If something seems too good to be true, it often is, but sometimes people only see what they want to see. Then, when the honeymoon is over, the truth comes into focus. Business choices and de-cisions require a sober mind and a strong grip on emotions. If some-one wants something too much, and if they’ve con-vinced themselves they are not walking away, too often critical terms are overlooked and outcomes become disastrous.

My wife and I consid-ered selling a couple of our ATV’s. Our kids are growing up and the quads were just sitting around too much. We decided to sell them using Kijiji, since my wife does most of her shopping through the site anyway (we are loyal customers). We took a few pictures, decided on

listing them for about 10-15% below local market price, and then posted our ad.

After a couple days we were emailed by someone who seemed interested. In fact, they seemed very desperate, like there was some sort of emergency. They asked a little about the ATVs’ history and we e-mailed back. They re-sponded with their accep-tance and said they would take them both but would like to see them first. I e-mailed my availability.

The reply was a little shocking. They were lo-cated 2200 miles from my home (so how then were they planning on seeing them?). They stated they would pay me exactly what I wanted and would make arrangements to have the ATVs couriered after I got confirmation of a Pay Pal deposit into my

account.The situation was a

simple business transac-tion that appeared nor-mal. Offer to purchase, arrangements for pay-ment and pickup, piece of cake. If I was desperate to sell them I wouldn’t have thought any further. But let’s take a closer look at the details and see if what was being said and of-fered made logical sense.

Shipping two ATVs 2200 miles across Canada was not going to be cheap. In fact, they would end up adding a minimum of 35% to the purchase price (probably closer to 50%). The end cost to the pur-chaser would be 125+% of local market price.

Market price differs across Canada. Many people buy in one loca-tion and sell in another because price can differ a lot geographically. As an example, Albertans gener-ally pay more for things than do those in the Mari-times. So why would the buyer agree to purchase an ATV above their local cost, then arrange ship-ping on top? It defies busi-ness and money logic.

Making sound busi-ness decisions sometimes

requires developing “spi-der sense”, the ability to sense danger without any-thing being visible. When the spider sense starts tingling, stop what you are doing and take a close look at your surrounding situation.

Every business deci-sion requires trust. The key, however, is verify-ing the accuracy of claims and having recourse if the facts turn out to be ex-tremely off.

Cheques are legal doc-uments that can be taken to court and enforced. Even if a cheque had a stop payment assigned to it, it does not stop the validity of the original intent (transfer of funds from a specific entity to the recipient). A cheque retains the power of legal recourse. Electronic trans-fers do not retain nearly as much legal recourse as our electronic society thinks.

Pay Pal, in the minds of many, is perceived to have no legal difference than a cheque. But it can. Pay Pal account names and tracking features (of-ten times international) are not nearly as accessi-ble as a local cheque with

a printed address and sig-nature on it. Finally, how are you going to find the owner of the Pay Pal ac-count when they are 2200 miles away (if that part of the story was even true)?

This story is not writ-ten to warn people of Pay Pal scams. It’s designed to inspire people to take logi-cal inventory of the busi-ness choices they make.

If I would have been desperate to sell the quads, urgently need-ing the cash, I may have been tempted to think others are desperate enough to overpay for the ATVs, blindly overlook-ing simple common sense logic. If I was desperate, I wouldn’t have considered questioning the means of payment and its legal dif-ficulties. Desperate people convince themselves that desperate choices are ac-tually reasonable.

Too much emotion should not be a part in business decisions.

When operators are looking to move their truck, too often they start the process in desperate situations, where patience may not even be an op-tion. They end up settling for something they didn’t

really want, because they didn’t really have the time to make an educated de-cision. They retained too much blind faith, and drank too much coffee.

Heaven and hell are in the details.

By the way, a quick internet search confirmed my suspicions. There are many Pay Pal scams go-ing around (google: Pay Pal scams). This scam has nothing to do with Pay Pal, the scammers are only trying to find real Pay Pal and bank account information and get gull-ible people to send THEM money. Apparently not all scams come from over-seas, and these scammers have a lot of nerve; they are bold liars. b

Less than seven years af-ter introducing its ground-breaking Detroit DD15 engine, Detroit Diesel Cor-poration (Detroit) recently marked the production of its 250,000th DD Series engine. The DD Series en-gines – which also includes the Detroit DD13 Detroit DD15 TC and Detroit DD16 engines – feature superior performance and power.

“When we unveiled our new heavy-duty engine platform in 2007, we antici-pated our customers would benefit from greater effi-

ciency and uptime,” said Brad Williamson, Man-ager, Engine and Compo-nent Marketing for Daim-ler Trucks North America. “The achievements of our engines – most recently combining with the Cas-cadia Evolution to deliver a 7 percent improvement in fuel economy – have ex-ceeded expectations.”

Jointly developed by Daimler Trucks in Germa-ny, Japan and the United States and featuring more than 90 percent globally shared parts, the DD Series

heavy duty engine platform was the largest investment ever made in product de-velopment by an engine manufacturer.

“The DD Series engines were well-received by the market, outperforming the Series 60 engine in just the first year,” said Wil-liamson. “Our customers embraced the products and performance benefits the engines delivered.”Powering the Road: Advanced Technologies

All DD Series engines feature a robust design

with the exclusive Ampli-fied Common Rail System (ACRS), which works in combination with Detroit DDEC electronic engine controls to benefit fuel con-sumption while reducing noise and vibration.

“The DD Series lowers the real cost of ownership for our customers,” said Williamson. “Our engi-neers implemented indus-try-first technologies that set the stage for ongoing achievements.”

These achievements in-clude using BlueTec SCR emissions technology, in-troduced to meet EPA 2010 emissions standards and achieving Greenhouse Gas 2014 (GHG14) regulations a full year ahead of the mandate for certification.

“Our emissions solu-tions not only contribute to reducing pollutants, but also provide enhanced re-liability, durability and ef-ficiency,” said Williamson.Integrating Solutions

With the launch of the new integrated Detroit Pow-ertrain, Detroit engines are poised to deliver even better results for customers.

“The DD15 kicked off an important era of devel-opment and innovation for Detroit, and the integrated Powertrain marks the cul-mination of our achieve-ments,” said Williamson. “The DD15 is now our flag-ship product, and it serves as the heart of our solu-tions.”

The integrated De-troit Powertrain has the DD15 engine with a new downsped rating of 400hp

and 1750 lb/ft. Together with the Detroit DT12 transmission and Detroit axles, the Powertrain pro-vides seamless component communication. The Detroit Difference

All Detroit engines are

manufactured at the Detroit headquarters in Redford, Mich. Since its opening in 1938, Detroit has built more than five million en-gines at the three million-square-foot plant. Over the

More than one in three medium and heavy duty commercial trucks regis-tered in the U.S. are now equipped with newer, cleaner emissions-free engines.

As reported by Heavy Duty Trucking, new data compiled by IHS Automotive for the Die-sel Technology Forum, shows 2.9 million of the nation’s 8.8 million trucks are now powered by newer model, clean diesels.

“Because more than 95% of all heavy-duty trucks are diesel-pow-ered it is significant that more than one-third of these trucks are near-zero emission vehicles,” says Allen Schaeffer, Ex-ecutive Director of the Diesel Technology Fo-rum. “Diesel trucks are literally the driving force behind goods movement in the U.S. and world-wide economies, so the fact that the clean die-sel fleet is increasing is

good news for improved fuel efficiency and the environment. These new trucks are so clean that it now takes more than 60 of today’s clean diesel trucks to equal the emis-sions from a single 1988 truck.”

The new data in-cludes total registration information on Class 3-8 trucks from 2007 through 2013.

The new clean diesel technology has reduced emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses by 99% for nitro-gen oxides (NOx) and 98% for particulate emis-sions (PM).

“Last year was the fifth consecutive year of in-creased penetration of the new clean diesel trucks in the fleet, reflecting the continuing confidence that American truckers have in the performance and fuel efficiency im-provements of new tech-nology diesel engines,” Schaeffer says. b

Truck driving is a skilled occupation that should not be lumped in with burger flippers and other low wage/low skill jobs in or-der for the industry’s jobs strategy to work.

That’s the over-riding comment from the Cana-dian Trucking Alliance (CTA) in the wake of changes to the controver-sial Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) announced recently by fed-eral employment minister Jason Kenney.

“In an industry as frag-mented and diverse as trucking, it’s not surprising there are varying opinions on the TFWP,” says CTA President David Bradley. “Obviously, those compa-nies that utilize the pro-gram in order to fill truck driver vacancies will be im-pacted, whereas those who do not are less concerned.”

According to the min-ister, the changes are de-signed to encourage Cana-dian businesses to fill job vacancies with Canadians, reduce the number of for-eign workers in Canada un-der the program and put a stop to abuses. The minis-ter says that scrapping the program, at least for low wage occupations, remains on the table.

Regardless of whether a company uses the TFWP or not, Bradley says em-ploying Canadians is al-ways paramount and there is a very clear industry consensus that truck driv-ing should be considered a skilled occupation. That fact that it isn’t, says CTA, is a key impediment to ad-dressing the driver short-age, which could reach 33,000 in the for-hire truck-ing sector by 2020, ac-cording to the Conference

Board of Canada. Bradley contends

trucking companies who use the TFWP do not do so to expand their busi-nesses. “Even prior to the announced changes the program was con-sidered by most to be too cumbersome and restrictive for anything other than a temporary, stop-gap measure to fill unseated trucks when a company is unable to fill those positions with qualified Canadians.”

“The TFWP is what it is,” he says. “It’s not an ideal program, nor is it a solution to the shortage of qualified truck drivers. But it’s all that is available to fill some seats on a tem-porary basis for those who choose to use it.”

He says CTA would much rather work with the federal and provincial governments to fulfill the industry’s need for quali-fied Canadian transport op-erators, or where that is not possible, with qualified im-migrant drivers on a path to citizenship. b

Recognizing Truck Driving As Skilled Occupation Key To Jobs Strategy

Mack Trucks further strengthened its service and support network in Canada with the opening of new facilities in Saskatche-wan and Quebec.

“Mack’s customers reap the benefits of maximum ve-hicle uptime and increased ROI because of the ongoing investments throughout our dealer network,” said Ste-phen Roy, President, Mack Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “Mack is committed to delivering products, services and sup-port that we’re confident provide unparalleled cus-tomer value, and our dealers live this commitment every day.”Redhead Equipment — Regina, Saskatchewan

Redhead Equipment re-cently opened the doors to its new Regina, Saskatch-ewan location between Em-erald Park and the City of Regina on Highway 1 East. Redhead Equipment, which also retails and services trail-ers and construction equip-ment, built the new 117,000 square-foot facility to stream-line their operations and bet-ter serve the growing needs of their diverse customer

base. The truck service cen-tre, staffed by 15 Mack tech-nicians, nine of whom are Mack Master Technicians, features 27 service bays, in-cluding wash and welding bays, a lube pit, overhead crane and truck lifting sys-tem. The location houses an extensive parts inventory in its 30,000 square-foot parts warehouse and operates sev-en service trucks to provide support at customer loca-tions and jobsites.Mack Laval — Laval, Quebec

Mack also enhanced its presence in Quebec with the opening of Mack Laval near Montreal. The dealership was previously based in An-jou, Quebec and known as Camions Lourds de Mon-treal. Moving to the Laval facility will help ensure even greater customer service and easy access from major routes AR-440 and AR-25. The 19,000 square-foot facil-ity provides 14 service bays manned by 14 technicians and a 3,500 square-foot parts warehouse, overhead crane, lube pit and high-tech lube system. The facility is equipped to service alterna-tive fuel vehicles. Located

on a 138,000 square-foot lot, Mack Laval provides ample room for trailers and is mon-itored by an advanced cam-era system to help protect customers’ assets.Ongoing Mack Dealer Investments

Since 2010, Mack deal-ers have invested $380 mil-lion, leading to a:• 35 percent increase in

bay capacity;• 162 percent increase in

Mack Master Techni-cians;

• 69 percent increase in spare parts availability;

• 62 percent increase in hours available for ser-vice; and

• 82 percent increase in parts department em-ployees.Mack’s extensive ser-

vice and support network of more than 460 Mack dealer locations and 15,000 additional service provid-ers in North America is vi-tal to the success of Mack’s aftermarket support.

The ongoing invest-ments to expand service and support capabilities further the effectiveness of Mack’s GuardDog Connect telematics-based solution, which quickly diagnoses potential issues, proac-tively schedules repairs and confirms that required parts are in stock and ready to install, all while the truck is still on the job. b

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has launched Pinnacle Truck Parts, a dynamic e-com-merce platform that facili-tates transactions between customers and DTNA’s parts and service network. A new online parts order-ing tool created to deliver uptime by simplifying and expediting the parts order-ing process, Pinnacle Truck Parts is the latest addition to a suite of services of-fered under DTNA’s Pin-nacle Fleet Solutions pro-gram.

Through this innova-tive, network-wide e-com-merce solution, customers now have visibility to parts

availability and pricing at their local authorized DTNA retail outlet, and Daimler inventory at parts distribution centres nation-wide. The robust inven-tory system will include access to over 100,000 SKUs, which can be pur-chased online – anytime, anywhere. After purchase, customers will have the op-tion to immediately print a single invoice for the pur-chase of all of their parts.

“Daimler Trucks North America is committed to providing the most inno-vative tools to improve the ease of doing business. Pinnacle Truck Parts was designed to do just that by

providing customers with a fast, reliable and simple so-lution for ordering parts,” explains Pam Perez, E-Commerce Project Manag-er at Daimler Trucks North America. “This platform is the first in the industry to provide this depth of functionality. By utilizing the state-of-the-art cross-reference parts database on PinnacleTruckParts.com, customers will save time and money through-out the parts procurement process.”

The initial roll-out and implementation of Pin-nacle Truck Parts platform with authorized DTNA re-tail outlets began in June and is targeted for comple-tion by the end of Febru-ary, 2015.

Daimler Launches Innovative Parts E-Commerce Platform

A healthier trucking industry has reflected extremely tight capacity in the truckload sector, but there may be a pe-riod of modest relief in sight, according to new-ly released report from the freight forecasting firm FTR.

“There is a possibil-ity for some relief of the tight truckload capac-ity over the next few months if freight growth slows as expected in the

second quarter,” the group said in a release. “The stressed supply situation of today is caused, primarily, by regulatory drag on ship-ping capacity along with the winter disruptions.”

Although truck-ing capacity will stay tight throughout 2014, “it looks like much of the supply-and-de-mand balance is com-ing back down to a more ‘normal’ level

as shippers are finish-ing their spring freight season and the back-log of loads caused by the winter weather has largely subsided.”

Jonathan Starks, FTR’s Director of Trans-portation Analysis, not-ed ‘normal’ remains a relative term, since the industry continues to be operating at much high-er levels of utilization than in the past.

“Recent data shows a strong uptick in eco-nomic activity, but it will be hard to know if we are merely play-ing catch-up from a bad first quarter or if there is some real sustained growth occurring.” b

The BC Trucking As-sociation (BCTA) pre-dicts that most trucking companies are unlikely to allow higher speeds among their fleets and will stick to current best practices regarding safe-ty and fuel efficiency de-spite changes to posted speed limits announced by the Ministry of Trans-portation and Infrastruc-ture as a result of its Ru-ral Highway Safety and Speed Review.

Louise Yako, BCTA President & CEO, notes that these trucking com-panies compete by of-fering high standards for service and efficiency that incorporate safety measures into day-to-day practices. Many cultivate a “safety culture” for their employees and customers by, for example, adopting speed policies and/or us-ing engine speed control devices.

“When we surveyed our truck and motor coach members regard-ing the speed review,

they indicated there was no appetite for higher speed limits,” Ms. Yako says. “Carrying freight or passengers from one place to another quickly is important, but getting them there safely is more important. For the road transportation industry, efficiency is about results, factoring in the safety of drivers and others, what they’re carrying, and their equipment.”

Trucking companies are also aware that operating at higher speeds means greater fuel consumption and more greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, Natural Resources Canada esti-mates that a heavy com-mercial vehicle travelling at 120 km/h can consume up to 39 percent more fuel than if it were travelling at 90 km/h, with an accom-panying increase in emis-sions.

Although BCTA recog-nizes that the provincial government has a high regard for road safety and the environment,

the association opposed increasing speed lim-its based on concerns expressed by members about increased crash risk when commercial and passenger vehicles are travelling at differ-ent speeds and increased stopping distances at higher speeds, especially in poor road conditions.

For example, the stop-ping distance for a load-ed tractor-trailer combi-nation travelling on dry pavement at 105 km/h is 68 percent higher than at 90 km/h, which means it will take 180 metres to come to a stop, com-pared to 107. Especially as speed limits increase, other drivers need to take care not to do any-thing that might require a truck to take evasive action or make an emer-gency stop.

With higher speed lim-its, driving to conditions becomes even more im-portant. BCTA therefore welcomes the ministry’s plan to pilot variable

speed signs for better guidance in severe winter conditions on high-vol-ume routes, including the Coquihalla between Hope and the old toll booth and Highway 1 between Si-camous and Revelstoke. Commercial vehicles run according to schedules that require them to oper-ate year-round on these routes, often in difficult driving conditions.

“Safety is our top pri-ority,” says Ms. Yako. “We understand that in deciding to increase speed limits on selected rural highways, the ministry carefully considered safe-ty performance, current travel speeds, road engi-neering and comments from the public. But, people can make mistakes and use poor judgment. To ensure everyone stays safe, drivers of passenger cars need to understand how to share the road with heavy commercial vehicles.”

As the new speed limits come into force, BCTA en-courages all drivers to drive with care, reduce their speeds in wet and winter conditions, and always give commercial vehicles room to operate safely. b

Higher Speed Limits On BC Highways Means Greater Need For Driving With Care Near Commercial Vehicles

When it comes to autono-mous, self-steering vehicles, most of the public attention has been focused on the Goggle car and heavy ap-plications in the mining and national defense sectors.

But Daimler Trucks is one commercial truck man-ufacturer to unveil its self-driving “truck of the future. The company stated the vehicle is a “quantum leap in road freight transport in terms of safety, efficiency and connectivity.”

The highway test pi-lot for the technologically advanced vehicle will be launched as early as 2025 “if conditions permit,” Daimler said.

“The truck of the future is a Mercedes-Benz that drives itself,” said Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, the member of Daimler’s Board of Manage-ment Responsible for Daim-ler Trucks and Buses.

The truck is equipped with the “extremely intel-ligent” Highway Pilot as-sistance system which en-ables it to drive completely

autonomously at speeds of up to 85 km/h.

Bernhard said the truck “is our response to the major challenges and opportunities associated with road freight transport of the future” in-cluding connectivity to its complete environment — the infrastructure and mem-bers of the motoring public — and its economy and last but certainly not least, its safety advantages.

“If the legislative frame-work for autonomous driv-ing can be created quickly, the launch of the Highway Pilot is conceivable by the middle of the next decade,” Bernhard said. “That’s why Daimler Trucks is committed to maintain a dialogue with government officials and au-thorities and with all other parties affected by its de-velopment. We believe the chances are good because autonomous driving com-bines the ability to achieve business and technology ob-jectives with the creation of benefits for society and the environment.” b

Agrifoods International Co-op driver Dean Grant of Duncan, BC, won the Grand Champion title at BC’s 2014 Professional Truck Driving Champion-ships on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Abbotsford’s Tra-dex Centre.

Dean Grant is a veteran of the BC event and was named Grand Champion at both the 2009 and 2010 championships and was a member of the BC Team that won the National com-petition in Ottawa in 2008.

Rookie of the Year is Stephen Scott, who drives for Simard Westlink, while Rob Balan, sponsored by Ocean Trailer, received the 2014 Safety Award.

Within the remaining categories, first place win-ners include: Evan Hirst, competing as an inde-pendent, in Single-Single; Dale Scott, sponsored by Fountain Tire, in Single-Tandem; Brian Meredith, of McRae’s Environmen-tal Services, in Tandem-Tandem; and Lorne Road-house, of Overland West Freight Lines Ltd., in Super B-Train. Dale Scott and Lorne Roadhouse also won within their categories in 2013.

Each of the category winners will represent BC in the 2014 National Championships in Esterel, Quebec from Thursday, September 4 to Sunday, September 7, 2014, com-peting against elite driver teams from other provin-cial competitions across Canada.

The Championships consist of:• a written test, which

challenges the drivers’

general knowledge of the industry and equipment;

• a pre-trip inspection, which approximates the drivers’ regular vehicle inspection; and

• the driving competition, which simulates the ev-eryday skills of maneu-vering, cornering and judging distance. To compete, drivers

must have no preventable accidents in the twelve months prior to the cham-pionships. A “preventable accident” could include even a minor occurrence such as a broken tail light on a trailer.

A banquet at the Sher-aton Guildford Hotel in Surrey followed the com-petition, with Ken Martin, Organizing Committee Chair, and Gary Ryder, Chief Judge, Chevron Can-ada Limited, presenting the awards to winners in each class.2014 BC Professional Truck Driving Championships Winners:

When it comes to vocational truck sales, there’s a revival go-ing on. A year-over-year sales increase for Kenworth vocational trucks reflects grow-ing construction activ-ity, increased oil and gas production, and en-couraging new housing starts figures, according to Kurt Swihart, Ken-worth Marketing Direc-tor.

Demand also is being driven by construction companies, contractors, concrete producers and building suppliers oper-ating old 2004 and 2007 EPA engine units that need to be replaced with new trucks. “As a re-sult, we’ve seen strong interest in our new Ken-worth T880 vocational flagship truck that be-gan full production at the start of 2014,” Swi-hart said. “The T880 is expected to soon repre-sent about 50 percent of Kenworth’s vocational

truck production.” The Kenworth T880

attracted significant in-terest at leading indus-try trade shows such as CONEXPO -CON/AGG in Las Vegas, the Work Truck Show in India-napolis, and the Global Petroleum Show in Cal-gary. Vocational truck buyers are choosing the Kenworth T880 because of its increased driver comfort from a wider and quieter cab with its triple-sealed and robust doors, increased visibil-ity from the panoramic, one-piece windshield, and best-in-class for-ward lighting systems. Buyers also appreciate the T880’s integrated powertrain packages.

“For example, the PACCAR MX-13 engine coupled with an au-tomatic or automated transmission helps re-move some stress from the overall driving ex-perience, especially for younger, more inexperi-

enced drivers,” he said. “Plus, the Kenworth T880 is more comfort-able to drive, offers better seats and pedal placement, and possess-es excellent maneuver-ability. The result is a more comfortable work environment, and a com-fortable driver is a more productive driver.”

Productivity is re-ally what’s it’s all about when it comes to voca-tional trucks.

“Simply stated, the Kenworth T880 is a dependable, versatile truck capable of per-forming the toughest jobs productively and efficiently. In the final analysis, the truck with the most turns done in a single day is what will help vocational truck operators win the day. For most vocational truck fleets, even the equivalent of one more load delivered each day through increased pay-load capacity is going to make the biggest dif-ference in your bottom line,” said Swihart. “As we like to say, the Ken-worth T880 is a jobsite hero for our custom-ers.” b

Trucking HR Canada is conducting a series of sur-veys so it can better under-stand the issues and chal-lenges faced by women in the trucking industry.

The surveys – open to managers of both sexes, women working in truck-ing and those interested in the industry’s career op-

portunities – support the organization’s new Wom-en with Drive project and can be completed in about 10 minutes. They are ac-cessible at www.Trucking-HR.com.

“Rather than relying on anecdotal evidence, these surveys will give us the data needed to develop

the practical tools which will help fleets recruit and retain more women,” says Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada.

Women represent close to 48% of Canada’s labour force, but just 3% of Can-ada’s truck driver, techni-cians and cargo workers. They also represent just 11% of managers, 13% of parts technicians, 18% of dispatchers, and 25% of freight claims/safety and loss prevention special-ists, Trucking HR Canada points out. b

To help customers max-imize their return on in-vestment, Mack Trucks an-nounced it is now working with an organization to as-sist dealers and customers navigate through the grant process to obtain public funding for alternative fuel- and clean diesel-powered vehicles.

“Mack is a leader in offering customers solu-tions that improve the total cost of ownership,” said

Brian Layman, Mack Vice President of Business De-velopment. “Whether the solution is an alternative fuel vehicle or a service, such as helping simplify the grant application pro-cess, Mack is dedicated to working with customers to help achieve their business

needs.” Mack retained the ser-

vices of the Sustainability Initiatives Group (SIG), which will maintain an up-to-date inventory of federal and state grant information, offer sum-maries on relevant grant opportunities and assist in the grant application pro-cess, including the writing of the grant.

Customers should con-tact their local Mack dealer for more information. b

Petertbilt Motors Com-pany and its parent compa-ny PACCAR Inc won four prestigious Manufacturing Leadership Awards as se-lected by Frost & Sullivan’s Manufacturing Leadership Council, and took top hon-ours in the categories of Workplace Leadership and Engineering and Product Technology Leadership. The top awards, called High Achiever Awards, were announced during the Manufacturing Leadership Summit in Palm Beach,

Fla., at an event attended by hundreds of executives throughout various indus-tries and markets.

“It’s an honour to be recognized for our ongoing efforts to innovate in all ar-eas of our operations, par-ticularly from among such a diverse and worthy field of candidates as those se-lected by Frost & Sullivan,” said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PAC-CAR Vice President. “Our design, engineering and manufacturing initiatives

lead not only the trucking industry, but set new stan-dards for quality, efficiency and technological leader-ship across all industries.”

Peterbilt won the High Achiever Award in the Workplace Leadership cat-egory for its Human Cen-tered Design program used throughout all areas of its operations, including dur-ing its product design and testing.

Peterbilt’s Human Cen-tered Design initiatives use a diverse, cross-depart-

mental selection of com-pany employees, as well as customers and individuals from other industries alto-gether (such as aerospace, law enforcement, tele-communications, etc.), to brainstorm, test and evalu-ate company processes, as well as in the development of new product introduc-tions. This program has helped guide some of the company’s most success-ful new product launches, such as the double-bunk design on the company’s newest on-highway truck – the Model 579 – and the clean rail package for the company’s newest medi-um-duty truck, the Model 220. In other areas, it has been applied to such di-

verse departments as ac-counting, human resources and quality assurance.

PACCAR won the High Achiever Award in the Engineering and Product Technology Leadership category for its Flexible Machining Line Production Process at its PACCAR En-gine manufacturing facility. The PACCAR award for its Flexible Machining Line Production Process rec-ognizes the plant’s highly automated processes to manufacture a wide range of PACCAR MX-13 Engines with zero variance in qual-ity and efficiency.

Peterbilt also received a Manufacturing Leadership Award for its model line approach to Lean Manu-facturing Management in the Operational Leadership category and PACCAR also received a Manufacturing Leadership Award in the Engineering and Product Technology Leadership cat-

egory for the Non-Contact Axle Alignment System in place at Peterbilt’s Denton, Texas, manufacturing facil-ity.

“Continual improve-ment in our manufactur-ing processes to deliver our customers the highest quality products that meets their exact needs drives everything we do,” said Leon Handt, Peterbilt’s As-sistant General Manager of Operations. “Our pro-duction facilities feature highly trained employees, complemented by strate-gic areas of robotics and automation for a finished, custom-built truck that is second to none in the com-mercial vehicle industry.”

Frost & Sullivan’s Manufacturing Leadership Awards are now in their 10th year and honour com-panies and individuals that innovate and set new stan-dards in manufacturing across all industries. b

After unveiling the first-ever truck to be built from the ground up through fan votes on so-cial media channels, the Western Star “Design Our Star” show truck is now on the road, pulling the Owner-Operator Indepen-dent Drivers Association

Kenworth Truck Company recently an-nounced that its indus-try-leading, fuel-effi-cient Kenworth T680 is now available for order with a natural gas pow-ered engine.

The Kenworth T680 in day cab, 52-inch mid-roof sleeper and 76-inch sleeper configurations now can be specified with the factory-installed Cummins Westport ISX12 G natural gas en-gine rated up to 400 hp and 1,450 lb-ft of torque.

The ISX12 G requires a single fuel source and can run on either CNG (Com-pressed Natural Gas) or LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). The engine uses a maintenance-free, three-

“Spirit of the American Trucker” tour trailer to truck shows, conferences and truck stops through-out the United States.

Western Star 4900EX is a new classic rig helmed by Boise, Idaho-based Jon Osburn, a driver with more than 20 years of ex-

way catalyst and does not require a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Selective Catalytic Reduc-tion (SCR) technology. Kenworth works with such companies as Agil-ity Fuel Systems, Trilogy Engineered Solutions, and McNeilus to provide natu-ral gas tanks and fueling systems.

"The new, natural-gas powered Kenworth T680 especially appeals to truck fleets and op-erators interested in low cost of operation opportunities from the effective combination of the T680's fuel-saving aerodynamics and cost-efficient natural gas fuel," said Andy Doug-

perience. Osburn, who was a U.S. Navy Hospi-tal corpsman and served with the United States Ma-rine Corps as a flight med-ic and later a paramedic, also spent two years be-hind the wheel of “The Merv” – a medical educa-tional and resource vehi-

las, Kenworth National Sales Manager for Spe-cialty Markets.

Since entering pro-duction two years ago, the Kenworth T680 has become Kenworth most popular truck of choice for fleets interested in excellent fuel economy and outstanding driver comfort features. The T680 was introduced in day cab and 76-inch sleeper configurations,

cle that provides medical screens for truck drivers.

“The entire package is absolutely stunning – the truck attracts a lot of atten-tion everywhere we go,” said Osburn. “But the truck is more than just great looks – the Western Star is fantastic to drive, and the Detroit DD16 engine has already been achieving im-pressive performance. It’s an honour to be behind the wheel of such a fantastic truck.”

With more than 16,000

and a 52-inch mid-roof sleeper option was add-ed last year.

Kenworth displayed a T680 52-inch sleeper equipped with the Cum-mins Westport ISX12 G engine powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at this year's Mid-America Trucking Show and at the annual Alternative Clean Trans-portation (ACT) Expo. Kenworth also offers the ISX12 G in the Kenworth T660 and the Kenworth T800 short hood with a 116.5-inch BBC.

votes during the year-long campaign, fans selected the truck model, applica-tion, engine, interior and exterior options. The truck includes a “big and bold” chrome accessory package, a custom paint job, and a plush Ultra High Strato-sphere Sleeper decked out in premium leather.

“The Design Our Star truck really captures what our fans love about West-ern Star – the bold and custom features combined with a powerful truck,”

said Andy Johnson, Brand Manager for Western Star. “We’re so pleased to part-ner with Jon and OOIDA to bring the Spirit of the American Trucker tour trailer on the road to pro-mote the business of truck-ing.”

Big jobs require big power. That’s why Big Red Towing in Syracuse, NY, depends on their Detroit powered West-ern Star 4900 trucks to get the job done.

“We specialize in heavy towing and trans-port, and do a lot of off-site jobs, such as pull-ing windmill towers

up and down dirt-road mountains, which can be very stressful,” said Ron Pullen, Operations Manager, Tow Truck Division for Big Red Towing. “Our Western Star trucks help ease the stress by having the strength we need, com-bined with the quiet ride of a luxury car.”

After Big Red Towing added its first Western Star – a 4900SB with a Detroit DD15 engine – to its fleet, they were so impressed with the truck’s performance they recently added a second.

“Our first Western Star has been phenomenal,” said Pullen. “Not only do

we love the smooth ride and Detroit power and efficiency, our drivers and customers love the truck too. When it came time to add another tow truck, we again turned to Western Star and De-troit.”

The new viper-red Western Star 4900SB has a Detroit DD16 en-gine, an 18K front axle, a 46K rear tandem axle, and a 40-inch sleeper to accommodate a clean back of cab. The truck also features a Century 1130 rotator towing and recovery unit and a custom winch brake

that provides even more stability while winching large, heavy objects.

“You just can’t beat Detroit power com-bined with the quality, roominess and luxury of Western Star,” said

Pullen. “We’re so im-pressed with our trucks, we’re already planning our next Western Star.”

Weigh2GoBC is a net-work of Weigh in Motion and Automatic Vehicle Identification hardware that is located at various locations throughout BC.

The purpose of the pro-gram is to allow commer-

cial carriers faster delivery by not having to stop at multiple stations for a peri-od of 24 hours. It also saves staff time by not having to look at the same truck mul-tiple times in a day.

By registering with

the program and install-ing a transponder on the dash of each truck, it al-lows electronic reporting to those equipped inspec-tion stations. The roadside hardware communicates with the transponder, runs a number of credential checks and then signals the driver by way of a green light which means that they can bypass that station or a red light which means that the vehicle must report. b

It doesn’t get “much” better than this. A Mack Pinnacle Rawhide Edition carrying members of the Canadian rap rock band Down With Webster stole the show during its grand red carpet entrance at the recent Much Music Video Awards in Toronto.

Four members of the band, which was nomi-nated for pop video of the year, arrived on the red carpet in a 70-inch mid-

rise sleeper cab version of the Rawhide Edition, per-fect for making an impres-sive entrance. The truck’s button-tuck interior offered maximum style and com-fort for the band.

“A rock rap band like Down With Webster de-serves an extraordinary and unique arrival at an event like the Much Mu-sic Video Awards,” said John Walsh, Mack Vice President of Marketing.

“If they wanted unique, they got unique. The Mack Pinnacle offered a show-stopping entrance and one that would be difficult to compete with for any other band. It was clear that the entrance of the band in our Pinnacle Rawhide Edition would be the buzz-worthy moment of the red carpet.”

The truck was equipped with a Mack MP8 505E+ engine and Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmis-sion delivering the power and performance band members desired for their arrival.

The 25th annual Much Music Video Awards was co-hosted by Kylie and Kendall Jenner. b
