MONTPELIER TODAY 4 SEPT/OCT 2016

2016 Annual Montpelier Community Associa on Mee ng September 25, 2016

2pm – Pool

Every year at this me, our community is invited to vote for a new board and to come together to take part in your annual community mee ng. One Sunday a ernoon, for a few hours, we come together to acknowledge our board and commi ee members who so unselfishly serve to make our community the best and a fun, safe place to reside. Our current President, Bob Der-rick and the board members, review the highlights of the past year and future of the communi-ty. Various speakers are invited to come and discuss security issues and other issues that may affect our community. This is also a me to bring up issues that you may be concerned or pre-sent ideas to help the community. With our community running so smoothly over the past years, I am concerned that many have become complacent. We are fortunate to have a great board and many people to give of their

me to make our community great! But, it takes involvement from you and our neighbors to help keep this going. Just as with the na onal elec on, you need to be informed! Please consider coming out for your annual mee ng and most importantly, please vote! Last year, out of 695 homes, only 53 ballots were received. That is less than 8% of the total number of homes in Montpelier.

TOP 7 Reasons YOU should attend YOUR Annual Meeting and Vote

1. Come down and savor the last a ernoon at the pool before the gates close for

the season. 2. Great way to meet neighbors – especially if you are new to the Community.

3. See how you can get involved in YOUR community!

4. Meet and thank your outgoing board members for all they do to keep your community a beau ful, fun, and safe community to live in.

5. You won’t miss much not watching the Washington Redskins!! You already know the outcome!

6. Easy to vote – drop ballot in the mail or bring it to the mee ng!

7. This is your community!!!

See you all soon!! Lynne Collman (Elec on Commi ee)

The following members of the Montpelier Community Association have been nominated for elec on to the MCA Board of Trustees. Please read the following brief biographies and cast your vote at the Annual Mee ng, Septem-ber 25 at 2 pm at the Montpelier Pool. Ron Paul Buehler 9000 Golden Pass 301 776-9886 As a board member, I will continue to improve and maintain the Montpelier community common grounds. I have been a Montpelier resident for 24 years and real-ly enjoy the community and residents. I have been on the board since 2009, served as Pool Committee Chair-person and Facilities Chairperson and was league repre-sentative for the Marlins Swim Team. Bob Derrick 12608 Cedarbrook Lane 301 776-5008 I grew up in Montpelier, attended the neighborhood schools, graduated from Virginia Tech and spent 30 years in the United States Army. After leading organi-zations from 45 to 1800 people in the Corps of Engi-neers and managing budgets over a million dollars, I feel I have the experience to be a member of the Board of Trustees. I have served in many professional organi-zations and was involved in the “Community Watch” program in my neighborhood in North Carolina. I have served on the MCA Board for the past 7 years and have been actively involved in the pool, socials, common grounds, swim team, and the proper use of the capital reserve funds. I believe in truth, transparency, good stewardship of our resources, and the friendly inclusion of all community members’ ideas. These qualities are vital to the sound governance of our neigh-borhood. The common grounds are a valuable asset to each homeowner, in addition to providing wholesome family recreation, and must be maintained to the high-est standards. I will work to keep the lines of commu-nication open to protect the lifestyle of our unique neighborhood. I currently live in the same house that my parents bought in 1967. Patricia Douville 8904 Eastbourne Lane 301-490-7614 I am married to John and have three boys – Patrick 29, Sean 27 and Colin 25. My family and I have lived in Montpelier since 1996, however I grew up here from 1967-1984. I currently am employed at St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel where I've taught math

for 22 years. I was elected to the MCA Board of Trus-tees the last seven years and I also served on the Board several years ago. I served on the Board of Directors for the Settler's Landing Homeowner's Association for several years. I was an active volunteer on the Montpel-ier Swim Team from 1997-2006. Now I wish to con-tribute my time to our neighborhood in a different ca-pacity. I am interested in pool operations and social events. Lillian Fazio 8716 Crystal Rock Lane 301 776-3267 My name is Lillian R. Fazio. I am an original home-owner. I have been your Treasurer for the past seven years. I was also Treasurer from 1985 to 1996. At this point, I feel very comfortable in handling the finances of the community. I believe Montpelier is a wonderful place to live. I would like to keep it that way by taking care of prob-lems as they arise. I believe in using our Reserve Funds for the upkeep and beautification of the common grounds. However, I also feel we must be prudent in the amount of Reserve we spend so we do not deplete our-selves in the event an emergency arises. I am very much in favor of using legal assistance in order to col-lect past due assessments. I am also a tennis player and will actively work to keep the courts attractive. Brad Gimbert 12606 Cedarbrook Lane 301 343-0386 I have lived in Montpelier for 46 years and I have been on the MCA Board of Trustees for five years. I am currently co-chair of the Facilities Committee. The specific MCA Board functions of most interest to me are Facilities/Grounds Maintenance, Pool Operations and Security. Tim Jacobs 8711 Crestmont Lane 916 712-1731 My family has enjoyed living in Montpelier for nine years. I believe the homeowner is the important person

and we must do what needs to be done to allow the homeowner to create their home as they see fit. The HOA is not to stop the homeowner, but to help home-owners do projects that are safe and pleasing to every-one. I will make sure that money spent from our HOA funds is necessary and well-planned. I would like to see the pool area improved for small children by adding more modern, water park-like equipment. As a member of the board, I provide email communication between all the homes, and train and find moderators to keep com-munication flowing. I am also interested in Security. Jack Keating 9307 Montpelier Drive 301 325-0497 I have lived in Montpelier for 14 years. I serve as MCA Vice-President (2009-2016) and I am also a member of the ACC Committee (2008-2016). I would like the op-portunity to serve a another term on the Board of Trus-tees. Richard Mason 8900 Orwood Lane 301 346-6250 As an MCA Trustee I am honored to be Chairman of the MCA Security Committee for the past five years and Chairman of the Traffic Committee the past three years. My wife, Emily, and I have lived in Montpelier for 41 years. We raised two boys here, and thoroughly enjoy living in the Montpelier Community. I have a keen interest in keeping our community safe, so have served on the Security Committee for over ten years. I have developed a good working relationship with the PG County Community Police officers and graduated from the Prince George’s County Citizens Police Acad-emy. I am also an active member of the Prince George’s County Citizens Advisory Council. My goals are to prevent crime and keep our community safe. As Traffic Chairman, I will make sure our traffic and roads are safe and maintained properly. I have developed excellent working relationships with the PG County elected officials and the PG County Dept. of Public Works and Transportation Managers. I would like the opportunity to serve another term on the MCA Board of Trustees. In the past, I have been active with the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, and presently volunteer at our church. Jean Sorrentino 12227 Valerie Lane 301 776-3650 I have lived in Montpelier for 47 years and have en-joyed being a Trustee for the past three years. My ca-reer was in early childhood educa on-teaching and direc ng nursery school, teaching kindergarten for the

Prince George’s County Public Schools, and finally work-ing for the Maryland State Department of Educa on as an Accreditation Specialist evaluating private nursery schools and kindergartens for approval by the State. I have enjoyed the social gatherings on the common grounds and pool and have provided my assistance whenever it was needed! Specific board functions that interest me are Communications and Social Activities.

Treasurer’s Report: Lillian Fazio

Trustee Fazio prepared the monthly state-ments, which were distributed. There are s ll 27 unpaid assessments ($8,505). Uncollected assessments amount to $21,019. This is long term and current delin-quents. Two judgements have been obtained and it was suggested by our A orney that we do employee searches in order to garnish their wages. Trustee Fazio moved to allow our a orney to do an employee search on the homeowner owing $2,565. Trustee Douville seconded the mo on and it passed unani-mously. It appears the overcharge with Republic Ser-vice has been resolved. Trustee Fazio spoke with Michelle Mealing and she will have the rental charge removed.

ACC Commi ee: Jack Kea ng, Chairperson

Trustee Kea ng reported on the June ACCC mee ng and distributed a dra of the minutes. The ACC commi ee is reques ng the vote of the board to decide if a ma er regarding a structure that is being disputed be dropped and no longer pursue any type of ac on. Trus-tee Kea ng made a mo on to drop any ac on against this resident, Trustee Douville second-ed the mo on and the mo on passed unani-mously. Tennis Report: Lillian Fazio Many of the rocks placed around the tennis courts are now moved away from the courts and into the grass. Trustee Buehler said he would make arrangements to have them moved back to where they belong. Mold removal on the courts remains a prob-lem. Hopefully using water fountain as water source and electric box near courts it can be resolved. There is s ll some poison ivy and weeds around the tennis courts. Trustee Fazio will check with Mrs. Derrick upon her return to see if she has sugges ons on a possible solu-

on. Maybe this is covered by Pres ge or maybe the boys who owe the community some service hours could help.

MONTPELIER TODAY 22 SEPT/OCT 2016

2016 Montpelier Marlins –

Celebrating 49 years of Dominance in the Prince-Mont Swim League!

Way before the swimmers hit the pool, Season 49 started off on a good note by hos ng our annual Marlin Car Wash. Swimmers and their families came out to help make those “dirty” cars, inside & out, look brand new. While patrons’ waited they sat back and enjoyed delicious bake goods, coffee and catching up with neighbors.

Following Memorial weekend – the fun and hard work started. The Marlins welcomed back coaches Brian Abdo ( 6th season) and Naomi Mills( 3rd season) as well as welcoming 2 new coaches to the team – Bernade e Saarinen and Dylan Buehler – both former Marlins. Each coach brought their own unique swim experiences and coaching techniques to the team. During the off season, several of our retuning swimmers par cipated in winter swim team programs and in addi on competed for their High School Swim Teams. Based on the out-comes, you can tell for many, the winter swim training paid off. I just beam when I see the smiles on the swim-mers when they achieve their goal that their hard work has paid off; or the swimmers who take the chance and put a new technique they learn into play. Some mes it not the place they finish but the smile and confidence they have coming out of the pool following their event. This is what summer swim is all about!! This year, the Marlins, competed in Division D alongside several of our neighboring teams (West Laurel, Russe and Northridge) for some good old fashion friendly compe on.

Laurel Invita onals – July 10th over 200 swimmers from 5 Laurel Teams qualified to compete in the 35th Annual LaureI Invita onals. Marlins captured the Gold while capturing 2 High Point Awards:

Age 15-18 Girls Suzannah Mills

Age 9-10 Boys Dillion Middlebusher

Following a successful Laurel Invita onals, it was me for some fun and relaxa on at the Abdo’s great backyard. Pizza, refreshments and games were on the schedule for the evening. Fun by all!! Thanks to all the parents for helping to make the Laurel Invita onals the “Rio” of the season. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Throughout the season, the Marlin family got to have fun outside the pool as well. In addi on to the Pancake Breakfast with all the trimmings, the Marlins spent a June evening with the Bowie Baysoxs. Over fi y Marlins enjoyed a great game of baseball followed by running the bases and then some awesome fireworks. If that wasn’t enough for one night – it was Star Wars Night at the Baysoxs – sabers and all! Unfortunately Yoda was not available I can’t have everything). July was me to pack up the van and head to Sandy Point Beach. Several families met early one morning at the Pool and with vans packed up with tents, umbrellas, lunches and suntan lo on, headed south for some fun in the sun. Brian’s pickup truck was filled with beach games for all ages and coolers with water and lemonade. For several hours it was fun for all, not even the jelly fishes could ruin our spirit.

Friendly, Compe ve and Successful were the Marlins: # swimmers – 85 # new swimmers – 17 # Adopted family – 11 Summary: Record 4-1 Hosted: 2 Home Meets plus Laurel Invita onals(LI)

MONTPELIER TODAY 24 SEPT/OCT 2016

Hi Neighbors, We have really had a season of extremes. Twenty seven days of rain in May and weeks of temperatures close to 100 degrees. The one factor that has supported the plant life to survive has been those days and nights of hard rain. All of these extremes cause tremendous stress on the plant life with many specimens succumbing. When trees are under tree from extremes in temperature they send out pheromones [scent] which is picked up by borers that are in the ground. The borers then a ack the weakened tree trunks, drilling holes into the bark and destroying the integument or myelin. This lack of nutrients to the plant results in its death. Another strayer is too much rain soaking the ground along with poor drainage from hard packed soil causing the roots to suffocate and die. This is referred to as “ root rot “. Older specimens of certain trees are more at risk. This year I have lost two beau ful pink dogwoods that were twenty years old. It is heart breaking. Now there is the challenge to redesign the landscape that were dependent on these trees as anchor plants. But don’t get discouraged. The challenge is what gardening is all about.

One of our neighbors, Sherry Stafiej of 8909 Royal Ridge met the challenge of having her home built on a steep hillside. She told me her husband Richard would put on golf shoes with cleats to cut the front hill. A er several years Sherry decided to have a professional landscaper come in. He used several anchor plants, namely Japanese Maple tree, Blue Spruce and weeping evergreen. Sherry was quite sa sfied for many years but with some specimens dying and others ragged out she decided that the hill needed a face li ! She consulted many landscapers, some wan ng to add several stone walls reminding her of medieval castles, others wan ng to remove all the plants and start over. Sherry was quite fond of several shrubs and did not want to wait for new specimens to come to full growth. Her plan was to keep most of her plants and fill in with complimen-tary specimens. One example is the deep high hill that has groups of green liriope. Sherry has fer lized them and added variegated cream colored liriope to the mix. She added new day lilies which she sprays with Bobbex so that the deer do not eat them. The lilies contribute a burst of color among the greenery. Sherry is not finished yet and has renewed ener-gy to con nue the project. Drive by 8909 Royal Ridge, maybe you too will be inspired. Spruce ps dying: I have a small Blue Spruce in the garden. This Spring I found that many of the ps of the branches were dead. I guessed that since the rest of the bush was healthy, it was probably an insect ea ng away. I cut the dead ps off and sprayed the spruce. This solved the problem.

Roses come back: Now that the Fall will bring in cooler weather, roses will put on a big show with just a li le help from us. Give them a boost by feeding them with rose food and spray with a fungicide. Rake up and remove all yellow leaves so spores can’t over winter. Discard in trash not in the mulch pile. Dependability: When I reflect how many perennials I have planted and their ability to come back every year, the Red Hot Poker or Kniophofia is the five star winner. Their scrappy grass like foliage adds texture as well to the garden. In addi on hummingbirds bees and bu erflies love the seeds that form a er the flower is spent. Arbors add interest: Varying the height of plants adds interest to the garden. Place an arbor on either side entrance to your garden or cover a path with an arbor. This is an invita on to “enter” the space. Trumpet vine with its yellow or melon flowers grow up the trellis and also a ract hummingbirds.

Bulb plan ng………..the art of Fall ritual: I would be remiss if I failed to men on some of the guide lines of plan ng bulbs. The larger the bulb the be er but more important, the bulbs should be heavy with no sign of white fungus near the roots. The best bargain is daffodils. They mul ply every year. If you just need to have bright color, tulips are the answer. This Fall plant them in pots and cover with some form of chicken wire. In that way the squirrels can’t dig them up. Add one tablespoon of bone meal which strengthens the stems against the strong winds of Spring. When they are coming to flower in Spring, spray them with deer repellent, pref-erably with Bobbex. Well that’s it for now. I am off to the nursery to look for bargains. Happy Gardening !!!!!!!!!!
