Minute with the Mayor October, 2015

As we approach fall things continue to be busy and the Town Public Works Employees are getting

projects wrapped in anticipation of the winter months. The Town was able to accomplish some items

this summer. There are always many things to accomplish and sometimes things are not

accomplished as fast as people may like. We attempt to make lists of priorities to efficiently

complete. The Town appreciates your cooperation and support as we work to improve the Town.

The addition to the Town shop is now taking shape. This new part of the building will house the

office and free up room in the existing shop for other things and an expanded working space. This

addition is long overdue and I am sure the Town Public Works employees will enjoy having the

office space.

The Recreation Board is up and functioning. The last few meetings have been well represented by

the various community organizations. The Recreation Board is co-chaired by Angie Mattson and

Kelly Greenaway. The focus of the Recreation Board so far will be updating the bylaws and

completing a new system for the submission of grant requests. We encourage those organizations

needing assistance to contact the Recreation Board for information. Applications can be picked up at

the Town Office.

This year the Grinch is coming….. On Saturday, November 14th children have the opportunity to

meet and have their picture taken with the Grinch. The Grinch will be at the Christmas Market from

11:00 – 1:00. You are able to take your own pictures as a keepsake. Please take time to come out and

see the Grinch.

The Community in Blooms organization will continue in the Town next year as Daniel Parsons will

be the new Chairperson of the Board. The organization continues to look for volunteers to help with

various aspects of planting, weeding and general care of the various community garden areas. For a

small community we have several very creative and attractive areas. If you are interested in getting

involved with CIB please drop your name off at the Town Office. Please watch for more details in

the coming months about plans for the spring.

Just a quick reminder about complaints. If you have a concern or issue you would like to address to

Council please remember to make the complaint in writing. Once the complaint has been filed with

the Town Office it will be discussed at the next Council meeting.

The Town has contracted the services of a bylaw enforcement officer to assist us in enforcing some

of the existing bylaws. The Officer works on a part time basis and has some specific projects on the

go. Town Council would like to remind residents bylaws are enacted for the greater good and have

been implemented because of various concerns. We would appreciate compliance to the bylaws. If

you are ever unsure of specific issues please contact the Town Office or any member of the Town

Council.

I appreciate any comments or concerns that you would like addressed in the next Minute with the

Mayor. Please either drop off the question at the Town Office or email me directly at

[email protected].

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a program whereby a community organization, in

collaboration with Canada

Revenue Agency (CRA) arranges for volunteers to prepare tax returns for eligible individuals who are unable

to prepare their own returns. The CRA provides training and tax software for the volunteers.

As a CVITP volunteer, you will prepare returns for individuals who have a low to moderate income and a

simple tax return. You cannot charge for your services and must decline any offers of monetary reward.

CRA provides guidance, training, software and promotional materials. Training sessions are doing by webinar.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community. By volunteering, you will be giving back to the community,

help residents maintain uninterrupted access to benefits and entitlements, increase your personal tax

knowledge, gain new skills and improve existing ones and do work that is valued and recognized.

If there is an organization in the Town of Lashburn who is willing to manage the program by following the

CVITP policies and procedures and arranging for volunteers, please contact the Town Office for the related

Guide and Handbooks that have been sent to the Town for distribution to any interested organization.
