Spring has sprung on the Cullman High School cam-pus, and the students, faculty, and sta! is ecstatic. With what seems like only a few weeks le" of school, things have been kicked into high gear here on campus. #e sports teams are pushing themselves to their limits on the practice $eld to get ready for games. If you are one of the $rst ten people to actu-ally read these Ed Notes and bring this paper to Ms. Calahan’s room, we will give you a free Blowpop! Classes are rigorously preparing for $nal exams, and summer is the thing on every-one’s minds. In this edition of The Hilight, my co-editor, Sam Barnes, and I have worked with our sta! to provide you with an enter-taining issue to alleviate some of the stress of a typical school day. Lexi, Jack, and Landon have provided you with updates on the many spring sports. Morgan goes into detail about our fellow student, Andrew Winfrey, and the remarkable progress he is making. with most of the people since kindergarten. Here you are as seniors, and you still don’t know everyone’s names.’” A few days
later Coach Sparks gave government students a chal-lenge. He picked one student to be what he calls the “class greeter”. The
job of the class greeter is to do just that. They are responsi-ble for greet-ing every stu-dent in their class period by
name and with a smile. Some
have even gone over what was ex-
pected and handed each classmate a cup-cake or some candy. The students in each class rank the excel-
lence or the failure of the greeter. That greeter then picks someone to take their place the following day. What seemed like a simple
assignment has caused quite a stir in the government class accord-ing to Sparks. “It has caused my classes to more easily participate in class discussions, and now at least everyone knows each oth-er’s names.” Senior, Kayla From-hold, said that she loves having a class greeter. “Our class is like a tight group now; we have all learned so much about each other.” According to From-hold, class discussions are much more productive and no one hesitates to participate. “It isn’t a big deal to any of us to raise our hand and speak our opinion because it’s like we’re just a huge group of friends.” A simple idea has completely trans-formed the classroom of Coach Sparks, and quite possibly the en-tire senior class. From nearly 100% in class, to just knowing each oth-er’s names; the class greeter con-cept has been a tremendous suc-cess. The next class you walk into,

My grandma has always told me that you never know what a person has gone through in the twenty-four hours be-fore you meet and that you nev-er know what goes on behind closed doors. I think we should apply this by trying our absolute hardest to ne nice to everyone you come into contact with. You never know how much a few kind words and simple smile can mean to someone. Our resident g o ve r n m e n t teacher, Coach Sparks, decided to try something new this year. “I got up at the front of my room ȱ ȱ ęȱ ¢ȱ ȱschool and asked my students a simple question,” he said. “I asked if anyone knew the names of every student in the room.” To Coach Sparks’ surprise, no one knew all the names. “I thought ‘This is ri-diculous. “So happy to have people that understand me… btw, to know the truth and do nothing with it is the most dangerous situation any person can be in! Don’t be the man who buries his talent, use what you have for Jesus Christ!” Andrew posted this status on facebook just six days before his accident. At that point their was no way that he could see the number of people that would surround him and his family with such love and care in the days to come. A status or statement like the one above is not uncommon for Andrew; although he is a natural two-sport athlete, Andrew’s true love in life was serving his heavenly. I have talked to many different people about Andrew and most were speechless, but one comment was reoccurring, most could not stop talking about Andrew’s personality and smile.
Andrew is a caring guy who loves God and loves God’s people and it is evident in the way he lives. Lance Cleveland, Andrew’s best friend, said “I don’t think I know someone
who doesn’t like Andy, people are just drawn to him.” This is so true. Andrew is just that type
of guy. I do not know anyone who took advantage of every opportunity in life and sports to share God’s truth like Andrew does. It is almost impossible to think of someone who is strong enough to persevere through such a trial like Andrew has, his current
doctors have even called his improvement “amazing” and “impressive”. It is truly incredible to see God work through such a trying time. Coach Lee said it best “God gives the toughest of trials to
his strongest warriors.” $QGUHZ LV GH¿QLWHO\ RQH RIa kind. You never see him without a smile on his face, he couldn’t help
but brighten your day. One group of students is extrememly anxious to have Andrew back with them. The Cullman High School baseabll program is a huge pat of Andrew’s life. Andrew trveled and played varsity his freshman year and even started the season with the bearcats this winter. He has GH¿QLWHO\ PDGHan lasting impact on his coaches and fellow players. Coach Patterson shared with is a little bit on how he feels about Andrew “ I love him like he’s my own, I miss him so bad it hurts, and I can’t wait for him to be back in our dugout with a smile on his face and Christ Jesus shining through him for everyone to see.” The CHS baseball team has made several efforts to keep Andrew on their mind. Not even a week after Andrew’s accident, each team, Varsity, Junior

Varsity, and Ninth grade, had “11”, Andrew’s number, monogrammed on their caps in honor of their close friend and teammate. Many of the players even write “PFA” (Pray for Andrew) or “AW 11” on their wrist tape as a constant reminder of their
close friend. It is hard to understand how or why s o m e t h i n g like this has happened, but God has done amazing work through Andrew before and during
this time and I have no doubt that he has much planned for Andrew in the future. His family remains faithful and has zero doubt that Andrew will fully recover. Please continue to keep Andrew and his family in your
thoughts and prayers.

The varsity teams of the Cullman High School tennis squad are no strangers to victories, over-whelming ones at that. The varsi-ty girls have been named not only the 2012 Rusellville Tournament champions, but also the 2012 Ben-jamin Russell Tournament cham-pions. On that same note, the var-sity boys have claimed the title of 2012 Russellville Tournament champions. Cullman High se-nior Allison Howell provided an insight into the play of the team, and also answered some ques-tions about herself personally.

The Cullman High School Girls golf team has expanded greatly in the 2011-2012 school year. For those who do not particularly know how golf tournaments are scored and ranked, they always take the scores of the top four performing players and proceed to add them together. Whoever has the lowest total team score is then declared the winner. For more information, I interviewed Victoria Hagedorn. Cullman softball has ȱ ěȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱimpressive record of 7-12; however, these varsity girls have had arguably one of the toughest schedules in the state. Of their 19 games , hte girls have played mostly 6A teams. Of the 5A teams they have played, the Lady Cats have beaten most of them. Coached by Brandon Lee, the girls are well on their way to an area and regional championship. “We have lots of leadership on our team. These girls could very well make it to the Regional championship in Montgomery if we play like we are capable of,” said Coach Lee.
