ASH WEDNESDAY, 2019

Ash Wednesday will be this week on March 6th. Our schedule that day will be:

7:30AM - Mass – English 9:00AM -- Mass – English 12 Noon – Mass – English and Spanish 5:30PM – Service – English 6:45PM – Mass – English 8:00PM – Mass – Spanish

Ashes will be distributed during each of these liturgies.

There will be small packets of ashes together with a short prayer service that can be brought to and used for any persons who are sick or homebound.

This year Lent begins on March 6th, which is Ash Wednesday. From Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday we count 46 days, but since Sunday is our weekly renewal of Easter the Sundays of Lent are not counted as days of Lent. Leaving out the Sundays of Lent gives us the forty days we observe as special days of prayer, good works and self-denial. When we think of practices for Lent all of us think of Mass. Mass is our fullest expression of prayer as the Church. It is the source of life for our living the Gospel in our world. At St. Peter and St. Mary Church we celebrate six Sunday Masses and two Masses each weekday. A small change in one’s schedule or routine may make it possible to come to Mass sometime during the week. Every Tuesday from after the 9AM morning Mass until Night Prayer and Benediction at 7:45PM our Lord waits for us in our church in the weekly Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It offers us a great opportunity to spend this special time with our Savior in a setting of peace and recollection. The Sacrament of Penance will be available for additional time on Saturdays during Lent, beginning at 3PM until 4:45PM; we plan to have the Sacrament of Penance between and during Masses on Sunday, March 24th; in Holy Week on Monday, April 15th and Wednesday April 17h there will be more opportunities for the celebration of this sacrament. Also, individual appointments for Penance may be made with Fr. Hernandez or Fr. Madden. In addition, during Lent we will have Stations of the Cross: in English on Friday’s at 7:00PM; in Spanish on Thursdays after the 7:30PM Mass. There will be a mission for our parishioners who speak Spanish from Sunday, March 31st through Friday, April 5th, and a mission for our parishioners who speak English in May (dates being planned).

GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: THE 4 LIES THAT HAVE RUINED LIVES

A blind person, in the analogy that Jesus makes in this Sunday's Gospel reading, is anyone who cannot see things in the light of truth. It can be due to sin or ignorance, but it's always dangerous. There are many wrong decisions that we bump into when we don't see things the way God sees them. We make mistakes that hurt us and others. We feel safe with temptations that lead us away from God. Here are four popular lies that are ruining lives by leading people into spiritual blindness, followed by the truths that everyone needs to know. 1. Your happiness is the most important goal. To achieve it: 2. Put yourself first. 3. Trust your feelings. 4. If you dream it, you can have it. This never works. Happiness is elusive or, at best, short. So, people try even harder, stuck in the trap of these lies. When it still doesn't work, they get angry, but at others, blaming others. Conflicts worsen. Anger increases. Violence is the eventual outcome, and spiritual hell. The only way that does work is what Jesus revealed. 1. Happiness is based on externals, which you cannot control very long. Joy, on the other hand, comes from within and is discovered when you understand that God loves you so much that he gave you his only begotten Son to conquer evil and lead you to the eternal joy of heaven. 2. When you lay down your life for others, you experience fulfillment from making a difference, and this is a great joy. And it unites you to Christ, bringing heaven to earth. 3. Realize your natural tendency to sin and the limitations of your finite brain, which make it easy to misinterpret everything. Do not trust your own understanding. Feelings can change quickly. Receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit so you can discern God's guidance. Trust only God. 4. When you seek to know God's dreams for you, you develop good vision. You discover which talents, knowledge, and experiences will give you your greatest fulfillment, because he had these in mind when he created you. And when you work hard to make these dreams come true, forsaking distractions, persisting past obstacles, and accepting the lessons that are hidden in hardships, you realize the best that life can offer. Which of the four lies described above have you been blinded by? How has believing them made you feel? Give an example for each of the four truths described above. How has each one given you joy? How do they help you see Jesus more clearly? © 2019 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Printed by permission.

© 2019 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com.
