ROAD TO PYEONGCHANG By: ADWAITH HARIHARAN
The upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics,
officially titled [the] XXXII Olympic Winter Games and more commonly known as Pyeongchang 2018, is a major multi-sport event drawing elite athletes from all over the world. As the name suggests, it is scheduled to take place in less than a month, from February 9th to 25th, 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The Winter Olympics, much like its big brother, the Summer Olympics, is a major sporting event held every four years. Did you know that until 1992, the Winter and Summer Olympic Games were held in the same year? In 1986, the IOC decided to place the Summer and Winter Games on separate four-year cycles in alternating even-numbered years, thus giving birth to the existing cycle of Olympic Games. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
By: Max Druckman (****SPOILER ALERT****)
On December 15, 2017 sci-fi zealots will be delighted as Star Wars: The Last
Jedi will be released. The Last Jedi is the eighth installment in the Star Wars saga and
the ninth Star Wars film to hit the theaters.
The film is the successor to 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In The Force
Awakens, viewers learn that in the aftermath of the Galactic Empire, a new evil power
has awakened: the First Order. This vicious army is led by the mysterious Supreme
Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren, the son of Princess Leia and Han Solo, two beloved
characters from the original movies. Ren aspires to become a malevolent force as
powerful as Darth Vader, his grandfather.
Although not much is known about The Last Jedi yet, multiple previews have
been released. Through the previews, fans have learned that Luke is training Rey in the
ways of the Jedi. However, her power is so immense that Luke realizes that it is not a
clever idea to train her. In addition, we learn that Kylo Ren is struggling with the fact
that he killed his father and must make the dangerous choice of whether or not to kill his
mother. According to cast and crew members, the plot will be unlike any fan could have
predicted.
Review:
Overall, my first thought on The Last Jedi is that it was downright awesome!
Most film review websites second this opinion. The movie received a 92% “Certified
Fresh” rating on the RottenTomatoes.com. This rating is one percent behind The Last
Jedi’s predecessor, The Force Awakens. Additionally, the film received a 7.8/10 on
IMDB.com. Even though there is some positive praise, there was some negative
criticism directed toward The Last Jedi. For example, Joe Morgenstern of the Wall
Street Journal quoted, “This eighth episode of the franchise will be porgnip for the
faithful, though the answer to one of its Big Questions seems disappointing, and
generously entertaining for the rest of us.” Morgenstern was trying to express the
disappointment of classic Star Wars aficionados, who believe that the movie was a level
down from classic Star Wars movies and did not answer fans’ burning questions as it
should have. For instance, who are Rey’s parents? In the plot, her parents were said to
be nobodies on the desert planet Jakku. Fans were anticipating an answer, but I guess
we’ll have to wait for the next installment.
New and Exciting P3
iPhone X By Dipanshu Verma

People will be rushing to the stores to get their hands on the latest iPhone, as they always do when any new iPhone comes out. This version trademarks the iPhone’s tenth anniversary and Apple has added many new features for this device! One brand new feature is face identification. This feature has caused a lot of controversy! Some believe that the phone won’t be able to unlock when they're wearing makeup. Others are concerned that someone else can access their phone when they’re asleep simply by putting the phone in front of them. Luckily, Apple has reassured customers that the device only scans facial features like your nose, eyes, and mouth, so makeup won’t affect the scan. Also, your eyes have to be open to access face ID, so customers can sleep in peace. Another feature of this iPhone is the new camera. Apple claims that you can do 4k video recording at 24, 30, or 60 fps(frames per second). iPhone X users are excited to have the ability to record videos at a quality that is far better than most other phones. In addition, the camera now has portrait mode. This mode allows you to change or improve the lighting of a photo. The camera is also vertical now instead of horizontal, which may be hard for some users to get used to. The last major change to the new iPhone X is the fact that it is all screen. Apple has removed the bezels, or the borders between the screen and the edge of the phone. Bezels were always a source of frustration for customers. Apple has finally fixed this issue with a new 5.8 inch screen with absolutely no bezels. Some other minor changes include wireless charging, new emojis, and more storage. This new iPhone comes at a whopping $999, and if you're willing to pay, it can definitely be an upgrade.

Winter Album Reviews By Robert Davin
Queen - Innuendo (1991) Oh boy, this album was a doozie to make. It was the last
album made by lead singer Freddie Mercury before his sad
death, and it’s quite a delicate album to listen to, physically
and mentally because of the sad sound of the music and
lyrics. It truly is an album made from heaven. It shows off
the some of the most experimental vocal tracks on songs like
“I’m Going Slightly Mad,” and the legendary “The Show
Must Go On.”
An obvious 9/10, only because of a slight problem with the
title track.
George Harrison - Living In The Material World
(1973) Harrison’s album, Living in the Material World, did not live
up to the success of its predecessor, but it is still considered
a classic by many. Its lead single, “Give Me Love (Give Me
Peace on Earth)” hit #1 several months before the album’s
release! The album was certainly a major success, becoming
one of the most popular that year, and beating his former
Beatles bandmates’ albums released at the same time (John’s
Mind Games, Paul’s Band On The Run and Ringo’s
RINGO). I am a personal fan of this album, as I like its grass
roots while still taking from the acoustic sound of the
previous record. Harrison took his time on this record, as he
announced it shortly after the release of All Things Must
Pass, but its release was almost 2 ½ years later!
I give this album an 8/10, because I was expecting the
follow-up to the biggest album of the decade.
Paul McCartney - RAM (1971)
Perhaps the most successful solo Beatle, Paul McCartney
gets creative in this classic. He collaborates with his wife,
Linda. It’s truly an early incarnation of his future band
Wings. On classics like “Too Many People,” “Ram On,”
“and “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,” Paul hits the blues and
roots chords and all are considered brilliant. Paul goes damp
on “The Back Seat” and “Heart Of The Country.” He gets
downright bizarre with “Monkberry Moon Delight” and
“Smile Away.” This album is a classic, but it didn’t do well
on the charts! Not all favorites now were successful in their
time. 9/10.
The Sounds Of Greatness By Caroline Clinton Music. It's a simple but powerful word. Some may ask, “How is music powerful?” Music is powerful because the sound of it gets into your bones and makes you dance. Music can get into your head and make you sing. Most people listen to music when they are bathing, running, working out, at parties and so many other places. Music calms people. Music gets people happy and excited. Sometimes music affects people in ways you can’t see. Have you ever been at school or work and just start tapping your foot to a beat in your head? Have you ever started singing that catchy new song on the radio? You don't realize music is everywhere. People make music for teaching lessons, for love, and sadness. Anything you feel like you can make a song and that song can make an impact on someone’s life. Musicians today like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran all sing popular music. Today's hits are mostly pop. Most radio stations play the top fifty songs repeatedly because they are popular and more listeners get the stations more money. And then when you’re sitting at work or school and you start tapping your foot to that song it your head, you realize, it sticks to you, doesn't it? Have you hear “New Rules” by Dua Lipa or “Believer” by Imagine Dragons? Do you think they’re catchy? Most people would say yes, but some will say no. And that's normal. I love music like a lot of other people do. Hopefully you too can realize the power of music.
Cycle Classes: How they Benefit
your Future By Jomana Hafez, Olivia Perrotta, Caitlin
Sobel, and Fallon O’Connell
Cycle classes come with the opportunity to
learn practical skills in a creative way. These
classes, and the teachers who conduct them, can
have a big educational impact on your future. At
this point in the school year, most students are
probably at least familiar with all of the seventh
grade cycle classes, but maybe not the teachers.
Today we will take an in-depth, first-hand look at
the five cycle classes, and, with the help of the
teachers’ input, explore the effect they can have
on your future. These classes for seventh graders
are Music with Mr. Roscigno, Computers with
Mrs. Moyle, Stembotics with Mr. Epps, Art with
Mr. Hughes, and STEAM with Mr.Foy.
First, let’s explore Music. Did you know that
Mr. Rosigno comes from a musical family? His
father was a professional musician and his own
music teachers had a big impact on him. When he
was in middle school, he realized that he wanted
to become a music teacher. Music is Mr.
Roscigno's entire life! He loves making people
joyful when he plays songs and puts on
performances. In Mr. Roscigno’s class, students
will complete many different projects and
assignments on various musical topics, including
how to create a song, identifying different
composers, music history, and sequencing and
looping. Mr. Roscigno’s favorite project to do is
My Pavitra Project. This project takes place
during careers and music week. Students design a
guitar and create an advertisement campaign for
the instrument! In this 36-day cycle you only
scratch the surface of music. Mr. Roscigno wants
students to understand that music is “so much
more than background noise” and he encourages
students to “embrace it.” Exploring different
genres of music teaches students to be open
minded, which is an invaluable skill that students
can take away from music class! The most
important piece of advice that Mr. Roscigno
wants to give is “don’t overlook music.”
Our next cycle is Computer Literacy. Mrs.
Moyle is the seventh grade computer teacher here
at MEMS. She was once a human resources
director. Why did she become a computer
teacher? Well, she loves working with kids,
especially seventh graders. She also wanted to do
something that interested her more. Another job
interest Mrs. Moyle had was becoming a
computer scientist, but in order to become a
computer scientist, she needed to be good at math.
She states, “I wasn’t the best in math, so it
would be hard for me to pursue that career.”
Most of all, she loves how simple and easy it
is to use technology. One of her favorite programs
is Inspiration. Inspiration is a mind mapping tool
that helps students use technology to study and
organize their thoughts. You don’t use this
program in her class though. In Computer
Literacy, students learn about binary numbers,
and how to use programs like Google Forms,
Google Docs, Microsoft Excel and much more.
According to Mrs. Moyle, this class will
benefit your future, as you will “now understand
computer science and how it is simple and easy to
do.” She adds that Computer Literacy helps to
build students’ problem-solving skills, which can
benefit them in all classes.
Mrs. Moyle wants her students to know that
computer science is not beyond them! Today,
most jobs are technology and computer-based, so
you need to understand how computers and
different software works. Her class is clearly
beneficial to student success!
Our third cycle here at MEMS, STEMbotics
taught by Mr. Epps. In STEMbotics you get to
build and code robots. It may seem simple, but it’s
very complex. STEMbotics can offer many
students jobs in the future, which is a major
benefit. Mr. Epps explains, “Almost every part of
commercial society uses programming behind the
scenes. It can also be fun and help you to think
logically.” Programming can include a variety of
areas. For example, building cars requires
stronger programming. A a mistake in the
program could badly injure drivers and their
passengers, so programming must be done with
the utmost care. Programming has two main
(Cont. on page 7)

Around MEMS P6
requirements, according to Mr. Epps: Logic and
creativity. Mr. Epps became interested in STEM
through his oldest son. He found traditional
programming very intimidating, but when his son
took an online scratch class, it made him realize
the basics of programming can be taught through
“drag and drop” programs. Mr. Epps also gave
some pointers for exceling in his class. “Be on
time, stay focused, but most of all be willing to
persevere.”
The EV3 robots themselves have to be
assembled correctly for them to work. “It can be a
real test of your patience, creativity and insight,”
says Mr. Epps. “Structure, support, and a fun
collaborative environment” is what he says is
necessary for his students to learn best. The class
is very beneficial to your future because we live in
a technology and programming-based world.
STEMbotics can be a good field to get into
because there is much technology in today’s
society.
Mr. Foy teachers STEAM, which stands for
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and,
Mathematics. In his class students get to apply
their creativity and building skills through the
video game, Minecraft. In Mr. Foy’s class
students use their skills to build an attraction in
Minecraft based on a book. For example, one
group did their project on Percy Jackson. Mr. Foy
describes, “With a heavy emphasis on creativity
and design, students in STEAM Academy
collaborate to create and develop a theme park
attraction. At different moments, students are
designing blueprints, developing a virtual
simulation in Minecraft, or creating a video. By
the end of the course, all groups deliver
presentations that highlight their attraction.”
Did you know that Mr. Foy was a language
arts teacher? He realized that he was interested in
STEAM while visiting different colleges with his
son. He thought that MEMS needed a class like
STEAM to make school exciting and to put all the
other classes to use. Mr. Foy loves his job, and
loves interacting with his students. He also sees
teaching in an interesting way. He says,
“Teaching has been a way for me to incorporate
all of my personal interests into a career. Where
else can I share my love of Disney and get to play
XBox on a daily basis? Oh, and sometimes I help
make a difference in a student’s life.” Mr. Foy
appreciates when his students are motivated and
use their creativity in his class. “When my
students are excited by their accomplishments and
eager to share them with me, I know that it’s been
a good day.” Mr. Foy also brings his background
in Language Arts to the class. He claims, “The
class is designed to mimic the experience of how
Disney Imagineers develop attractions for Disney
Parks, and the most important aspect of any
Disney attraction is always the story. I use my
background as a Language Arts teacher to help set
the foundation for all attractions with a strong
story concept. Every aspect of the attraction
should help tell the story. If the attraction doesn’t
tell a story, it’s an amusement park ride, not a
theme park attraction.”
Lastly, for the students that haven’t taken his
class yet, Mr. Foy has some pointers. “To be
successful in my class, it’s very simple: Be nice
and work hard. My class consists mainly of group
work. Students need to work well with others and
stay focused on the task at hand. Problems only
occur when one or more group members don’t
complete their share of the work.” In addition to
all of the other skills that students acquire from
STEAM, learning to work with peers is a major
benefit.
Art is the fifth and final cycle, taught by Mr.
Hughes. His interest in art began when he was
very little. He was inspired by his uncle. Art was
always his favorite class, but he didn’t know that
he was going to be an art teacher until college. All
he knew for sure was that he was going to pursue
a career in art.
Mr. Hughes believes that his students do not
have to be good at drawing to succeed in his class.
He believes that if students simply try their best
and learn new styles of art, then the students will
do well in his class. Mr. Hughes also thinks that if
young artists keep on practicing, they will get
better at art. He understands because he used to be
a young artist as well. Mr. Hughes’ favorite style
of painting is Japanese Sumi-e paintings. He
thinks this type of art is unique.
Art class has many benefits for students. It
(Cont. on page 8)

teaches patience and perseverance, especially to
those who struggle with artistic ability. In conclusion, cycle classes, and the teachers
who teach them, can have a big impact on
students’ futures. STEMbotics, Computers, Art,
Music, and STEAM are not only fun, but they can
help you get a good job. They teach skills that
students can apply to their other classes and to
their lives. Which one of these will be YOUR
favorite?

MEMS 2017 Winter Concert By: Sarah Chung On December seventh, twenty-seventeen, the seventh and eighth grade MEMS band, orchestra, and select vocal ensemble performed their winter concert! In the eighth grade band, four pieces of holiday music were played. Three Christmas pieces were included: “Elf Dance,” “All I want for Christmas is You,” and “Holiday Bobsled Run.” For Hanukkah, the piece “SHALOM! V’ha’ir Shushan & Havdala” (movement one) was played. “Elf Dance” is a very repetitive song with a very catchy, happy beat. “All I Want For Christmas,” an all-time holiday favorite song, sung by Mariah Carey, was performed by the band. The band practiced very hard for this song! “Holiday Bobsled Run” is a song with sleigh bells and has a huge holiday vibe to it. “SHALOM! V’ha’ir Shushan & Havdala” was a very difficult song to play, but is enjoyable to hear in order to boost the holiday spirit. The seventh grade band also performed four holiday pieces. Three Christmas songs and one Hanukkah song. For Christmas, “Noel,” “Drummer’s Christmas Carol,” and “On a Snowy Winter’s Eve” were performed. As for Hanukkah, “Hanukkah Festival of Lights” was played. All seem to be great pieces, and many look forward to hearing them play at their first MEMS concert! As for the orchestra, seventh and eighth graders played beautifully together. They played the songs “Pachelbel Canon,” “Hallelujah Chorus,” “Believe,” and “Chanukah oh Chanukah.” “Pachelbel Canon” is a song that starts slow off in the beginning and then develops into a very elegant and peaceful melody. “Hallelujah Chorus” is an energetic and happy song that will lift the holiday spirits. “Believe,” from “Polar Express” is a song that has a magical, uplifting Christmas feel. Finally, “Chanukah Oh Chanukah” is very cheerful and upbeat. The audience couldn’t help but to clap along! All those who participated in the concert prepared and practiced hard! The music was lively and energetic and got the audience in the holiday spirit.

Is Watching Horror Movies Good for Your Health?
By Aditya Chowdhury
Horror. The name itself sends a chill down one’s spine. But can watching a horror movie
actually be good for your health? Based on current studies, such films can help you burn calories and
give you a better mood. In order for this to happen, however, viewers actually need to be interested in
watching a horror movie.
The way these movies help burn calories is very science-driven. When people get startled, their
bodies produce adrenaline, which triggers the fight-or-flight mechanism. This draws energy from their
bodies’ reserve, which will lead to calorie burn. The same study also shows that watching horror
movies can make people stressed, but a good stress. Good stress is a brief moment of stress, and it
improves immune function and activation. This means that there is better protection against diseases.
In addition to that, another benefit of horror movies is that they can elevate a person’s mood.
Finally, to get all of these affects, individuals need to be willing to watch the movies. If someone
is forced to watch it, the effects result. One study showed that participants that viewed The Shining
burned 184 calories, which is “...the equivalent of the number of calories a 140-pound adult would
burn after 40 minutes of walking.”
In conclusion, horror movies are indeed good for overall health. They can burn calories and
improve your immune system, as well as improve your mood. Even though there are certain
parameters to these benefits, they can take affect….if you are willing to get scared. Information courtesy of time.com
Full Moon Theories
By Isabella Zurzolo
There have been many theories about full moons and how they bring out mischief in people. Strange events can happen on nights with a full moon. Fortunately, vampires and werewolves aren’t going to be roaming around your house. Though, you probably know that people can act a little odd on full moon nights. But is this actually true?
Have you ever been in a hospital on a full moon night? Probably not, but if you have, you may have noticed things are more busy. Doctors and nurses have claimed that full moon nights are crazier than nights when the moon is dimmer. Researchers think this has more to do with physiology than reality. Take a minute to think about this: Are nights when the moon is full really crazier than nights when the moon is less lit up? Or can this just be a theory that we believe to be true, so we take events that happen and believe them to be more extreme?
Studies have shown that the phases of the moon really can’t have an impact on our
mood or actions. But what researchers have seen is that people seem to be more active on full moon nights. This may be because the moon draws more light and makes people want to be more active. The more people that are out, the more actions that will happen. And of course one potential action is the committing of crimes. That’s why people believe full moon nights have more crime than other nights.

The Best Sneaker Releases of 2017
By Ryan Scwartz
The year 2017 was a good year for sneakerheads. A ton of new Yeezys, Jordans, Nikes, and
Adidas shoes dropped. Of all of the great releases, only a few can be the best. Here is our list.
10. The Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Zebra” The Zebra colorway of the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 looked to be the most successful release of 2017. In February 2017, that is. When they first came out, in late February 2017, people went crazy. When notorious leaker, Yeezy Mafia, announced in early June 2017 that the Zebras would be restocking and releasing, people who had purchased the February Zebras for high prices were not very happy. After the second release, the resale value of the Zebras dropped down about $500-600. Photo credit StockX.com 9. The Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Bred” Releasing around the same time as the original Zebras, this shoe’s value went up after the second Zebra release. Because these shoes were more available than the original Zebras, they were not worth as much as the latter. After the Zebras rereleased, the value of the Breds flew up. Part of the reason the Breds have a value to them now is that they are a color that goes with almost anything. Photo credit goes to Solesupremacy.com 8. The Nike Air Jordan 11 “Win Like 96”
Kicking off the hype in December was the Air Jordan 11 “Win Like 96.” This shoe is commemorating Michael Jordan’s 72-10 season with the Bulls, in 1996. This shoe sold out in hours, as it is an Air Jordan 11 in an almost all red colorway, which has never been seen before. However, there have been a lot of colorways with red, which is why this shoe was slightly less popular than the next sneaker. Credit goes to Kicksonfire.com 7. The Nike Air Jordan 11 “Win Like ‘82” The Holidays always bring an Air Jordan 11. And this Air Jordan 11 made it onto our list. Releasing in early November, this shoe sold out in hours. The Air Jordan 11 is arguably the most popular Air Jordan, so it made sense that these would sell out. The colorway and name are supposed to reference Michael Jordan’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina (UNC) and the championship he led them to in 1982. Credit goes to Solecollector.com

When images of this shoe first surfaced, people did not know what to think. As time went on, closer to the release, the hype built up. However, these shoes do not have a resale value similar to the value of the Zebras in February. The Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Blue Tint” The trend continues, as Yeezys flood this list. The year’s last release, the Blue Tint, was the second largest released Yeezy. This was the first Yeezy to ever feature a blue color, hence the name Blue Tint. Credit goes to Hypebeast.com 3. The Yeezy Boost 350 V2 “Beluga 2.0” This pair of Yeezy Boost 350 V2 was the most widely available pair on the market, so it only made sense that they would be popular. This pair released in Mid-November. These shoes are a very popular colorway, like the Breds, as they both can be matched with almost anything. Just like black and red go with a lot of outfits, so do orange and grey. On November 30th, about 18,000 pairs from cancelled orders were restocked on the Adidas website. Many people took an instant liking to this colorway because it was highly customizable as well as flexible to match with clothes. Immediately after the release of these shoes, many people started customizing them in crazy ways. Some poured Slurpees in them to dye them, dyed them with Pepto Bismol, or even simply painting them. Fun Stuff P11 And The Best Sneaker of 2017 Goes To… 1. The Nike Jordan 1 Off White
This sneaker was voted by many sneakerheads as the best sneaker of the year. When people thought that Adidas would take Nike’s spot as #1, Nike came back and surprised everyone with this collaboration. With an exclusive NYC release in September, these pairs were extremely hard to come by. The wider release, taking place in November, was no different. It was almost impossible to get. Resale prices have stayed at a steady $1,000. Luckily for most people, there is a rumored part two coming out in 2018. Credit goes to footwearnews.com
Chef Ben’s Ultimate S’mores Pie By Chef Ben Perle and Sous Chef Gianni Romano
Something people might not know about your favorite chef is that I love cooking with
fire. The smell of a good meal cooking on an open fire is as soothing as watching Bob
Ross paint! And since you can’t have a fire without s’mores, here is an easy and finger-
lickin’ good recipe for a s’mores pie.
Difficulty: Rare
Ingredients:
14 ounces milk chocolate chips
3/4 cup heavy cream
One 9-inch prepared graham cracker crust
15 marshmallows
Directions:
Combine the chocolate chips and cream in a large microwave-safe bowl and heat
for 2 1/2 minutes. Stir until completely smooth (the chocolate may appear
separated at first, but just keep stirring). Pour into the prepared pie crust, loosely
cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until set, about 4 hours or up to overnight.
Preheat the broiler.
Use kitchen shears to cut each marshmallow in half, on a bias, from one corner to
the opposite corner. Arrange the marshmallow halves, cut-side down, on top of
the chilled pie. Broil until golden, watching closely and rotating the pan as
needed, about 1 minute. Let the pie cool completely, then cover loosely with
plastic wrap and return to the fridge until the ganache sets again, 1 to 2 hours.
