COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Project Compassion During the season of Lent we are challenged to go without some of the luxuries we enjoy and donate the money we save to assist the needy of our world. Students attending our Catholic schools are encouraged to support Project Compassion. This fundraising project is run during Lent each year by Caritas, a Catholic agency for international aid and development. Caritas is the Latin word for “love and compassion”, the two qualities central to the agencies work. Our fundraising dollars can do amazing things for the world’s poor, for example:

• $10 can provide a family with a water filter to access clean, safe water and reduce disease in Cambodia.

• $30 can provide materials, books and resources for skill training for one person for a year in Papua New Guinea.

• $50 can buy a bicycle for a young person to travel to school and use for work in Cambodia.

• $100 can buy basic tools for a young person to learn carpentry at the Matuba Children’s Centre in Mozambique

• $500 can provide marketing skills training for 100 people for a year in Papua New Guinea.

• $1000 can train a rural midwife to assist women and babies in rural Bangladesh

• $2000 can help provide a healing workshop for an Indigenous community in Northern Australia.

I encourage students, families and staff members to support these fundraisers so that we can play our part in breaking the cycle of poverty and injustice in our world. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION Centenary Book After many months of research and preparation, the Centenary Book is almost ready for print. This comprehensive historical document will be professionally printed and will include photos and stories of Catholic education in St Agnes’ Parish. It will include St Joseph’s Family Services and all Parish schools and will be very reasonably priced at just $20. How many books should we have printed? A very good question. We are very keen to find out how many people are interested in purchasing a copy of the Centenary Book which is anticipated to be available in May this year. We would really appreciate your expression of interest to help us gauge the demand. All expressions of interest to Parish Administration – 6588 7444 or email: [email protected] Thank you for your assistance. John McQueen Director Parish Education

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Inaugural School Mass Last Wednesday the College community gathered with Fr. James to celebrate our Inaugural School Mass. The theme for our Mass drew upon our College theme which calls for us to ‘act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God’. Our sharing in the Word and Eucharist reinforced our commitment to walk with Jesus in our journey of faith. I would like to thank Fr. James, Year 12 Coordinator, Ms Heidi Flanagan, our Leader of Religious Education and Catechises, Mrs Nora Swain, Mrs Helen Gilbert - Assistant Leader of Catechises, Mrs Wendy Welsh, Ms Jasmine Ryan, Mrs Debbie Hill and Mrs Sharon Green for their tremendous efforts in making our Mass such a memorable event. Also, thank you to all those teachers who worked in the background by assisting in setting up our sacred space. To our students who were actively involved in the Mass with the readings of the day, prayers of intercession, altar serving and music. A big THANK YOU! to all of these students. Congratulations also to the wider student community who conducted themselves with a great sense of reverence during the Mass. The Mass also gave the school community to opportunity to formally welcome Fr. James to the Chaplaincy role at St Joseph’s Regional College. We look forward to working with Fr. James throughout the year. Thank you also to St Agnes’ Parish Education Officer, Mr John Macqueen for being part of our thanksgiving and celebratory gathering.

Induction of New SRC Leaders (SRC Badge Leaders) At the conclusion of our Mass, our Leader of the SRC, Mr Daniel O’Mullane officiated the induction of our new SRC members in the College.

Congratulations to the following students:

• Tahnee Borg and Jamie Lightfoot (Year 11) • Eleanor Wright and Christopher Treeves. (Year 10) • Mary Shelly and Matthew Le (Year 9) • Cassidy New and Alexander Ross (Year 8)

Please read a copy of Daniel’s speech summarising the importance of student leadership here at St Joseph’s Regional College.

SRC Leaders 2013- Speech by Mr Daniel O’Mullane

Being a leader in our College is certainly a privilege and the students standing before you today have been selected by their peers to be your voice in our College community. Collectively, they make up the Student Representative Council. The SRC meet regularly to discuss important issues and set achievable goals which help to support the entire College community. They organise fundraising activities, social events and discuss matters relevant to the entire College population.

This morning we would like to acknowledge the entire Student Leadership body, to thank them for the work they have already undertaken and to wish them the best of luck as they help to lead our College this year. We would like our House Prefects and College Captains to assist in the induction of our SRC leaders in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 by pinning on their SRC badges.

Could the Flinders House Prefects, Sophie Gray and Liam Wright please come forward to present our Year 11 SRC students with their badges, congratulations to: Tahnee Borg and Jamie Lightfoot

If the Innes House Prefects Tiarna Semchychyn and Liam Rourke could come forward to present the Year 10 SRC students with their badges, congratulations to: Eleanor Wright and Christopher Treeves. Our Macquarie House Prefects Samantha Bayly and James Dick will now come forward to present the Year 9 SRC students with their badges, congratulations to: Mary Shelley and Matthew Le. Finally the Oxley House Prefects Bryden Sloane-Harris and Tim Border who is standing in for Tim Bleadsdale, will present the Year 8 SRC students with their badges, congratulations to: Cassidy New and Alexander Ross.

Good luck to all of our College student leaders. We are confident that you will fulfil your roles with dedication and enthusiasm. Congratulations to our 2013 College leaders.

God Bless,

Jim Dempsey Principal

OUR SYMPATHY

OUR SYMPATHY: To the families, friends and St Joseph's Laurieton community on the deaths of Luke O'Neill and Adam Augey. Both young men attended St Joseph's Laurieton and were active members of the Camden Haven sporting community with many of our current students. The College Counsellor is available if any of our students feel they would like to chat. Please contact the College office, your child's PC teacher, Pastoral Coordinator or Mrs Eichmann if you would like to arrange an appointment.

Year 7 Parent-Teacher Night and BBQ The Year 7 Parent-Teacher Night and BBQ will be held on Tuesday, 5th March from 4.00 -7.00pm. This evening provides a great opportunity to meet your child's teachers and new friends, as well as liaise with other parents. Please ensure you have booked times to meet with each teacher as per the letter sent home last Monday. If you have any difficulties please don't hesitate to contact me, or the ladies in the front office. This night is very important in your child's education and their transition into high school. We look forward to meeting with you.

FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR

COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMISSIONING CEREMONY This week at each of the house assemblies a commissioning ceremony was held to launch our community service initiatives this year and to present badges to the representatives in each Pastoral Care class. Parents can read more about this program in the blue pages of the student diary (pages 19-20). As part of the ceremony, a power point was shown that highlight our students involvement in a variety of activities. Some of these community service projects were: visiting age care facilities, involvement in Vinnies Buddies Days and Camps, surf lifesaving, teaching seniors computer skills, donating blood, mowing the lawn for a neighbour and cooking a meal for the family. Students are asked to fill in the pages in their diary so they have a record of their involvement. As Mary MacKillop said, “Never see a need without doing something about it.” MORNING TEA FOR NEW STUDENTS Thank you to Kerrie Badewitz for organising and preparing our morning tea for the new students in our school community. There are 33 new students in years 8-12. The morning tea was a wonderful opportunity to meet each other and not to feel so isolated as new members of the community. Thank you to Leesa Nardella for also helping out as a parent. OPENING SCHOOL LITURGY Our opening school liturgy was held this week. The celebration reflected our school theme for 2013 Act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God. Thank you to everyone for their involvement: singers and musicians, readers, those involved in processions and the setup of the sacred space. We have so much to celebrate and the liturgy is an opportunity to gather as a faith community to give thanks for the wonderful opportunities we have available to us here at St Joseph’s Regional College. This was also an occasion to recognise our student leaders and present them with their badges acknowledging the important role they play in our college community. PROJECT COMPASSION Planning for activities to raise awareness and funds for Caritas and Project Compassion have begun this week. Thank you to Mr Johnson and his helpers who organised a coin line PC competition. An Easter egg raffle, BBQ and a benefit concert are also being planned for various weeks this term. YEAR 7 REFLECTION DAY A note about the Year 7 reflection Day went out this week. This is a day that compliments the unit they are studying in the Religious Education: Belonging to Church and School Communities. We would like to add that we do not want students to bring their ipads with them on Monday. We recognise the risk of damage, so would really appreciate that parents explained this to their son/daughters.

FROM THE CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

The assessment planners for Term 1 went out to all students last week and an electronic copy is also located on the College Moodle page under the Curriculum tab. Now is the time for students to look at what task they have over the next 4 weeks and ensure they prepare as thoroughly as possible. Students are also reminded that if they know they will be absent from a task or are absent on the day of a task then they must contact me at school to organise alternative arrangements.
