o and do likewise.” (Luke 10:37) In a series of TV advertisements, a US insurance company touted the benefits of using their website by

saying it was “so easy a caveman can do it.” The implication was that anyone with half a brain could figure it out. Well, today’s Gospel reading has a similar moral: The call to care for the needy is so obvious that “even a Samaritan” would do it.

Jesus told this parable because a “scholar of the law” asked him, “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:25, 29). According to Luke, the question was really a trap. But knowing what was in the man’s heart, Jesus turned the tables on him. By telling a story about a Samaritan who did the right thing when other experts in the Law like this lawyer didn’t, Jesus made it clear that it doesn’t take years of study to know how to love God and love our neighbor. It just takes the courage and the humility to do what is right.

What person in his or her right mind would walk right past a man who had nearly been beaten to death? Anyone confronted with this situation would feel a sense of obligation, an inner conviction to help save the man’s life. But in the parable, it took a Samaritan, someone considered uncouth and outside of God’s covenant grace, to do the right thing. What’s more, this man goes beyond the bounds of everyday kindness. He pays for the wounded man’s treatment and even promises to return and pick up the tab for any other expenses the man may incur. Such extreme generosity—even from a Samaritan—would win the admiration of anyone who knew about it!

Jesus tells us the same thing he told the lawyer, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). It’s that simple. It’s that clear. It’s so easy, in fact, that a Samaritan can do it. So go and do likewise. Listen to that inner urge to reach out and help. Act quickly to do what is right. Who knows how many lives you may save?

A Eucharistic Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the main altar, a brief reflection on Scripture, and confessions is held on the 3rd Monday of each month following the 5:30pm Mass. ary has chosen the better part.” (Luke 10:42) A rip current is a strong channel of water that flows out to sea and can drag

swimmers away from the shore with alarming speed and strength. But you don’t have to swim in the ocean to feel that kind of pull. Ideas, obligations, and desires tug powerfully at us every day. And the only way to avoid disaster is to swim out of their current—to do what Mary did and take time to sit in God’s presence.

Sit with him and let him speak to you: about your life, about his life in you, about his love for you. Open your heart to him without fear of what will follow. Whatever your shortcomings, failings and weaknesses, he loves, loves, loves you! He delights in giving himself to everyone who is ready to receive it. You can sit, as Mary did, unashamed and truthful about your life, and soak up the Father’s love for you. This is the better part!

This story of Martha and Mary shows us that experiencing God’s love is the most healing, empowering, inspiring thing we can do. Better than any good work, and more desirable to the Lord, is the flow of love and affection, of knowing and being known, between him and you. Yes, he sees your deepest sins, but he looks deeper still. He knows your desires for holiness, purity, and innocence. He knows the “real you” that longs to please him, to help people, and to build his kingdom. He knows the “you” that is willing to swim out of the current of anything that pulls you away from him.

Nothing is more motivating, encouraging, or inspiring than tasting God’s love. This is no passive acceptance of sin and weakness. Knowing the Father’s love, and being intimately known by him, can move you to part with sin and to overcome failure. It can build strength where you are weak. Knowing his love can release his life in you more fully and allow you to become exactly the person he created you to be.

“Here I am, Father! Teach me about your life and your love for me.”

FAREWELL FROM FATHER EVELIO

Dear Friends, I would like to thank you for giving me

the opportunity to walk with you on the journey of faith during these last four years. Right after my arrival at the Cathedral, you opened your arms and your hearts, took me by my hand and accepted me as part of Saint Matthew’s family. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, many times we shared sad and painful moments as well as moments full of joy and hope, especially as we recognized the Lord in the breaking of Bread, at the celebration of the Eucharist and the other sacraments.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve with you the poor and needy through the diverse Social Justice programs. Many times as I saw the need of so many, I was tempted to say, like the disciples: “dismiss them so that they may look for provisions somewhere else.” It was you who brought out your gifts of time, talent, and treasure, putting them in the hands of the Lord to bless them and multiply them “and behold, all ate and were satisfied.” You are my teachers of charity and generosity!

To my brother priests and cathedral staff, especially to Msgr. Jameson, thank you for your support and trust and for sharing in the daytoday ministry. Each of you, in your own area of responsibility, even doing the most humble task, has been an example of dedication and commitment to the entrusted mission.

Many thanks also for the countless expressions of love and affection in the last weeks. Your kindness and generosity are a sign of the great heart you have. You and your families will be always in my prayers and I entrust myself to yours.

Dear Parishioners – my dear friends, May I take this opportunity to

thank you all for your prayers, kind words, cards, and gifts that you have given me as I take leave of my home here at St. Matthew to begin anew full time ministry as pastor in the parish community of St. Bartholomew in Bethesda, Maryland. My nearly 7 years as Director of the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of Washington was an exciting and challenging time, but it was made all the more enjoyable and manageable by being here among so many wonderful and faithfilled people. I always knew that my work would go well and smoothly when I was working with and among you all. The various ministries of this dynamic and unique parish – altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, greeters, ushers, musicians, choir members, sacristans, professional staff, and clergy were all so

generous with their time and talent to make my work light and easy. And the general faithful were always so inspiring in your daily and weekly confessions, prayers, and devotions, that you inspired me to pray more

thoughtfully and more deeply. Please know that I will miss the St.

Matthew community very much. Please pray for me, my successor,

and for more vocations to the priestly life. I sincerely promise you my prayers for God’s many blessings. I have striven to always serve Christ in all my work – I see Christ in you.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? – “The RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process through which non‐baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants in the RCIA are known as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the Church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the normal way adults prepare for baptism. In 1974 the Rite for Christian Initiation for Adults was formally approved for use in the United States” (www.usccb.org). The RCIA also is for adults baptized in other Christian traditions who wish to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist in the Catholic Church and for adults who were baptized in the Catholic Church and wish to complete their initiation. HOLY CROSS – Osteoporosis is a disease affecting millions of Americans in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. While women are more likely to develop osteoporosis, men can also suffer from the disease. Holy Cross will again be present at this year's Health and Wellness Fair to offer free Osteoporosis screenings, where each individual will find out current bone density and risk of Osteopenia (pre‐osteoporosis) or Osteoporosis.

from every day life. In Summer "Idylls" this traditional form is expanded to capture a variety of summer scenes. Featuring a collection of music from Bach to Gershwin, the program travels from listlessness, to romance, and finally escapes from the city to the rural for a much needed vacation. Come enjoy an afternoon of splendid vocal music featuring the talents of singers from the Schola Cantorum and the Contemporary Choir. The concert is free and open to the public. Guests will be given an opportunity to hear about the Great Organ of the Cathedral and our final efforts to complete this magnificent instrument for our 175th Anniversary.

LECTURAS DEL 14 DE JULIO

esús conocía el pensamiento divino y obedecía todo lo que le escuchaba decir al Padre. Como nuevo Adán, escuchaba la voz de Dios sin distorsión

alguna, no contaminada con las ideas preconcebidas ni prejuicios propios del pecado. Por lo tanto, en su enseñanza y en su vida, Jesús dio a conocer cabalmente el corazón y la mente de Dios. Y a nosotros nos toca aceptar el amor y el pensamiento de Dios, para que nuestro razonamiento sea transformado y aprendamos a vivir rectamente. Esto es algo que solo podemos hacer cuando nos acercamos a Jesús y reconocemos quién es él.

Jesucristo es Aquel por medio de quien y para quien fuimos creados nosotros y todas las cosas. Él es el que todo lo sostiene con su Palabra (Hebreos 1,3), y el que ha reconciliado todas las cosas en sí mismo y es la plenitud de Dios. Él nos ha redimido por su sangre, nos ha devuelto la vida mediante el don de su Espíritu Santo (2 Corintios 5,17). Finalmente, Cristo ha congregado a su pueblo, su Cuerpo, que es la Iglesia, de la cual él es la cabeza.

Cuando oramos regularmente, leemos la Escritura y recibimos los sacramentos, tenemos constante acceso a su plenitud. Cristo, el Creador de todo, está continuamente recreándonos mediante su gracia y los sacramentos.

El Beato Juan Pablo II escribió: “El Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento afirman expresamente que sin amor al prójimo, que se materializa en la observancia de los mandamientos, no es posible amar genuinamente a Dios” (Veritatis Splendor, 14). De modo que si queremos amar de verdad al Creador, debemos dejar que Cristo nos regenere cada día, para que la mente y el corazón del Padre se vayan formando en nosotros, y sepamos amar y ayudar al prójimo con el amor de Dios.

“Amado Señor, concédeme tu gracia para aprender a cumplir tu mandamiento de amarte a ti con todo mi corazón, toda mi alma, toda mi fuerza y toda mi mente; y amar a mi prójimo como a mí mismo.”

DESPEDIDA DEL PADRE EVELIO Estimados Hermanos,

Quiero agradecerles por darme la oportunidad de caminar juntos en el camino de la fe durante estos cuatro años. Inmediatamente llegué a la Catedral, ustedes me abrieron sus brazos y su corazón, me

tomaron de la mano, y me aceptaron en esta gran familia. Al igual que los discípulos en el camino de Emaus, muchas veces

compartimos momentos de dolor y tristeza pero también momentos llenos de alegría y esperanza, especialmente al partir el Pan, al celebrar la Eucaristía, y demás sacramentos.

Gracias también por darme la oportunidad de servir junto a ustedes a los pobres y necesitados a través de los programas de Justicia Social. Muchas veces al ver las necesidades de tanta gente, estuve tentado a decir como los discípulos, “despídeles para que vayan a otro lugar a buscar provisiones.” Fueron ustedes los que compartieron sus talentos, tiempo y tesoro poniéndolos en las manos del Señor para que los bendijera y multiplicara. “Y todos comieron hasta saciarse.” ¡Ustedes son mis maestros en caridad y generosidad!

A mis hermanos sacerdotes y al personal de la catedral, especialmente a monseñor Jameson muchas gracias por su apoyo, confianza y por compartir día a día en el ministerio. Cada uno en su área de responsabilidad, aun haciendo las labores más sencillas, ha sido ejemplo de dedicación y entrega a misión confiada.

Mil gracias también por todas las muestras de cariño y afecto en estas ultimas semanas. Su bondad y generosidad es muestra del gran corazón que tienen.

CORO DE ESPAÑA EN NUESTRA MISA – Hoy domingo 14, damos la bienvenida en nuestra misa de español, a un coro de jóvenes de España, que vienen de gira a los Estados Unidos. Su repertorio incluye un preludio antes de la misa, canto en las ofrendas y comunión, como también un par de canciones después de la misa. ADORACIÓN AL SANTÍSIMO SACRAMENTO – Les invitamos el lunes 15 de julio después de la misa de 5:30 de la tarde, a que se unan en adoración al Santísimo, de 6 a 7 de la tarde. LECTURAS DEL 21 DE JULIO

uchas personas consideran que la conocida historia de Marta y María presenta un contraste entre la vida de servicio y la vida contemplativa.

Por otro lado, algunos se conduelen de Marta porque estiman que Jesús no fue justo al no apreciar sus servicios y preferir la pasiva atención de María. Lo cierto es que Jesús no le llamó la atención; solamente le dijo que se preocupaba demasiado por el trabajo de la casa; en cambio su hermana no quería perderse nada de lo que él les decía.

La clave de la historia de Marta y María es que para crecer en el conocimiento del Señor hay que leer y meditar en su Palabra. Como lo dijo san Jerónimo: “El que no conoce la Sagrada Escritura, no conoce a Jesucristo.”

El Señor visita a todos los que le aman, porque quiere tener una cálida comunión con sus hijos, pero ¿cómo lo recibimos nosotros? Marta recibió a Jesús en su casa, aunque en su corazón había molestia contra su hermana. El Señor estaba en su casa, pero ella no le daba atención personal, porque estaba ocupada con los quehaceres.

A veces nos ocupamos tanto en nuestros deberes —ya sea sirviendo en la iglesia o en casa, ayudando a los enfermos o atendiendo a los necesitados— que nos olvidamos que el Señor está allí. En todas estas actividades y en todo lo que hacemos, Jesús está presente en nosotros y quiere que conozcamos su presencia. Por el Bautismo y la fe, Cristo vive dentro de nosotros. Esta es la maravillosa promesa de la fe y nuestra esperanza de gloria (Colosenses 1,27). No pierdas de vista al Señor, querido hermano, porque él siempre está dentro de ti guiándote, fortaleciéndote, protegiéndote y esperando que le hables y les cuentes tus alegrías y tus pesares, porque te ama como nadie jamás te ha amado.

“Señor mío Jesucristo, lléname de tu Espíritu Santo para que yo sepa reconocerte y entregarme de corazón a ti, y escoger así la mejor parte al escuchar tu Palabra y servir a los demás.”

MARRIAGE Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.

BAPTISM Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 x555 or [email protected]. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they may ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor.

Adopt-A-Family Program School Supply Drive

July 28 and August 4, 2013 All Sunday Masses

St. Matthew’s Adopt-A-Family Program provides material assistance throughout the year to families from low-income households that belong to our parish and surrounding community. We will be collecting school supplies for the children of these families to help them have a successful start to the school year. Please bring new items to Mass on July 28 and August 4. Volunteers will collect them at the main entrance of the Cathedral. You may also leave monetary donations and supplies at the rectory on weekdays.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONST. MATTHEW’S CATHEDRAL

2013-2014

The Religious Education program at St. Matthew’s Cathedral exists to provide sacramental preparation for FirstReconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation as well as ongoing faith formation for children who have receivedthese sacraments. It strives to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ in the context of the beliefs andpractices of the Roman Catholic Church. The program presents the four fundamental themes of the Catechism ofthe Catholic Church – Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer – in such a way that the children of our parish beginto understand how to live the Gospel.When and where are classes held?Classes are held weekly on Sunday mornings from 9:45 to 11am in the St. Matthew’s Education Center located at 1726N Street NW. It is expected that parents will attend a special class for them at the same time and that families willworship at either the 8:30am Mass before class or the 11:30am Mass following class. Classes generally are not held onholiday weekends.

When do classes begin?There will be a mandatory parent-teacher meeting Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 9:45 to 11am in the WestConference Room. Classes will begin Sunday, September 15, 2013 and conclude in late May.

How do I register my child(ren)?Complete the two-sided registration form (available in the Cathedral rectory and on the parish website), and attachyour child’s Baptism certificate (if new to the Religious Education program) and cash or check made payable to St.Matthew’s Cathedral for $50.00 per family. Financial assistance and/or a payment plan are available for those inneed.
