The demonstrations, illustrated talks, and prepared speeches that will be conducted on January 17, 2008 will kick off the 2008 series of Presentation Days of the Sutter/Yuba Counties 4-H Program.

Who Makes A Presentation? All regular members, age 9 years and older and in 4th grade, are eligible to conduct a presentation. They can be made at the project, club and county level. Members who have been in 4-H for 6 years or more are required to present at county level. Members are eligible to make only one county level presentation per year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although there is no uniform requirement in 4-H, the Bi-County Presentation Com-mittee strongly recommends that 4-H “whites” and close-toed shoes be worn as a symbol of presenters’ pride and affiliation with the program. Members earning gold and blue awards at the county level are eligible to go on to Sectional Presentation Day competition on March 29, 2008 that our local program is hosting. Gold award winners at Sectional Presentation Day can compete at State Presentation Day on May 24, 2008. What Is A Presentation? It is a planned demonstration or illustrated talk that explains or illustrates by using examples. To demonstrate is to teach by showing - learning by doing! One or more per-sons can give presentations. Younger members gain confi-dence if they work in pairs. Where Are County Level Presentations Made? Presentation Days in January, February and March 2008 will be held at the 4-H Office at 142A Garden Hwy. in Yuba City. The May 2008 Presentation Day will be held at Spring Fair at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds. When Do Members Make Presentations? Members will have opportunities to make a county level presentation. on January 17, February 13, and March 8, 2008, and at Spring Fair on May 10, 2008. Members are encouraged to prepare and conduct their presentations early so they are assured of being eligible to participate in the Yuba-Sutter Fair in August 2008. "Life happens" with unforeseen illness, school, and other extracurricular activi-ties that could prevent members from making a presenta-tion at Spring Fair, the final opportunity to make a county level presentation. Why Make A Presentation? • It improves public speaking skills. • It increases members' competencies in organizing their

thoughts, planning a sequence of activities, and effec-tively responding to questions about what they have pre-sented.

• It fulfills an eligibility requirement for county fair participation.

• It's FUN! For scoring rubrics and more information, go to: http://cesutter.ucdavis.edu/Youth%5Fdevelopment/ and click on Sutter-Yuba 4-H Forms.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

PRESENTATION DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!

4-H Families Affected by San Diego Wildfires: The UC 4-H Office in San Diego is accepting donations directly to help families who lost their homes that in-cluded animal food, supplies, equipment, etc. Will you please consider donating to the relief fund to help our greater 4-H family in need? Holiday Cards for Recovering Soldiers: All members, families and leaders are encouraged to send a holiday card to a soldier recovering from inju-ries sustained while serving on military duty. “H.O.P.P.” - The service project for 2007 Cal Focus delegates, Margery Magill and Hannah Baber is H.O.P.P. (Helping Orphaned Pets Prosper). They are collecting gently used or new blankets and towels that will be given to the four animal shelters and res-cue organizations in the bi-county area. Collection sites include: Tractor Supply, Sutter Orchard Sup-ply, Petco, PetSmart, Gaiser Pets, Marysville Veteri-nary Hospital, Country Veterinary Clinic (Live Oak), the Yuba-Sutter Fair Office, and the 4-H Office. Please call the 4-H Office with this information. Thank you. Hi 4-H: Is selling poinsettias (red = $13.00; pink & bur-gundy = $14.00). To order, contact any member. Rio Oso: Installed its new officers for the new Program Year. They are: President-Riley Wood, Vice President-Gregory Conant, Secretary-Jimmy Wells, Reporter-Tyler Wood, Sgt. At Arms-Jack Wells, and Flag Salute-Nick Guynes. Nick was welcomed as a new club member this month. The club meets the first Monday of every month. Please submit information about your club’s activities to Willa Davis by January 15th for the February newsletter. Thanks!

Sharon Moxon started as a parent volunteer when her children were 4-H members 20 years ago while liv-ing in Southern California where they had a dairy farm. In 2001, she moved to Northern California and enrolled in our local 4-H Program as a volunteer for Able Riders. Also, she currently serves as the Reporter for the Sutter County 4-H Council and is on the Bi-County Public Relations Committee. Sharon decided to serve as a 4-H volunteer because she loves being with kids and because it keeps her busy. She continues to serve as a volunteer with 4-H and other community organizations because she wants to hand down knowledge and provide stability to youth who may not otherwise have it in their lives. A sense of humor and patience are personal attrib-utes 4-H leaders need, Sharon says. She continues that they also need the ability to communicate with both adults and children in a way that ensures they understand what you’re trying to convey. The volunteers are one of our local 4-H Program’s greatest strengths, Sharon says. They’re dependable and can be counted on. They’re like-minded people with skills to teach agricultural functions to our youth in order to keep it a part of our community. Sharon’s advice to new 4-H volunteers is, “Be in con-tact with the 4-H staff and don’t afraid to ask other vol-unteers and parents to get what you need. Be organized and have fun.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Randi Stone started as the swine leader for the Rocky Hills 4-H Club in the 2006-2007 Program Year. She had been a 4-H member herself and when she found out that the club needed a swine leader, she de-cided to give them the help needed to get the project back on its feet. She continues as a 4-H volunteer be-cause she likes helping the members and passing on to them what she’s learned over the years about swine. Randi says that the needed characteristics that a 4-H leader can possess or develop are patience and dedication to the project and the kids. She says you really have to determine how much heart you want to put into it and how much you want your members to succeed. Randi reports that one of our local 4-H Program’s strongest features is the dedication that the leaders have for the program. They want everybody to work toward achieving their goals. She says that it’s like one big community. The recommendation that Randi wants to give to 4-H leaders just starting out is, “Keep your patience. And, keep your head up no matter how frustrated you get. It’s a learned thing that you get better at with each experience.”
