EWELCOME TO HERB CAMPBELL!

On behalf of all members of our community – students, staff, parents, and caregivers – I welcome you to Herb Campbell Public School. This Handbook has been created by our School Council in an effort to familiarize families new to our school with important facets of Herb Campbell. Within this document, you will find information regarding policies, procedures, and relevant facts about our school. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the excellent work of Cindy Evers, a member of our School Council, who has spearheaded the creation of this Parent Handbook. The staff of Herb Campbell is committed to establishing positive and effective partnerships with all of the parents and family members within our community. Research is clear that, when partnerships between home and school are strong, children are most likely to be successful. We are proud of the learning and social environment we provide to our students, and we appreciate the commitment parents make to supporting not only their own children, but the school community as a whole. Together, parents and staff make Herb Campbell the outstanding school that it is. Again, it is my privilege to welcome you to the Herb Campbell community. If you require more information about any of the topics covered in this handbook or have questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, our office staff, a member of our School Council, or myself. All the best to you and your family as we start this exciting journey together! Matt McCutcheon Principal

CONTACTING A TEACHER

From time to time, parents may want to contact their children’s teachers with concerns or questions. Each year, every student in grades 1 to 8 has the opportunity, in the first week of school, to purchase a school agenda which contains a great deal of useful information and will have additional material added daily regarding homework, school trips, projects, special events and other announcements. It is important that the agenda go home each night and be returned the following day with a parent or guardian’s signature. The agenda is a great way for communication to happen between home and school, so please feel free to write notes of communication to your child’s teacher. There is a small fee for purchasing the agenda; costs are partially subsidized by the school. If you do not choose to write a note in the agenda you may call the school and leave a message for the teacher to return your call. Please keep in mind that teachers are at the school to teach our children so calls will not be made during their instructional time. However, all effort will be made to return your call within a 24-hour period.

RESOURCE CENTRE Our school is fortunate to be able to provide a collection of more than 14,500 items, in both English and French, for students and staff to borrow. Items available include fiction and non-fiction books, videos, DVDs and magazines. The Resource Centre also includes a computer lab, a teaching and resource centre, a reference section, a listening centre with cassette/CD book kits, and a variety of comfortable reading and work areas. Visit our web page to find more resources, including internet links you may find useful as you work with your children at home and to assist them in locating useful, appropriate and reliable internet sites in relation to their studies and other interests.

SPORTS TEAMS (GO HAWKS!) During the school year there are many exciting events in the area of physical education taking place at the school. Students have the opportunity to participate in intramural sports. Students are also encouraged to try out for the school teams. Interested students should listen to the announcements for additional information. With the support of our teachers there has been a range of activities available for the students such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, flag

football and the list goes on! Stay active and have fun in Herb Campbell Hawk Country!

Herb Campbell Public School – Homework Policy Purpose: At Herb Campbell, homework will serve one of the following purposes:

to review and/or practice concepts or skills previously taught to promote and practice work habits and/or study skills

There could be four possible types of homework tasks that may be assigned throughout the school year. Each type of homework, having a different intended outcome, is outlined below:

Type Definition Intended Outcome Application Completion any work assigned

during the school day not completed in class

Helps students keep up to date with the classroom program

The classroom program should be differentiated if a student requires this type of homework on a regular basis.

Practice any work that reviews and reinforces skills and concepts taught in class

helps students practice newly acquired skills to develop fluency

To be effective, practice homework requires students to already be able to independently perform the skills required.

Preparation any work that prepares students for upcoming lessons or classes

encourages students to acquire background information or to bring their prior knowledge and experiences to upcoming units of study

To be effective, the student should be given the necessary resources (not necessarily Internet-based).

Extension any work that explores and refines learning in new contexts or integrates and expands on classroom learning

encourages students to solve problems, think creatively, and think critically

To be effective, extension homework does not require a student to learn curriculum content independently. Instead, students deepen understanding and relate learning to the real world.

Page 10: Suggestions for Parent Handbook · Kindergarten Students: Morning Kindergarten: 9:15am to 11:45pm Afternoon Kindergarten: 1:05pm to 3:35pm Grades 1 to 8 Students: Entry: 9:10am-9:15am

Responsibilities of Teachers, Students and Families

Responsibilities of the Teachers: preparing students for homework in class by communicating clear instructions and expectations providing suggestions and strategies to families to help with successful homework completion carefully planning homework in partnership with homeroom and rotary teachers assigning tasks that directly relate to curriculum being taught in the classroom monitoring the completion of homework tasks communicating promptly with parents when difficulties with homework or patterns of

incomplete or submitted work are observed providing flexible timelines for homework completion

Responsibilities of the Students: using their agendas to record homework daily using class time productively to avoid the need for excess “completion” homework ensuring that they have all materials needed to complete homework asking questions in class regarding assigned homework to clarify expectations taking advantage of extra help if and when necessary

Responsibilities of the Families: checking the agenda each day to maintain effective communication between home and school providing a quiet environment in which the student can work and the materials necessary for

homework completion providing encouragement and support for their child communicating promptly with teachers when difficulties with homework are observed encouraging reading and reflection each day writing a note, at their discretion, in their child's agenda if homework has not been completed

Page 11: Suggestions for Parent Handbook · Kindergarten Students: Morning Kindergarten: 9:15am to 11:45pm Afternoon Kindergarten: 1:05pm to 3:35pm Grades 1 to 8 Students: Entry: 9:10am-9:15am

Homework Completion: When possible, homework will be assigned with flexible timelines. Time Guidelines: Kindergarten to Grade1: 10 minutes Grade 2 to Grade 3: 15 – 20 minutes Grade 4 to Grade 5: 20 – 30 minutes Grade 6 to Grade 8 30 – 60 minutes The above time ranges are a guideline for the total number of minutes a student should spend on homework on a nightly basis. Therefore, all teachers will need to ensure that they communicate with each other in order to meet these guidelines. There will be a balance of the homework types – completion, practice, preparation and extension. Homework will not be assigned over holidays and weekends. Where possible, tests will not occur on Mondays, nor will assignments be due on Mondays. Teachers are not expected to provide detailed classroom work and homework assignments for students who are away for extended periods of time as a result of family- or parent-initiated absences. For absences due to extended illness, parents may contact teachers to discuss available options. COMMUNICATION:

Assessment: Homework is evaluated in the Learning Skills section of the report card. Therefore, homework will not be evaluated within subject areas. Follow up: There will be consistent, timely follow up by teachers to the homework assigned. The possibilities for homework follow up include: checklists, taking up work together in class, notebook checks, or some other method to acknowledge completion.

Page 12: Suggestions for Parent Handbook · Kindergarten Students: Morning Kindergarten: 9:15am to 11:45pm Afternoon Kindergarten: 1:05pm to 3:35pm Grades 1 to 8 Students: Entry: 9:10am-9:15am

Extenuating circumstances: Sometimes homework cannot be completed for valid reasons. In such cases, communication between classroom teacher and parent should occur via the agenda or a phone call. In this way, appropriate accommodations can be made. Summary: This homework policy requires that all stakeholders work in partnership and with flexibility for the benefit of the students. Homework is intended to promote positive attitudes toward learning and include a variety of activities. Homework expectations need to be clear, practical, relevant, and family friendly. Also, extenuating circumstances for individuals need to be accommodated. Although homework is beneficial in developing work habits, self-discipline, and organization, it will not be assigned every day. Homework will be monitored by the classroom teacher, and assessed only as a Learning Skill. Consequences for incomplete homework will not be punitive but will be communicated with parents. When there is an issue regarding homework, the teachers, parents, and students should communicate in order to resolve any problems. Acknowledgements: This policy has been created through a review and consideration of the following:

SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM Please ensure that the school is aware of your child’s absence or if he or she will be late for school. You may do so by using the student absence report form on the school website at http://herbcampbell.peelschools.org, or by leaving message at the office at 905-838-3952. You will receive a phone call if you do not report your child’s absence or late arrival.

KEEPING OUR SCHOOL SAFE Student safety is our number one priority each and every day at Herb Campbell. The following are a few necessary procedures to ensure we can always account for everyone in the school:

All visitors are required to sign in and out at the Office and obtain a visitor’s badge. If you are dropping off your children in the morning, please say good-bye at the Office

after signing them in and allow them to proceed to their classrooms on their own. If students are being removed from the school during the day, a note is required and

parents are to sign students out in the Office. The expectation is that students will know in advance that they will be able to meet their parents in the office. The person picking up the child must remain in the front hall to wait for the child.

All adult visitors are asked to use the adult washroom that is located just inside the principal’s office to the right.

PICKING UP STUDENTS: END OF THE DAY

If students are picked up before 3:35 p.m., they are missing instructional time in specific subject areas. Office staff will not interrupt classes after 3:00 p.m. to call students out early who are routinely picked up before the bell. Instead, parents who choose to pick up their children rather than have them ride the bus will have to wait until after the dismissal bell. Parents are not required to sign out children in the Office if they are being picked up after dismissal bell, as the sign-out process (see “safety” above) is only a legal requirement during the instructional day, which ends at 3:35 p.m.

NO NUTS/PEANUTS PLEASE Herb Campbell has adopted a no nuts/peanuts policy to provide an educational environment that is safe for all children. Parents are asked not to send any products containing peanuts, tree nuts (almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, etc.,), and/or their oils with their children to school. Beans and seeds such as soybeans and other soy products, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds are not included in this policy. Manufacturers are getting better about labeling their product ingredients. This information appears on the product label near the “Nutrition Facts,” usually just below the ingredients listing. Companies have the right to change their products’ ingredients at any time, so please review this information carefully prior to sending all food items to school with your child. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

MEDICATION (PRESCRIPTIONS) AT SCHOOL It is the policy of the Peel District School Board that teachers, teaching assistants, secretaries, lunchroom supervisors and volunteers should not be involved with the administration of medication that can be administered before or after school. The exception to this rule is, if in the opinion of a practicing physician a particular student requires medication during the school day, a form called Administration of Prescribed Medication must be completed by the student’s physician and kept on file in the school Office. This policy applies to any medication brought to school including Epi-pens, inhalers, and Tylenol. Medication must be in the original, dated prescription container with the student’s name on it along with the dosage/frequency. Other students should not have access to the medication. It is understood that certain students must keep with them their inhalers and Epi-pens due to life threatening situations.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS Each student in our intermediate grades will be assigned a locker to share with one other individual in the same grade. Students are responsible for the security and organization of the lockers. Students should not share the lock combination with anyone but their locker partner. At the beginning of the year students may purchase or split the cost of a lock with their locker partner. Only Dudley locks with a serial number may be used. The serial number, combination and locker number will be retained in the Office. Lockers may be used only at the entry, first and second nutrition breaks and dismissal times, unless given permission by the teacher. The locker remains the property of the Peel District School Board and is open to access by the principal or designate at any time.

VALUABLES

Students are asked to please leave all items of value at home. These items include in-line skates, skateboards, personal listening devices, cell phones, digital cameras, laptop computers, video games, other electronic devices, large sums of money and expensive jewelry. The school does not assume responsibility for damage or theft if such items are brought to school, and some of the items listed present safety issues. There are no laser light pointers permitted at school.

LOST AND FOUND The Lost and Found bins are located in the Link area (outside of the kindergarten rooms) of the school. Parents are permitted to check these bins before and after school any day. However, these bins will be unavailable to parents during the school day. Please encourage your child to check these boxes regularly for items that may be lost. At the end of each month we collect all items and send them to charity so that they may be put to good use.

STANDARDIZED TESTS

The use of standardized tests may occur at two levels: in-school or regional. Standardized tests may be administered to any student if the classroom teacher expresses concern about the student’s functioning levels in language arts and mathematics, or if the In-School Review Committee recommends such testing. A standardized test may also be employed once per year to measure each student’s growth in reading and mathematics. In grade 4, two standardized tests have been administered throughout the school district:

Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (C.C.A.T.), utilized to assess each student’s mental abilities.

Canadian Achievement Test (C.A.T. 3), utilized to assess each student’s achievement levels in vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension and mathematics.

The tests have been supplemented with the Education Quality Accountability Office (EQAO) provincial testing. At Herb Campbell, students in grades 3 and 6 will participate in this provincial test. These tests are usually administered to students each year in the last two weeks of May and first week of June. The resulting data are used in conjunction with existing information to help aid in necessary modifications or extensions to classroom programs. For more information click onto www.eqao.com.

Code of Conduct

Herb Campbell Public School 2008/2009

Statement of Purpose:

In order to maintain a mutually respectful learning environment for everyone, it is important that

all members of the Herb Campbell community including students, staff, parents, and visitors

work together. By following our Code of Conduct, we help everyone achieve his/her full

potential.

There are four main components of our Code of Conduct. They are:

1) We become positive members of our community when we speak and act with respect.

We respect ourselves, all members of our community, and property

We value diversity

We use socially inclusive and acceptable language and gestures to communicate

We demonstrate honesty and integrity

2) We wear attire that demonstrates respect for self and others.

We dress appropriately for each situation and ensure that undergarments are

covered completely

We wear clothing with positive language and/or images

We maintain personal hygiene

3) We take responsibility for our own learning, and respect the learning of others.

We attend school regularly and are punctual

We come prepared for class

We seek and offer support when necessary

4) We only bring items to school which contribute to a positive learning environment.

We use electronic devices at school for approved curricular or extra-curricular

activities

Items whose purpose may be considered dangerous (e.g. weapons, replica

weapons, firecrackers, gang related materials, etc.) must not be brought to school

No one will possess or be under the influence of restricted drugs or alcohol

Page 17: Suggestions for Parent Handbook · Kindergarten Students: Morning Kindergarten: 9:15am to 11:45pm Afternoon Kindergarten: 1:05pm to 3:35pm Grades 1 to 8 Students: Entry: 9:10am-9:15am

Interventions and Consequences for Students:

From time to time, students may need reminders regarding these rules. These reminders

will take the form of early and ongoing interventions as well as logical consequences for

actions. Each situation will be considered based on the students' circumstances, the

nature, severity, and frequency of the behaviour, as well as the impact of the behaviour

on school climate.

When consequences are necessary, they will be progressive in nature. Progressive

discipline is a non-punitive, whole-community approach that uses a continuum of

corrective and supportive interventions and consequences. These measures will address

inappropriate behaviour while providing opportunities to build upon strategies that

promote positive behaviours. Regular communication and partnership with parents is an

integral part of this process.

Interventions and consequences that may be considered for students include:

Oral reminders

Review of expectations

Contact with parents/guardians

Restorative practices

Written assignments addressing the behaviour that have a learning component

Counselling

Conflict mediation and resolution

Detentions

Withdrawal of privileges

Removal from class

Restitution for damages

Suspension

Expulsion

Bullying Prevention and Intervention We are teaching students to identify bullying behavior. We are also giving them strategies to deal with bullying and to stop it from happening. Bullying is typically a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behavior directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. When someone experiences or observes bullying behavior, he/she is expected to report it to a teacher, teaching assistant or school administrator immediately. Bullying behavior will be dealt with using a progressive discipline approach.

TRANSPORTATION, PARKING AND BUSING

KISS ’N RIDE

The Kiss ’n Ride area is situated at the front of the school. It provides a safe location for parents to drop their children off in the morning. It is open from 9:00 until 9:10 a.m., during which time staff supervision is provided. Students should not be dropped off prior to 9:00 a.m. unless there has been an arrangement made with a member of the staff (e.g., extra help, extracurricular sports or clubs, etc.).

To further assist with the safe arrival for the students in the Kiss ‘n Ride area, we ask that you be mindful of the following:

All vehicles should move fully around the Kiss ‘n Ride circle to the point where our staff is standing.

All students should exit on the passenger (right) side of the vehicle. No passing is allowed in this area. Delays are usually brief and passing cars

present a serious safety concern. Please drive slowly!

End of the Day: Please wait in the Kiss n Ride Area until you child comes outside. Do not park in the Kiss n Ride area and go inside. If you wish to park please use the parking lot at the back of the school.

BUSING

Bus information and times may be found at www.stopr.cawww.stopr.ca

You will need your student’s OEN number to log in. You can find the OEN number at

the top of the report card. This number is different than the student number that they use

at school for taking out library books or internet access.

In an effort to carefully monitor the number of students on each bus in order to ensure they are not overly crowded, students are only permitted to ride their assigned bus. This ensures a safe number of students on each bus, and to ensure exactly who is on each bus. If you have any transportation issues or concerns please contact the vice principal.

Page 19: Suggestions for Parent Handbook · Kindergarten Students: Morning Kindergarten: 9:15am to 11:45pm Afternoon Kindergarten: 1:05pm to 3:35pm Grades 1 to 8 Students: Entry: 9:10am-9:15am

SNOW (NO BUS) DAYS Inclement weather (e.g., freezing rain, snow) may cause the disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. This decision is usually made by 6:45 am. For accurate and up-to-date bus information, you can call the Board at 905-890-1010 or 1-800-668-1146 or visit the board’s website at: www.peelschools.org. You will receive one of the following messages: Buses are cancelled. This message means that schools remain open for students but transportation services provided by the Peel District School Board are cancelled. If buses are cancelled, they will remain cancelled for the duration of the day. Herb Campbell will remain open if buses are cancelled, and it will be parents’ responsibility to decide if conditions are safe to transport their children to and from school. All students must be picked up promptly at 3:35. Schools are closed. This message means that, due to bad weather conditions, schools are closed to students. All schools and Peel Board facilities are closed. This message means that, due to the severity of the weather conditions, schools and board offices are closed to students and staff. You can also tune into one of the following radio stations: CKFM, CHIN, CHUM, CJCL, CFTR, CHFI, CISS FM, CBC, CIAO, CFNY, CFRB, DC103FM, CHAY, Q107, AM640, CJMR, WHWO, CHEZ, CJBC, 680 NEWS. CFTO, Global and CITY TV also offer accurate an up-to-the-minute information on bus cancellations and school closings. Please note that there will be no penalty to students if they are unable to attend school on a snow day. They will not miss tests, new assignments and no new lessons will be taught. Subscribe on the school website and you will receive an email alert that the buses are cancelled. Cancellations are also available on the STOPR website www.stopr.ca

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

CLUBS There are many clubs for students to join over the course of the school year. In past years, students have participated in of the chess club, radio club, eco-club, knitting club, choir, band, forest of reading … and the list goes on. Students are encouraged to listen to daily announcements and watch postings for details. INTRAMURAL SPORTS Girls and boys in all grades are encouraged to join in games and seasonal sports. They are set up and played during nutrition breaks. Or try out and be part of the Herb Campbell Hawks! EXCURSIONS Field trips and excursions can provide opportunities for lasting and meaningful learning experiences. The practice of excursions away from the school is supported by the school as an integral part of the K-8 curriculum. In the past, our students have visited the Jack Smythe Field Centre, the Old Britannia School House, the National Ballet School, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Downey’s Farm and Crawford Lake. Notices of field trips, including permission forms, will be sent home with students over the course of the year. OVERNIGHT TRIPS In past years, our grade six students have gone to camp (in cabins!) at nearby Cedar Glen, our grade sevens have visited Ottawa, and our grade eights have been to Québec. We hope to be able to offer similar overnight trips each year; please watch your children’s agendas for information on future trips.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS: GETTING INVOLVED Once your child has started school, there are many ways to continue to support his/her education by being a partner with the school.

STAY INFORMED Herb Campbell has newsletters that are posted on the website at the beginning of each month that summarize important school events, issues and outline upcoming activities. A monthly calendar is also posted to keep you informed. If you cannot access the newsletter and calendar online you may request a hard copy. Please contact the office to arrange this. SCHOOL COUNCIL Why do we need school councils? The Ontario provincial government requires all schools to have a school council. School councils support the Peel Board’s school success planning goals and allow parents to play an active role in the education of their children. Research indicates that there is a clear connection between parent involvement and student achievement. Who can be a member of school council? The majority of members on school council must be parents or guardians of students enrolled at the school. School councils will have a minimum of nine members, or 11 members if there are student representatives. Council membership should reflect the diversity of the school community. School staff cannot be parent members of the school council and neither school nor Board staff can serve as council chair. What is the role of a school council? School councils advise principals, superintendents and school trustees on educational topics including:

Planning for improvement of student progress School activity calendar Code of conduct School program priorities and curriculum delivery Budget priorities Ways to promote communication between parents and the school Principal selection criteria Extracurricular activities School-based services Conflict resolution School Profile

In addition, a school council will:

Establish and review council goals, objectives, action plans and procedures each year. Hold a minimum of four meetings each year. Organize training for council members. Communicate regularly with parents and the school community. Prepare an annual report. Make recommendations to the principal about issues that affect the school.

HERB CAMPBELL COMMUNITY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION HCCSA is a group of parent volunteers committed to making our school the best possible environment for our children. It is also a vehicle for parents to receive information about events in the community. Meetings provide a forum for parents to work together with the school administration and to allow for the input of ideas for allocation of funds raised through special events such as bagel days, pizza days, Breakfast with Santa and other fundraising. It also rents out the school’s space after hours, enabling the community to access the school’s facilities. HCCSA is a great source of support for our school. Meetings are held each month from September to June. Please contact the school or look for the flyers in your child’s agenda for further details on upcoming meetings and events.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE SCHOOL If you have some spare time on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, you may wish to consider becoming a school volunteer. Participate in special school events, volunteer for class trips, or help out in your child’s classroom. Your time is very much appreciated. If you wish to volunteer for any of the above please contact your child’s teacher or the vice principal.

PARENTS RAISING READERS Become a Parents Raising Readers team member. Your task will be to mentor and coach students in a quiet, one-on-one environment at the school using books provided at the student’s reading level. What a great way to get involved, help improve a student’s self-confidence, and foster a love of reading. Please contact the school for more information. “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the further you’ll go.” -- Dr. Seuss

LUNCH SUPERVISION Occasionally the school is looking for lunch supervisors for nutrition breaks. This is a paid position.
