MESSAGE FROM BISHOP GEOFFREY JARRETT

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. 12:4-7

There are different kinds of gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, and we can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do. The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others.

Ash Wednesday Liturgy This week the College community gathered to mark the beginning of our Lenten journey to Easter. Our liturgy was most ably led by Mrs Gilbert’s Year 10 CSYMA class, our Youth Ministry Officer, Jordan Hodge, and our Year 12 Leadership Team. It was simply fantastic witnessing our students lead the liturgy. Giving students “a voice” at St Joseph’s Regional College is a key part of their formation as young adults; for they are the best role models in proclaiming their faith to their peers. I commend to you the opening words spoken at the liturgy by Fletcher Aldous, Maxwell Carter and Lachlan Ross

Fletcher: Ash Wednesday is a reminder of the imperfection of our world, this day and the forty days of lent to come, allow us to reflect on the things we have done wrong, and to pray for those that have been hurt by the sins of others. This time is an invite to think just how much we need God in our lives and to thank him for his unending grace and forgiveness. Max: But Ash Wednesday also signifies hope. The ashes that are placed on our foreheads form the shape of a cross to symbolise our failures and sins. However, this cross is also a hint, that through Jesus we will be set free from the power of sin and welcomed into the fullness of life. Lachie: Throughout Lent we commit to living like Jesus. Through prayer we are able to draw closer to God and fulfil our promise as Christians to live justly as Jesus taught us. Fasting from things we enjoy allows us to empathise with those who have no choice in missing out on these things. Giving to the poor is another way in which we can show our commitment to justice and equality and also to give thanks for all that God has given us.

Thank you to our Senior College Leaders Olivia Bentley, Jayden Hunter, Eleanor Wright, Chace Anderson, Corben Rees, Claire Rocuet, Kimberley Ross, Christopher Treeves, Hannah Vogel, Mitchell Williams and also Karla Martin and Christa Morrow who stood in for absent students. These leaders placed ashes upon the foreheads of students and staff to signify our belief that God can bring hope where there is despair, love where there is hatred and light where there is darkness. On behalf of the College community, I would like to thank our students who were so attentive, respectful and engaged with the Ash Wednesday Liturgy.

Inaugural Mass I would like to invite you (Parents and Families) to join staff and students at our Inaugural Mass on Wednesday, 25th February in our College hall at 9.30am. New Student Morning Tea A morning tea was held for students in Years 8 and 9 on Wednesday and for students in 10, 11 & 12 on Thursday to welcome them to our school community. The morning tea was a wonderful opportunity for new students to meet each other and to share their experiences at the College. Thank you to Mrs Carol Avery for preparing the morning tea.

YEAR 7 PARENT-TEACHER MEET AND GREET EVENING Next Monday, 23rd February the College will be holding the annual Year 7 Parent-Teacher Meet and Greet Evening from 4.00pm – 7.00pm. This night provides parents the opportunity to have a five minute meeting with each of their child's teachers, as well as have a BBQ dinner with other staff and parents. Students are encouraged to attend the evening with their parents.

A separate note has been sent home outlining how to book interviews with each of your child's teachers.

The Parent Consultative Committee is a vehicle for affirming, supporting and validating ideas, policies and initiatives. NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF ADMINISTRATION IMMUNISATION CLINICS FOR 2015. A Parent Information Kit has been sent home with students. The kit contains information about the vaccine and the disease that it protects against as well as a consent form. North Coast Area Health Service is holding Immunisation Days at St Joseph’s Regional College, dates are as follows: TERM 1 March 2015 (DATE IS NOW TO BE ADVISED) Year 7 HPV – dose 1 all students (3 dose course)

Boostrix – all students (1 dose only) YEAR 11 & 12 MMR signed consent forms to be brought back in term 1, they will be check to see if the vaccine is required. A list of the students who require the vaccine will be emailed to you before the clinic in term 2. TERM 2 20TH May Year 7 HPV – dose 2 all students – catch-up dose 1 for students that missed the clinic in term 1

Varciella (chicken pox) – all students (1 dose only) Boostrix – students that missed the clinic in term 1

Year 11 & 12 MMR – 1 dose if required TERM 4 8th October 2015 Year 7 HPV – dose 3 all students - dose 1 or 2 for students that missed the clinics in term 1 & 2

Please understand that if you do not have your child immunised in the Year (eg. Year 7 - 9) that is offered by North Coast Public Area Health, you can then access this vaccine at a later stage at your General Practitioner. The cost of the vaccine however will not be covered by this program. Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by collecting the form from the College office. FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION St Joseph’s Regional College will be providing the musicians, readers and other parts of the mass on Sunday, 1st March. We would love to see a great representation of students and family members join us in this celebration. Project Compassion Project Compassion is very much a part of our college Lenten journey. This year the theme of Project Compassion is “Food for Life”. As we begin this time of Lent, let us be mindful that this is our opportunity, in the words of Pope Francis, “to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being.

* Together we can help to ensure that children, women and men share in the fruits of the earth.

Project Compassion provides us with a simple and easy way to combat poverty in some of the poorest areas of the world. This year we encourage each PC to decide on a goal to strive for, whether it be buying chickens for a village in Fiji or allowing clean running water in Nepal.

Remember, Project Compassion isn’t just a fundraiser, it is an invite to show compassion throughout every aspect of life and in every corner of our world. The most simple of actions can change the world, showing love and compassion is one of the most effective ways.

NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF HSIE Year 7 History Club has returned on Wednesdays The History Club is an extra-curricular activity offered to Year 7 students who would like to learn more about history and get involved in making historical models. Our current project is painting and making a 1/32 scale Roman Bireme ship with 63 crewmen and over 600 parts. (see picture). It is free to join the History club, all paint, brushes and models are provided. Students will be taught the various skills to make models – all you need is patience and a way home. History Club is after school on Wednesdays from 3.30pm until 5.00pm, students must make sure that they can make it home after this time. Students do not have to commit to every Wednesday; please let Mr West know if you will not be there. Why not come along and see what it is like. No problems if you decide it is not for you. The SAPSS Concert Band is beginning next Thursday 26th Feb at MacKillop College (St Paul's). The "Music Bus" will leave the bus bay at 3.20 pm. The rehearsal finishes at 5.00pm

The Guitar Ensemble has commenced on Mondays in the PAC. If anybody would like to join this group, please listen to the morning notices on Monday to find out what period it is on next week. A College guitar can be used for the Ensemble.

OnStage Excursion

Last Thursday our Year 11 and 12 Drama students, along with a few lucky Year 10’s, travelled to Sydney to witness exemplary 2014 Higher School Certificate (HSC) Drama students perform at the Seymour Centre OnSTAGE showcase. Students also were able to see Writers OnSTAGE with readings of HSC drama student scripts by professional actors, Writers OnSCREEN with three video dramas and an exhibition of individual projects by HSC Drama students including costume and set design, Director’s folios, program designs and theatre reviews.

While there we were also fortunate enough to see Jackson Dowling (ex SJRC student who attended The Scots College for his senior studies) perform his HSC monologue from ‘The Cake Man’ as well as get some ‘hot tips’ for HSC Drama success from Jackson himself after the performance.

Our students left inspired by the exemplary works and we look forward to seeing this inspiration translate into their own classroom practice in their study of Drama.

LIBRARY NEWS Library Lovers’ Day This week we celebrated Library Lovers’ Day, where eager borrowers went into the draw to win a special prize. Library Lovers’ Day is celebrated the world over on Valentine’s Day, and our lucky reader this year was Christopher Sakayan in Year 7. Congratulations Christopher. Library involvement in classes The last two weeks has seen significant Library involvement in HSC and Preliminary English classes, Years 8 and 10 Science, and English classes across the 7-10 curriculum. Students are learning about researching, referencing and bibliographies, and finding appropriate and relevant texts to complement their senior English studies. 2014 Overdues This week, the office will start billing students for books overdue from 2014. If you find a billed resource, please send it in with a copy of your receipt so that a refund can be arranged. Thank you all for your cooperation in this matter. Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. The Library is a great place for students to complete class work and assessment tasks. All Library resources are available for use during this time. The hours are: Monday and Wednesday 3.15pm - 4.30pm

The Homework Hub is for people who are "getting things done".

Just a reminder, that the homework hub is only for homework or study. The homework hub is not a place for students to socialise, wait for buses or play with iPads. Students not involved in productive school work will be asked to leave the homework hub.

CHANGES TO TAX FILE NUMBER APPLICATION PROCEDURE The Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program has not continued beyond 31st December 2014. This means that the College will no longer be able to process applications. The new application method is outlined below. How students can apply for a TFN from 1 January 2015: Students apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC27248' Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the application form Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC22604' If you require any further information you can phone The ATO on 1300 130 282 between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

ST AGNES’ PARISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ YEAR BOOK The St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools Yearbook is a wonderful record of the year that has passed and great to have as a reference well beyond one’s school years. Families who had a son or daughter in Year 12, 2014 are asked to call into the office to collect their year book please. Students in Years 8 have already received their copy. Year books can be purchased through the College office for just $20.00.

PARENT ASSEMBLY NEWS – TERM1 Dear parents, we do hope that all children have settled into their new year well and there are many smiles. We would like to invite you all to our Family Retreat which is happening on the 28/29th March at Grassy head. Positive parent participation! If you want the best outcomes for your child or young person then it’s important that you become involved in as many aspects of your child’s education as practical. The involvement of parents helps break down the mystique about school that can exist for some children. Their chances of success are better when they see school as an extension of home rather than merely an institution for learning. Taking part in school activities is one valuable way of participating in your children’s learning. But, participating as a parent can be much broader than helping out in the classroom. There is a range of simple things you can do at home that will assist teachers to maximise the learning of your child. These include: talking with your child about their day, hearing young learners read, helping with homework and making sure kids go off to school happy, healthy and having had plenty of sleep. Here are some more ideas to help you participate in your child’s education in positive ways:

• Find out what your school is trying to achieve for your child and show your support for its aims. Discover what sets your child’s school apart from others. • Support a broad, balanced curriculum that offers children a variety of educational experiences rather than a program that focuses narrowly on the traditional 3 R’s. • Direct conversations through the correct channels such as your child’s teacher, the principal or the school’s governing body. Gossip or thoughtless criticism within the general community can easily tarnish a school’s reputation. • Become an advocate for your child’s school and promote its positive features throughout the wider community. Encourage your child to take pride in their school through your example. • Attend school activities such as open days, concerts, sports events and celebrations. Invite other members of the community along as well. • Consult with your child’s teacher about practical ways that you can assist both at home and at school. SJRC SWIMMING SQUAD ANNOUNCED

Congratulations to all the students listed on the spreadsheet at the link below. They have been selected in the SJRC Swimming Squad to compete in Kempsey on the 11th March (Wednesday Week 7). A permission form will be emailed home to parents by the end of week 4.

We are allowed to enter two teams into the competition. This is a squad of 27 which will be narrowed to 19 next week. The next training will be Tuesday, 24th February at lunch time. Squad members are expected to attend all trainings or may risk being replaced by a shadow player.

School’s cup competition is on Wednesday, 25th March (week 9). Please let us know asap if you are not available for this event. Laura Gilbert & Donna Hamlin Coaches Student Success Congratulations to Hugh Stewart and Adam Sherrett on their sporting achievements. It’s a fantastic opportunity for both boys and we wish them every success.

Hugh Stewart has recently been selected as the male recipient for the Junior Lifesaver of the Year Award for the Mid North Coast in Surf Life Saving. He is a member of the Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf club. To become Junior Lifesaver of the Year Hugh had to sit through a series of interviews in front of a panel of judges. He will now be flown to Sydney where he will attend a camp and meet the other Branch Representatives. At this camp the NSW State finalist will be selected.

Adam Sherratt has been asked to join the U13’s Emerging Jets (soccer) in Newcastle. He will start training with the team on Fridays.
