october 2016 Newsletter TIME FOR A NEWER MODEL! It’s served its purpose well since being introduced in early 2015, but after finding its way into nearly 7,000 homes, cars and showboxes, it’s time for the current Iowa Hereford Breeders Association directory to retire and make way for a “new, improved” version. The 2017-18 IHBA directory will again be published in 4-color by the American Hereford Association’s Creative Services, with a print run of approximately 7,000 copies. Approximately 5,500 of those will be direct-mailed to cow-calf producers in Iowa, with an additional 150 sent to county and state Extension staff and primary sale barn operators and another 250 going to Iowa Hereford adult and junior members. It will also be available at the Iowa Cow-Calf Conference and the Iowa Beef Expo. This publication will be a tremendous promotional tool for the Hereford breed and for all IHBA members, regardless of the size of your herd. Here’s how we need you to participate: Advertising “Prime pages” (outside back cover, inside front & back covers, opposite the inside covers, opposite the index and the center page spread) will be sold via a “claim process” on Oct. 19-20. Written claim forms are available from the editors and must be received by Oct. 17 . For more information on this process and minimum bids, contact Mike Simpson at 515-833-2991 (home), 515-343-7644 (cell) or e-mail him at [email protected]. A reservation form with pricing for regular advertising can be found in this newsletter. When you consider that you will reach 7,000 people over a 2-year period, the cost works out to about a nickel per contact. Don’t worry if you’re “artistically challenged” – all you need to do is provide a rough sketch along with information and pictures and Creative Services will create the ad for you free of charge. Final deadline for all ads (copy and payment) is Nov. 18 . Membership Annual dues are $50 per calendar year; everyone who pays 2017 dues by Nov. 30 will receive a free basic listing in the directory. Expanded listing information is available for an additional $30 fee ($80 total). A membership/listing form is also included in this newsletter. If you’re planning to join or renew your membership, why not do is now so you’ll be in the directory? We currently have around 150 membe rs – let’s have them all listed to show Iowa cattlemen the strength of the Hereford breed! Cover Photos If you have a good vertical photo that you’d like considered for the cover, please submit it electronically to [email protected]by Nov. 30. If your picture is chosen, you’ll be credited as photographer on the index page. Final selection of the cover will be made by Creative Services staff. PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that all deadlines be complied with in order to meet the production schedule and have the books ready for distribution in January.

State Fair Awards
Each year, the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association presents awards to the exhibitors of the champion
Hereford heifer and steer in the 4-H show and the
champion Hereford breeding heifer in the FFA show at the Iowa State Fair. This year, the youth received
handmade wooden boot jacks that were crafted by IHBA member Randy Offenburger of Lacona.
Deppe Steer Wins Jackpot
Nick Deppe of Maquoketa earned an additional premium of $368.50 on his champion
Hereford 4-H steer at the Iowa State Fair, as part of
an incentive program sponsored by the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association since 2004. A total of
$750 jackpot is available, with each exhibitor receiving $20 premium per entry. The remaining
jackpot is split, 2/3 – 1/3 between the champion and
reserve, if the animals are Iowa-bred, registered and a copy of the registration paper is provided to the
IHBA within 30 days. Nick’s steer, which earlier this summer won the Junior National Hereford Expo, was
bred by his brother Austin.
Three Awarded Virgil Peters Scholarships
Hall of Fame breeder Virgil Peters loved Herefords from the time he began showing them at the fair as a
boy. His father and grandfather both had registered Herefords and Virgil followed in their footsteps. He was very
active in the state association and was president of the Iowa Hereford Association when the horned and polled organizations merged.
When he passed away in December, his widow, Sharon, and family wished to honor his request that his
memorial money be given as a scholarship to an Iowa junior Hereford breeder. In hopes of finding someone
who loves Herefords as much as Virg did, they asked applicants to write a one-page essay explaining the influence of the breed in their lives and sharing memories and the impact those experiences will make on their
future. When seven well-qualified juniors submitted applications, the Peters family generously decided to award three $500 scholarships in Virgil’s memory. Sharon Peters (second from right) and her daughter, Julie Vislisel (far
right) were on hand during the State Fair Hereford show to announce the winners: (from left) Claire Solsma, Sanborn; Ella Meyer, Keswick; and Abby Anderlik, Dayton.
Jackson Award to Anderlik
Abby Anderlik of Dayton is this year’s recipient of
the Buell and Helen Jackson Memorial Award. Currently president of the Iowa Junior Hereford
Association, she is also a previous Iowa Hereford
Queen. LeRoy Jackson (right) made the presentation on behalf of the Jackson family.
Solsma Wins Harms Scholarship
Claire Solsma (right), Sanborn, was awarded the
Richard F. Harms Memorial Scholarship by IHBA
President Bill Goehring during the Iowa State Fair. She’s a freshman at Iowa State University majoring
in ag communications and political science.
Governor’s Steer Show
U.S. Senator Joni Ernst returned to the show ring for
the third year at the halter of a steer sponsored by the IHBA in the Governor’s Charity Steer Show at
the State Fair. With her is T.R. Putz, Otley, who
raised Benny and had a successful show campaign with him earlier this summer. Thanks to all the
breeders who helped support Benny’s $5,000 sale price at the auction.

In 2007, they were named national advisors of the year.
Many Thanks…
I want to sincerely thank you for sponsoring my reserve champion Hereford heifer award from the
FFA show at the Iowa State Fair! I have very much enjoyed exhibiting Hereford cattle for the first time
this year at Iowa State Fair and the JNHE and look
forward to continuing to do so. Thanks again for your sponsorship of this award and of Hereford
youth. Katy Ruth, Iowa City
I am honored to have been chosen as a recipient of
the Virgil Peters and Harms family scholarships. I am adjusting and enjoying life at Iowa State
University, studying agricultural communications. I
look forward to using my experiences showing my wonderful Hereford cattle to be an advocate for
agriculture. C;laire Solsma, Sanborn

Tour Draws Good Crowd
On Labor Day Sunday, Sept. 4, Hereford enthusiasts from Iowa, Illinois and Indiana enjoyed a day of
food, fellowship and good cattle in eastern Iowa as they gathered for the annual Iowa Hereford Tour.
Approximately 50-75 people were at each stop, with those who stayed for the annual meeting in Dubuque enjoying a Certified Hereford Beef® steak dinner.
Deppe Brothers, Maquoketa, had made some major
additions to their property and facilities since the they hosted the tour in 2008. Visitors enjoyed
viewing and judging cattle in spacious adjoining pens and sheds.
Joelle Deppe (left) and crew put together a
sumptuous brunch for tour-goers and served it in the family’s new office/shop building.
At Petersen Herefords, DeWitt, guests saw many-
times champion DelHawk Winsley 1412 ET (foreground) resting with friends following her
successful show campaign.
Both Deppes and Petersens offered guests a chance
to test their judging skills. One class at Petersens’ was this group of heifers.
Before cooking for the group, Cliff Tappa (above), owner of Tappa’s Steak House in Davenport, shared
his philosophy on what makes a good steak and why he uses CHB exclusively.
Mike Hora (center) and his wife Cindy (right),
owners of Hora’s Prime Beef, told the crowd how they use Hereford genetics to help produce high-
quality beef for the consumer trade. They’re pictured chatting with Doug Lenth (left) following
