Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings First Reading: Abraham bargains with God to spare the city (Genesis 18). Psalm: Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me (Psalm 138). Second Reading: You were buried with Christ in baptism, in which you were also raised with Christ (Colossians 2). Gospel: Everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds (Luke 11). Readings for the Week Monday: Ex 32:15-24, 30-34; Ps 106:19-23; Jn 11:19-27 Tuesday: Ex 33:7-11; 34:5b-9, 28; Ps 103:6-11; Mt 13:36-43 Wednesday: Ex 34:29-35; Ps 99:5-7, 9; Mt 13:44-46 Thursday: Ex 40:16-21, 34-38; Ps 84:3-6a, 8, 11; Mt 13:47-53 Friday: Lv 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37; Ps 81:3-6, 10-11ab; Mt 13:54-58 Saturday: Lv 25:1, 8-17; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 7-8; Mt 14:1-12 Sunday: Eccl 1:2; 2:21-23; Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17; Col 3:1-5, 9-11; Lk 12:13-21 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Martha Tuesday: St. Peter Chrysologus Wednesday: St. Ignatius of Loyola Thursday: St. Alphonsus Liguori Friday: St. Eusebius of Vercelli; St. Peter Julian Eymard; First Friday Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday Scripture Reflection The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Parish News

New Parishioners: Welcome! Please extend a warm welcome to St. Catherine of Siena’s newest parishioners. We look forward to their involvement in parish life!

• Michael and Meghan Alfortish • John, Ashley, and John, III, Manolakis Baptisms: Congratulations! Congratulations to the following children who were baptized recently at St. Catherine.

• Stella Bree Ammari, child of Zeid and Sarah Ammari • Fiona Kaida Tibbetts, child of Bryan and Claire Tibbetts Black and Indian Mission Collection: Thank You! Thank you to everyone who participated in the 135th annual Black and Indian Mission Collection last weekend. Your prayerful support enables people to come to know Jesus Christ in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native communities all over the United States. Spreading the Gospel couldn’t happen without your support! SVdP Food Collection: August 3-4 Please bring nonperishable food items to church next weekend, August 3-4, and place them in the collection bins in the narthex of the church. Though donations of all types of nonperishable foods are greatly appreciated and are distributed each week to those in need, high protein foods such as peanut butter and canned meat can be particularly helpful to those experiencing economic distress.

Fellowship Sunday: August 4 Next Sunday, August 4, will be Fellowship Sunday. All are invited to gather in the Melancon Center after the 9 am Mass to visit with new and long-time parishioners, and to enjoy coffee and doughnuts. Sunday Morning Childcare to Resume: August 4 The babysitting service for six-month-olds to five-year-olds will resume on Sunday, August 4, during the 11 am Mass, in the Melancon Center. This summer, we assessed the babysitting service, which previously was offered at both 9 am and 11 am Masses. After speaking with many of the families who most often utilize the babysitting service, we have concluded that it would be most beneficial to offer babysitting only at the 11am Mass. For more information, please contact Jazmin Gutierrez, our Childcare and Nursery Coordinator, at [email protected].

2019—2020 Confirmation Registration Registration forms for the 2019-2020 Confirmation class can be found in the narthex of the church and on the parish website. The St. Catherine of Siena Confirmation program is for parishioners who are juniors or seniors in high school. If you have any questions, contact Paula Atchley, Director of Religious Education, at [email protected]. Tithing Funds Distribution Input: August 8 St. Catherine sets aside 7% of each weekend collection to help the poor and needy. When the parish finance council meets quarterly, they distribute the funds from the tithing account. If you have any suggestions for charitable organizations that SCS could possibly support, you can send a request to [email protected] for consideration. We support nonprofit organizations that serve the poor, needy, homeless, etc. All requests must be made before August 8. CYO Night and Eighth Grade Welcome: August 11 We want to welcome all upcoming eighth graders to CYO! All high school students (8-12th grade) are invited to the Youth Room for the monthly youth night and dinner from 6:30-8 pm. Junior High (6-7th grade) and High School students (8-12th grade) are invited to our Monthly Youth Mass, held on Sunday, August 11, at 5:30 pm in the Church. Ten-Session Psalms Study to Begin: August 13 A 10-session study of Psalms will begin on Tuesday, August 13. Program creators Jeff Cavins, Sara Christmyer, and Tim Gray reveal how the poetic beauty of Psalms is Israel’s response to their covenant and a model for our own life and our covenant with God. Sessions will take place in the Melancon Center from 10 am-noon. For more information or to register, contact Carol Rooney, [email protected] or 460-0318. Journey through Church History: September 5 A 20-part study of Church history will take place on Thursday evenings, from September 5-February 13, 6:45-8:30 pm, in the Melancon Center. Presented by Steve Weidenkopf, the “Epic: A Journey through Church History” DVD series takes participants through the major people, places, and events that make up the history of the Catholic Church. The series shows the glory of the Church founded by Christ and helps participants understand how they fit into this Epic story. The cost for the study is $35. Class will not meet on October 31, November 28, December 26, or January 2. To register or for more information, contact Mary Jeandron, 858-4464 or [email protected]. Parish School of Religion Classes: September 8 Parish School of Religion (PSR) classes begin on Sunday, September 8. PSR registration forms can be found on the parish website and in the narthex of the church. Two-Minute Testimonies: Alpha

Alpha Testimony: Colin and Jess Brunet We were not expecting to do Alpha and we surely have never heard of it before but one of our friends, Graham Thomas, was a table host for the course and asked us if we would like to participate and we said why not! We had no expectations and were just super excited about getting to have a date night once a week for a few months (we have a little one at home and the grand-parents helped us make this happen)! It was such an amazing experience to get to have a date night with Jesus and each other and also get to know great people who were wanting to learn more about how to have a true relationship with God or just

to even know God at all. We learned so much about ourselves, each other, and the people in our group. We also became super close with our group and found awesome fellowship that we would’ve never known had we not done Alpha. Also, the weekend retreat was so peaceful and prayerful and we truly got so much out of the entire course! We have been recommending it to people ever since it ended. If you are looking to grow in your relationship with God, or even just have a lot of questions about who He is, we highly recommend taking this course, you will not regret it!! Prayerfully, Colin and Jess Brunet

If you would like to share your testimony please contact Joni in the parish office.

Alpha Testimony: Jeff Hunter On December 3, 2018, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. My ejection fraction was less than 10% (meaning that my heart was not squeezing and pumping properly). I would like to share my story on how Alpha and reconnecting with God have helped me physically, emotionally, and spiritually during my recovery. Prior to my diagnosis, I lived an average life. My wife, Jolie, and I were raising our beautiful little girl, Harper, who was 1 at the time. During the week, my wife and I would work during the day and come home to cook and spend time with Harper in the evenings. Our weekends would consist of going to parties, hanging out with family and friends, and woodworking when possi-ble. Prayer, God, and church were not a

part of my life at all. I was raised Catholic and attended St. Rita in Harahan for grammar school and Archbishop Rummel for high school—where I served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. During college, however, I lost all connection to God. I wouldn’t reconnect with God until my friend, Cliff, told me about Alpha and asked me to join him for a course at St. Catherine. His invitation came at the perfect time...two weeks after I was diagnosed with heart failure. After receiving the news of heart failure, I was not able to work, cook the same or drink alcohol. I was put on a crazy low sodium diet with fluid restrictions. I had to take several medications and wear a life vest to monitor my heart. I was told it was more than likely I would need a heart transplant due to the condition of my heart. Less than two months after diagnosis my life vest started going off, having detected that my heart was going into ventricular fibrillation. I was back in the hospital having an ICD surgically implanted in me. I started Alpha with an open heart and an open mind. Immediately I could feel a difference with my health and state of mind. I felt comfort with my condition. The little bit of depression I had left me. I started praying every night before bed. I asked Jesus to help me with the temptation to use alcohol. That prayer was answered overnight. I’m not sure how the temptation left my body, but it did. Halfway through the course we had a retreat. It wasn’t until then that I realized I wasn’t praying for my heart or my health. All of my prayers were directed at other people with struggles in life. I started reading a book given to me by an Alpha team member, “The Power of a Praying Husband.” My relationship with my wife grew stronger every day. (This is a great book

to teach you how to pray for your wife. It really helps you identify what your wife is sensitive to.) My priorities in life started changing. I now understand that you need to have faith in God to create your path in life. I know in my heart that God is truly healing my heart. I value the small things now. I cherish every minute spent with family and friends. I received great results in May that my heart function has jumped from 10% to 25%. I was cleared to start working in June. I’m now a proud parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena. I continue to pray every night and I don’t plan on stopping. I’m taking the next steps to go to church every Sunday to continue my relationship with God. I understand that medication helps my heart function. There is only one explanation for staying positive, strengthening my marriage, understanding my new path in life, temptations losing their appeal, and cherishing the small things: that’s God and prayer. I have a long road of recovery before me. I know in my heart, that with God by my side, I can beat this and live a long, healthy life. As of now, my heart function has jumped up to 47%. I’m back at work full time with my next doctor's appointment six months away. I still pray every single night of my life. My two girls are healthy and doing great! These are truly the happiest days of my life. The last thing I would like to share is how I finish my prayers: "God...I will walk by your side, help spread your word, and lead by example." I hope my testimony will help others find comfort and happiness during difficult times.

Alpha 4 starts on Tuesday, August 27. Please contact Joni, [email protected] or 835-9343, if you would like to participate.

Traditional Herb Blessing Ceremony: August 15 The traditional herb blessing ceremony will take place after the 5 pm Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Thursday, August 15, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, 2734 Nashville Avenue. Archbishop Gregory Aymond will preside at the Mass. In many European countries the Feast of the Assumption is the traditional day for the blessings of herb gardens and the ripe harvest. Located in the long days of summer, this feast points to the harvest and to the end of time. The Feast of the Assumption is inextricably linked to Mary as bearer of God’s Son, and the fruits of creation. Traditionally in Europe and in some area churches, wreaths of fresh and dried herbs and scented plants are placed near the reading stand in the worship space. Fragrance in the Scripture calls to mind the witness of the Holy Spirit. We recall that the anointing of the Lord as of earthly kings was done with fragrant myrrh, “Your robe is all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia” (Ps. 45). For more information, email shrineolps, visit shrineofourladyofpromptsuccor.com, or call 866-0200.

Domestic Church Movement is Active Locally

Domestic Church is the family branch of the Light-Life Movement, founded in Poland by Servant of God, Fr. Franciszeck Blachnicki, with the guidance, support, and influence of his bishop, Karol Wojtyla, St. John Paul the Great. In 1973, Fr. Blachnicki combined the formation of his Light-Life Movement, originally for the youth of Poland with the structure of Teams of Our Lady, a movement for married couples founded in France. He used the Church document on the Catechesis of Adults to provide the timeline and the elements necessary for

married couples to truly come to grow in their knowledge and experience of Christ and His Church. Domestic Church is active in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. For more information, contact the Family Life Apostolate at 861-6247, [email protected], or Fla.arch-no.org.
