COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE A core belief of us as Christian is that God wants our happiness and gives us the freedom to make good choices that will ultimately improve our well-being. Research on the topic of positive psychology has shown that it is possible to increase happiness by becoming more engaged in your work or study and by finding time to reflect on various facets of your life. Releasing anger and resentment caused by others as well as performing small acts of kindness will not only make you feel good about yourself but will also improve your connections to others. Some other good advice to improve well-being from “Health Matters” includes:

Savour – become more aware of pleasure and give conscious attention to the experience of pleasure.

Share your experiences with others – tell them how much you valued a particular moment or experience.

Build memories – take mental photographs of your experiences, so you can reflect on them later with others.

Congratulate yourself – don’t be afraid to tell yourself how great you are. Absorb yourself in the moment – block out the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the

moment. Be mindful – by focusing your attention on the present moment. Try not to form habits – neurons are wired to respond to novel

events. Involve yourself in a variety of experiences and spread pleasurable events out over time.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

THE FOUR R’s OF EDUCATION Traditionally there have been three R’s in education; reading, writing and ‘rithmetic. While I am sure that many people would agree these are extremely important, in fact essential to a great education, there is one R that is equally important and yet often not referred to; relationships. School is about preparing young people for an enriching and active life. This life comes from being part of and contributing to a community; whether that is the classroom community, school community or the wider community. Relationships are the ‘glue’ that bond us together, give us a sense of identity and provide us support and encouragement. While for many students forming friendships (relationships) comes naturally, for others it is equally as difficult. If they feel good about themselves and have positive relationships, research shows that it increases their ‘school connectedness’ and makes them feel better and more engaged at school. This can then result in better learning outcomes. Relationships can have a powerful effect on student happiness, well-being and learning outcomes. Another related ‘R’ word often mentioned these days is resilience; how people can cope with or bounce back from difficult life events or circumstances. Research suggests that for young people, this ‘R’ also depends on relationships, because an ongoing, strong relationship with school, friends and significant adults can increase resilience.

Page 3: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 7th September 2012

Teaching about relationships is a valid part of the curriculum, and honing skills in such an area, are an important determinant of success in life. That is why at St Joseph’s Regional College we utilise the Peer Support program, focus on building a House spirit, work together on many Social Justice Programs, and facilitate many Year group activities/excursions and PC Days which focus on developing positive relationships.

Year Twelve students would certainly agree that the relationship fostered and developed by their teachers has been a wonderful support and source of strength as they journeyed their high school years. I take this opportunity to thank all staff for the extra work they do to enhance the educational experience for all our students. Some examples of the extra efforts recently are the Tournament of the Minds, Netball, Touch Football, Volleyball, Athletics, Boys’ Education Footy Trip, Blood Donations, Career advice, Deadly Days, PC Touch, Sport awards, Band trip to Bellingen, HSC Drama, Music and Art preparations and performances, Maths support at lunch times, Rugby awards, French excursion planning, Homework Hub for Seniors, Theatre Bites, Boys Choir, Dance groups, guest speakers in the Library, Dramarama, planning for Year 8 camp, classroom revision out of hours……. Just to name a few!

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

Last Saturday twelve students represented the College in the Tournament of Minds held at Westport High School. This year the College had a team competing in the Social Science section and a team competing in the Language Literature section of the competition. The students performed very well under difficult circumstances, both teams performed on tournament day with one team member down. True champions know that ‘the show must go on’ and the students below certainly lived up to this. All students did a wonderful job writing scripts, learning lines and making costumes and props. From all accounts they did very well in the Spontaneous Challenge which was cited for the first time on tournament day and could not be watched by the audience. We look forward to an even stronger squad next year; the experience gained this year will certainly benefit the students in 2013. Language Literature : Caine Wilkins, Naomi Langley, Emily Sheridan, Rebecca Lakis, Damien Hudson and Courtney Newell. Social Science : Chris Treeves, Emily Nardella, Jessica Rogers, Holly Fyffe, Paige Dyson and Shonia Poole. Janine Handley Learning Enrichment Coordinator.

2013 LANGUAGE IMMERSION AND CULTURAL TOUR TO NEW CALEDONIA

Plans are underway with regards to a possible study tour for 2013 French students to New Caledonia during the first week of the Term Three school holidays. French students in Year 9-11, 2013 are invited to participate. An information evening for students and their parents, or caregivers, will be held on Wednesday, 12th September, 2012 from 5:30 to 6:00pm in the St Joseph’s Regional College PAC. Information will be available at this time regarding a draft itinerary, approximate costs (depending upon student numbers and inclusions) and payment plan details. The study tour will be booked with G.E.T. Educational Tours and will be led under the supervision of teachers. Travel insurance will be included. We hope a great group of students will join us in exploring the sights and sounds of New Caledonia, and to experience an immersion in the French language and culture. We look forward to seeing you at the information night on Wednesday, 12th September, 2012.

DIOCESAN NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Last week three teams travelled to Casino for the Diocesan Netball Championship. I am very proud to say that the College was represented by competitive and professional sportswomen on this day. Year 7/8 team won all their pool games to become finalists. They played an amazing game in the final, with scouts from Queensland Netball looking on, but were defeated in the end by Trinity College, Lismore. They came in 2nd overall. Year 9/10 team played strong competitive netball all day but unfortunately missed out on a spot in the finals. Year 11/12 team won all but one of their pool games but were defeated by Tweed Heads in the semi-final to come 3rd overall. All girls displayed exemplary behaviour, manners and sportswomanship at both of these championships and I would like to thank all the girls for making the trips so worthwhile. Thank you to the coaching team: Donna Hamlin, Eloise Bentley and Leanne Tinsey for your weeks of coaching and organising and the two overnight trips away. Jo Hall Netball Coach
