Freightliner Trucks recently announced sev-eral new value-added op-tion packages specifically geared toward its M2 106 medium duty trucks, fea-turing Allison’s new Fu-elSense product paired with the Cummins ISB6.7.

“When packaged togeth-er, our new options results in a smart business solution that contributes to fuel efficiency, as well as driver satisfaction,” said Mary Aufdemberg, Di-rector of Product Marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “In addition to performance fea-tures, we’ve bundled some of our most popular exterior appearance, comfort and con-venience options that driv-ers will appreciate during their long hours behind the wheel.” The new packages include:Efficiency Package

Designed to maximize efficiency for pickup & de-livery applications, this option package combines the new Allison FuelSense transmission programming with a DTNA-exclusive

Cummins ISB6.7 engine rating of 220hp and 600 lb/ft torque. Available in the M2 106, Freightliner Trucks is the first OEM to launch Allison FuelSense in the medium duty truck mar-ket. FuelSense is a package of transmission program-ming that automatically adapts to engine duty cy-cles and specific working conditions, significantly enhancing overall vehicle fuel efficiency. Results are optimized when FuelSense is paired with the proven Cummins ISB6.7 engine, which continues to deliver better fuel economy and reliability than any engine in its class.

Freightliner Trucks has packaged this powertrain combination with addi-tional fuel economy en-hancing options like low friction axle lube, an opti-mized drive axle ratio, and Michelin SmartWay tires designed for pickup & de-livery applications.Professional Image Package

Designed to extend the brand of your business, the professional image package focuses on the exterior of the cab. This package features a variety of chrome and bright finish options for the M2 106, including a chrome hood mounted air intake grille; a hood-mounted chromed grille; a 14” round polished air horn; chrome headlight bezels; bright-finished heated and remote mirrors; and polished stain-less steel steps.Driver Retention Package

Combining popular premium interior features, the Driver Retention Pack-age for the M2 106 will en-hance driver comfort dur-ing long hours and tough working conditions. This driver retention package compliments the M2 106’s standard fully automatic Allison transmission. Op-tions include additional storage compartments; a wood grain dashboard and instrument panel; additional in-dash 12V power outlets; a high back air suspension seat; dual driver seat armrests and an adjustable tilt and tele-scoping steering column.

These new packages will be available to order summer 2014. b

With the latest gen-eration of their aluminum moving-floor trailer de-signed for aggregate and road building applications, Titan Trailers Inc. is well positioned to become a significant player in the EU transportation industry.

Developed specifically for hauling stone and tar-mac, this Titan aggregate trailer builds on the range of Titan’s EU trailer line-up. Initially launched in 2004, the highly successful THINWALL trailers have been in service with waste haulers and construction

fleets for 10 years. The 10 m tridem THINWALL trailer will be assembled at a production and service facility in Middlesborough, England. A new design for efficient clean-out

The Titan aggregate trailer features a 9 Slat V-Floor self-unloading sys-tem from KEITH Mfg., equipped with Titan’s new clean-out plow. According to Mike Kloepfer, Presi-dent of Titan Trailers, the clean-out plow was devel-oped exclusively for use with the horizontal panel

design of THINWALL bod-ies. “We’ve invested sev-eral years of R&D looking into the problems of off-loading aggregate with a moving-floor system,” he explained. “This new plow allows highly efficient un-loading while minimizing wear and tear on the trail-er. It’s the ultimate clean-out weapon for heavy-duty haulers.”Level unloading for safety and productivity

Mike reports that he has already received his first order for 5 of the newly introduced aggregate units

from a customer who is re-placing some of their older tippers, while complement-ing their fleet with the new-est generation of Titans to increase their capacity. “Level unloading offers a great improvement in job-site safety for haulers and contractors,” says Mike. “A Titan adds reliability and durability for hauling all types of gravel, stone, soil and tarmac.”

Titan also demonstrated how the moving floor con-cept is especially suited to paving applications. As the unloader system walks the load off the trailer, the hot mat is dispensed evenly and avoids segregation of the material without remix-ing.The original THINWALL

Titan Trailers are dis-tinguished by their innova-tive THINWALL body con-struction, developed in the mid-1990s. The horizontal hollow-core smoothwall panels of extruded alu-minum have been widely adopted in North America for hauling a wide range of bulk commodities, from farm goods to “extreme duty” scrap metals. Being the lightest and the most robust trailer in the heavy duty marketplace, only THINWALL trailers fea-ture sidewalls that are as-sembled longitudinally and double machine-welded, inside and out, in a patent-ed Titan process.

The new aggregate trail-er introduces a redesigned top panel which integrates the trailer’s top rail. Its sloped tailgate is operated by a hydraulic lift. The V-Floor system is hot tarmac compatible and is resis-tant to high temperatures. It utilizes flat-top slats for easier clean-outs as well as increased versatility to accommodate additional types of cargo. Standard models are equipped with SAF axles and suspensions.A local focus for service

The UK production and service facility now sup-ports a fleet numbering

over 300 trailers in service and now claims its position as the UK’s preferred trailer for heavy-duty payloads. Brian Yuill, Managing Di-rector of Yuill & Dodds Ltd., was among the first to bring Titan into a large fleet operation. “I had some res-ervations at first,” he said, “because the construction was radically different from any other waste trailer. But I learned quickly that it was a far better design than any other traditional type of trailer that is available in the marketplace.”

Titan has been refin-ing its production system to maintain the integrity of its patents and quality standards while incorporat-ing local sources for many components. By doing final assembly in Middlesbor-

ough, it keeps the trailers cost-competitive.

THINWALL compo-nents and body fittings are produced in Canada and then packaged for shipment to the UK. The Middles-borough facility completes assembly with locally sourced running gear, tires and components. This puts Titan in position to serve a global market, able to export its unique product anywhere while providing employment, investment and strong customer ser-vice in the local markets.

“Our corporate state-ment is ‘Strength Through Innovation’”, Mike notes. “I’m very proud that we are able to be innovative in our business processes as well as our product de-sign.” b

to the BCTrucking Industry

since 1988.

I’ve been asked many times what the most con-troversial term in a lease operator contract is. What is the one term that, if changed or corrected, would make the company to company comparisons more accurate and pro-vide the most dramatic leverage to the plight of lease operators? Would it be licensing? Insurance? Mileage rate? Load/unload consideration? Or maybe wait times? Which contract term, if universally accept-ed by all companies, would truly level the playing field in the trucking industry?

The answer is to pro-vide a consistent and real-istic fuel surcharge system.

If every company pro-vided a fuel cap, comparing companies would be easy and would insulate opera-tor fuel costs from market fuel price fluctuations (the

way they should be). How-ever, most companies use a fuel surcharge system.

In the 1990s, the in-dustry had neither a cap nor surcharge because the price of oil had been $15-20 a barrel for over a decade. Shipper/receivers rejected any notion of a fuel sur-charge. It was irrelevant in the atmosphere of stable prices (out of sight out of mind). But then oil de-mand started to rise as sup-ply started to squeeze. All eyes started turning to oil as Operation Desert Storm liberated Kuwait from Sad-dam Hussein.

Even then, it took nearly a decade for shippers to fi-nally accept fuel surcharg-es as the norm and is firm-ly embedded in all freight rates today.

But what happened within lease operator con-tracts? What happened

to operators as fuel prices road a roller coaster?

Though some compa-nies started with a fuel cap, most ended up using a cent per mile surcharge. Over the years, companies changed their contracts to work out their specific bugs or find out which var-ious formulas suited their operations best without losing too many operators in the process.

However, the unfortu-nate fact is that companies use inconsistent or illogi-cal methods of calculating lease operators fuel sur-charge.

For example, some op-erators had to get 12.5 mpg in order to keep their fuel costs level. This means that any jump in fuel costs re-sulted in an over dramatic increase in operator fuel costs. Still, far too many companies don’t have their

surcharge even linked to market fuel indexes. Man-agement seems to only raise their surcharge when enough operators com-plain, forcing operators to loose cash flow while com-panies either harvest profit or fail to pass on the costs to shippers (or a combina-tion of both).

Some companies justifi-cations for their insufficient surcharges is that “not ev-ery shipper/receiver pays a surcharge”. That answer is both true and false. It is true because not all freight invoices show a separate fuel surcharge amount. The statement is also false because inherent in ev-ery bottom line freight in-voice is an assumed fuel surcharge which may be accompanied by either a positive or negative market allowance for backhaul/empty miles consideration.

However, whether the company charges fuel sur-charge to shippers or not is irrelevant to lease operator contracts. One has noth-ing to do with the other. Lease operator contracts are stand-alone. They are not dependent on market freight rates.

Trucking companies must view their lease op-

Choosing a Trucking Company:

The First Step To Levelling The Playing Field

erator contracts as an in-dependent cost structure. They may use fleet num-bers to assist in designing it, but that’s as far as the comparison can go. Lease operators are different than company drivers in productivity, availability and freight management efficiency (truck fuel and maintenance). They will always be different. Their differences should have little or nothing to do with their compensation pack-age. If lease operators get 6.5 miles to the gallon while company drivers get 6.0 mpg, the trucking com-pany cannot (or at least should not) lower operator compensation just because operators are more effi-cient.

If operators are 25% more productive with

customer satisfaction or “difficult freight issues” it should not factor into the compensation package un-less the company wishes to voluntarily pay a sur-plus for those services. But unfortunately, too many company contracts still try and compensate operators according to company cost structures.

Fuel surcharge is the primary example of this conflict. What determines the fuel consumption rate used in calculating lease operator fuel surcharge? Is it the company consump-tion rate? Is it the fuel tax consumption rate used to charge fuel tax to opera-tors? Or is it the average operator consumption rate?

The argument by truck-ing companies that fuel

Page 6: Truck Post Apr 2014

Page T-6 Your Truck & Trailer Connection, Since 1971 April 2014

surcharge to lease opera-tors are subsidized by the company is just not an accurate portrayal of the business activity.

Companies may argue that lease operators would become too expensive, to which should be replied… then don’t hire them.

If every company used the same evaluation sys-tem to compensate Lease operators, things would dramatically change. Many companies’ margins would

fall until they either went bankrupt, settled for low-er profit, or were forced to charge more for their freight (or some combina-tion of the last two).

Lease operators, those who should never be ex-posed to fuel market price fluctuations other than through consumption dif-ferences, are a flat cost per mile expense for trucking companies. They are an in-dependent business within an independent business. They should never be

used as a financial cushion when things go bad. b

Ford’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine powered a Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Riley Prototype to victory recently at Sebring International Raceway.

On one of the most sto-ried and demanding race-tracks in the country, Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Marino Franchitti took the Roush Yates-prepped Ri-ley-Ford to victory lane in the 2014 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.

Franchitti piloted the No. 01 Telcel Riley-Ford across the finish line first to earn victory in his team’s first-ev-er appearance at the legend-ary endurance race. It is the first overall victory for Ford at Sebring in 45 years.

“You read about stuff like this,” said Jamie Alli-son, Director of Ford Rac-ing. “The last time Ford took the overall win was 1969, and what really makes it so sweet is that this is a win made possi-ble by a production-based Ford EcoBoost engine. It validates what we do here at Ford –that the technol-ogy we have in our produc-tion cars is good enough to power an all-out win in the

Sebring 12-Hour.”This victory is the cul-

mination of intense prepa-ration by the Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team, Ford Racing, Ford Motor Company and Roush Yates engineers, who have worked together to prove that the heart of a produc-tion engine can stand up to the most intense demands of the rigorous Sebring track. More than 70 per-cent of the EcoBoost engine is production-based.

Three Prototypes com-pete with the Ford 3.5-liter EcoBoost: The No. 01 and No. 02 race cars of Ganassi, and the No. 60 car of Mi-chael Shank Racing. The No. 02 Comfort Revolu-tion/Big Machine Records Riley-Ford finished sixth at Sebring after spending a considerable time out front. Also making the top-10 was the No. 60 Need for Speed Riley-Ford, which finished in ninth.

Before this season began – the first year for the uni-fied TUDOR United Sports-Car Championship – Mi-chael Shank Racing teamed with Ford Racing and its 3.5-liter EcoBoost to break a series of closed-course

speed records at Daytona International Speedway that had stood since 1987. Together, they set a new record average lap speed of 222.971 mph around the high-banked oval.

The overall win at Sebring, in only the second round of the new series, demonstrates that the partnership between the teams, Ford Racing and Roush Yates is already a win-ning one.

“It is an amazing feel-ing,” said Dave Simon, en-gine engineering manager for Ford Racing. “The last 10 laps of that race were the most stressful 10 laps I’ve ever had to live through. There’s a ton of hard work by a lot of people that went into making this win hap-pen. All the guys at Ford Motor Company, everyone from Ford Racing, at Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, and from Roush Yates – it’s just a huge sense of pride to be in vic-tory lane at Sebring.”

Joining the Ford Racing family in victory lane was Raj Nair, Group Vice Presi-dent, Ford global product development.

“It was a great day,” said Nair. “The first over-all win for Ford since 1969, and at the same time, the first with our partners in Ganassi here at Sebring, in only the second race for the new engine. It doesn’t get any better than this.” b

Tearing down the eastern Gardiner Expressway and replacing it with any option that increases traffic conges-tion is not acceptable, says a newly formed coalition of diverse industry groups, which includes the Ontario Trucking Association.

Maintaining the Gar-diner’s capacity and im-proving its connection to the waterfront is the best option in order to meet cur-rent and future needs of downtown core business operations and ensure mo-bility, safety and quality of life for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, the group stated in a press release.

A report released by the City of Toronto is recom-mending that Council sup-port removing the eastern expressway that serves over 100,000 trips per day. While removal is the recom-mendation, the report sum-marized four options, only one of which maintained its current lane capacity. The report is part of the broader objective of improving To-

ronto’s waterfront.The coalition is made

up of the Ontario Trucking Association, CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO), Canadian Courier & Logistics Association, Redpath Sugar, Ontario Motor Coach Association, Toronto Industry Network and the Toronto Financial District BIA. It will address the issues and impacts of the recommendation to re-move the eastern Gardiner.

“Our coalition members all support the Waterfront Revitalization Project. We are in agreement that the Gardiner Expressway can be improved without be-ing removed. However, reducing capacity on the Gardiner would force more commuters and trucks on to Toronto’s arterial roads putting the safety of driv-ers, cyclists and pedes-trians at risk. This would have an enormous impact not only on the GTA’s economy and road conges-tion, but also the quality of life for residents,” said

Faye Lyons, Government Relations, CAA SCO.

Congestion is costing the GTHA economy $11 billion per year, accord-ing to the C.D. Howe In-stitute, and both industry and the people of Toronto will be negatively affected if lanes on the Gardiner are removed without provid-ing access to new transit options. The coalition is concerned that the broad-er impacts on the existing Greater Toronto Area’s transportation network is not being given the level of consideration it should.

The recommendation to remove the Gardiner also assumes that a Downtown Relief Subway Line and ad-ditional transit lines includ-ing the Waterfront East LRT, the Yonge North Subway Extension and Broadview Avenue transit extension are imminent. However, none are currently funded. The competitiveness and vital-ity of Toronto’s downtown core must be a high priority, according to the coalition. “Toronto’s congestion, if not improved, will continue to discourage businesses to lo-cate in the city, and will con-tribute to the frustration of those trying to get around,” said Lyons. b

Freightliner Trucks highlighted some of its toughest vocational solu-tions at the 2014 CONEX-PO-CON/AGG show. The Freightliner Trucks booth (#61940) featured the com-plete line of Freightliner severe duty (SD) models, including the 122SD with a new mid-chassis exhaust and 45-ton boom crane from National Crane Corp.

The 122SD featured in the Freightliner booth is equipped with a Detroit DD16 engine, set-back twin-steer front axle con-figuration, 13” rail, and a 48” sleeper cab. The 122SD DD16 mid-chassis exhaust package is also available with a 34” sleeper cab. The mid-chassis mounted horizontal aftertreatment system features dual cab mounted vertical tailpipes, and provides improved packaging for vocational applications. Production on the 122SD DD16 mid-chassis exhaust configura-tion begins summer 2014.

“When adding options

such as the mid-chassis exhaust, we work close-ly with truck equipment manufacturers to develop flexible solutions that sim-plify the upfitting process to get the trucks to work as soon as possible,” said Mary Aufdemberg, Direc-tor of Product Marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “Our new severe duty options further contribute to the durability and performance our vocational customers require on the road and off.”

In addition to the 122SD twin steer, Freightliner SD trucks on view include:• A versatile 108SD, fea-

turing a Valew Truck Bodies fuel and lube body;

• A tough and efficient 114SD featuring a Car-gotec knuckleboom roof-ing crane;

KNIGHT TRAILER SALES INC.

Government is provid-ing $4.5 million to move heavy-duty transporta-tion programs offered by BC Institute of Technol-ogy (BCIT) and Vancouver Community College (VCC) into a new Motive Power Centre.

Motive power programs train heavy-duty mechan-ics, transport trailer me-chanics, diesel mechanics, commercial transportation mechanics, railway con-ductors and forklift opera-tors.

“Around 43 per cent of the one million jobs ex-pected to open by 2020 will require trades or technical training,” said Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk. “Co-locating two ex-isting heavy-duty transpor-tation programs into one centre will benefit students, industry and employers.”

The new Motive Power Centre will create opportu-nities to develop synergies between the two post-sec-ondary institutions as well as with prospective em-ployers, while also provid-ing the physical space and opportunity for industry to be present in the centre.

“The new motive power centre will have the space necessary to facilitate part-nerships with industry giving students the most relevant current training opportunities possible,” said Minister of Jobs, Tour-ism and Skills Training and

Minister Responsible for Labour Shirley Bond. “To ensure our students are first in line for the thou-sands of jobs available now and opening up in the future it is critical that we align training with the jobs that are in demand.”

When the Motive Power Centre opens to students in September 2014, it will focus on collaboration, in-novation, and the efficient use of equipment and re-sources. At 142,000-square-feet, the facility sets a solid foundation for partnership opportunities with indus-try.

The centre will continue to train and graduate stu-dents in many industries that are identified as a pri-ority in the BC Jobs Plan. This includes mining, oil and gas, shipbuilding, aerospace and the LNG sector.

An estimated 13,000 people in B.C. are em-ployed in the field of heavy-duty commercial transportation, and as die-sel and transport trailer technicians. BCIT and VCC produce 650 graduates an-nually – more than half of the heavy-duty transporta-tion graduates entering the province’s workforce each year.

“The Annacis Island centre has many benefits for students,” said BCIT President Kathy Kinloch. “Our students will have

better teaching facilities, learning and laboratory spaces, and the opportuni-ty to connect with industry. This will enable them to be even more employable and to connect with the govern-ment’s job plan.”

“This new centre speaks to the value of collabora-tion and partnership within the post-secondary sector,” said VCC Interim President Doug Callbeck. “The new facility will give our stu-dents the opportunity to learn in a state-of-the-art training environment, gain-ing the hands-on skills and experience they need for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Once transported to the site in mid-2014, a signature piece of the An-nacis Island centre will be the 140-ton, five-metre-tall Man Engine. Donated by Man Diesel and Turbo Canada and valued at $1.25-million, the engine will be a cornerstone of training curriculum within marine, motive power and power engineering at BCIT. The engine will provide relevant, hands-on op-portunities for heavy-duty mechanics across several industry sectors.

The $4.5 million in one-time funding is being providing by the Ministry of Advanced Education to cover moving and transi-tion costs.

The relocation of the BCIT programs from their current location at Great Northern Way will make way for the new campus of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Construc-tion of the new campus is slated for fall 2014. b

With decades of expe-rience in remanufacturing commercial vehicle parts such as compressors, air dryers, valves, and brake shoes, Bendix Commer-cial Vehicle Systems LLC recognizes the value that remanufactured parts can bring to fleets and trucks. As part of its Bendix Tech Tips series, Bendix experts offer advice on choosing, inspecting, and installing remanufactured parts. Reman versus Rebuild

“Selecting quality re-manufactured parts be-gins with the right sourc-ing – knowing what to look for, and knowing what questions to ask the part supplier,” said Henry

Foxx, Bendix Director of Remanufactured Prod-ucts. “And among the first and most crucial things to learn is whether you’re dealing with a true parts remanufacturer or a re-builder.” There’s a vast difference between the two

When a rebuilder dis-assembles the core of a part for reuse – an air compressor, for instance – they don’t necessarily replace the components of that product with new ones or bring the prod-uct back to its Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) performance level. Rebuilders may simply clean or repaint compo-

nents, or replace them with inferior versions since they may not have full access to OEM-quality components such as pis-tons, connecting rods, or crankshafts.

Remanufacturing, on the other hand, always in-volves either replacing or repairing a core’s compo-nents to bring the part up to OEM specs. Addition-ally, some components – referred to as wear components – are always replaced with new ver-sions during remanufac-turing. Wear components such as gaskets, washers, and O-rings are never re-used by a true remanufac-turer. Questions to Ask

When developing a strategy to use remanu-factured parts in your op-eration, it’s vital for fleet managers to arm them-selves with as much infor-mation as possible. Here are four questions you must ask of any potential remanufacturing partner: •Do they replace non-

salvageable or irrepa-rable components with new?

•Do they replace wear components 100 per-cent of the time?

•What type of tests do

they conduct to validate the performance of their parts?

•How do they support the product through warranties and/or ser-vice needs? Those latter questions

will help you address the post-sale concerns of de-pendable parts and reli-able technical support.

The definitive gauge of any remanufactured part is how it performs once it’s off the assembly line and on the vehicle. Ben-dix, for example, conducts end-of-line testing on its remanufactured parts, while many rebuilders can only offer limited test-ing.

A strong post-sales support system is another important consideration, from the length of war-ranty coverage to the geographic availability of parts and service loca-tions. Tips for Technicians

Selecting the proper remanufacturer is just the beginning. Fleets and drivers rely on skilled technicians for quality in-spection and installation of remanufactured parts.

From a true remanu-facturer, technicians should expect a part that will perform as well as the one that was originally on the truck and has been updated, if necessary, to the latest specifications. They should also expect parts that come ready for a complete installation,

including any necessary wear components.

Bendix offers the fol-lowing tips for reference during inspection and in-stallation of remanufac-tured parts: •Air compressors – Have

the flanges been refin-ished to a flat, smooth surface? Are there new gaskets provided for the installation?

•Brake shoes – Inspect the friction used for relining: has it been certified for Reduced Stopping Distance com-pliance, or has the shoe been fitted with a low cost, lower-performing substitute? Bendix RSD shoes feature a warning label to educate custom-ers about proper friction selection to maintain RSD compliance.

•Electronics (such as ra-dar units) – Ensure the operating software has received the latest OEM updates. By partnering with a

skilled, supportive, and established remanufactur-er, fleets, technicians, and drivers can maintain full confidence in high-qual-ity alternatives to new parts, saving themselves replacement costs and ex-tending vehicle life.

Bendix provides com-mercial fleets, techni-cians, and drivers with the tools they need to ensure safe operation through as-sessment, maintenance, and repair. The Bendix On-Line Brake School at

www.brake-school.com provides access to the company’s knowledge database and technical resources on all aspects of electronics and air brake maintenance and product education. The Bendix Brake Training School, one of the industry’s lon-gest-running training pro-grams, has educated more than 250,000 students since its founding more than 50 years ago. Among other tools, the company offers field-tested sales and service professionals; a 100 percent ASE-certi-fied field technical sup-port team; and the Bendix Tech Team (at 1-800-AIR-BRAKE), an expert techni-cal support group provid-ing service advice, brake system troubleshooting, and product training. About the Bendix Tech Tips Series

Bendix, the North American leader in the development and manu-facture of leading-edge active safety and brak-ing system technologies, is committed to helping keep commercial ve-hicles on the road and in good working condi-tion. The Bendix Tech Tips series addresses common commercial ve-hicle maintenance ques-tions and issues con-cerning the total range of components found within foundation and air brake systems, as well as advanced safety systems. b

Mack Trucks recent-ly unveiled a bold new brand identity during the 2014 CONEXPO-CON/AGG event in Las Vegas. The updated ex-pression of the brand sends a strong message about the significant changes in the Mack Trucks organization, its products and customer support solutions.

A central element of the new brand expres-sion is a sleeker, more modern logo, featuring the iconic Mack Bulldog symbol poised confi-dently above the Mack word mark, shining a light on elements that have always been core to the brand and pres-ent on the product. At the same time, the new mark is an expression of Mack’s present-day, for-ward-thinking approach to the heavy-duty truck industry and customer.

Mack’s purpose from day one has been to de-sign products and ser-vices that enable and strengthen the essential bond between man and machine – to understand customers’ needs and equip them to overcome the challenges they face on a daily basis. That pur-pose was evident even before the tenacious per-formance of the Mack AC model in the trenches of World War I led British soldiers to give Mack its bulldog nickname. It’s a purpose that remains very much alive today. A new tagline, Born Ready, also unveiled at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, at once recognizes Mack’s long-standing role as a brand that can be count-ed on when things mat-ter most, and celebrates that same character trait in the people Mack ad-mires and does business

with every day. “We’re extremely

proud of our 114-year legacy as the American truck you can count on,” said Stephen Roy, President, Mack Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “It gives us credibility in forging a very bright future for Mack, our dealers and our customers. We be-lieve the refresh of our brand embodies what we’ve stood for in the past and continue to stand for today. We’re confident and passion-ate about our trucks and our customers. We have a great history, great momentum and the conviction that our best days are ahead of us. The brand work we’re rolling out here in Las Vegas clearly commu-nicates the strong posi-tion Mack holds today.”

Since 2010, $64 mil-lion has been invested in the Hagerstown, Md. plant that produces all Mack engines and trans-missions. Nearly $20 million has been invest-ed over the same period in the Macungie, Pa. plant where all Mack trucks for North Amer-ica and export are built. In 2012, $10 million was dedicated to the ex-pansion of the technical center in Greensboro, N.C., the site of Mack product design, devel-opment and testing.

Millions of dollars have also been put into R&D, resulting in game-changing new products and services like the Mack mDRIVE auto-mated manual trans-mission, Mack mRIDE spring suspension and Mack GuardDog Con-nect, an integrated con-nected vehicle solution that proactively increas-es uptime.

Mack dealers have also been investing, with more than $300 million dedicated to new facilities, additional ser-

vice bays, more service and parts employees, expanded hours of ser-vice, and more Master Technicians since 2010.

“We’ve got a very solid foundation,” said John Walsh, Mack Vice Presi-dent of Marketing. “It’s time we told our story in a way that captures both the essence of the brand—what has always made Mack great—as well as all of the exciting things hap-pening with Mack today. That’s really what the new work we’re debuting today is all about.” b

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, the North American leader in the development and man-ufacture of leading-edge active safety and brak-ing system technologies, has achieved a 96 percent waste diversion rate as a result of its ongoing efforts to operate in environmen-tally responsible and inno-vative ways. The progress reflects the company’s con-tinued focus on sustain-ability, which also includes new internal awareness ef-forts and further pursuit of independent external vali-dation.

“As recently as 2008, our waste diversion rate was 52 percent,” noted Maria Gutierrez, Bendix Director of Sustainability Management. “Just 5 years later, in 2013, less than 4 percent of our waste was sent to landfills. It’s a direct result of a company-wide commitment to recycling and remanufacturing, and

continuous work toward our goal of ‘zero waste to landfill’ operations.”

Bendix diverted more than 9,500 tons of waste, which included recy-cling more than 9,240 tons of material last year – waste that once would have gone into landfills. Bendix has driven waste diversion through recy-cling programs for basic materials, such as card-board, wood, plastic, and metal. It has done so at its headquarters in Elyria, Ohio, and its manufac-turing plants in Bowling Green, Ky.; Huntington, Ind.; and Acuña, Mexico. The company has found other recycling channels as well: Bendix sends discarded desiccant from its recycled air dryers to a company that reclaims the waste material for use in producing cement.

Over the last 5 years, Bendix has reduced over 53 percent of material

sent to landfills and, as a result, prevented an esti-mated 15 million pounds from being disposed in this way every year.

Bendix also reduces its environmental impact through its remanufactur-ing efforts, dismantling parts such as compres-sors, air dryers, valves, and brake shoes after their initial use, salvag-ing key components, and reassembling them with salvaged (when applica-ble) and new components to meet current specifica-tions. This efficient form of recycling reduces the carbon footprint associat-ed with the fabrication of new parts by 80 percent.

In September 2013, Bendix created a Corpo-rate Responsibility and Sustainability depart-ment, naming Gutierrez as its leader. The de-partment’s goals include identifying the oppor-tunities and risks of so-

cial and environmental changes, reinforcing and refining the company’s long-term sustainability strategy, and integrating it into Bendix’s entire value chain.

To help employees and customers under-stand the environmental significance and impact of Bendix’s waste diver-sion achievements, the company is working to meet standards set by global independent safe-ty science company UL.

UL offers three land-

fill waste diversion claim validations: Landfill Diversion Rate, which validates claims of 80 percent and up; Virtu-ally Zero Waste to Land-fill, reserved for facilities achieving a diversion rate of 98 percent or higher; and Zero Waste to Landfill, a waste di-version rate of 100 per-cent.

In 2013, Bendix’s Acuña III plant reached a diversion rate of 99 per-cent, making it eligible to apply for Virtually Zero

Waste to Landfill classi-fication.

“Being environmen-tally conscious is more than just an idea or a solid business strategy at Bendix,” Gutierrez said. “The decisions we make and the improvements we strive for every day have a positive, direct impact in the communities where we operate and which our employees call home. And the changes we implement now can make all the dif-ference in the future of our shared planet.” b

Bendix Recycling Drives 96 Percent Waste Diversion

Bendix diverted more than 9,500 tons of waste, which included recycling more than 9,240 tons of material last year.

Winter warriors will have a tough new tool in their arsenal against Moth-er Nature with Ford’s new snow plow prep option, available on the all-new 2015 F-150. Ford is expect-ed to be the only manufac-turer to offer a light-duty snow plow prep option across all cab configura-tions – Regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew (when properly equipped. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR).

When snow plow mode is activated via the push of a button, the vehicle tem-porarily turns off nones-sential features to provide dedicated power for the plow.

The option pack-age requires the truck be equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine and four-wheel drive, and is available across XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels.

“The new 2015 F-150 is the toughest F-150 ever, and by using more high-

strength steel in its frame and advanced materials in the body, we’ve made the new truck up to 700 pounds lighter,” said Eric Peterson, Ford F-150 Mar-keting Manager. “This leads to more capability and better handling, which is exactly what you’d want for plowing. Adding a snow plow prep kit to our lineup helps ensure our customers have even more tools at their disposal to get the job done.”

Upon taking delivery of a new F-150 with the snow plow prep option, owners will need to take their truck to a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to purchase and install the plow hardware. The maximum light-duty plow weight will be over 450 pounds.

Pricing for the snow plow prep option, exclud-ing the plow, will be an-nounced later this year. The all-new 2015 F-150 will arrive in dealerships at the end of 2014. b

HELP Inc. (HELP) the non-profit, public-private partnership dedi-cated to motor carrier safety and efficiency, has again selected Xerox as its vendor partner for technology solutions, site operations and cus-tomer service for PrePass – its advanced Automat-ed Vehicle Identification (AVI) technology – and other truck safety and commercial enforcement tools.

HELP and the Com-mercial Vehicle Opera-tions Division acquired by Xerox in 2009 have partnered in the trans-portation field for near-ly two decades.

PrePass is North America’s largest truck safety e-screening and pre-clearance network, with more than 300 operational sites in 31 states and several new sites in various stages of planning and construc-tion. PrePass reached an enrolment mile-

stone of 461,974 quali-fied trucks from nearly 37,000 fleets by the end of 2013, making it the largest deployment of vehic le - to - in f ras t ruc-ture (V2I) technology in the U.S. today.

“With an abundance of technology choices and vendors available today, HELP’s board of directors voted over-whelmingly to renew its contractual arrangement with Xerox,” said Kar-en Rasmussen, HELP’s president and CEO. “The board and I have complete confidence in Xerox’s technology leadership and superior customer service, both for our current offerings and in the years ahead.”

“Xerox values its rela-tionship with HELP Inc., the oldest, most suc-cessful transportation public-private partner-ship in North America,” said Rich Bastan, Group President, Americas Commercial and State

Government Transpor-tation for Xerox. “The new agreement allows both organizations to continue our tradition of providing innovative, world-class technology tools to enable HELP’s state agency partners and motor carrier cus-tomers to operate more efficiently.”

PrePass saves the trucking industry time, fuel and money, en-abling qualified motor carriers to electroni-cally comply with state and federal safety, weight, and credential requirements by elimi-nating the need to stop at equipped weigh sta-tions. According to the U.S. Environmental Pro-tection Agency, in the 16 years that HELP has been collecting bypass data, PrePass has also reduced truck emissions by 507,326 metric tons.

HELP and Xerox also of-fer electronic pre-payment of truck tolls on 78 differ-ent toll roads, turnpikes, tunnels and bridges in 15 different states through the PrePass Plus system, with expansion of the service to several new facilities to be announced soon. b

HELP Inc. Announces New Contract With Xerox

Through the deepest days of winter, Ford Motor Company remains focused on seeing the light.

With Ford’s Visual Per-formance Evaluation Lab – known internally as the Lighting Lab – engineers re-create daylight to work to reduce sun glare on ve-hicle controls and instru-ment panels.

The high-performance Lighting Lab uses a plan-etarium-like dome to rep-licate sunlight conditions from dawn to dusk, simu-lating the phases of the earth’s revolution around the sun. Additional lights lining the perimeter of the dome can be adjusted to simulate the effects of weather conditions.

The designers behind the 2015 Ford Mustang used the Lighting Lab to ensure the car’s newly available aluminum dash panel does not cause glare to drivers under a variety of conditions, and that the instruments found in Mus-tang’s optional gauge pack

are always legible.“With the Lighting Lab,

we can ensure that the first time a buyer sits in the 2015 Ford Mustang, that person will be able to see the interior as the designers originally envisioned it – in the best light possible,” said Mahendra Dassanay-ake, Ford lighting techni-cal specialist. “Whether the car is parked outside or is sitting on an auto show floor, whether it is a bright, sunny day, or overcast and snowing, the materials and controls in the Mus-tang will be both visually satisfying and highly func-tional.”

To conduct an evalua-tion of switches, clusters, climate controls, naviga-tion systems, radios or en-tertainment systems, the car or the individual com-ponent is first placed in the middle of a large circular space. A switch is then flipped to power on four 1,500-watt lights mounted on a moveable steel arm.

By physically pushing

the arm to specific points around the circle’s edge, and adjusting the spotlights and floodlights in the ceil-ing, the Lighting Lab can simulate light conditions at every time of day, while the additional lighting in the dome is used to vary weather conditions from bright sun to full cloud cover.

These tools allow Ford engineers to re-create any kind of lighting condition found anywhere in the world when designing new vehicles, which is critical to the development of global products such as the 2014 Ford Fiesta. b

In response to the grow-ing demand for Kinedyne’s Kaptive Beam System, Kinedyne has produced a free training video for their customers outlining the best-use tips and com-mon misuses. The eleven-minute training video will be available to all new and existing Kaptive Beam cus-tomers by special request made to Kinedyne’s Na-tional Product Manager - Engineered Solutions, Scott Frazier. Interested custom-ers can contact Scott Fra-zier through Kinedyne’s customer service line at 800-848-6057 or [email protected].

“As the trucking indus-try evolves with new chal-lenges such as the recent HOS regulations, support-ive tools to maximize cargo space, like Kaptive Beam, are increasingly impor-tant,” says Paul Wolford, VP of Sales and Marketing at Kinedyne. “This new video shares the learnings we have acquired from our Solutions Team and fleet customers over the years so that everyone can en-sure they are utilizing their Kaptive Beam System to its best ability.”

The Kaptive Beam Training Video includes:• Components of the Kap-

tive Beam System: A breakdown of all the parts of the Kaptive Beam System

• Proper and Safe Use of the Decking System: In-cluding best use tips for ease and common errors to avoid

• How to Safely and Effec-tively Load the Kaptive Beam Trailer: Covering examples of single and double track systems, how to secure oddly shaped pieces, and rec-ommendations on load-ing order

• General Maintenance

of the Decking System: Featuring quick mainte-nance steps that can be completed on the road and recommendations on replacement parts to have on hand For more information

on the Kinedyne Kap-tive Beam System and to view the Sales Video visit: http://tiny.cc/KinedyneVideoLibraryWhy Kaptive Beam?

In the case of your trail-ers, you can gain a signifi-cant competitive advan-tage with a fast, simple, and economical way to

maximize trailer cube and increase load factor. The solution, which allows you to achieve that, is the Kinedyne Kaptive Beam System. This is a deck-ing system with a series of integrated, adjustable-height deck beams, spaced throughout the trailer, which can be used to cre-ate customized load decks. Because it’s built into the trailer, the decking system vastly reduces the time and effort needed to build a load deck – increasing pro-ductivity, while giving you the flexibility to load your

customer’s freight safely and securely. Why Kinedyne?

Kinedyne Corporations’ commitment to the suc-cess of our customers is our primary focus, and the support before, during and after their purchase of our Kaptive Beam System is critical. Kinedyne will work with our customers to de-termine the best system for their application. We also offer a full corporate train-ing program that will help them realize the full benefit and return on their invest-ment. b
