REFLECT

Many people in our world are hungry and thirsty. This hunger

and thirst go well beyond physical needs for food, security, and

shelter. Many are emotionally and spiritually parched, too. Behind every act of violence is a soul who hungers. People live

with relationships that actually starve them. They are abused,

exploited, disrespected, laughed at, and marginalized. There is a

lot of confusion and inner pain that needs to be acknowledged and expressed. We all long to be understood and loved, even

when our inner demons or who I am make it difficult to be. Do

you live with inner confusion and pain? Folks often wander

through life without any real direction or purpose and take their cues from what seems satisfying or popular at the moment. The

deeper dots of our lives can easily remain unconnected, and we

can find ourselves without grounding, purpose, or real happiness.

Life becomes shallow and without real purpose as we hunger and thirst for an ultimate love.

It’s easier to see the physical hungers and thirsts. We try to

respond to these as best we can. Much more needs to be done. With all that God’s earth can provide, nobody ought to face

sleep at night with a belly that’s empty. It’s sinful. It’s unjust.

But isn’t all hunger unjust? It doesn’t need to be, and it should

not be. Just as no one ought to be physically hungry and thirsty, there is really no need to be emotionally or spiritually deficient

either. If we have more privileges at our fingertips, it is easier to

try to satisfy our emotional and spiritual hungers and thirst by

acting on impulse or self-indulgence, carelessly following passions,

or by seeking self-destructive ways to dull the ache of emptiness.

Folks need to know where to look for nourishment and need the

right friends to help them find it. We may not think that we have enough to respond to and to satisfy all of the needs, but we do.

It doesn’t take much. Five loaves and two fish provided for a

huge crowd. With God, all things are possible. Our faith provides

the direction for where God’s children must go to find the nourishment they seek. It also tells us how to structure life so

that justice and equity can be a reality for all. It also tells us how

to respond to pain, sinfulness, and confusion. Come to the water

and then help another get there.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION

Religious Education Registration for the School Year 2020-21

is still underway.

We are asking all students who plan to attend our program in

the Fall to please register. We are making decisions on class

size due to the directives from the State of Connecticut and

the Archdiocese of Hartford. It is important to know how

many students will be in each class, as there will be a cap

imposed due to these directives.

Please contact the Religious Education Office at 860-973-1717

ext. 118 to register your students. If you have any questions,

please call Pat Keck, Coordinator of Religious Education, at

860-973-1717 ext. 117.

MASS INTENTIONS The 2021 Mass Book will be available the day after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 8th for the scheduling of Mass Intentions. Please stop by the rectory at Holy Family Church, the rectory at St. Bernard Church, or call 860-973-1717 to schedule a Mass.

A reminder that you may schedule up to six Masses for the year but only one weekend Mass per parishioner, please.

ST. JEANNE JUGAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM COULD USE YOUR HELP!

We are looking for volunteers to help with the Religious Education Program on Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings to assist as office staff, hall monitors and sidewalk crossing guards at St. Bernard School on Pearl Street.

If you have some time to donate to the program, please call Pat Keck, Coordinator of Religious Education, at 860-973-1717 ext. 117. Thank you for your time and dedication to the youth of our Parish!

2020 CONNECTICUT CATHOLIC MEN’S CONFERENCE: TAKING IT TO HIGHER GROUND

The worldwide Covid-19 pandemic took a heavy toll on humanity with the deaths and the lockdowns, and the many changes that social distancing and fears about the spread of the disease brought. For people of faith, this crisis brought new ways of worshipping through social media as churches were closed down.

For the men of the Connecticut Catholic Men’s Conference Committee, it seemed as though the pandemic would dash all hopes of a gathering this year. But thanks to the fortitude and ingenuity of these faithful servants, the conference is being taken to higher ground – literally – as the committee gave birth to the idea of a new kind of conference, one that would call men up to the mountain under the shadow of the 56-foot cross at Holy Land USA in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Against the odds, the CCMC Committee, headed by Ken Santopietro, secured the 17-acre site and two large tents, raised an army of workers to prepare the ground for an open-air event, and harvested the talents of the committee members themselves as speakers. Each meeting the committee held opened up new possibilities for making this event the best it has ever been. The theme, the focus, the goals, and a new date began to coalesce around those symbols and strengths that make Catholic men great, and with a lot of grace, this 13th conference, which is now scheduled for September 19th, 2020 (assuring warmer weather), has come together in ways none of the men of the committee could have dreamed of a year ago.

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Saint Joseph being proclaimed the Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1870, this year’s theme is SAINT JOSEPH: OUR PATRON. In addition, the Mass this year will be ded-icated to the soon-to-be blessed Father Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus, who grew up in the shadow of Holy Land, the brainchild of another outstanding Catholic man, John Baptist Greco, who turned a piece of unde-sirable land into a place where believers could celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

The event will be doubly blessed because of the dedication of so many from the Knights of Columbus who are preparing the site and who represent what it means to be a man dedicated to the Catholic faith. Father Jeffrey Romans, former priest-secretary for the Archbishop of Hartford and a former CCMC Committee member, will be the principal celebrant at the outdoor Mass.

The speakers for the event include: Father James Sullivan, the current conference chaplain, who will speak on the life of Father McGivney; David Craig, founder of Adoration for Vocations; Aaron Joseph, conference co-director, and founder of SAINT JOSEPH: OUR PATRON, a lay apostolate founded to promote Saint Joseph’s universal patronage; and Walter Finneran, who will be giving a testimony on The Brian O’Connell Homeless Project. These men will be tying together the theme of the day in a way that will drive home the overarching goal of every conference: to connect Catholic men to Christ and one another, and prompt each man to seek out a personal apostolate where he can serve the Kingdom of God and help other Catholic men to become the best of who they can be.

There will be all the familiar elements the men have come to expect from the conference: great speakers, Mass, Adoration, Confession, fellowship, and an uplifting message of encouragement for the men. This event will truly reach new levels for those who will participate. There will be a limit of 500 men for this conference, and the CCMC Committee is asking those who wish to attend to purchase their tickets before September 1st by going to www.ctcatholicmen.org. We hope to see you there!

A MESSAGE FROM DEACON RICHARD

Dear parishioners of St. Jeanne Jugan Parish,

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to inform you that Camille and I will soon be relocating to be closer to our children and grandchildren. This will be a big change for us, but we feel God is telling us it is the right decision. We anticipate leaving in early Fall.

It is not easy to leave the St. Jeanne Jugan community. Love and gratitude is the theme of the message that I want to leave with you. Everyone has been very supportive of my ministry. Our parish is a very vibrant and gifted community and I am grateful the Lord gave me the opportunity to serve here. I wish to thank Fr. Golas, Fr. Mathew, Deacon Vince and all of you truly loving and devoted parishioners that made my stay here so enjoyable and rewarding.

As my journey takes another path, I bring with me God’s blessing that has come through all of you. I give thanks for you and be assured that you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Please accept my gratitude for the love this parish has shown to me and my wife.

DAILY MASS READINGS

At St. Bernard Church, there are no

intentions noted this week for the

chapel or sanctuary candles.

Contact the St. Bernard Church office

for information about having the

chapel or sanctuary candles burn for your intention.

DO NOT BE AFRAID

The call of the Lord Jesus to serve him in the Holy Priesthood arises directly from the love of his Sacred Heart. He is still calling many more men today to leave their worldly desires and ambitions behind and set out on the great adventure of the Catholic Priesthood, to dedicate their lives to the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

A call to the priesthood usually begins with some attraction to priestly life and ministry, a call to give oneself to God in a deeper, more radical way. From there through prayer and participation in the Church's sacramental life, one usually is led to greater trust in beginning to take the first steps of answering God's call. If you think God may be calling you, do not be afraid!

The Lord God promised to send shepherds for his Church. Today, the people of God need good and holy priests who will proclaim the Gospel and celebrate the Sacraments for our world. If God is calling you, be courageous in answering, knowing that with St. Paul "we can do all things in him who strengthens us" (cf Phil 4:14).

If you would like to discuss your calling, contact Fr. Michael Casey, Director of Vocations, Pastoral Center, at 860-761-7456, by e-mailing [email protected], or by visiting the web at www.hartfordpriest.com.

Rest in peace

WEEKEND MASSES IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD As of Saturday, July 4, 2020, parishes were able to reopen for the public celebration of weekend Masses, provided that no more than a total of 100 socially distanced persons are present at a given Mass in keeping with the limitation currently set by the State of Connecticut. All previously set requirements for weekday Masses will still be observed during weekend Masses. This includes the wearing of masks while in church and the limitation on singing, which may be done by a cantor but will not include participation by the congregation.

In an effort to maintain no more than 100 people at each Mass, you will need to call the rectory during office hours to register for Mass.

Holy Family Church office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm and St. Bernard Church office hours are Monday through Thursday from

9 am to 3 pm and Fridays from 9 am to noon.

The dispensation from the Sunday obligation granted to all Catholics of the Archdiocese of Hartford by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair has been extended through Sunday, September 6. The elderly, the sick, those who care for someone who is vulnerable, or those who are fearful or anxious are encouraged not to attend or feel obligated to attend at this time.

Live-streamed Masses, both daily and weekend, will continue on our website (sjjenfield.org) so that those who cannot attend will be able to participate and remain connected with the parish.

If you decide to attend Mass, please be charitable by protecting others and yourself. Please read and follow the guidelines below.

• If you or someone in your household is ill, especially with fever or flu-like symptoms or conjunctivitis, please do not enter the church.

• At all times, including entering and exiting the church, practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet from people who do not live in your household.

• You must wear a face mask or cloth face covering. The proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth.

• Do not shake hands with others.

• Use hand sanitizers.

• Do not congregate to socialize before or after Mass.

AS WE WELCOME YOU BACK AND RESUME PUBLIC LITURGIES TOGETHER, PLEASE TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO STAY SAFE.

NEW MASS SCHEDULE The new Mass schedule will be in effect beginning Labor Day weekend,

September 5th/6th and will be as follows:

With the reopening of the Churches for Sunday Masses, we appreciate the cooperation of those attending. Please continue to register for weekend Mass to keep the proper limit of

100, observe the six foot distance from others by following the floor markings, use hand sanitizer, and wear masks to help keep us all safe.

Please remember that the proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth.
