“My kids loved it,

so I loved it!”

Did you know…• Summer Quest has been offering camps to the

community for over 30 years!• Collegiate Summer Quest offers over 100 different

programs for pre-schoolers through adults.• For the past seven years, over 50% of

Summer Quest campers have been non-Collegiate students each year.

• Summer Quest has enrolled over 1,200 campers for each of the past eight years with record enrollment as high as almost 1,600 campers!

• Collegiate School has a newly completed Robins Campus with state-of-the-art athletic fields and facilities. Please take a look at the facilities pages in the back of the brochure to see what our campuses have to offer.

• Summer Quest offers Extended Care options most weeks so campers have the opportunity to spend the entire day at Collegiate.

• The majority of our camps are run by our very own Collegiate faculty and staff.

“Everyone is always so welcoming, which makes a huge difference to those of us who don’t attend Collegiate year round. I have found people to be very accommodating and genuine.”

Our World is a Global Village Camp

Melanie Marks, Ph.D., Diana ShoresRising 2nd – Rising 5th GradersJune 20 – June 24 • 9:00 am – 5:00 pm$425• Bring a lunch and filled water bottle from home each day.

This week-long, full-day, academic camp will engage students in hands-on activities with an international theme. Campers will learn that we live in a global village, where people just like us, engage in production and consumption to get the things they want and need. They may use different resources, enjoy different types of food and listen to diverse music. Nevertheless, from America to Zimbabwe, we rely on each other in one big global marketplace (imagine life without tulips from Holland, cocoa beans from Africa, and clothing and textiles from Asia).

Students will “travel” to Africa, Asia, Europe, and Mexico/Central America to learn about life in other countries – including cooking and tasting many foreign foods, completing art projects and exploring music, working with maps and globes, playing interactive games, and participating in a classroom economy where

“I feel like the teacher

a short amount of time…

he had a blast!”

“money” earned will be spent in the International Market. Children’s literature selections and age-appro-priate movies will be incorporated in order to bring foreign countries “to life” and all information will be delivered in a child-friendly, engaging manner. There will also be daily recreational activities so that campers may enjoy the summer weather.

Our World is a Global Village is a nationally recog-nized camp delivered by Longwood University College of Business & Economics. This camp will take place in Kemp Hall at River Road Presbyterian Church, which borders the Collegiate Lower School campus at the corner of North Mooreland and River Roads.

How to be a Great Sports Parent

Dana Blackmer, Ph.D.Wednesday, July 27 • 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm$30

Kids will only play a sport if they enjoy it. The strongest determinant of a child’s enjoyment of their sport is their parents – not their coach, not their team, not their sport – their parents! Every sports parent wants to support and motivate their child, but many times the best way to accomplish this isn’t clear. This class will provide practical tips on how to handle many of the challenges faced by today’s sports parents. Learn how to help your child reach his or her full potential without becoming a “pushy parent;” know if you are over- or under-involved in your child’s sport and effectively communicate with coaches. Help your child learn to cope with competitive stress, let go of mistakes, and boost their self-esteem through sports. Time will also be available for participants to share their experiences and ask specific questions that are most relevant to them.

Richmond sport psychologist Dana Blackmer, Ph.D. is the founder and owner of The Extra Gear. He is a member of the American Psychological Association's division of exercise and sport psychology and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. In addition to being an avid cyclist, Dana is a certified USA Cycling coach. He has coached teenage and adult amateur and professional athletes across the United States.

Mindful Living: An Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Alex PeaveyJuly 11 – July 14 • 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm(Monday – Thursday)$150

Do you have too much to do, but too little time? Do you find yourself multitasking throughout the day, rather than truly enjoying one activity at a time? Have you ever felt “stressed out”? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you are probably human, and you can benefit from the strategies taught in this class about living more mindfully.

Mindfulness is moment-by-moment intentional awareness of the present, cultivated in a non-judgmental and openhearted manner so that we are able to see these

things just exactly as they are. Approaching life more mindfully helps us to face and respond to the various challenges that arise each day, and this also enables us to be more fully present and productive when serving those around us in both our professional and personal lives.

In this class, participants will learn the same strate-gies that are taught to doctors, nurses, and medical students at over 200 hospitals and medical schools across the country. This same approach has been used by NBA Head Coach Phil Jackson en route to 11 championships with the Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers. It was also used by the most recent USA Women’s Ice Hockey team who brought home the Olympic gold. Whether you want to be more mindful as a parent, at your work place, with friends, while playing a sport, or just while you enjoy your next meal, this class is for you!

Alex Peavey is an Upper School Counselor at Colle-giate, where he also teaches a Stress Management class to the freshmen as a part of their health and wellness curric-ulum. Last year, Alex attended a professional training led by Jon Kabat-Zinn of the UMass Medical Center for Mindfulness, in order to be able to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, which is the foundation for this summer course. Alex has since led professional develop-ment training in mindfulness to the Collegiate faculty, to graduate students in the School of Education at VCU, to the public school counselors in surrounding counties, and to the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators.

For more information, contact Alex Peavey at [email protected].
