2) Increased focus on God and prayer, which leads to stronger relationship w/Christ

3) New friendships with other parishioners

4) Finding answers to spiritual questions

RCIA Is Now Journey

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) will now be known as “Journey” to better reflect the process of

learning to practice the Catholic faith. Journey is for people who are not Christian or were baptized but not

raised in the faith.

The journey of conversion is about discerning and finding Christ along the way. Journey is the process of

introducing people to Jesus Christ and helping them develop a relationship with Him while exploring what

that ultimately means for their lives.

In the first phase of Journey, people explore who God is and are introduced to the biblical stories. They look

back to see where God has been in their personal lives and reflect on God in their lives now.

The second phase of Journey involves teaching about sacraments, the church, scripture, and the wealth of

church teaching. This can take a full year. It’s not intended to be a classroom experience or program, but a

less structured process where people learn by experiencing and observing and then talking about it with

others. People walk alongside others who are sharing what they are going through on their journey.

The third phase takes place during the six weeks of Lent. This period is a time of spiritual preparation for

receiving the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil and the weekly gatherings feel much more like a

retreat.

The fourth phase begins when people receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and communion at the

Easter Vigil for the first time. They then gather periodically throughout the next year reflecting on the

mysteries they have entered into in the Catholic faith.

If you or someone you know is interested in finding out more about the Catholic faith or the process of

Journey, please contact Janet Payton at [email protected].

On a basic level, everyone just wants to be

happy. Every day, we make choices based on

what makes us happy. This January, discover

what it means to be truly, completely happy.

Thank You for Your Generosity During the Holidays

The Ministry of Assistance would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped provide for the

needy of our parish and Medina County.

This year, we were able to serve 40 families for Thanksgiving with food, including turkeys and all the “fixings”

for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. In addition, your generosity allowed us to provide turkeys, food and finan-

cial help for St. Augustine’s Hunger Center. An honorable mention goes to the students who worked so hard

decorating the boxes that held the food going to St. Augustine’s.

At Christmas, with the Give-A-Gift program, we served those same 40 families with gifts and food baskets, in-

cluding a Christmas ham. Thanks to all the parishioners for the beautifully wrapped gifts and the PSR families

for the toys given to those children. Also, thanks to the parishioners and businesses who adopted an entire fami-

ly for Christmas.

In addition, we were able to send gifts and toys to the Battered Women’s Shelter in Medina, gifts and toys to our

sister parish, La Sagrada Familia, to St. Augustine’s, Community Services and to Birth Care of Medina.

The monetary donations received in the Holy Martyrs Red Stocking collection will enable us to keep the food

pantry stocked and meet basic cash needs for those who ask for help. Every penny donated goes to assist those

in need, both in our parish and in Medina County.

Once again, sincere thanks to all who participated this year. You helped many families enjoy their Thanksgiving

and Christmas holidays.

LET'S GO TO THE HOLY LAND!

nearly ready for registration!

The pilgrimage will be from June 10-19, 2018.

It will include 8 full days of visiting all of the

major sites of Jesus' life around Galilee

and Jerusalem.

The full itinerary and all trip details will be com-

ing very soon. Stay tuned!

New Outreach Starts Soon

A new outreach by the women of Holy Martyrs

involves working with our sister parish, La Sagrada

Familia, to provide a meal once a month during a

support meeting for women who are survivors of

domestic violence.

You can help by providing part of a light meal,

interacting with the women or babysitting during

their meeting. (Confirmation candidates seeking

service hours could help with babysitting, too.)

We expect to begin this outreach in mid-January and

continue on a monthly basis.

Please contact Diane Bruce at

[email protected] if you would like to receive a

signup email for providing part of a meal regularly or

from time to time. Food would need to be dropped

off at Holy Martyrs the Sunday before each meeting.

This is part of our expanding parish outreach to link

our parishioners to those in need.

Service Project Competition

Have you sent in your photos for the “Father, Help Me to Serve” competition?

A prize will be awarded to the class that has the highest percentage of students who completed a

service project by Jan. 8/9. We’ll determine the winning class this week and award prizes Jan. 22/23.

A prize will be awarded to a group of three families or more who do a service project together. Take a

group photo (by Feb. 14) of the three families while they are doing the service project. Then, submit the

photo for the contest.

A prize will be awarded to the family that has done the most original service project by March 1.

For ideas, see a list of 100 service project ideas on our website.

Don’t forget to bring in a picture of your family working on a service project.

Protecting Our Young People

Every January, our PSR students in grades 1-6

learn skills that help them protect themselves

from child molesters. Children are taught how to

recognize boundary violations that precede

abuse, remove themselves from uncomfortable

situations and tell a trusted adult when someone

has crossed a boundary.

Praesidium developed a curriculum with age-

appropriate lessons for each grade level. For

example, second graders will learn about

listening to their “gut” or intuition when it tells

them something’s not right. Third graders will

learn about different types of secrets and how to

recognize a “bad” secret. They’ll also learn what

to say to a trusted adult when someone has asked

them to keep a secret that makes them feel

unsafe. An important part of what fifth graders

learn relates to limiting private information

shared online.

The Diocese of Cleveland requires that these

skills be taught every year to children in grades

1-8. SPIRIT students (grades 7 and 8) received

this training in November of 2017.
