8 In the first part of this series on the SAT, we will discuss
the strategies behind the strategies. In other words, we will
discuss the best way to arrange a students SAT preparation.
To begin, it is helpful to dispel some myths regarding the SAT.
The most significant and misleadin mistake? That test preparation
is enough by itself to succeed at the SAT. Of course, test prep is
a necessary component of student preparation, but it is not enough
to ensure success. Let me explain.
The SAT essentially tests students on two different skills:
fundamental academic understanding, and test-taking ability. Think
of things in this way: fundamental skills are much like knowing how
to drive a car. Test-taking skills are comparable to knowing a
shortcut from one part of town to another. Although knowing a
shortcut is wonderful for getting things done efficiently, it is
useless if one doesnt know how to drive. Just like this,
test-taking ability the understanding of the test structure, the
understanding of logical tricks within the test, and the speed with
which students are taught to take the test is useless if students
do not have fundamental skills.
So, in order to succeed on the SAT, students need two skill
sets: test-taking skills and fundamental skills. What makes this
especially difficult for the students with whom we work is the fact
that many have difficulty with Critical Reading the most difficult
of the SAT sections to perform well upon, and the hardest to learn
quickly.
When beginning to prepare for the SAT, then, students must
arrange their plan as follows:1. Take a practice SAT to understand
where their strengths lie.2. Understand where the student needs
fundamental skills help, and where they simply need test
preparation assistance.3. Attack each of the problems in turn. If
the student needs assistance with Critical Reading, for example,
students should work on their fundamental reading skills prior to
attempting test preparation courses.
With any case a student who has fundamental skills deficiencies
in all areas, as well as students who need nothing more than test
preparation assistance ThinkTank Learning has solutions. Please
feel free to contact one of our centers in order to determine the
best course of action for your child. In last months article, we
discussed some myths surrounding the SAT, as well as the necessity
of enhancing ones fundamental skills before engaging in any sort of
test preparation. The metaphor, if you remember, was that of
driving. SAT prep is much like knowing a shortcut between two
different points on a map; fundamental skills training, on the
other hand, is analogous to knowing how to drive a car. A shortcut
is useless if one cant drive, and driving often takes too long
without knowing which shortcut to take. The two activities work
hand-in-hand.
In terms of actually taking the exam, it does little good for a
student to take the SAT too early and there are innumerable
students who take the SAT far earlier than would be desired. Having
worked in the Silicon Valley for several years, I have seen
students taking the SAT earlier and earlier each season. Although
taking the SAT may help earn admission to Stanfords EPGY and Johns
Hopkins CTY summer programs, there is little else that the SAT can
do for an 8th or 9th grader. In fact, it can hurt rather than
help.
The optimal time for a student to begin preparing for the SAT is
during the summer following their sophomore year in high school.
Any earlier than this and the student might not have the required
math skills; they almost certainly will not have sophisticated
grammar, reading, and writing skills. Any later, though, and
students will simply not have the time to adequately prepare.
Although students should begin preparing for the actual SAT
during the summer after 10th grade, they nevertheless must do some
groundwork before this time. This is to say that students should
begin filling in the gaps of their fundamental skills far earlier
than preparing for the SAT. Beginning in 9th grade, students should
take a diagnostic test that gauges their performance on the SAT;
this should not be administered by the College Board, but should be
done as a practice exam. Once students identify exactly what their
deficiencies are, practice and coursework must follow. For
instance, if a students Critical Reading and Writing scores are
low, students should immediately begin taking supplemental
coursework in order to ensure that these skills are developed by
the time the real SAT is taken.
Students should actually take the SAT, then, beginning during
the fall of their junior year; they should retest the

How to prepare the SAT I by ThinkTank Learning Senior Consultant
Eddie LaMeire
following spring. In the event that the student has not earned
the score that they desire after the second test date, they will
have at least allowed themselves the fall of their senior year for
a third test. Generally speaking, a student should not take the SAT
any more than three times, with two times being the most desired
number of sittings; a high number of SAT sittings reflects poorly
on an applicant. And, although many schools participate in the
Score Choice option, which allows students to choose the test
scores that they will submit to colleges, an equal number of
top-tier schools request that students submit all test scores that
they have received. The best time to begin preparing for the test
is over the summer following the sophomore year in high school. Any
earlier than this, and the student might not have the required
skills; any later, and the student will not have the time to
prepare for the tests.
But, what about the SAT Subject Tests? Should students take
them? Which tests should they take? This will be the subject of
this months article.
To first address an issue that most students and parents are
aware of by now, students applying to the University of California
for the fall of 2012 or later are not required to take the SAT
Subject Tests. However, as I have mentioned before, this policy
really affects students in terms of their mere eligibility not
necessarily in terms of their admissibility. Were a student simply
interested in becoming eligible for admission to UC, the Subject
Tests would be optional. In reality, though, most students are
trying to earn admission to the most competitive UCs and the most
rigorous majors. So, the Subject Tests for most students are more
than just optional. To look at it in a different way, Stanford
University requires no SAT Subject Tests. They recommend two of
them. But, Ive never seen a student admitted to Stanford without
these tests.
Along these same lines, students should be aware that there are
a certain number of tests that they should take. Just about every
school in the country, if they require SAT Subject Test scores,
requires two of them, preferably from different subject areas. In
two cases Harvard and Georgetown schools require three SAT Subject
Tests.
Although reporting a high number of SAT Subject Test scores
doesnt have a direct correlation with the level of school to which
a student is ultimately admitted, having multiple scores on file
does help the college make a more informed decision about the
student. As far as the number of scores a student submits to the
school is concerned, we recommend that the student take and submit
three solid scores, especially if one of these scores is Chinese or
the students native language; in the cases of Harvard and
Georgetown, students should submit four solid scores. This approach
works to the students benefit in several ways. To begin, it will
show a wide range of knowledge on the part of the student.
Additionally, in the case that the student has taken a subject test
in her native language, submitting an extra score will serve to
show that she is not trying to take a shortcut. The tests that the
student takes should fall in line with their interests, but they
should also cover enough different areas to meet a schools
requirements. For a student interested in going into a pre-med
curriculum, for instance, the most obvious tests to take would be
in the areas of Biology and Chemistry. However, many schools the
University of California among them require students taking the SAT
Subject Tests to take them from at least two different fields of
study. So, students interested in the sciences cannot take merely
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Similarly, students interested in
history must take tests other than World History and U.S.
History.
Regardless, students should take tests that do, in fact, relate
to their interests. A student interested in engineering, for
instance, should take exams in Math Level II and a science
preferably physics, especially if the student is interested in
mechanical engineering. Humanities students can feel free to take
tests in both English Literature as well as one of the history
tests. But, be careful! The history exams and English Literature
have the lowest average scores of any of the Subject Tests. Pre-med
students, of course, should take the tests in the subject areas in
which they feel most comfortable. But, as we stated above, the
student will also need to take a test outside of the science
fields.
In short, students should take the SAT Subject Tests for
competitive schools; they should take at least three exams,
especially if one of them is in a native language; and they should
focus their tests around areas relating to their majors as long as
they also conform to the testing demands of the schools to which
they are applying. For next months article, we will continue the
discussion of SAT Subject Tests specifically, when to take them and
how to prepare.

Jack Li / Lynbrook High School 11th Grade / score 2370Dear
ThinkTank,Thank you for your SAT I Boot Camp class! It was very
helpful in getting me prepared for the SAT. The teachers were
helpful and knowledgeable. Thanks to them, I improved my scores
greatly.
Eric Hu / Lynbrook High School 12th Grade / score 2360 I really
enjoyed the class, and I thought it helped a lot towards improving
my score. For me, primarily, I thought the key to success was to
practice a lot. Although I had already done the practice tests from
the Barron's book, doing them over again really reinforced the
concepts in my head. I am grateful for TTLearning's course for the
SAT, because I feel that their course trains students, in the
respect that they receive adequate practice, and concentrate their
focus on each individual section. After mastering each section, the
combined training, and summation of the various tips and tricks
they teach you, really help to elevate your score.
Tyler Weng / Lowell High School 12th Grade / score: 2350While it
may sound hard t believe, at Think Tank, the instructors genuinely
want youyes you, the individualto succeed. Now then, you may ask
how can that be; why would they care? Admittedly, these instructors
begin as complete strangers to us, and yes, we only know them for
hours worth of time. While I cant really explain the why, I can
explain the how. Call me cheesy, but you can see it in the
instructors eyes. It tells you that they believe in you. It tells
you that they support you. It tells you that they know that you can
and you will do better, that you will succeed. It is the intangible
compassion that drives these teachers to help you, simultaneously
motivation you yourself to want to achieve more than you have ever
achieved before. At Think Tank, let the learning environment and
positive attitudes of the staff, faculty, and students embrace you.
Indulge in the education nirvana. Witness, first-hand, the effects
of awesome teaching!
Michelle Syu / Mission San Jose 12th Grade / score 2330Before I
took ThinkTanks SAT Boot camp course, my practice test scores didnt
even surpass a 2000. My critical reading scores were especially
low, sometimes not even at the 600 mark. However, with the help of
the SAT Boot camp over the summer before junior year, my scores
began to improve. The teachers were great; they kept the classes
interesting with games and brain teasers and taught me valuable
techniques for each of the sections. My final test resulted in a
2330, improving by almost 400 points. This course really motivated
me to study and I would recommend it to anyone. Thank you ThinkTank
Learning!
Scott Yuan / Los Altos High School 12th Grade / score 2260Thank
you to TTLearnings SAT prep course, I was able to improve
tremendously on my SAT Reasoning Test only within a couple months.
Their tutors very well specialize in what they teach and really got
the work done in whatever subject area I needed, especially in the
critical reading and writing sections.
Vania Chang / Saratoga High 12th Grade / score 2230 Without
Think Tank's help I would not have been able to improve my SAT
score by as I did; they even helped me exceed my ideal score. The
teachers are great and I really enjoyed the class. Thank you
ThinkTank Learning Center!

Starting September 2010, there was a pronounced change in the
trajectory of U.S. economic activity, as data that had stubbornly
disappointed for much of the year began to exhibit resolute
outperformance that continued for the balance of 2010.
Consequently, GDP growth shifted from a snail-like sub-2% rate to a
more virile 3%-plus and equity markets responded like a virtual
express elevator, finishing a strong year with one of the best
Decembers in recent memory. This momentum will continue in 2011 and
likely will accelerate throughout the year, a good sign for global
risky assets. Corporate profits growth, driven by strong global
demand, will persist. Business spending will surge on the passage
of tax incentives for capital spending, and the regulatory
environment should be more benign than anticipated. The game
changer in the U.S. is the resurgence of the consumer, exemplified
by surprisingly strong retail sales and personal income gains in
recent months. Overall, consumer spending is up sharply, and it
will only strengthen with a steadily improving employment
picture.
The economic expansion is unlikely to feel strong to observers,
particularly given recent experiences of more robust post-recession
growth. But, it will be enough to grow earnings and to keep default
rates for corporate borrowers low, supporting a variety of risky
assets. As such, 2011 is expected to be a positive year for
equities, with performance driven by attractive valuations,
abundant liquidity and a pickup in corporate spending. In the fixed
income space, meanwhile, certain strong performers from 2010
including emerging market debt and high yield bonds will likely
continue their rallies in 2011.

For the year, 2010 was a lesson in extreme volatility, market
resilience and the triumph of fundamentals over the aftershocks of
risk that emanated from the Great Recession. While the S&P 500
turned in a strong performance, reaching two-year highs and posting
year-to-date gains in the double digits, it was dominated by its
small- and mid-cap siblings; the S&P MidCap Index and the
S&P SmallCap Index delivered near-record annual return.
Our base scenario for 2011 is that global economy continues to
muddle through an unclear and ever-shifting environment. The
divergence between developed and emerging economies will continue,
with the former continuing to rebuild while the latter increases
its influence on the global stage. 2011 is expected to be a banner
year for U.S. economic activity, driven by a resurgent consumer,
accelerated business spending and continued demand from emerging
markets, along with a favorable and more-certain tax environment
for businesses and consumers.
