of Fame (NHOF), in-cluding a modification to driver eligibility parameters and the creation of a new award to honor significant contributions to the growth and success of the sport.

In all, six changes and updates will be made start-ing with the selection of the Class of 2015 – all de-signed to improve upon an already strong process that has led to the selection of 25 deserving inductees.

“We’re very proud of how the NASCAR Hall of Fame has evolved and be-lieve the first five classes reflect the strength of the nominating and voting procedures, with voices from every corner of our industry included in the selection process,” said Brett Jewkes, NASCAR Vice President and Chief Communications Officer.

“Based on feedback from voters, industry leaders, media who cover our sport and the fans, we believe the changes announced today are a strong recognition of the uniqueness of our sport and will make the over-all selection process even stronger in how we hon-our those who have driven NASCAR to great success on and off the track.”

Following is a summary of changes:Driver Eligibility

Currently, drivers who have competed in NASCAR for at least 10 years and been retired for three years are eligible for nomination to the NHOF. That will not change.

Moving forward, how-ever, drivers who have competed for a minimum of 10 years and reached their 55th birthday on or before Dec. 31 of the year prior to the nominating year are immediately eligi-ble for the NHOF. Also, any

competitor who has com-peted for 30 or more years in NASCAR competition by Dec. 31 of the year prior to the nominating year is au-tomatically eligible, regard-less of age.

Drivers may continue to compete after reaching any of the aforementioned milestones without com-promising eligibility for nomination or induction.Nominating Committee Will Select Five Fewer Nominees for Enshrinement

Throughout its history, the NHOF Nominating Committee has selected 25 nominees each year to be discussed and voted on for NHOF enshrinement. That number will be reduced to 20 starting with the selec-tion process for the 2015 class.Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR

Beginning with the 2015 class, a new award – Land-

mark Award for Outstand-ing Contributions to NAS-CAR – will be initiated to honour significant contri-butions to the growth and esteem of NASCAR.

Potential Landmark Award recipients could in-clude competitors or those working in the sport as a member of a racing or-ganization, track facility, race team, sponsor, media partner or being a general ambassador for the sport through a professional or non-professional role. Award winners will remain eligible for NHOF enshrine-ment.

Five nominees will be selected by the NHOF Nominating Committee and then be voted on by the Voting Panel. To win the award, an individual must appear on at least 60 percent of the ballots and no more than one award will be presented annually. Voting for this award will occur immedi-ately following the voting for the NHOF class and be monitored by the same independent accounting firm that oversees NHOF voting. Nominating Committee to Meet, Vote on 20 NHOF Nominees /

Five Landmark Award Nominees

For the first time, the Nominating Committee will meet in person to dis-cuss, debate and vote to create two ballots – the NHOF ballot and the Land-mark Award for Outstand-ing Contributions to NAS-CAR ballot. Previously, the committee submitted nominees via mail to an in-dependent accounting firm that tallies the nominations in order to create the final NHOF ballot.

The Nominating Com-mittee will meet during Speedweeks at Daytona on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, and the nominees for both ballots will be announced later that day.Nominees To Be Recused From the Nominating / Voting Process

Any member of the Nominating Committee or Voting Panel who ap-peared on the previous year’s ballot or current year’s ballot will now be recused from participating

in the nominating and / or voting process for as long as he / she appears on the ballot. If an individual who is currently on the Nominating Committee or Voting Panel is inducted, or is no longer included on a final ballot, he or she is immediately reinstated to active participation on the panel(s).Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Added To Voting Panel

As was already an-nounced on Nov. 14 at Homestead-Miami Speed-way during the annual NASCAR Championship Contenders Press Confer-ence, the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champi-on will be added to the fol-lowing year’s voting panel.

That means Jimmie Johnson, who captured his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, will be included in the selection meeting and can cast a vote for the NHOF Class of 2015 on Voting Day, Wednes-day, May 21, 2014. b

With temperatures dropping, and more acces-sories than ever pulling en-ergy from within the cab, the need for a dependable battery is increasingly im-portant. Alliance Truck Parts offers three types of dependable batteries that can be trusted to keep truckers on the road even in the coldest weather.

“As winter weather ap-proaches, drivers and fleet maintenance managers should pay extra attention to the truck’s electrical sys-tem, and batteries in par-ticular” said Todd Biggs, Director, Aftermarket Parts and Service Marketing for Daimler Trucks North America. “Cold tempera-tures can limit the speed at which a battery takes a charge, and can hurt the vehicle’s overall perfor-mance.”

Battery issues can be hard to detect by the opera-tor. In very cold weather before the battery warms up, the truck’s alternator can sometimes power the vehicle’s load and lights, masking the fact that that the battery isn’t accepting a normal charge. As it warms up, it will return to normal performance levels unless something is wrong with the battery itself.

“The battery should be inspected for corrosion, loose mounting hardware, case cracks, and deforma-tion at each chassis lubrica-tion. Preventative mainte-nance for the cold weather months should also include a state-of-charge and capac-ity load test,” said Biggs.

Alliance Truck Parts of-fers starting batteries for pure cold cranking power, dual-purpose batteries that serve starting purposes as well as powering multiple accessories, and AGM bat-teries, which are specially designed to handle the load of multiple, power hungry accessories while resisting vibration and corrosion.

Alliance starting and du-al-purpose batteries feature heavy-duty construction and a maintenance-free, watering-free design. Both types of batteries include tough, stainless steel ter-minals, which prevent cor-rosion and offer a secure connection. They are also available in a wide selec-tion of performance levels

to meet most cranking, amp hour and reserve ca-pacity needs.

Both starting and dual-purpose batteries are made with a spill-resistant design to protect nearby equip-ment from accidental dam-age and both are designed to resist vibration damage for better performance and a longer life.

Alliance Truck Parts batteries offer full-framed optimized power plates, which deliver quick, ef-ficient starting power. Du-al-purpose batteries offer heavy-duty plates which contain high-density oxide for high-cycling applica-tions. They also offer glass mat-lined separators for added vibration protection.AGM Batteries

For trucks running mul-tiple accessories, the Alli-ance AGM battery offers an optimal combination of starting, cycling and deep cycle service with more power for accesso-ries, especially when key-off power is crucial. It is available in 1000/800- and

1060/925-amp cranking/cold cranking ratings and its absorbed glass mat con-struction optimizes acid-to-plate contact, which in-creases power delivery and performance longevity.

The Alliance AGM bat-tery offers low internal re-sistance for quick starting, which also reduces wear on the alternator and the entire recharging system. Where vibrations can be a problem for other batteries, the AGM battery contains vibration protection for bet-ter performance and a lon-ger life. AGM technology also delivers a completely spill proof design that vir-tually eliminates gassing and is safer to use around expensive equipment.

All Alliance Truck Parts batteries are made in the U.S. and fit nearly any make and model of heavy-duty truck. They are backed by a 1-year and in some cases an 18-month/unlimited-mile nationwide warranty serviceable at over 800 locations, includ-ing Freightliner, Sterling, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses dealerships in the U.S. and Canada and Travel Centers of America and Petro locations nation-wide. b

Refuse customers seeking a lightweight and cost-effective vehi-cle that is also tough and reliable can now look to the Mack Granite Medi-um Heavy Duty (MHD) rear loader, recently in-troduced at the 2013 Ca-nadian Waste and Recy-cling Expo.

The Mack Granite MHD rear loader offers a reduced weight option for refuse companies and municipalities desiring a truck built for lighter-du-ty cycles, such as short inner-city routes or for service in smaller towns. Because the Granite MHD has lighter weight components than other refuse models, it offers an economic alternative to help fleets increase their return on invest-ment.

“The MHD rear load-er is a complement to the existing Mack refuse product line that in-cludes the Mack Granite and the Mack TerraPro

Cabover and Low Entry vehicles,” said Curtis Dorwart, Mack Refuse Marketing Product Man-ager. “This tough, light-weight truck is a cus-tomized option for our refuse customers who need a vehicle that is ideal for shorter routes and lower gross pay-load. We feel that it’s important to provide a complete offer of light-er- and heavier-duty re-fuse vehicles so we can tailor the truck to the application.”

The clean back-of-cab design of the Gran-ite MHD accommodates a range of body options and makes the vehicle particularly well-suited to rear loader applica-tions. Available in 4x2 or 6x4 configurations, the truck is equipped with a Cummins ISL9 345- horsepower engine with a maximum torque rating of 1,150 lb.-ft., offering the power and durability that Mack is known for

in a lighter package. In fact, the MHD rear loader is available as a Class 7 solution when config-ured as a 4x2.

The MHD rear loader’s cab also offers improved driver comfort because it is mounted on airbags and shocks. With a short bumper-to-tire distance, the MHD rear loader has a superior front-end swing clearance and an excellent wheel cut that allows it to maneuver in and out of tight collec-tion sites.

“Mack has been in the refuse business for more than 100 years, sup-plying industry-leading solutions to best meet customers’ needs,” said John Walsh, Mack Vice President of Marketing. “As the clear market leader in refuse today, Mack vehicles are de-signed and spec’d for the particular require-ments of our customers. The Mack Granite MHD rear loader is just anoth-er great example of the purposeful design of our trucks and of our com-mitment to supplying a full range of products to meet the needs of the re-fuse industry.” b

Many things have changed at Kenworth’s manufacturing plants since the Kirkland, Wash. based company built its first trucks in 1923. But one thing that has remained constant during the compa-ny’s 90-year history – the quality and care that goes into the assembly of every

Kenworth truck.Today, Kenworth trucks

are built at assembly plants in Renton, Wash., Chillicothe, Ohio, and Ste. Therese, Quebec, and are available with PACCAR MX-13 engines assembled at the PACCAR Engine Company plant in Colum-bus, Miss.

“Talk to any of the em-ployees at our assembly plants and the one thing you will hear over and over is how much they care about the work they do,” said Daryl Simon, Kenworth Assistant Gen-eral Manager for Opera-tions. “Our employees un-derstand that they carry on

Kenworth’s tradition for building trucks with the highest quality. They also take great pride in having built many Kenworths for the same loyal, repeat cus-tomers over the years.”

Kenworth’s long-term success in the trucking in-dustry can be traced back to a philosophy established early in the company’s his-tory. “The vision was to build the right Kenworth truck for each customer’s application…and build that truck to last,” said Simon. “That philosophy contin-ues to this day and has re-sulted in Kenworth produc-ing high-quality, durable trucks that feature innova-tive design and state-of-the-art technology.”Kenworth’s Assembly Plant in Seattle – 1923

The care that employ-ees take today in building the company’s two new-est models – the Kenworth T680 and the Kenworth T880 – began with the as-sembly of 1-ton, 2-ton and 3-ton chassis at Kenworth’s first assembly plant in Se-attle where trucks were stall built. That first year, Kenworth produced 78 six-cylinder, gasoline-powered trucks. Today, in celebra-tion of Kenworth’s 90th

anniversary, a 1924 Ken-worth truck built in Seattle and on special loan from PACCAR is now on display a short distance away at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI). In total, Kenworth now has built more than 900,000 trucks in its 90-year history.Yale Avenue and Mercer Street Plant in Seattle – 1929 – 1946

Growing demand for Kenworth trucks, especial-ly from the logging indus-try, led to the construction of a brand new, 30,000 square-foot Kenworth fac-tory. Four times the origi-nal plant’s size, the new facility was located at 1263 Mercer St., near the corner of Yale Ave. and Mercer in Seattle’s South Lake Union district. During the 1929 grand opening ceremony, Seattle Mayor Frank Ed-wards was on hand to ce-ment a commemorative cornerstone into the exteri-or brickwork of the factory.

Through the 1930s, Kenworth assembled new trucks for public agen-cies and motor coaches for bus companies and refurbished older Ken-worth trucks. The Seattle plant supported America’s World War II effort as the

predominantly female workforce produced parts for the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 subas-semblies, and assembled trucks for civilian use. Kenworth also built the M-1 wrecker, a six-wheel drive truck for the U.S. Army that was custom-ized for extreme duty and heavy lifting. A crane mounted on its chassis had fore and aft winches for retrieving tanks from deep mud or shell holes. In late 1942, orders for 1,500 M-1 wreckers taxed the plant’s capacity.

“That’s when Kenworth helped increase productiv-ity by replacing its tradi-tional stall-built method of assembly and implemented a moving production line going through the vari-ous assembly, paint and inspection stations. It was the early forerunner of the production system our plants use today to produce quality Kenworth trucks,” said Simon.

Today, that 1263 Mercer St. building – now owned by The Blume Company – still stands and is used, in part, by Bright Horizons Family Solutions as a child care facility.

East Marginal Way Assembly Plant in South Seattle – 1946 – 2001

On March 3, 1946, the first truck rolled off the as-sembly line at Kenworth’s new plant at a 13-acre fa-cility on East Marginal Way south of Seattle. Kenworth quickly made a successful transition from military to commercial markets, and responded to pent-up de-mand as it had become im-possible for companies to buy trucks during the war.

“The new plant was much larger and offered the opportunity to create new manufacturing systems to maximize quality and ef-ficiency. For example, a chain conveyor production line extended the length of the structure,” said Si-mon, who noted that the facility was later expanded to 26 acres in the 1960s. “This Seattle plant and its employees produced The World’s Best trucks for more than 50 years – quite an accomplishment,” said Simon.Kenworth Chillicothe Plant – 1974 to Present

In 1974, Kenworth built a 300,000 square-foot plant on 120 acres in Chillicothe, Ohio. Cabs were made and

trimmed at Kenworth’s fa-cility in the Seattle area and then shipped by rail car to Chillicothe. As production ramped up, the Chillicothe plant’s employees made and trimmed the cabs.

In 2005, the Chilli-cothe plant celebrated the production of its historic 250,000th truck. A year later, it earned national rec-ognition as Quality Maga-zine’s “Plant of the Year” in the large plant category of over 250 employees.

A major, two-year reno-vation project, completed several years later, in-creased the plant’s size by nearly one-third and build capacity by 50 percent while adding new technol-ogies, such as a highly au-tomated paint system. The expansion project intro-duced new manufacturing technologies and process-es, extended Chillicothe’s mainline; added new cab, sleeper, trim lines; en-hanced ergonomics; and included exciting advance-ments in plant logistics. As a result, Kenworth-Chillicothe became one of the most advanced truck plants in the industry.

In 2012, a state-of-the art robotic cab assembly cell was added to build the

2.1-meter wide cab for the Kenworth T680 and new Kenworth T880.

Since 1974, the Chilli-cothe plant has produced more than 410,000 trucks. The facility produces a broad range of Class 8 trucks, including the T660, T680, T800 and W900 and soon, the T880, with an eye toward efficiency and en-vironmental stewardship, while meeting customer expectations.

“Chillicothe plant em-ployees are well-versed in lean manufacturing,” Simon said. “The concept of lean manufacturing is a team-based method of con-tinuous process improve-ments based on customer requirements. Employees work in small teams em-powered to identify oppor-tunities for improvement in the assembly process. This team approach helps the plant produce The World’s Best trucks.”

The Chillicothe plant has earned prestigious ISO 14001:2004 certification for effective environmental management systems and received the prestigious Global Six Sigma award for Best Project Achievement in the Health, Safety and Environment category.

Kenworth Renton Plant – 1993 to Present

In 1993, Kenworth opened a new 300,000 square-foot plant on a 40-acre site in Renton, Wash. The plant’s first truck, a Kenworth T600B, a later version of Kenworth’s first aerodynamic truck that revolutionized the trucking industry, went to work for Stevens Transport.

“When completed, the Renton plant was consid-ered one of the most effi-cient in the industry with innovative insulation and lighting systems, and the latest in paint technology, ergonomic assistance, and environmental monitoring and control systems,” said Simon.

In 2000, Fortune maga-zine recognized the Renton plant as one of “America’s Elite Factories”, and re-ceived Assembly Maga-zine’s inaugural “Assembly Plant of the Year Award” in 2004. A year later, the Renton plant had the honour of producing the 700,000th Kenworth truck in company history.

The Renton Plant holds ISO 14001:2004 environ-mental management sys-tems certification, and numerous Best Workplace

for Waste Prevention and Recycling Awards from the King County (Wash.) Solid Waste Division and Gold Awards from the King County (Wash.) Industrial Waste Program. The plant has now received the Gold Award every year for 14 consecutive years.

In 2013, Kenworth-Renton celebrated its 20th anniversary. The plant has produced more than 130,000 Kenworth trucks, and currently produces Kenworth’s T660, T800, W900, C500, K500 and 963 models along with some medium duty Kenworth T370s and T440s. Nearly half of the plant’s cur-rent employees have been working for Kenworth since the plant opened in 1993.

“Our employees have

played a key role in the plant’s success with qual-ity, pride and technology going into every Kenworth truck that is produced there,” said Simon. “And Kenworth-Renton contin-ues the company’s amaz-ing legacy of making trucks in the Seattle area for the past 90 years.”PACCAR Ste. Therese Plant, 1999 to Present

In 1999, with an eye toward improving the as-sembly of medium duty Kenworth trucks, PACCAR opened an all-new, 425,000 square-foot state-of-the-art truck manufacturing facil-ity in Ste. Therese, Quebec, near Montreal.

“The employees at the PACCAR Ste. Therese plant are especially dedicated to building excellent medium

Hundreds of Canadian truck owners and operators got a first-hand look at the new Kenworth T880 and the new Kenworth T680 52-inch sleeper for regional haul ap-plications during the 2013 Kenworth Road Tour.

“The Kenworth Road Tour generated excitement among customers for Ken-worth’s newest vocational

model, the Kenworth T880, which is now available for order and enters production this fall,” said Alan Fenni-more, Kenworth Vocational Marketing Manager, who heads the tour. “And when customers see the Kenworth T680 52-inch sleeper, they understand why the T680 is one of the fastest selling trucks in Kenworth’s 90-

year history.”Customers also got a clos-

er look at the 12.9-liter PAC-CAR MX-13 engine, which offers excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability and durability, lightweight design, and low cost of ownership. The T680 and T880 are standard with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated up to 500 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. The engine is

assembled at the state-of-the-art PACCAR Engine plant in Columbus, Miss. “Custom-ers who have purchased the PACCAR MX-13 engine with the new 500/1,850 rating real-ly like the low-end torque that it provides,” said Fennimore.

The 2013 Kenworth Road Tour made its first Canadian stop in September with a visit to Inland Kenworth – Langley in British Columbia, which attracted nearly 150 customers.

“Customers in local and regional haul applications were very impressed with the Kenworth T680 52-inch sleeper,” said Bill Currie, President and Chief Operat-ing Officer of Inland Ken-worth. Inland Kenworth operates 22 dealerships in Western Canada and the southwestern United States. “It offers them the ability to reduce weight to increase payload, while still offering drivers a comfortable envi-ronment to work and rest while on the road two or three nights a week.”

The Kenworth T880 has impressed customers in various vocational ap-plications as well. “Cus-tomers want trucks that offer value, and lower lifetime maintenance and operating costs,” said

Fennimore. “Fleets and operators in vocational applications appreciate the Kenworth T880’s hood design with its 5-piece construction and bolted-on fenders and how such a design will help lower the cost of servicing the truck over its lifetime.”

The tour made a Sep-tember stop at Custom Truck Sales - Saskatoon, which also attracted cus-tomers with an open house and barbecue. Brent Leach, President of Custom Truck Sales, said the T880 also greatly impressed his deal-ership’s customers. “The Kenworth T880 was ap-pealing to customers in oil and gas exploration, heavy haul and construction, par-ticularly those who have over the years run T800s to pull B-trains. The T880’s turning radius offers per-formance comparable to the T800, while also pro-viding improved visibility

and a more comfortable interior,” Leach said.

“When they climb into the truck’s cab and experi-ence the difference a wider 2.1-meter cab makes in driver comfort and how the 3-inch lower crown height on the T880’s hood aids visibility, their faces and eyes light up,” Leach said. “To see that is really quite satisfying.” Custom Truck Sales also operates dealer-ship locations in Estevan and Regina, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The tour also made stops at GreatWest Ken-worth – Calgary, Alberta; Edmonton Kenworth-Northside, in Edmonton, Alberta; Kenworth Toronto – Mississauga, Ontario; and Montreal Kenworth in St. Laurent, Quebec, in ad-dition to a number of stops in the United States during September and October. Fleets who only occa-sionally travel in Cali-fornia may be able to benefit from a Califor-nia Air Resources Board change to its Truck & Bus Rule in 2014. The state reportedly is up-ping its low-use mileage exemption from 1,000 miles to somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

According to trade media reports, the low-use exemption of the state’s Truck & Bus Rule will be boosted and will be available through 2020.

Moreover, the two reported the “Good Faith Effort” rule will let truck owners have six months in 2014 to replace or retrofit their trucks to meet CARB standards or to apply for loans and grants to

enable them to do so.However, this

change is not likely to be adopted before April, so the 1,000 mile limit that is specified in the regulation is what is currently avail-able to fleets.

To take advantage of the low-use exemption, carriers will need to re-port the vehicle, engine and owner information to CARB for registra-tion (click here).

Owner-operators who are leased to large fleets can also take advantage of the exemption.

CTA has learned that another option that would exist is a “three-day pass” which provides a three-day exemption for a single vehicle. Only one ve-hicle per fleet per year is eligible. b

cost and high resale value,” said Simon.

Employees at the Ste. Therese plant assemble Kenworth’s T170, T270 and T370 medium duty trucks. The Ste. Therese plant has earned presti-gious International Stan-

dards Organization (ISO) 14001:2004 certification for effective environmen-tal management systems, IS0 9000 quality assurance certification, and OHSAS 18001 health and safety certification.

In 2007, the PACCAR

Just 12 short years after the planted opened, a Ken-worth T370 was recognized

“PACCAR wants cus-tomers to not only have full confidence in their Kenworth trucks, but also in the engines that power

them,” Simon said.In 2009, PACCAR com-

pleted a new engine manu-facturing plant and technol-ogy center at a 400-acre site in Columbus, Miss. The 420,000 square-foot plant, which Simon calls the most technologically advanced diesel engine manufactur-ing facility in North Amer-

ica, began full assembly of the 12.9-liter PACCAR MX engine at the end of 2010. Today, the PACCAR Engine plant produces the PAC-CAR MX-13 engine, which is standard in Kenworth’s heavy duty trucks.

“The PACCAR engine plant features advanced computer-controlled tool-ing in both machining and assembly processes. This provides extremely close tolerances in all operations and results in reliable, long

lasting engines with indus-try-leading performance and design life,” Simon said.

“Throughout the years, Kenworth and PACCAR have never shied away from investments in new facilities and equipping them with the latest tech-nology,” Simon added. “Today, these facilities allow Kenworth to offer customers premium trucks built to exacting standards with reliable, high-perfor-mance PACCAR engines.

The skill of long-time em-ployees and their willing-ness to develop and adopt new technologies also plays a key role in Ken-worth’s success at building quality premium trucks for our customers.”

Kenworth Truck Com-pany is the manufacturer of The World’s Best(R) heavy and medium duty trucks. Kenworth’s Internet home page is at www.kenworth.com. Kenworth is a PAC-CAR company. b

In recognizing National School Bus Safety Week, Bendix Commercial Ve-hicle Systems LLC noted that while today’s leading-edge active and supportive safety technologies aid in reducing the likelihood of commercial vehicle acci-dents, they also have the potential to improve school bus safety.

National School Bus Safety Week is a public education program pro-moting school bus safety, sponsored by the Nation-al Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT). It takes place the third week in October each year. Ben-dix, the North American leader in the development and manufacture of active safety and braking system technologies, supports the National School Bus Safe-ty Week mission of mak-ing school bus transporta-tion safer for all students.

The company shared its insights on safety technolo-gies and school buses Oct. 19 at the annual conference of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) in Grand Rap-ids, Mich. Fred Andersky, Bendix Director of Govern-ment and Industry Affairs,

and Director of Marketing – Charging, spoke to those in attendance. His talk was the latest in the ongoing ef-forts by Bendix to educate OEMs, state pupil transpor-tation personnel, and oth-ers about active and sup-portive safety technologies for school buses through demonstrations, webcasts, and presentations.

“Bendix understands schools’ commitment to safe transportation, and we will continue to develop the best technologies for supporting that mission,” Andersky said. “We be-lieve the same technolo-gies that commercial truck fleets and motor coaches use to help mitigate or even avoid accidents can play an important part in protect-ing America’s school bus drivers and passengers as well.”

According to the NAPT, school buses travel ap-proximately 4 billion miles annually, providing an estimated 10 billion stu-dent trips, and remaining the safest option for get-ting students to and from school. National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion reports indicate that the fatality rate for school buses is 0.2 fatalities per

100 million vehicle miles traveled, compared to 1.5 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in cars. Those figures show students are nearly eight times safer riding on school buses.

Bendix asserts that school buses have the potential to become even safer, by using the same advanced technologies that currently help im-prove commercial vehicle safety.

The company has initially outfitted a new model school bus with three advanced technolo-gies as part of its com-prehensive testing and demonstration program. The systems are Bendix ESP Electronic Stabil-ity Program full-stability system, Bendix Wing-man Advanced – A Colli-sion Mitigation Technol-ogy, and Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes. Bendix plans to continue to add additional advanced technologies to the bus.

“No technology can re-place the need for good school bus drivers prac-ticing safe driving habits, along with continuous, comprehensive driver training,” Andersky said. “But today’s advanced safety systems hold the po-tential for making school bus travel even safer for drivers, pupils, and every-one around them on the roadways.” b

At its annual vendor appreciation dinner and ceremony on October 22 in Middlebury, Ind., Newmar Corporation recognized Freightliner Custom Chassis Corpo-ration (FCCC) with its Virgil Miller Award of Excellence, the high-est honour it bestows on vendors each year. FCCC took top honours among a group of select vendors at the event that were being recog-nized for outstanding performance in supply-ing the luxury RV man-

ufacturer with quality components and materi-als.

“We measure our own success in large part by the success of our customers and build partners – that’s where our focus always is, and that’s what we mean when we say we’re driven by you,” said Bob Harbin, President of FCCC. “Our goal is to provide our OEMs products and technol-ogy that help them grow and succeed. As a proud partner of Newmar, we

share a culture focused on quality, craftsman-ship, innovation and customer support. We are honoured to receive this award.”

The award was de-termined and distrib-uted based on inter-nal surveys measuring each suppliers’ level of quality and service while interacting with Newmar’s purchasing, manufacturing and en-gineering departments. The Virgil Miller Award of Excellence was es-tablished in the mem-ory of Virgil D. Miller, former President of Newmar Corporation and the first President and Chairman of the Board of the RV Safety Education Foundation (RVSEF). b
