18th Sunday in Ordinary

Time August 2, 2020

A Word from your Pastor Today’s word is about the invitation that God gives us. It is an invitation to be satisfied in our thirst and hunger. It is an invitation to be come without cost. The miracle of the feeding of the five thousand brings the prophecy of Isaiah to life for the people gathered in that deserted place because something about Jesus drew them to Him. Jesus again captures the moment and challenges His disciples to respond to the hunger that day. They had to trust that some how God would once again feed His people. Through Jesus, God fed them in abundance with leftovers. These months have put us all in a position to ask what will satisfy us? What is most important to sustain us in mind and body? We, like the Apostles, have to see with bigger eyes, eyes of great faith. We also have to see what is in our midst. Many times there are people who can bring forth what seem to be small gifts that with faith and confidence can be multiplied with our help. I had/have the honor and joy of presenting two of our seminarians to the bishop this week. Brennan for the Order of Candidacy and Michael to the Order of Deacon. Over these years I have been charged with helping them see how God works with their gifts. A big part of that is the affirmation of the people that surround them. The image on the cover captures a moment that isn’t detailed in Matthew’s account of the story. Andrew finds this boy with five loaves and two fish. Something tells Him that Jesus can use these gifts, he just has to put the boy in front of Jesus. Brennan and Michael have and do spend time in front of Jesus and ask Him what He can do with what they bring. Also as alums of St Andrew’s Hall at Seton Hall, they join me in the belief that ministry as a priest is much about placing others in front of Jesus. Congratulations Brennan & Michael! Let’s continue to pray for them and all of our seminarians! “The hand of the Lord feeds us, He answers all our needs” - Fr. Carroll

Your dedication to your parish has been amazing! It has been great to see those of you back in the pews that can be. We are mindful

of the many who join us via livestream on Sunday morning and those who we hear from

and reach out to during the week.

Amidst challenging times, your faith and your need to have St. Elizabeth at the center

is a great witness. Thank you!

It has been great to see you at mass. After these weeks it is important to remind those of you that come to mass that 6 feet between you and other people is 2 pews between you. Let us also slow down again for communion. Let’s keep the distance between one another - look at the gold dots on the pews and restrain yourself from getting up and moving as soon as communion begins. The more gradual the procession forward the better.

St. Elizabeth Devotion - Tomorrow Night -

Every month we have our St. Elizabeth Devotion. It is a time to gather in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, to encounter the Word, Benediction, and the St. Elizabeth Prayer, Litany and Hymn. We cele-brate this devotion to honor our patroness, to learn from her story and to strengthen us to be a commu-nity that stands up for life as Elizabeth did.

Join us the first Monday of each month at 6:30 PM.

There is a Blessing of the Child in the Womb at the conclusion. If you have received the good news that you are pregnant, come for the blessing.

Pray that those called to help Christ feed the multitude will not be held back by what they see as their limitations, but will rely on Jesus who will feed those to whom they are sent as priests, deacon, sisters and brothers. If you think God is calling you to be a priest, deacon, religious brother or sister, contact Fr. Carroll. 302-573-3113, www.cdow.org/vocations

Vocation Reflection

The sacrament of reconciliation will be offered on Saturday morning after the 8:30am mass and not at 4:00pm for the time being so that we can reduce the gathering of people before mass. The anointing of the sick may be requested after mass if you are preparing for surgery. “Last Rites” can always be requested at home or at the hospital but me aware the hospital may require an in house chaplain to do so. As we move forward slowly and cautiously, funerals will be celebrated with the same restrictions as Sunday Mass and mindful to reduce gathering and the time in the church. For this reason the Rite outside of mass can be used in Church. We can not offer visitations in the Church, eulogies or the participation of family members in the procession, readings, etc. Weddings - Call for scheduling and PreCana. Couples should contact the parish at least 1 year in advance. Marriages can be celebrated with the same restrictions of the current Sunday Masses. Baptisms - Baptisms can be celebrated but we will limit the celebration to one child (family). We will offer additional Saturday/Sunday options. Discuss dates with Lisa in the parish office when you are ready.

Recreation refreshes our bodies and souls. During these Covid-19 days, however, vacations, sports, and parties have to be rethought. Try enjoying cribbage or a board game.

Marriage Moments

Perhaps you have air conditioning, but not everyone does. Invite your child to help you offer a cool drink to someone who needs it. Recently I saw a cooler in front of a house with a sign, "Free bottles of water to anyone who wants one."

The Sacrament of Confirmation - We will soon be

making plans for our Confirmation Preparation

program. If you are in the 8th grade or above and would like to participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation, please call the parish office to receive the

registration information. We will be redesigning the prep to

adhere to COVID 19 guidelines. We will celebrate Confirmation on Saturday, December 5 at the 5pm Mass. This year Bishop Malooly has designated Fr. Carroll, as pastor, to confer the Sacrament. If you are an adult who has not made your confirmation, talk to Fr Carroll or Deacon Ken about receiving the Sacrament that day as well.

Family Connection In our family life we can sometimes hear echoes of the disciples' excuses: “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Sometimes this echo is heard from children squabbling about the last piece of cake. Sometimes it is heard in our concern about the limits of the family's income or possessions. Sometimes this echo is heard in our complaints about the seemingly endless demands for our time and attention. Jesus understood these feelings and taught us to see beyond our limitations. Jesus modeled for us a compassion that reaches out to others, even when we would rather withdraw into ourselves. Jesus taught us that God blesses compassion offered to others with his grace. Today's Gospel reminds us that with God there is not only enough, there is an abundance!

Talk together about some of the stresses and demands for time and attention that your family members might feel. Acknowledge that we sometimes have to make difficult choices about how to use our time, talents, and treasure. Then read together today's Gospel, Matthew 14:13-21. Notice how much Jesus cared for the crowds, healing the sick even though he wanted to withdraw to a quiet place. Notice how the disciples re-sponded to Jesus' instruction to feed the crowd; they noted their limited supply of food. Jesus blessed this limited supply of food, and it was enough to feed the entire crowd, more than 5,000 people, and there were leftovers! Pray together that Jesus will grant us compassion like his so that we will offer whatever we have to others with compassion and generosity. Pray together today's Psalm, Psalm 145, or the Lord's Prayer.

This Sunday’s Readings First Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3

The Lord will renew his covenant with the de-

scendants of David.

Second Reading: Romans 8:35,37-39

Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:13-21

Jesus feeds the crowd with five loaves and two

fish.
