Stop by the Welcome Desk af- ter the service and let us know you’re new. We’d love to meet you! WHAT TO EXPECT Announcements - We like to keep you informed about what is happening at SVBC. So every Sunday, we will hilight the events that we think are important to you. You can also subscribe to our weekly newsletter for more details about upcoming events not covered in this edition of THE JOURNAL. Singing - The people at SVBC love to sing, and this is one of the ways that we can worship Jesus. You’ll hear anything from old- time gospel to contemporary worship. We don’t stick to any one type of music. Giving - If you’re visiting us today, please don’t feel obligated to give. Christians are called to give out of joy to their church. We call this a “tithe” or a tenth of what God has given us. Prayer - One of the ways we can worship is to praise God for what he’s given us, thank him for his blessings, and ask his direction on our lives. We also pray for others in the world and take prayer requests. (Feel free to fill out the card in the chair in front of you or pick one up at the Welcome Desk) Message - Each week we hear from a speaker who has taken the time to study what God says in the Bible so that he can help us un- derstand Jesus better and what we need to do as Christians in our world. Every message is available after Sunday for downloading from our website (svbchr.org) and in the iTunes Store podcasts. There are also message notepads at the Welcome Desk for you to use if you like. After - Feel free to stay after the service to get to know us better. Stop by the welcome desk or visit us online at svbchr.org. RESTROOMS are located in the lobby of Horizon Christian School Welcome to Shepherd of the Valley Bible Church! If you are visiting us today, we are so glad you chose to worship with us this morning. We are just a group of imperfect people who have discovered that their greatest purpose and joy in life is following Jesus. Our services on Sunday morning are casual, but our commitment to God is not; we do our best to live and proclaim God’s grace in our wor- ship and our relationships. We gather every Sunday morning at 10:30 to collectively honor God and to celebrate our friendship with Him and with each other. We also talk about the Bible and try to apply to our lives the message it has for us. Our mission here at Shepherd is to help people become followers or apprentices of Jesus Christ - people who are in the process of being conformed into the image of Christ for the sake of others. In order to carry out this mission we are committed to doing four things: worship (which focuses on God and what He has done for us), fellowship (which focuses on our relationship with God and with each other), personal spiritual formation (here the focus is on our hearts and personal spiritual growth), and service (focusing on meeting the physical, emo- tional, and spiritual needs of others). Our current series, “I’m In”, seeks to explore these four commitments and what it means to say, “I want to fol- low Jesus”. We will also be talking about some specific ways to flesh out the message and life of Christ both within and beyond the local church. May God richly bless you this morning. We’re glad you’re here! I hate to see the fireweed flyThe ovate leaves on a single stem

Are mottled now and dry.

They don’t know that soonSnow will dust the hills

Like sugar on a cake

And even these stemsWill lie frozen

On the groundJob done.

Having reproduced itself.

I know the cotton flying hereAround my head

Bears the seeds of next year’sFuchsia splendor

But stillI loved this year’s

Purple fireAnd so

I hate to see the fireweed fly.

One of the greatest ways God reveals himself to us is through the people he brings into our lives. These spiritually affirm-

ing relationships often spring from surprising sources at unexpect-ed times. God knows of the struggles we face in this broken world. His love for us shines through the encouragement and wisdom we receive from those who invest in our journey ... our mentors.

In The Quiet Leading, Scott Winters shares his powerful testi-mony of two such mentors. The first introduces Scott to a deeper walk with the Lord. But when this mentor is attacked and killed by a bear, Scott is left to pick up the pieces. On cue, God delivers a new spiritual advisor, who helps strengthen Scott’s faith by showing that God has a plan for his life, to give him hope and a future.

God loves to bring triumph out of tragedy, to give us “beauty for ashes” as the prophet Isaiah puts it. The Quiet Leading is a story of encouragement, hope, and healing through powerful relationships. Scott Winters’ story shows us that God answers prayers, soothes deep hurts, and works continually to bring us into the likeness of His son, Jesus Christ, through the events and relationships of our lives.

The Quiet Leading will be available October 1. See Scott Winters for details.
