Class: MS Language Arts & Social StudiesHometown: Salt Lake City, Utah

Why I Teach: Right after September 11, my battalion was called to

defend the Pentagon. My soldiers spent months working 12 hour shifts,

seven days a week. Finally, we got a short break to go and practice

land navigation at a nearby base. As my soldiers were running around

the woods finding their points, I realized that I love teaching people

how to do things. That is how I came to become a teacher. Now, I get

to spend my days with a group of brilliant and engaged people and talk

about literature, history, and current events. What could be better?

Hobbies & Interests: Reading, soccer, running, tennis.

Favorite Music: folk and indie rock.

Favorite Movies: West Side Story, Dead Poets’ Society, Footloose,

Flirting with Disaster, Baraka, Gandhi.

Favorite Books: The Sneetches and Other Stories, The Butter Battle Book, The Witches, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, The Harry Potter Series (3 and 4 are the best), Hunger Games, Catcher in the Rye, Beloved, Pride and Prejudice, 1984 Plays: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Inherit the Wind, The Crucible.

Favorite Quotation: “I am a part of all that I have met”... “Though

much is taken, much abides; and though We are not now that strength

which in old days Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;

One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but

strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” Alfred Lord

Tennyson in “Ulysses”

About Me: I have twin daughters, Summer and Tessa, who will be

four in June. My husband and I met when we were both undergraduates

at Northwestern University. I used to be a paratrooper. I have jumped

out of a plane over 30 times.

Class: LS ArtHometown: Born in Chicago, grew up in the northwest suburbs

Why I Teach: I love teaching art because I LOVE art. My high school

art teacher gave me the confidence to pursue a career in art.

Why I like Quest: I love the energy and creativity that the students,

parents, teachers, and administrators bring to Quest each morning. It’s

contagious!

Hobbies & Interests: Baking cookies, cakes, and special desserts.

My favorite art material to work with is clay.

Favorite Music: I enjoy many different genres of music. When

I need to concentrate - Mozart; when I’m dancing in the kitchen, or

working out - 60’s, 70’s , or 80’s.

Favorite TV Shows: Recently, I watched American Idol because

a past student of mine was a contestant. I don’t watch TV very often

except for the news.

Favorite Movies: Gone With The Wind, Pride and Prejudice, Love

Actually, Out of Africa, I love all types of romantic movies.

Favorite Books: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty

Edwards and A Whole New Mind, by Daniel Pink. I enjoy reading about

teaching and learning - it’s my passion.

Favorite Quotation: “I wondered why someone didn’t do

something about the situation - then I remembered I am someone.”

About Me: I live in Mount Prospect with my husband Mark, and

two daughters, Kelly (18) and Hanna (15). Surprisingly, I studied

architecture and graphic design in college. I worked as a creative

director before I decided to study art education, but it was always been

my dream to become an art teacher. It is an honor to teach at Quest

and live my dream.

Meet Beth Blaetz

Director of Teaching and LearningCongratulations to Mrs. Beth Blaetz on her appointment as the Director of Teaching and Learning. After teaching in the classroom at Quest for the past 11 years, she is eager to assume these new responsibilities on July 1.

Ben Hebebrand, Quest Academy Head of School said, “Beth’s appointment is both a testament to our school’s professional development opportunities and to her initiative and passion to continuously pursue targeted professional development in the field of gifted education and specific subject areas. Additionally, Beth has deepened her understanding of student learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or ADD. Throughout her teaching career at Quest Academy, Beth has demonstrated leadership through her work with important volunteer faculty committees such as Admissions, Character Education, Service Learning, Mathematics, and Technology.”

Mrs. Blaetz is officially certified as a Barton Reading and spelling tutor; she holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Blackburn College and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University. Beth was also among the first Quest Academy cohort to earn a master’s level certificate in gifted education from Northwestern University.

Marissa placed 10th in the nation for junior documentaries and Jenna placed 11th in the nation for her paper.

Marissa’s documentary for History Fair has taken on a life of its own. She met several people throughout this experience and has been invited to show her documentary at a Holocaust Survivors meeting in Skokie. As part of her research, Marissa arranged an interview with Mr. David Hamlin, former director of the Illinois ACLU. He sent her an email after viewing her documentary stating:

History Fair is a tremendous opportunity for learning and growth. The skills learned through the research process, along with personal growth are things these students will carry with them throughout their adult lives.

I have just finished watching your National History Day report on the Skokie controversy. I am delighted to tell you that I found it to be simply exceptional in every respect – well researched, carefully balanced, very well organized and constructed and presented in a most engaging and informative fashion.

I can assure you that a number of seasoned reporters who covered the Skokie controversy at the time (and since) did not capture the issues, the controversy or the emotional content of the debate as well as you have done. To cite but one example, I know of no other reporter who took the time (or had the intel-ligence) to secure and present the actual letter Frank Collin sent to Skokie to spawn the controversy – a simple yet powerful detail which virtually all others overlooked.

Alumni ReunionOn June 16 - a beautiful summer evening - at Rivers in downtown Chicago, a group of alumni (21 years and older) gathered. It was a fun and relaxing evening. It was great to see them re-connect with each other and hear what these terrific young alumni are doing.

was a National Merit Commended Scholar and received a 30 on her ACT. She was also an All-State violinist in the Illinois All-State musicals in her Sophomore and Junior years. Alison then attended Oakton Community College for two years, where she was a member of the honors program, Editor-in-Chief of the student paper, and vice president of Students for Social Justice. She received the gold medal from Illinois Community College Journalism Association in 2004 for her editorial on the presidential election. She graduated with a 3.92 GPA, and with a scholarship to San Jose State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology and a 3.87 GPA.

In 2005, Alison realized how all of her 99th percentile standardized test scores could lead to a career. She started teaching SAT prep classes for the Princeton Review while at SJSU, and by the time she graduated, she was promoted to Master Tutor and was teaching SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and MCAT prep.

Today, Alison is back in Chicago caring for her father. She teaches and tutors part-time and has many satisfied students, including many MCAT and GMAT students from Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

2011Spot Auction UpdateQuest Academy’s Fine & Performing Arts ProgramsThanks to the generosity of our Spot Auction donors last March, Quest has acquired several items to enhance our Fine & Performing Arts programs. The welcome additions are shown in the surrounding photos. We anticipate the delivery of our custom made proscenium stage curtain and cyclorama any day. The most costly components of our Fine & Performing Arts enhancements will be in our sound and lighting systems. We are happy to report that we are in the final stages of the bidding process for both systems.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a few moments to watch the video that alumni, Craig Stubing, ’02 and Chapin Gregor, ’02 created and our Auction attendees had the opportunity to watch. Go to our You Tube Chan-nel - QuestAcademyKnights, Performing & Fine Arts Program 2011. Craig, Chapin and their video were instrumental in helping raise over $120,000 so Quest’s arts infrastructure matches the talent of our faculty and our students.

Thank you again Spot Auction donors for making our Fine & Performing Arts programs all that they can and should be!
