The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God January 1, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. This is the most ancient Marian feast in which we honor Mary as the “Bearer of the Eternal

Word.” Let’s honor Mary by praying for peace in the world as we start the new year. Please join us on this Holy Day of Obligation on December 31, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Charles Church and 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s, Glen Haven. On January 1, 2019 there will be an 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. John’s, Patch Grove and a 9:15 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s, Bloomington.

Year End Giving As we celebrate the joy of the Christmas season and prepare for 2019, please know that your financial support is deeply appreciated and needed for the opera-tion of our parishes and Catholic schools. God bless!

Fr. John’s Notes Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph On the Sunday after Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ human family. Appropriate to the season, we usually visualize the Holy Family as they appear in the typical nativity

scene: the baby Jesus lying in the manger, surrounded by his doting parents. But Joseph, Mary, and Jesus lived together for many years, through Jesus’ infancy, childhood, adolescence, and maybe even into his adulthood. As we celebrate the Holy Family, let us think of the families that we have been part of, both as children and as adults.

Christmas Thank You’s I would like to thank Fr. Greg Ihm for helping with our Christmas Masses. I deeply appreciated that he was able to join us this year for Christmas.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make our churches beautiful inside and out for Christmas. Thank you to all who gave donations for the flowers and decorations. We can be very proud of our beautiful churches. Thank you to everyone who has very generously supported our parishes throughout the year and at Christmas-time. May God’s love and blessings be with you and your family in 2019!

REMEMBRANCE As we say farewell to 2018, it is a good time to remember the people who were baptized, married and who died this past year from our parishes.

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 30, 2018

Celebrate Life This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Though he was conceived of a virgin, Jesus nevertheless lived as a son in a human family -- a family which points the way for the

rest of us. The family is the sanctuary of life. There can be no life without family, and there can be no family without life. The family, above all, is where life is to be welcomed, no matter how fragile or inconvenient it may be. One of the many reasons why the St. John Paul II, in “The Gospel of Life” encyclical, identifies abortion and euthanasia as pre-eminent issues is because these crimes are committed by one family member upon another. May the Holy Family lead us to a Culture of Life!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commit-ments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, convers-ing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family home-stead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
