Taking a New Approach: The ACT,

In last month’s installment, we began discussions pertaining to the ACT. Much like the SAT, the ACT

is an exam used for evaluation in college admissions, although not as popular on the West Coast as the SAT. Regardless, the exam is considered as equivalent to the SAT, and it is accepted at as many colleges as the SAT. We also reviewed who should take the ACT. My recommendation is that everyone should take it, but it will be a particularly helpful test for students who tend to do better on “straightforward” tests rather than logic-oriented exams. While the SAT really tests students on test-taking ability, the ACT is more concerned with content and the student’s level of acquired knowledge. For this month, we’ll be speaking about the structure of the ACT, with scoring and general strategies regarding the approach to the ACT to come in next month’s article.

The Structure The ACT’s structure is rather different from that of the SAT, and that’s an issue with which students have to become acquainted before all else. Unlike the SAT, which has three sections on which students are scored, the ACT has five: English, Math, Reading, Writing, and Science Reasoning. Of course, the ACT is a longer exam than the SAT, with an additional 50 minutes of time allotted. The English and Reading sections of the ACT approximate the Critical Reading section of the SAT, with some parts of the SAT’s Writing section as well. Naturally, the Reading on the ACT is close to the Critical Reading section of the SAT. ACT’s English section is primarily a grammar test, but the questions are based on longer passages than the grammar questions on the SAT.

Math and Writing on the ACT are similar to the sections of the same name on the SAT with some minor differences. The allocation of questions in different fields of mathematics, for instance, has different areas of focus on either test. For the Writing section of the ACT, the prompt asked is less “intellectual” and a bit more intuitive than the essay portion of the Writing section of the SAT. Where the primary difference comes in the exams is in the area of Science Reasoning. The SAT, as we know, has no such section, and many students will opt out of taking the ACT as they don’t see themselves as “good at science.” The interesting part about the Science Reasoning section, though, is the fact that it requires no fundamental knowledge about science. In fact, knowledge of the science that’s included in the exam is largely irrelevant to scoring well on this section. To clarify, the Science Reasoning section deals primarily with the analysis of data. In other words, it gauges how well the student can think like a scientist when confronted with information. To get a bit more specific, the student is presented with three different types of passages: Data Representation, Research Summaries, and Conflicting Viewpoints. In all of these sections the structure is essentially the same: You’re confronted with data – in the form of pie charts, graphs, tables, and verbal content – and you need to figure out what’s going on with the information presented. For next month, we’ll speak about the most significant aspects of the ACT: scoring and strategies. In the meantime, if you’re interested in either learning more about the ACT or registering for the exam, visit the ACT website at www.act.org.

有藝術應該在以邏輯原則為基礎的社會裡被取締;

Blackboard

“Are you a fuzzy or a techie?” During high school, I would have been confused at what

this question meant, let alone know how to respond. Yet, years ago as a college freshman, I learned this would be an unavoidable question for a Stanford undergraduate. I entered college as a pre-med. At least that’s what I told my parents, who told me to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. I wasn’t fully convinced, though, so decided to keep an open mind while I took classes in both the sciences and humanities. Chem 32, Introduction to Chemistry, was filled with lots of other pre-meds. While I didn’t love chemistry, I understood the concepts well and my aptitude with numbers was strong. (I scored 100 on my first mid-term and would wind up with an A in the class.) Meanwhile, in the dorm, most of the people that I met were interested in engineering and computer science. They were “techies,” lured to Stanford in the wake of the recent dot.com boom and learning their trade at the gateway to Silicon Valley. Various students were interested in poetry, art, and languages as well; some of them even saw themselves as “techies.” Conversation was often about movies, music, and, occasionally, books. We would often interrupt our reading to go on the Internet to watch the video stream of pirated movies and download .mp3 files of songs from Napster. The question “Are you a techie or fuzzy?” was often dropped by way of getting to know someone new.In my IHUM (Introduction to the Humanities) course, I learned that subjects like art and philosophy, literature and history, were “fuzzy.” We read philosophers like Plato, who argued that all art should outlawed

Fuzzy vs. Techie: Straddling Stanford’s Academic Schism

in a society based on logical principles, Aristotle, who looked at art like a scientist, and Nietzsche, who looked at knowledge and science like an artist. Through a digital projector, we viewed slides of Impressionist paintings, which were made up of bits of color, like pixels on a computer screen. I devoured the Odyssey at intervals in between posting comments to discussion threads on the class webpage on Blackboard. In reading this book, which, to the Greeks, was like a movie, poem, and song all in one, I felt something more powerful than in finding the mass of products of chemical reactions. I would come to conclude that I was more “fuzzy” than “techie.” I eventually quit pre-med and studied literature and philosophy instead. While I majored in “fuzzy” disciplines, my friends remained mostly “techies.” But are the two mutually exclusive? I had both programmer friends and poet friends; some were both. My EE friend learned 7 languages, studied Taoist philosophy, and eventually left a job with Intel in Japan to become a hypnotist. While I delved into Shakespeare and the Diamond Sutra, I often felt that I was at a “tech” school. However, for those with the curiosity and energy to explore the vast resources available, it can be the best of both worlds. At Stanford, whether you lean towards “fuzzy” or “techie,” you are always confronted with a reality in which one always involves the other. I’ll be continuing this discussion of Stanford next month. In the meantime, though, consider what I’ve said about Stanford, and think about if Stanford is the right school for you.

Facebook

Ben

An Ivy State of Mind■ By Jason Wu is a Yale graduate who took his degree in English. He currently serves as a consultant for ThinkTank Learning.

During high school, I thought I had a pretty good idea about the kind of students I would meet at

college. They would be just like the elect of the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri- the kids I knew from school or camp or debate- polished, sharp, and good at math. Everyone was, after all, more or less the same. We were Westernized, smart (but not bookish), and members of the landed gentry. How could anyone be different? And indeed, the description held. The central truth about the kids at Yale was that they were, at a glance, so unremarkable. I was the only one to go from my high school that year, but dozens of us could have passed for Eli Yale. All it took was an easy confidence and an air of well-adjustedness. Only the awkward went to Harvard. By and by I started to refine my thinking. The first exception was my roommate, Ben. I began to suspect that something was up when he introduced himself on facebook the summer before freshman year by writing a haiku on my wall. I was frankly a little put off- I didn’t know what to expect- but once I made my way on campus I discovered that Ben was a perfectly reasonable San Francisco hipster (my geography was vague at the time—later I discovered he went to Paly). He knew what “hyphy” meant and could get down like a b-boy, even though he had the tall, spare build of the cross-country runner he once was. He had also done debate in high school, but somehow he hadn’t grown beholden to it. Who was he? The second exception was my suitemate, Arden. He came from a double-legacy family—his parents had

met at Bronx Science and had continued together to Yale. One room in his family’s house was devoted to his father’s collection of newspapers; he had insisted on keeping a copy of each issue of the last thirty years of the New York Times. His grandmother had played a madam in the James Dean version of East of Eden, and won an Oscar (best supporting actress, 1955) for her efforts. Arden was similarly distinguished. He had developed a comprehensive knowledge of rock, and was a gifted practitioner of noblesse oblige (Once he quizzed me about the Beatles poster on his wall, ca. A Hard Day’s Night. I was to identify the Beatle from his haircut; I confused Ringo with George). Eventually I became the third exception. I had started Yale on the Asian-American track- math competitions, Biology Olympiads, inveterate test-taking. But during the second semester of my freshman year, I took a class with an old Chaucerian, a New Historicist who was preparing to retire. He had reared a child when he was a student at Yale, in the 60s, and had been one of the few Americans to make good on a promise to move to Canada during Vietnam. We studied Ulysses, and I became an English major. So it’s true what they say- college really does change you. I’ll be continuing this column next month, with further insight on the Ivy League mentality. Up until this time, do your own research on Ivy League schools. Of course, everyone wants to attend, but are these really the schools for you? This is a question that only you can answer.

(Graduated From):B.S. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology – UC Davis任教科目 (Teaches):英文(English)、生物學(Biology)、化學(Chemistry)、數學(Math) As a devoted student of science, I graduated from the University of California, Davis with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology. I am passionate about academic maturity, which entails a personal desire to capture the core fundamentals of those academic disciplines that one studies. My goal is to instill this type of novel inspiration in the young minds of today’s students. With this passion, I practice success-

minded tutoring in Math (and up to SAT level Math), Chemistry, Biology, and English (up to SAT level) with students who hopefully have genuine desire to understand their world through science and experience. Additionally, my philospophy of teaching lies in understanding the student as an individual and on having the patience to help the student mature academically and personally in the way that he/she does best. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, running with my dogs, reading novels, camping, exploring new cities, and studying to strengthen my grasp on molecular biology. My favorite novels are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Grapes of Wrath, and December is my favorite time of the year because I love visiting Christmas in the Park in San Jose!

(Graduated From):M.S. in Chemistry, Clemson University-SC.

Mindy received her MS and PhD degrees in Chemistry from Clemson University-SC, where she was honored twice by the Outstanding Graduate Student Award for her performance as a teaching assistant and as a research assistant. She has many years of experience of teaching, lecturing and tutoring high school and college level chemistry courses in the U.S. and abroad. She has mentored high school, undergraduate and graduate students through summer and year around research internship programs. In addition to her academic teaching background, she also has many years of academic research and federal research laboratory experience as a research scientist and as a project lead at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque-NM and Livermore-CA. She currently holds 4 U.S. registered patents, has published more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has delivered over 30 presentations at national and international conferences. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, baking, pottery, pilates, soccer, movies and loves to spend time and to travel with her husband and their lovely dog Xena. [I believe that motivation and inspiration are the key elements of teaching. The traits that I envision to pass on to my students are my passion for chemistry and my love for learning. When my students have learned chemistry properly, I believe that they have “learned how to learn” and in turn, they will benefit from this heritage not only during their high school education but also for the rest of their lives.]

(Fremont Center)May Mar教育程度(Graduated From):B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, University of California, Davis 任教科目(Teaches):生物學(Biology)

May received her BS degree in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior. She has extensive experience in tutoring students from junior high school to college level, especially local high school curriculum. Although she majored in Biology, May tutored some General and Organic Chemistry in college. Throughout high school, she enjoyed tutoring children for after school programs in a variety of topics. Many of her students struggle to learn Biology because of the details and complex concepts; however, with the use of May's interesting analogies and examples the students are better able to grasp the concept. Her philosophy is to teach the students the basic and complex concepts of Biology so that each student can apply Biology to their every day life. In her spare time, she enjoys watching the latest movies, eating, spending time with her family, and keeping up with the local news.

Prior to 2010, there was an income limit of $100,000 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) (single or married)

to convert traditional IRA assets to Roth IRA assets. In 2010, the income limit is removed if you want to convert your traditional IRA to a Roth. In other words: “Now, everyone can have a Roth IRA.” But just because you can convert to a Roth IRA doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. As a general rule, tax planners advise against paying a tax today that you can defer until a later date. Of course, there are always exceptions to any general rule, and converting to a Roth IRA may well be one of them. Note: An individual with a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of $120,000 or more, or a married couple with a MAGI of $177,000 or more will not be able to make any new contributions.Q: Who should consider a Roth 2010 Conversion?A: You may find the Roth conversion attractive if:•You believe that future tax rates will be greater than today.•You wish to leave a potential tax-free legacy to a non-spouse beneficiary. A younger beneficiary could potentially make tax-free withdrawals over decades.•You can benefit from multiple years of tax-deferred compounding and ultimately potentially tax-free income.•You have made significant after-tax IRA contributions minimizing potential tax consequences.•You can afford to pay the taxes using non-IRA assets. Paying taxes using IRA assets can result in a 10% penalty if the individual is under age 59½ and will reduce the amount that will be available for a tax free distribution.A Q: What if the value of my IRA falls after I convert in 2010?A: You can choose to recharacterize your Roth IRA as a traditional IRA on or before October 15, 2011.

Roth IRA – Convert, Undo and Reconvert…

The end result is that the recharacterization amount is treated as if it was never converted for tax purposes, and therefore not included in the individual’s income. The IRA can then be reconverted to a Roth IRA, adjusted for 2011 earnings or losses after 30 days have passed. If conversion and recharacterization occur in the same calendar year, reconversion cannot occur until the following year. Q: What is re-characterization?A : Recharacterization is essential ly the Roth Conversion “Free Look”. The Roth conversion rules permit recharacterization, basically allowing taxpayers to change their minds and undo a Roth conversion, within certain limits. If you recharacterize, the entire amount in the Roth must be recharacterized. You cannot pick and choose assets to move based on which ones gained and which ones lost value. Because of that limitation in the conversion rules, some taxpayers have adopted strategies for converting single traditional individual retirement accounts into several separate Roth accounts. If they change their mind, they can recharacterize only the Roth IRA accounts that hold the losers. The decision to recharacterize must be made by the due date for filing your tax return for the calendar year in which you convert (including extensions, whether or not you extend). Example: If Peter Pan converts his traditional IRA to a Roth IRA at any time during 2010, he has until October 15, 2011 to recharacterize. Recharacterization essentially erases the transaction and any resulting tax liability.

Troy Belting and Supply Company
