Test Taking TipsHow to become a better testerLexi Oliver, Staff Writer

Tests. Tests. Tests. Some-

times it seems that all I’m doing

is studying for tests! It’s stressful.

If you have ever thought to your-

self, “Teachers only give students

tests to hurt our grades,” then

you’re wrong. Teachers, believe

it or not, aren’t out to get us. Do

you really believe that teachers

enjoy grading the countless test

papers? No. They give us tests be-

GeneralTips

ACT and SAT Tips

- Study, study, study! This may seem obvious but actually

studying until you know the material at hand.

- Get a good night’s rest! You don’t want to be falling asleep or

zoning out during the test!

- Eat before the test! Instead of sugary foods, try more natural

ȱȱȱȱȱȱǰȱȱ¡ǰȱȱǯȱěȱȂȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱ ȱȱ¢ȱĴ¢ȱȱȱ¢ȱȱȃǯȄȱȱȱȱ¢ȱ ȱȱȱȱǻȱȱęȱ ȱǯǼ

- Read every word of the directions and questions! Fully

understanding the given directions/questions is key to scoring

the score you want. Mark words like “except, always, never,”

because these words often eliminate answer choices.

Ȭȱȱȱȱęȱȱ¢ȱȱ¢ȱ¢ȱȱȱ¢ȱ¢ȱǷ Negative thoughts equal negative actions. Think positively!

- Pace yourself. If you go too fast, you might make silly mistakes;

ȱȱȱȱ ǰȱȱ¢ȱȱȱ ǰȱ¢ȱȱȱęǷ

- Be sure to read ALL answer choices before choosing an

answer.

- When you come to a question that you’re not sure of the answer,

eliminate the answer choices that you know are “for sure” not

correct. Most tests have an answer choice that’s clearly not the

correct answer!

- When an unexpected question comes up or you have a pencil

malfunction, don’t panic. If your pencil breaks or your eraser

runs out, just chill. Take a deep breath and ask the instructor for

assistance.

- If time remains, check your work! You can never look over your

test too much.

- MATH:

ȱȱȱȬȱ ȱȱȱȱęDzȱȱȱȱȱ¢ȱȱ but with more time; mark out the ones you can’t answer.

- Don’t go so fast that you make careless errors! Allot time to

recheck your work before time is called.

- READING:

- Practice your reading by reading during your free time!

ȱȱȬȱȱȱȱȱęǷȱȱȂȱȱ ȱȱ be found in directed paragraphs or lines, whereas other

passage’s questions ask about the passage as a whole.

- Annotate the passages as you read them. Mark key words and

phrases, that way you can look at the notes you made to

answer the questions!

- Learn as much as you can about the ACT instead of going in

and taking the test blindly. Knowing what to expect the test to

be like will help you know what and how to study.

- Refresh your knowledge and skills in the content areas you

studied or have not looked at in a while.

- Set aside small amounts of time for studying over an extended

period so you won’t have to “cram” at the end.

- Learn to pace yourself! Be sure to focus the entire time you are

taking the test; don’t waste time zoning out or staring at the

wall. Be sure to bring a watch because not all rooms have clocks.

- Mark your answer document correctly and use a #2 pencil! If

your document isn’t marked right, then the scores can’t give you

the correct score!

cause we are going to be tested

in life, and they want us to be

prepared. Even more shocking

is how much more disappointed

teachers are in us when we don’t

do well on tests more than we

are in ourselves! Some students

don’t do well on tests because

they are too lazy to study, but

others have testing anxiety.

Do you panic when you

cold sweats by the time the test

paper reaches your desk? Well,

you’re not alone. If you’re like

me, you can know exactly how

to work any Pre-Cal problem but

as soon as Mrs. Howse places the

paper on your desk, you draw

blank. Testing anxiety is com-

mon among students, and many

organizations such as the College
