Every day, a small ant arrives at work very early

and starts work immediately.

Page 4: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

She produces a lot and she was happy.

Page 5: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The Chief, a lion,

was surprised to see

that the ant was

working without

supervision.

Page 6: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

He thought if the ant

can produce so much

without supervision,

wouldn’t she produce

even more if she had a

supervisor!

Page 7: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

So he recruited a

cockroach

who had extensive

experience as

supervisor and who

was famous for

writing excellent

reports.

Page 8: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The cockroach’s first

decision was to set up

a clocking in

attendance system.

Page 9: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

He also needed a

secretary to help him

write and type his

reports and …

Page 10: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

... he recruited a spider,

who managed the

archives and monitored

all phone calls.

Page 11: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The lion was delighted

with the cockroach's

reports

and asked him to

produce graphs to

describe production

rates and to analyse

trends, so that he could

use them for

presentations at

Board‘s meetings.

Page 12: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

So the cockroach had to buy a new computer

and a laser printer and ...

Page 13: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

... recruited a fly

to manage the IT

department.

Page 14: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The ant, who had once been so productive and

relaxed, hated this new plethora of paperwork

and meetings which used up most of her time…!

Page 15: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The position was given to

the cicada, whose first

decision was to buy a carpet

and an ergonomic chair for

his office.

Page 16: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The new person in charge, the

cicada, also needed a computer

and a personal assistant ,who

he brought from his previous

department, to help him

prepare a Work and Budget

Control Strategic Optimisation

Plan …

The Department where the ant

works is now a sad place,

where nobody laughs anymore

and everybody has become

upset...

Page 18: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

It was at that time

that the cicada

convinced the boss ,

the lion, of the

absolute necessity to

start a climatic study

of the environment .

Page 19: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

Having reviewed

the charges for

running the ant’s

department , the

lion found out that

the production

was much less than

before.

Page 20: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

So he recruited the

owl, a prestigious

and renowned

consultant to carry

out an audit and

suggest solutions.

Page 21: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The owl spent three

months in the

department and

came up with an

enormous report ,

in several volumes,

that concluded :

“ “ The department is The department is

overstaffed ...”overstaffed ...”

Page 22: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

Guess who the lion fires first?

Page 23: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

The ant , of course, because she “showed lack of motivation and had a negative

attitude".

14 Point Philosophy of Edward Deming

1. Clearly define the vision and mission and have

consistency in the follow up.

2. Adopt the philosophy of not accepting delays

mistakes & defects.

3. Inspect the product or process at every stage

instead of inspecting the end product.

4. Quality of the product is equally important like the price tag.

5. Improve the system constantly.

6. Train the manpower to improve quality.

7. Lead by example and not by quality.Cont…..

Page 45: Total Quality Management In Higher Education (TQM) Dr. B. Vanitha Associate Professor in Economics Presented by.

8. Drive out the fear in the organization so that

everybody will work with a sense of belonging.

9. Integrate the departments to break the barriers.

10. Do not ask for increased performance without providing

a better / right method to accomplish the task.

11. Do not have work standards that prescribe numerical quotas.

12. Remove appraisal system that encourages conflict among the staff.

13. Institute vigorous programmes of education & training.

14. Make everybody responsible to work for transformation.
