What a season we’ve got planned for you with exciting and diverse programming in 2014-2015! With beautifully renovated venues, internationally renowned artists, and musical offerings from chamber and classical to Latin and swinging jazz, we invite you to peruse this brochure and then join us for some wonderful music making.

something neW. to celebrate our inaugural year hosting concerts and recitals in Fairchild theatre, the College of music presents our first showcase series concert of the season—Fairchild Fanfare—on september 13. Part of the msU Federal Credit Union showcase series, this fast-paced montage features representative ensembles and individuals who now make their “musical home” in the acoustically superb Fairchild theatre: choral, jazz, solo faculty artists, West Circle series, Cello Plus, musique 21, and opera.

also included in our season are some familiar favorites: two fully staged operas, holiday shows, a piano monster concert, our annual Joanne and Bill Church West Circle series, the 15th annual Cello Plus Chamber music Festival, sponsored this year by selma and the late stanley hollander, and a spectacular jazz series, along with many concerts featuring orchestral, wind, percussion, and choral ensembles.

The Orchid EnsembleMusique 21March 3 • Fairchild Theatre

Established in 1997, the JUNO Award-nominated Orchid

Ensemble is Lan Tung on the erhu/Chinese violin, Yu-Chen Wang on the zheng/Chinese zither, and Jonathan Bernard on percussion. The ensemble, which blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, has been tirelessly developing an innovative musical genre based on the cultural exchange between Western and Asian musicians.

Michael Sachs, with the Cleveland Orchestra since 1988, is recognized internationally as a

leading soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, author, and clinician. He is frequently featured as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, and has been guest soloist with numerous orchestras and chamber groups. He also serves as head of the trumpet department at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Christian McBride, jazz bassMSUFCU Jazz Artist in ResidenceOctober 9-October 13

Grammy winner Christian McBride has played with hundreds of artists, from

McCoy Tyner and Diana Krall to Sting. He has served as artistic director at Jazz Aspen Snowmass summer program and the Dave Brubeck Institute, and was co-director of the Jazz Museum in Harlem. His recordings include The Philadelphia Experiment, Vertical Vision, Live at Tonic, and his latest release Out Here.

Marcello Cormio has appeared around the U.S. and Europe, with

the San Antonio Symphony, Sarasota Opera, the Orchestra della Società dei Concerti di Bari, the Bacau Symphony, the Bay View Festival, and the orchestras of Indiana University School of Music. He recently performed at the head of the University of Kentucky Symphony in concert halls in Hangzhou, Tianjin, and at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing.

Robin Eubanks, an eminent musician, composer, performer,

and educator (professor of jazz trombone at the Oberlin College Conservatory), has performed with many notable artists including Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Eddie Palmieri, Sun Ra, Barbra Streisand, The Rolling Stones, and Talking Heads. He has won Grammy Awards for his performances on Michael Brecker’s Wide Angles and Dave Holland’s What Goes Around.

Robert Beaser has emerged as one of the most accomplished creative musicians

of his generation. Since 1982, when the New York Times wrote that he possessed a “lyrical gift comparable to that of the late Samuel Barber,” his music has won international acclaim for its balance between dramatic sweep and architectural clarity.

Daniel Beckwith has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera, the Glyndebourne Festival, Grand

Theâtre du Genève, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Seattle Opera, among others. He has accompanied such artists as Renée Fleming, Marilyn Horne, and Frederica von Stade, and will join faculty artist Melanie Helton in a recital in January at Fairchild Theatre.

Ruggero Allifranchini, associate concertmaster of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra,

studied at the New School in Philadelphia and at the Curtis Institute of Music. He cofounded the Borromeo String Quartet, with which he played exclusively for 11 years. Over the past few seasons he has played as guest concertmaster with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Minnesota Orchestra.

Stephen Prutsman has served as artistic partner with the St. Paul

Chamber Orchestra, where he conducted concertos from the keyboard, performed in chamber ensembles, and wrote several new works for the orchestra. More recently, he was the artistic director of the Cartagena International Festival of Music. He was a medal winner at the Tchaikovsky and Queen Elisabeth Piano competitions, and received the Avery Fisher Career Grant.

MSU JAzz EnSEMBlES in the College of music include three big bands:

Jazz Orchestra I, Jazz Orchestra II, and Jazz Orchestra III, each made up of 18

members, and conducted by rodney Whitaker, etienne Charles and michael Dease,

respectively. the groups play the repertoire of the great jazz masters as well as a

wide range of soul, swing, blues, and gospel. the four Jazz Octets are eight-piece

ensembles that blend the sounds of big band with small group performance. there

are also 12 Jazz Combos, each consisting of four to six members.

ORCHESTRAS

MSU ORChESTRAS the Symphony Orchestra, directed by kevin noe, is comprised

of some of the most advanced string, wind, brass, and percussion musicians in the

College of music. it maintains an intense schedule of six orchestral performances

and two full opera productions each season. the repertoire chosen is often

advanced, and draws from both the well-established orchestral canon and new

works by living composers. Participation in the symphony orchestra is by audition

only. the Concert Orchestra, which is open to students, staff, and faculty from all

corners of the university regardless of major, presents four concerts per year and

is designed to be a community-building artistic experience for all involved.

MUSIqUE 21 is a project-based group with flexible instrumentation focusing on

new works. Utilizing a variety of media including theatre, film, and movement, this

troupe pushes the envelope of what a 21st-century performance can be. Creating

a new performance style that can only be called a “theatre of music,” it is

enthusiastically celebrated by audiences and critics alike.

bANdSMSU BAnDS perform the full spectrum of wind

repertoire including chamber music. the Wind Symphony is comprised of graduate and upper-division undergraduate students

and performs works that require as few as six players as well as the full 55-member

ensemble. Conducted by kevin sedatole, the group presents six concerts during

the academic year with additional national performances. the Symphony Band

consists of upper division undergraduate music majors. Conducted by John

madden, this ensemble maintains an active performance schedule. Concert Band

consists of undergraduate music majors and non-majors. this ensemble presents

four concerts during the academic year and is conducted by Cormac Cannon.

Campus Band provides playing opportunities for non-music majors campus wide

and gives two concerts per semester.

CHOIRSMSU’S ChORAl EnSEMBlES perform secular and sacred music in all styles and

genres representing many eras and cultures. David rayl directs the University Chorale, which is comprised of the best graduate and upper-level undergraduate

singers in the College of music. State Singers, directed by Jonathan reed, includes

music majors and non-music majors and is recognized as the oldest singing

organization on the msU campus. Women’s Chamber Ensemble, led by sandra

snow, focuses on more contemporary repertoire. Men’s Glee Club and Women’s Glee Club are popular ensembles performing in the glee tradition. a mixed choir of

mostly undergraduate singers, Campus Choir performs a wide variety of music from

cultures around the world. the Chamber Choir performs music from a range of

stylistic periods. Choral Union, a large mixed chorus from the community, focuses

Wharton Center Children Policy

infants and newborns are not permitted at Wharton Center events. everyone attending must

have a ticket and be able to sit in a seat. Children under 5 years of age are not permitted unless

otherwise advertised. Parents will be asked to remove their child/children if they are causing
