STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT:
How will all know we are disciples of
Jesus? We are told in our Gospel reading
today that it will be because of our love
for one another. Simple actions of joy
and gratitude can express great love for both God and
our neighbor. How are we expressing joy in our lives
to show love to others? Are we grateful for all of the
simple ways others show love for us?

Deacon Larry preaches this weekend. Thank you, Deacon Larry, for
your ministry to us. First Holy Communion for St. Paul Parishioners
was a joyous celebration. We had 17 students. Three priests who
were connected with the families of three of the first communicants
concelebrated the liturgy. The innocence of the children is always
a joy to see and imitate. Thank you to their parents, godparents,
teachers at CCD and St. Paul School, Mrs. Peggy Fitch, CCD
Coordinator and Mr. Pancurak, principal, for their work in
preparing our students. Mr. Joe McKim provided the music. Relatives
of the first communicants were cantors and altar servers. Thank you
to everyone for your help. Madre Visitación de Maria, Sister Maria
Ecclesiae and Postulant (Ellie) Schlueter were present with us at
St. Paul for the Sunday Masses. Ellie, whose home parish is St.
Paul, Salem, was beaming as she spoke on her vocation. The sisters
belong to the Daughters of Holy Mary of the Heart of Jesus, a
congregation that originated in Spain. They are located in
Steubenville, and their website is hsmcj.org. When you go to the
website, click on the American flag for English. The sisters were
visiting area schools and speaking on vocations. They visited sixth
grade at St. Paul School on Monday and were at the school Mass on
Wednesday. Parents with children aged infant through third grade
from St. Patrick and St. Paul Parishes – and perhaps from a
neighboring parish, met on Wednesday this past week. (I am actually
writing on Tuesday, so I trust we had a good time.) More of the 56

Diocesan & Local Events – April 24, 2016
Why Mercy Makes Us Uncomfortable In his second Encyclical, Dives
in Misericordia, St. John Paul II highlighted the fact that we had
forgotten the theme of mercy in today’s cultural milieu: “The
present day mentality, more perhaps than that of people in the
past, seems opposed to a God of mercy, and in fact, tends to
exclude from life and to remove from the human heart, the very idea
of mercy. The word and the concept of ‘mercy’ seem to cause
uneasiness in man, who, thanks to the enormous development of
science and technology, never before known in history, has become
the master of the earth
and has subdued and dominated it.”
Mercy makes us uncomfortable because it necessitates the
admission of our powerlessness, and the acknowledgement that we are
not, in fact, God. Mercy demands that we have the humility to
concede that we are creatures who are utterly dependent on God.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI tells us that we need to come to see
that we are one of many among God’s creatures, all of which turn
around God as their center. Asking for and extending mercy requires
that we do both: recognize our human fragility and profound need
for help, while returning to the basics….to bear the weaknesses and
struggles of our brothers and sisters.
Pope Francis, following the lead of St. John Paul II,
unceasingly pushes for what he insists is an “urgent” need for the
proclamation and witness of mercy in the world. Judy Landrieu

2016 Bishop’s Appeal Thank you to those members of our parishes
who have responded to the in-mail phase or the in-pew packet. The
Appeal, in its 20th year, is the primary funding source for
Catholic
Charities in our six-county diocese. There has been an
ever-increasing number of needy persons coming to Catholic
Charities for help, and they depend on our support of the Bishop’s
Appeal. This year, St. Paul’s goal is $51,729; $ 45,505 has been
pledged to date, and St. Patrick’s goal is $12,994, $ 8,305 has
been pledged to date. Bishop Murry is counting on our support of
the 2016 Bishop’s Appeal.
