FROM THE INTERNATIONAL PEACE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE
We are often asked, why do we hold the International Peace
Festival? It’s a lot of work and coordination, right? Yes, it is.
Is it worth it? We believe it is. As a community, we are so
blessed, and this is an opportunity to both pay it forward and to
give back. Each year, the festival reminds us that there are
tremendous unmet needs. There are issues of poverty, war, violence
and conflict, homelessness, food insecurity, cultural clashes,
etc., here in Ithaca and around the world.
We believe we have an obligation to make the world a better
place every day, with small personal actions and in community-wide
advocacy efforts and work. Lofty goals? Maybe. Can we do it alone?
Absolutely not. That is why as a community it is important to
support the work that is done all year long on peace and
justice–related issues and to take time to reflect on ongoing
needs, create greater awareness, and celebrate when we make a
difference. The festival encourages individuals to reach out and
connect to each other in meaningful ways and to learn about how
together we can address the many challenging issues facing us
today. As resources continue to shrink, we hope that the financial
contributions help support peace-related efforts.
We hope the festival is three days that inspire you to take
positive actions to promote peace, to build relationships within
the local community, and to p r o v i d e f i n a n c i a l s u p p
o r t t o organizations with local connections that are supporting
peace-related activities locally and around the world.
Is one weekend enough? No. As a community, as organizations, as
committees, as families, and as individuals, we need to challenge
ourselves to do more and to both find our voice to help create
awareness of the many needs and to commit to do more. Join us next
Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday. We’ll talk, learn, play, laugh,
sing, eat, dance, and pray. But most important, we hope you will
connect with others and be inspired to pay it forward and to give
back. Together, we can make a difference!

FALL SCRIPTURE STUDY: PANORAMA OF THE OLD TESTAMENT The Old
Testament includes history, stories, poems, prophetic writings, and
collections of wisdom writings, written over a period of almost a
thousand years. It is God’s revelation of himself to the people of
Israel and the story of how they came to trust in God in the midst
of tough times and in spite of their own failings. Get an overview
of the books of the Hebrew Scriptures in a six-session course this
fall, including a bird’s-eye view of the history of ancient Israel.
We will meet Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center,
beginning September 12.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES DINNER Mark your calendars for Friday,
September 30, and join us for a fundraising dinner for Catholic
Charities of Tompkins County. Fr. Joe will be preparing the sauce
and serving up a great (and simple) dinner while you get the chance
to hear about the good work Catholic Charities does in our area.
More information about the dinner will be coming soon. If you would
like to help with the dinner, please contact Ann Marie at 257-2493
or [email protected].
NEW TO TOWN OR THE PARISH? A warm welcome to all who are new to
our parish community! There are Parish Registration booklets at all
the doors of the Church, and a Hospitality Minister can help you
find them. We will also be hosting a luncheon just for you on
Sunday, September 25, at 1 p.m. Your RSVP to June Haynor, our
parish secretary, is greatly appreciated at 257-2493 or
[email protected]. If there is anything we can do to make you feel
more at home, please contact the parish office or Ann Marie or Fr.
Joe after Mass.
THINKING ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC? The Rite of Christian
Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process by which
individuals who are thinking about joining the Catholic Church
learn about the Catholic faith and discern where God is calling
them. Our program is beginning on September 21. If you are
interested in joining this process, please contact Ann Marie at
257-2493 or [email protected] to set up an appointment. R.C.I.A. can
prepare you for Baptism, First Communion, and/or Confirmation.
UNITED WAY DAY OF CARING St. Catherine’s is joining with United
Way of Tompkins County in support of the annual Stephen E. Garner
Day of Caring on September 15 to collect food and personal care
items for distribution to food pantries around the county. For the
first two weekends in September (September 3–4 and 10–11), you are
invited to donate nonperishable food items; personal care,
household, and pet items; and school supplies, and bring them to
the Church. There will be white collection boxes located at each
entrance to the Church. Watch for updates with a list of specific
food and personal care items desired.
You can also bring your donation to the International Peace
Festival on Saturday, September 17. Look for the booth hosted by
St. Catherine’s and United Way. For more information, please
contact Jeannie Barnaba at [email protected] or 257-0064.

From the Book of Ann Marie
Dear Parish Family,
Fr. Joe sent me an interesting article from the New York Times
called “What Religion Would Jesus Belong To?” In it, the author
Nicholas Kristof quotes from Brian D. McLaren’s book The Great
Spiritual Migration in asking this question: “What would it mean
for Christians to rediscover their faith not as a problematic
system of beliefs but as a just and generous way of
life, rooted in contemplation and expressed in compassion?” The
article expresses the belief that we are more inspired by the
religious person running the soup kitchen than we are by doctrine,
beautiful churches, or ritual, and I think there is some truth to
that. I happen to believe that doctrine and ritual, and sometimes
churches, also reveal God to us, but in my own life, my experiences
with holy, just, and generous people have most formed my
understanding of God and religion.
I was thinking about this today because if you are on our
parish’s email list, you have surely gotten invitations to
volunteer in different ways, and I am not sure if you experience
them as an invitation to live out your faith as a “loving way of
life” (to continue to quote from McLaren) or as a desperate plea
for help. I hope it is the former!
The article notes that “religious Americans donate far more to
charity and volunteer more than secular Americans do,” and if you
believe that to be a good thing, then it is one more good reason to
belong to a religion. But as Fr. Joe talked about in his homily a
few weeks ago, we should be volunteering not because of the
“brownie points we earn for heaven,” but because our relationship
with God, the example of Jesus, and the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit propel us to see the world differently and therefore we
almost can’t help ourselves from wanting to make life easier for
others. We do that because we have experienced God’s love for us
and we see in the other a “child of God,” equally and differently
loved. Someone once described it this way to me—our cup is
overflowing with the love of God, and we can’t help but ending up
splashing others with it as well.
So, in the weeks ahead, you can volunteer at our International
Peace Festival next weekend, and help us create a space for peace
in our community and help our own parish and many other
organizations do good in this world. You can volunteer to pack food
for those most hungry in the world through the Ithaca MobilePack
for Feed My Starving Children (September 22–24). We will soon be
asking for help with baking, setup, and serving for the Catholic
Charities fundraising dinner on September 30. Or perhaps you might
be able to help serve lunch to members of our community who are
providing care to family members (October 5). And if you can’t
donate time but have some money you could give, the Ithaca
MobilePack, Catholic Charities, the Portal de Belén, and the
Louisiana flood victims are all in need of your generosity.
My own reflection on all of this is pretty simple. Jesus came to
reveal his loving Father to us—to help us know how to love God,
ourselves, and our neighbor. I think that when we do these three
things, we are living most faithfully, and when we do only a little
of any of this, or only one or two parts of this directive, we fall
short in our discipleship. So, to be a disciple, I need to know and
love God, and I do that through private and communal prayer and
through learning about God and my religion. Second, I need to love
myself, which means discovering and using the gifts that God has
given me and taking care of myself. Third, I need to love my
neighbors, and I can do that in a million ways—but it has to extend
beyond the people I like and those who can give something back to
me, because usually that is just friendship being lived out. This
commandment to love others is why St. Catherine’s works really hard
to provide opportunities for you to participate in living the
Gospel. It is why our youth went on mission trips this summer and
will be going to the Dominican Republic in February. It is why the
Children’s Faith Formation and Youth Ministry programs are going to
be doing a lot of service this year. It is why we are really
involved in the Ithaca MobilePack, and have a 16-year relationship
with the Portal de Belén. We can’t be a Catholic church that Jesus
would recognize if we aren’t trying to follow his example, and
above all else, Jesus served others.
Peace,
A vibrant Catholic Community where all are welcomed, challenged,
and supported in their life’s journey.

PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE WITHOUT EXCEPTION 40 Days for Life
Ithaca is hosting Carol Crossed, a well-known peace activist,
founder of Democrats for Life of New York and cofounder of
Feminists for Non-Violent Choices, on Tuesday, September 20, from
7:30–9 p.m. at St. Catherine’s. The Year of Mercy affords a perfect
opportunity to address mercy within a context of justice, and so
Carol Crossed will be using examples from oppressed groups,
particularly the unborn, to help us learn how charity and justice
are different, and the role that witnessing and legislative
advocacy can play in our Christian response to justice issues. All
are welcome.
MOVIE NIGHT – SAVE THE DATE We were planning on having our next
Movie Night on Monday, September 26, but since this is also the
night of the first presidential debate, we thought it best to
postpone. Our next Move Night will be Monday, October 17, to see He
Named Me Malala.
Youth Faith Formation
WELCOME BACK! We are very excited to welcome all of our children
and youth to the 2016–17 year of Faith Formation! We have 106
children (CLOW through sixth grade) and 50 youth (middle school and
high school) registered this year. We would also like to begin the
year by thanking all of our leaders, catechists, and youth
assistants who will be serving our children and youth this year and
all the parents who will be helping assist in their child(ren)’s
sessions. Thank you for volunteering your time to lead our children
and youth in the discovery of their faith! If you have not yet had
a chance to register your child(ren) and/or youth, it is not too
late! Registration forms are available at the Parish Center. You
can also contact Ashley Blank at [email protected] or 257-2493 with
any questions.
NO YFF SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 None of our faith formation classes
will be meeting on Sunday, September 18, due to the International
Peace Festival. We encourage all families to attend the festival!
All sessions (CLOW, CFF, MSYM, and HSYM) will resume on Sunday,
September 25.
“IN THE LOOP” WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY We are
thrilled to be welcoming our ninth graders to High School Youth
Ministry! On September 11, the high schoolers will be gathering for
a session titled, “Opening Night: What to Expect in Youth
Ministry.” The high schoolers will be given the opportunity to
build community with new and returning members, see what the year
will unfold, and enjoy each other’s company. We are asking that
each of the youth bring a snack or appetizer for 5–10 people. The
following Sunday, September 18, High School Youth Ministry will not
gather due to the International Peace Festival. We will resume on
September 25.
MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY Our Middle School Youth Ministry
program now includes Confirmation preparation with specific topics
of catechesis throughout the year. For our first session this
weekend, the middle schoolers are going to get to know each other
as they learn about youth ministry and the activities they will
participate in during the coming year. We are asking that each of
the youth bring a snack or appetizer for 5–10 people. The following
Sunday, September 18, Middle School Youth Ministry will not gather
due to the International Peace Festival. We will resume on
September 25.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Preparation for the Sacrament of
Confirmation has begun in middle school! This sacrament is
recommended for anyone who is seventh grade and older and is a
two-and-a-half-year process. To register your child, please contact
Ashley Blank at 257-2493 or [email protected] with any questions or to
register. Registration forms can be found in the Parish Office.
