Romulus Public Library Part-time Library Assistant (20 hours/week)
TWO POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Job duties:
Assist patrons of all ages at the Circulation Desk on the phone and in person.
Assist patrons with computer questions.
Handle cash transactions for overdue fines, copying and other fees.
Provide reference assistance and readers advisory.
Process incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan items.
Assist with projects.
Other duties as assigned. Job requirements:
Minimum of two years of college coursework required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Minimum of one year of library experience, preferably in a public services position.
Computer literacy including use of databases, MS Word and Excel required; experience with SIRSI Workflows or other library computer software preferred.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to provide superior customer service to library users of all ages.
Ability to operate standard office equipment such as a copy machine.
Ability to work cooperatively with library staff in a team environment.
Ability to produce neat, accurate and timely work within an established timeframe.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.

General Summary Under the general direction of the Library Director or designee, performs a variety of library tasks requiring a working knowledge of library procedures. Duties may include planning and conducting age appropriate library programs, assisting patrons with reference and reader’s advisory questions, assisting patrons with the use of computers, printers, software, and downloadable digital resources, and assisting with the selection and maintenance of the library collection.
Essential Job Functions An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Assists patrons in locating materials and information, utilizing various technologies and a working
knowledge of the library system. 2. Provides reference and information service assistance to patrons using both printed and electronic
resources. 3. Performs technical support duties, including collection development and acquisition control under the
supervision of the Library Director or designee. 4. Compiles data and completes a variety of reports using both manual and computerized spreadsheets
and databases. Researches and makes recommendations to the Library Director or designee on ways to gather data, improve existing reports or initiate new reports.
5. Maintains assigned Library web pages. 6. Plans and prepares library programs and displays.
7. Demonstrates, teaches, and troubleshoots the use of public access office equipment including
computers and related software as needed. 8. May lead group tours through the library, explaining library services and procedures. 9. May be assigned supervisory responsibilities for work activities of other service area personnel during
a special project. 10. May be assigned to provide support in other service areas as necessary. 11. Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. 1. Must possess a Master of Library Science or equivalent from a school of library science accredited by
the American Library Association.

Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an environmentally controlled setting. Walking surfaces are well lit, tiled and/or carpeted. This is low physically demanding position, requiring a limited range of motion. The use of both fine and gross muscles of the body is essential. Work is performed in the optimal working envelope of neck to navel and within arms reach. The use of a ladder to reach shelving outside of the work envelope is common. The employee is required to reach from approximately floor level to six feet. The side rotation of objects is approximately twenty-four inches (shelving of books). The employee is regularly required to lift objects of ± 5 pounds and occasionally lifts objects of 10 pounds. The employee must be able to manually write and work with a computer keyboard. The ability to use a phone system is essential to this position. Vision or assisted vision is required. Limited hearing is acceptable. Verbal communication is essential.
Individuals with physical impairments can be accommodated to perform most essential task of these positions. The use of mobility assistant devices such as wheelchairs, walkers etc, is not a hindrance to this position.

Troy Public Library Youth Services Intern
$12.00/hr
General: The Troy Public Library is committed to providing an enriching and professional environment and is
seeking a student who is currently enrolled in a Library Science Master’s Degree program at an
accredited college or university for a paid, part-time internship.
This position will allow the student to gain practical library knowledge and skills, while working
alongside professional librarians and staff. The student will provide reference service/bibliographic
instruction to patrons of all ages, with a target population of pre-school age to 18 years of age. The
student will complete projects in areas relevant to his or her interests, with possibilities ranging from
summer reading, literacy and educational programs to school and community outreach programs.
This position has a term length of up to 2 years, working 20 hours per week (including some night
and weekend hours).
Applicants should be enthusiastic about public service, exhibit excellent written and verbal
communication skills and have a strong interest in youth development and working knowledge of
juvenile and young-adult materials.
Bachelor’s Degree
Completion of at least 12 credit hours in a Library Science Master's program
Interest and familiarity with children’s literature and youth programs
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work successfully with patrons of all ages, specifically children

Steering Committee Chair: Toni LaPorte had each person present
introduce themselves. LaPorte then introduced the new members of the
Steering Committee for FY 2017: Patty Brady (Romulus) Chair, Shelia
Collins (Westland) Class VI, Doreen Hannon (Salem-South Lyon) Class IV,
and Rachel Lee (Flat Rock) Class I, II and III. LaPorte then reported the
committee returned the call for support to utilize Text Messaging service
in support of early literacy efforts, to the requestor, Lisa Hoenig of
Ypsilanti to explore outlets discovered by TLN staff. A new approach to
customer service workshops, featuring techniques for serving mentally
challenged patrons, proposed by Zaley Nelson (Northfield Township),
was approved and given to TLN for development. The effort will feature
expert input from staff of the National Alliance for mental Illness.
TLN Director Report: Jim Pletz reported recent negotiations with two
organizations representing TLN staff had concluded in a Temporary
Agreement for FY2017 to FY 2019, pending member and TLN Board
review and approval. Pletz reported planning consultants have been
contacted to update the TLN Strategic Plan, which covered 2010 to 2013.
Pending proposals, TLN may wait a year until the process of bidding out
a new Integrated Library System is completed.
With no further business with a motion from Hage, supported by Ewick,
the meeting was adjourned at 11:30 AM and turned over to the guest
speaker, Lee Meadows.

Assist users of all ages according to our established customer services standards.

24 Hours Per week Position is responsible for the performance of routine tasks involved in the sorting of library materials, supplies and equipment. Positions are part-time. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Operates under the general supervision of the Distribution Supervisor, but most of the time is remote from any direct supervision. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only) Responsible for sorting library materials, placing material into the proper bin, loading bins at or below chest/shoulder level. Pushing full bins down the conveyor line, lifting bins onto cart, stacking bins four high, preparing stacked bins for loading on to the delivery vehicles. Also, unloads bins full of materials from delivery vehicle. Other duties as assigned. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
1. Reliability and mature judgment are essential. 2. Ability to communicate effectively, and to relate well with other staff members. 3. Ability to carry out verbal and written instruction. 4. Ability to lift to chest level and carry delivery tubs weighing up to 65 pounds. 5. Ability to work cooperatively with other sorting staff to unload returning delivery trucks. 6. Ability to sort by numeric and alpha codes.
