Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The readings of this weekend speak of forgiveness and of mercy

for ourselves and for others, and show us they are related to each

other. They bring to evidence our need of God’s forgiveness, and

our dependence on God for everything, especially for salvation.

Peter gets surprised by trying to be generous in offering to

forgive seven times a day, with Jesus telling him that seventy seven

times is the limit for daily forgiveness. Implying that we should forgive always, Jesus is asking us

to forgive from the heart, and shows us how generous is God in forgiving us. To forgive others

when they ask for forgiveness is not so difficult, but forgiving someone who doesn’t ask for it is

more difficult.

Fact that we are asked to forgive always, does not mean that we should not defend ourselves

against someone’s aggression. We should protect ourselves always, and we should defend

ourselves always. Aggression is a direct violation of our right to life and liberty. This is why as we

remember 9/11, and we honor the victims and seek the justice for something that never should

have happened.

Violence and war is always wrong. Nobody is a winner in those two. It is an offense to God

who made us capable of dialogue, and we should resolve our differences by dialogue. War is the

last resort for defending oneself from the aggression. We have a right to defend our life and

liberty, our health and property. Any form of aggression is wrong.

Last Sunday the Scripture spoke about the need for fraternal correction, that should be done

out of love, with regard towards the truth that is evident to us. But even in correcting others we

have to be respectful of the other person, so that we don’t hurt them in the name of our right to

be correct. It is very difficult to express our differences with others, and it is even more difficult to

forgive being hurt in some way. But attitude of mercy and forgiveness is necessary for ourselves

to be healed, and not to be filled with hatred and resentment that would ultimately hurt us more.

We are asked to be healed and to heal by leaving ultimate judgments to God, and to expect justice

and salvation from God himself.

We need to strive for justice and proper education, so that we could live respectfully with

others. We condemn violence in any form and we pray for victims of gang violence that we

experienced over the years. Seeking justice for the victims we pray for healing of broken hearts

and lives. This process takes time and is not automatic. Forgiveness is a process of healing, and it

takes time and dedication to it in order to achieve it. Let us not be surprised that it hurts, as the

hurts that we received don’t go away instantly.

Seeking justice is part of our rights and education and prevention from the wrongs to be

perpetuating. The dialogue and reasoning has to be done about it.

Ultimate healing and rest we will find only in the Lord, and our salvation comes from Him. As St.

Paul said we are the Lord’s in life and in death. This is why it is so consoling to know, that the

Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion as the Psalm tells us.

Have a blessed 9/11. I know it’s after when you read it, but it is my prayer for you before it

passes this year, and we keep promise to remember it always.

God bless everyone always!!! F. Stan

P. Stan

Fr. John Victor

From the desk of Fr. John Victor
