Evangelization in the Diocese Last week I quoted Bishop Hying as he articulated his vision of the importance of evangelization for our Catholic Church at this moment of history. In his Pastoral Letter from the May28, 2020 issue of the

Catholic Herald, Bishop Hying gives this reflection: But He also redeems us and that changes everything. Christ's Passion and death does not take away that which we endure, but it elevates it to the divine and transforms it. As our Lord promised, by taking up our crosses in the way that He did, we can also follow in His Resurrection and in Eternal Life.1 It changes the trajectory of human existence. It SHOULD change everything about the way we live. Fear, anxiety, pain, sorrow, all of it can be united to His. Hope of eternal life shatters our despair. Evangelization is a word we associate with some Protestant churches. It often make us uncomfortable because we can not see ourselves witnessing to Jesus in the way we sometimes experience with how others portray it. We also may have reacted negatively to some attempts to promote some versions of evangelical Christianity. But when we come to look to the future for our children we want them to not only learn about the Catholic Faith, but to value a Catholic way of life and be proud to be a Catholic. We need to help them to live the Catholic faith at home, learn about it through the Catechetical efforts of the parish in our schools and religious education programs, and by praying together and celebrating the sacraments at Church. This year it has been much more difficult to keep all the facets of Catholic parish life strong. But the difficulties should not stifle us. We have our schools going, we will have our religious education classes running, and I pray all families can all worship in Church on Sundays. Learning and living our Catholic faith is so very important especially in 2020.

MESSAGE FROM FR. PAUL FAGAN Dear Friends of many many years, In Tanzania we often hear the Swahili word “changamoto” used to describe a difficult situation. Perhaps it is best translated as “challenge”. I have been back home for about 6 weeks. The first two weeks were self quarantine. Since then I have been dealing with how to communicate with all of my friends in the 14 parishes that have supported my work in Tanzania, some of them since I bought a John Deere tractor back in 1974. When I left Tanzania, my hope and prayer was that Covid 19 would be coming under control in the USA and that I would be able to reschedule my regular visits to the various parishes at a later date. I found the situation different than that of Nkololo where there were no known cases of Covid 19. I left with obvious concerns about my safety, but due to issues with my eyes, dental concerns, my annual check- up and my annual supply of two heart medicines I made the long safari. My fellow pastors in several parishes advised me to find an alternate way of communicating my annual update to all of you. It was suggested that the simplest way was to write several installments for the the parish bulletins. Consequently you will be hearing from me via your parish bulletin when there is space for my updates. My concern is that “out of sight, out of mind” may hold true. I pray that it will not be so as I am still in the front line, especially in our efforts to complete our Songambele Health Center. You may continue your help by writing a check to Roads to Life Tanzania and sending it to PO Box 157, Prairie du Chien, WI 53821.
