Baptism: We joyfully welcome to God’s holy family Bennett Robert Redman, son of Brian and Lindsay Redman, who was baptized at St. Mary

Church, Bloomington.

Sharing Our Blessings: Thank you to everyone who has supported our parishes with their time, talents and financial support! May God continue to bless you for your generosity and kindness. Please pray for the financial health of our parishes and that all members will generously share the many blessings that God has given them with our parishes.

Fr. John’s Notes: Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time: Our Sunday focus on discipleship continues in today’s readings. We who were called to live the Beatitudes last week are encourages to let our light shine. As we move though or celebration today, let is ask God to strengthen our faith so that we can truly believe that the presence of Christ in each of us has the power to bring light to the darkness of racism, fear, oppression, and all other evils in our world.

Beatitude Reflections: Last Sunday, we heard and reflected upon the summary of Jesus’ teachings in the Beatitudes. During the next four weeks before Lent, we will hear a part of the extensive teaching of Jesus as recorded in Matthew’s Gospel. It is what is unique to Jesus Christ and always challenges us. I have selected several sentences that summarize each week’s teaching. I hope we can remember the message as we go through our winter week. For this first week of February, we have the image that has childlike simplicity. “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” But it takes much love in our heart and charity for us to be that light.

Time Away from the Parishes: I will be away from the parishes February 6-15. Fr. Tom Manahan along with Fr. Seipp will be here for the February 11-12 weekend Masses. If there is a pastoral emergency while I’m away, please call the St. Mary’s Parish office at 994-2526 or Julie Jentz at 994-2720.

St. Blaise: Since we celebrated the Feast Day of St. Blaise on Friday, February 3, and we will have the blessing of throats, invoking his intersession at Masses this weekend, I thought it would be a good time to remember who St. Blaise was and why we offer this blessing. We know that Bishop Blaise was martyred in his episcopal city of Sebastea, Armenia, in 316. The legendary Acts of St. Blaise were written 400

years later. According to them St. Blaise devoted the early years of his life to the study of Philosophy and later became a physician. He was ordained to the priesthood and made Bishop of Sebastea. Blaise was a good bishop, working hard to encourage the spiritual and physical health of his people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311), granting free-dom of worship in the Roman Empire, was already five years old, persecution still raged in Armenia. St. Blaise was arrested and sent to prison by Agricolus, the Governor. Agricolaus tried to persuade Bishop Blaise to sacrifice to pagan idols, but he refused. Blaise was beaten and then cruelly tortured before being beheaded . Legend has it that as St. Blaise was being taken to prison, a mother came with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At Blaise’s command the child was able to cough up the bone. Since that time his aid has been sought for ailments of the throat.

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time February 5, 2017

Celebrate Life: Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical “God is Love” teaches that “agape, which [is]…the typical expression for the biblical notion of

love….expresses the experience of a love which involves a real discovery of the other, moving beyond the selfish character that prevailed earlier. Love now becomes concern and care for the other. No longer is it self-seeking, a sinking in the intoxication of happiness; instead it seeks the good of the beloved: it becomes renunciation and it is ready, and even willing, for sacrifice” (n. 6). This kind of love is seen in a particular way when we care for the weak and defenseless, both born and unborn. May the Pope’s encyclical encourage us to build a culture of life!
