2009 Leaders’ Appreciation Night

Outstanding leaders from 4-H clubs across Sutter and Yuba counties were recognized for their efforts and achievements on the evening of January 8 at the 4-H Office. The 2009 Leaders’ Appreciation Night brought together 4-H volunteers who due to their support and dedication, truly are the core of the Sutter-Yuba Counties 4-H Youth Development Pro-gram.

Each honoree received a framed photo collage of an image created by the state 4-H office that includes many photos of local youth and volunteers. Recently retired UC Cooperative Extension Office Manager and 4-H Secretary, Pat Bagley was the special

honoree for the evening. Pat was thanked and honored for her many years of service to 4-H.

SAFE CARE AND HANDLING OF CHICKENS

Approach your chicken in a calm and deliberate man-ner. Always protect your chicken(s) from potential preda-tors. Make sure your chicken is able to easily reach fresh feed and water at all times. To remove a chicken from a pen, cage, or coop, turn the bird so it exits the enclosure while facing the enclosure door. Be aware that chicken pens, cage, and coops often have sharp edges and enclosure doors can act as pinch points. If scratched or seriously pecked by a chicken, notify your group leader, parent, or guardian. To avoid slipping or falling, wear shoes with slip resis-tant soles and step carefully when feeding and watering your chicken(s) or while cleaning a chicken coop. During hot weather, assure your chicken has access to shade. During cold weather assure your chicken has ac-cess to shelter. When showing your chicken at a poultry event, wear appropriate clothing. Be alert for vehicular traffic and follow safe pedestrian rules when attending poultry events. Always wash your hands with soap and water after handling a chicken or any other animal.

Barry 4-H Club received 2nd place for “Creative Light” in the Marysville Christmas Parade. Beale 4-H planted 140 red tulip bulbs in front of their Youth

Center. This partnership with Red Ribbon Week, became an essential part of working to-gether as a team to bring aware-ness to the community regarding this important issue. When spring arrives, and the beautiful red tulips show their colors, it will serve as a reminder of what was learned through this service-learning project.

Dententer 4-H Club celebrated its 40th anniversary with a potluck. Past members and leaders of the club came to join the celebration. Dententer 4-H also made Christmas orna-ments and decorated a tree that was donated to a local fam-ily.—Zach Willert Hallwood 4-H Club will be holding their first annual Soup and Salad Dinner on Feb 13 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hallwood Church of the Nazarene, 2825 Hwy 20, Hallwood. They are offering all you can eat clam chowder, veggie mine-strone soup, chili and white bean chicken soup, salad, bread and dessert. $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children under 10. Tickets are available from any Hallwood Club member or call Rhonda at 749-8872 or Mary at 743-2490. Hi 4-H will hold their 5th Annual Crab Feed on Feb 15 at Whitaker Hall, 44 Second Street, Yuba City, starting at 5 p.m. They will be offering all you can eat crab or a half of a rotisserie chicken, clam chowder, salad, rolls, dessert, and iced tea and water. Tickets are $30.00 in advance and $35.00 at the door. There will be a silent auction. If any 4-H adults have a business and would like to make a donation, call Kayla Taylor at (530) 741-1375. Tickets are available from any Hi 4-H member or Leader or call Haleigh Fuentes at (916)655-3599 or Kayla Taylor. Pleasant Grove 4-H Club had their Christmas party cele-brating with hot chocolate, nachos, and pizza. In the spirit of giving they wrapped gifts to give to families in the commu-nity, decorated cookies and made craft projects. There was fun to be had by all.—Danielle Darrach Plumas 4-H Club participated in the California Highway Patrol’s C.H.P’s 4-Kids toy drive this year and donated $497 worth of new toys which were distributed to children, ages 2-18, within our Bi-County area. Marlene and Riley High were presented Leaders Awards during the Bi-County Leader Ap-preciation ice cream social. Marlene has been a leader for over 22 years and Riley has worked with 4-H’ers for 40 years. Longtime Plumas 4-H member Kayla Woods will be a dele-gate to Washington Focus. Plans were made for Bi-County Goat Day being hosted by Plumas 4-H. Rocky Hills 4-H Club had a harvest dinner in December during their monthly community club meeting where each family brought a dish. Desserts were a big hit, especially the “Mackenzie cake.” The horse group would like to say THANK YOU to leader Pam Pease for hosting the “sensory clinic” at her arena and for all the time she spent setting and cleaning up along with the Yuba County Women’s Sheriff Posse for

Who Makes A Presentation? All regular members, age 9 years and older and in 4th grade, are eligible to conduct a presentation. They can be made at the pro-ject, club and county level. Members who

have been in 4-H for 6 years or more are required to present at county level. Members are eligible to make only one county level presentation per year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although there is no uniform re-quirement in 4-H, the Bi-County Presentation Committee strongly recommends that 4-H “whites” and close-toed shoes be worn as a symbol of presenters’ pride and affilia-tion with the program. Members earning gold and blue awards at the county level are eligible to go on to Sectional Presentation Day competi-tion in March 2009. Gold award winners at Sectional Pres-entation Day can compete at State Presentation Day on May 30, 2009. What Is A Presentation? It is a planned demonstration or illustrated talk that ex-plains or illustrates by using examples. To demonstrate is to teach by showing - learning by doing! One or more per-sons can give presentations. Younger members gain confi-dence if they work in pairs. Where Are County Level Presentations Made? Presentation Days in February and March 2009 will be held at the 4-H Office at 142A Garden Highway in Yuba City. The May 2009 Presentation Day will be held at Spring Fair at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds. When Do Members Make Presentations? Members can make a county level presentation on Febru-ary 5, March 7, 2009, or at Spring Fair on May 9, 2009. Members are encouraged to prepare and conduct their presentations early so they are assured of being eligible to participate in the Yuba-Sutter Fair in August 2009. "Life happens" with unforeseen illness, school, and other extra-curricular activities that could prevent members from making a presentation at Spring Fair, the final opportu-nity to make a county level presentation. Why Make A Presentation? • It improves public speaking skills. • It increases members' ability to organize their thoughts,

plan a sequence of activities, and effectively respond to questions about what they have presented.

• It fulfills an eligibility requirement for county fair participation.

Emergency Preparation and Response Guidelines

Please take the time to review Clover Safe Notes # 13. Unforeseen accidents periodically occur whereby inju-ries are sustained. When an injury occurs, 4-H YDP volunteers and staff need to be prepared to provide an appropriate emergency response to the type and extent of a participant's injury.

Emergency Preparation

4-H YDP volunteers and staff should be prepared for po-tential participant injuries.

Primary Emergency Response

Evaluate the situation, stabilize the situation, call EMS, if needed.

Secondary Emergency Response

Once EMS has arrived, provide assistance as requested or needed, act as a resource, and/or report any injury to member’s parent/guardian.

Incident Reporting Procedures

Complete an Incident Report form for all injuries regard-less of seriousness.

1. Complete the claim form, (name, date of birth, phone number, address, date of accident, time of accident, place of accident, cause of accident, indicate injured body parts, witness to the accident, supervisor of the activity, nature of sickness, date sickness first com-menced.) Confirm information by signing bottom of form and have supervising 4-H adult volunteer wit-ness sign the form.

2. Include relevant materials with the Claim Form. A copy of the itemized bill from the medical services must be attached to the claim form.

3. Submit the Claim Form and itemized Bills to the UCCE 4-H office. The claim will be submitted to the Hartford Claims office. Payment from Hartford is usually sent to the claimant who is responsible for the payment of the bills and could take from 6-8 weeks once the claim has been submitted to Hartford.
